Hi Gang!
Some days it just doesn’t pay to get outta bed!
My STAR WARS toy collection is located on most of the second floor of my home.
I came home one night about 3 months ago and found that my kitchen (located on the 1st floor) had become a virtual swimming pool due to a ruptured waterpipe up on the third floor.
The water leaked through the second floor ceiling (flooding my STAR WARS Collection room), and through the first floor ceiling to flood the kitchen. There was SEVERE damage along the way.
For me the MOST heartbreaking damage was to my STAR WARS toy collection on the second floor!!
Boxed VINTAGE Kenner collectibles as well as MODERN Hasbro pieces were completely WATER-LOGGED!!!
The toys themselves were (for the most part) un-damaged. But the packaging for these collectibles were reduced to useless soggy lumps of cardboard!!!
My friends, I don’t mind telling you, I damn-near broke into tears.
Nearly 30 years of collecting just... soggy.
Now, I've posted this thread HERE in the customizing section because in the tradition of true customizing, I've decided to take this bittter LEMON of a situation and turn into LEMONADE.
I have begun to design NEW CUSTOM PACKAGING for all of the (newly) loose toys.
I have created my own CUSTOM GRAPHICS for these boxes using photos of my custom action figures, and photos of the actual loose toys composited in ADOBE PHOTOSHOP.
I also decided to base the STYLE of my packaging on Kenner’s VINTAGE boxes.
You see, I really don’t care for the flimsy modern “window” boxes that present the toy in a “posed” state.
Call me “old School”, but I prefer the packaged toy to be contained in a windowless box protected from damaging sunlight. And the box should have exciting, colorful graphics.
Now, before anyone asks, I am NOT offering these custom boxes for sale. I have only created them for my own personal collection.
In some cases, the photography work for these boxes is my own. But in many cases, I have downloaded photos from throughout the web and from the Rebelscum toy archives to create these.
Therefore, it would simply be un-ethical for me to profit from the work of others. So I will NOT do it. Please do not ask. I hope you understand.

12-BACK ACTION FIGURE CARDS
I actually created this card back months ago as an experiment. I was curious to see what a vintage KENNER Star Wars 12-back card would look like with photos my own custom action figures replacing the main 12 character line-up.
Of course I could not leave out Boba Fett, so this became a “13-Back”

LANDSPEEDER
When Hasbro released the AWESOME Saga Landspeeder with Luke Skywalker about three years ago, I saw no reason to keep the previous versions of Luke’s speeder in my collection. I sold them off.
However, for reasons of nostalgia, I will ALWAYS fondly remember my Vintage Kenner Landspeeder’s BOX design.
While replacing the damaged box for my Saga Landspeeder, I created a windowless box that pays homage to the vintage Kenner days.

X-WING FIGHTER
With the release of the Power FX X-Wing Fighter from 1998, I got rid of the “dinky” out of scale X-Wings from the Vintage Kenner and early Hasbro releases.
And with every subsequent release of the NEW X-Wing design (Red Leader’s X-Wing, Dagobah X-Wing, and now Luke’s Skywalker’s X-Wing) I always made sure to pick up a few.
Now my Rebel squadron is 30 X-Wings strong.
For the X-Wings whose packagings were damaged in the flood, I created window-less box designs in the rough dimensions of the Red Leader X-Wing package.

RADIO CONTROLED JAWA SANDCRAWLER
I must confess that the box for my Radio Controlled Jawa Sandcrawler was NOT damaged in the flood.
However, from the day I bought it back in 1979, the box was in VERY rough shape.
Furthermore, I never cared for Kenner’s package design for this toy. I thought it was very clumsy the way the toy seemed to be cut off along the top of the photo by the extended arm holding the remote control and by the STAR WARS logo.
I took this opportunity to make a new customized box design.

IMPERIAL TROOP TRANSPORTER
When I saw the extent of the water damage to the box of my vintage Kenner Imperial Troop Transporter, I was CERTAIN that the toy was history.
But I was lucky.
The electronics actually still work!!

CREATURE CANTINA ACTION PLAYSET
This toy was a birthday gift to myself back in 1979 when I turned 12.
I’ve always loved the toy, so I was heartbroken when the box was damaged in the flood.
Fortunately, the cardboard backdrop for this toy survived un-scathed!
In fact, I used the actual toy to take the photo for this package design!

VEHICLE MAINTENANCE ENERGIZER
Now here’s one group of boxes I was HAPPY to re-design!
I have about six or seven of these VME’s mint in their box for my Rebel Base personel.
ALL of the boxes were damaged in the flood.
Now seeing as these machines ONLY appeared in A New Hope, and seeing as the Kenner box design was beyond silly, a new box design was in order.

DEATH STAR SPACE STATION
As of last night, I now own 3 of these AWESOME playsets MINT and COMPLETE.
I actually did some minor customizing to the playsets themselves by giving them updated customized stickers (downloaded off the web) and by doing some minor Photoshop work on the cardboard wall inserts and then printing new ones.
I photographed one of my assembled Death Stars, and then “populated” the photo (via Photoshop) with my custom figures and others.

TRI-POD LASER CANNON / RADAR LASER CANNON
Once again, these box designs were created to store the various loose POTF II Tri-Pod and Radar Laser Cannons that I own.
But I wanted the design to be reminiscent of the closed window-less box from the Vintage Kenner Days:

TAUNTAUN
There were NO vintage Kenner Tauntaun boxes damaged in my flood because ALL of my vintage Tauntauns were (mint but) LOOSE to begin with.
I’ve therefore taken this opportunity to create box designs for them. The boxes are the same dimensions as Kenner’s vintage box, but my design is vertical instead of horizontal like Kenner’s.

AT-AT: All Terrain Armored Transport

EWOK ASSAULT CATAPULT:
Not one box survived the flood. All seven of my catapults need new boxes. This is what I designed.
My design has the same dimensions as Kenner ‘s vintage box, but it is horizontal as opposed to their vertical design.

SPEEDER BIKE
Virtuallly ALL of my Speeder Bikes are the Hasbro POTF II version.
And they escaped the flood un-damaged.
However I DO have six vintage Kenner bikes that ALL lost their boxes.
Now they will be stored in boxes with this design. I'm actually kinda GLAD about it too. I always found Kenner's original designs VERY silly. I mean, what is Chief Chirpa doing there? Asking the Biker Scout for a friggin' ride?

By far, the BIGGEST packaging causualties in this flood were suffered by my fleet of POTJ Tie Interceptors.
But this was my chance to develop a CLOSED package design without a window (in homage to Kenner’s vintage Style) . Here’s what I came up with:

JABBA THE HUTT ACTION PLAYSET
Very soon, I hope to be updating my Vintage Jabba The Hutt Action Playset with the beautifully-sculpted Jabba the Hutt figure kit offered by Andrew Rosario.

Darklord, that really sucks, what happened to your home and collection :(
But those designs you've made are excellent! I especially like the designs of the starfighters (X-Wing, Y-Wing, TIE Interceptor) and the Tri-pod cannon, radar cannon and Snowspeeder. But the rest are just as cool. How long did it take you to make all of these?!

So sorry to hear about the flood, but those new boxes are better by far. You have got to get pix of your collection in all its glory when you are done. It sounds like you have one impressive collection.

Very cool work. I really like the way the new versions look.
As for insurance, I had a close call recently myself. I live in an apartment, and a few weeks ago there was a fire in one of the units in the building next to mine. Apparently that unit wound up totally destroyed, and there was fire and water damage to another couple of apartments. There was some concern as to whether or not the fire had spread to other buildings, and the fire department made their way into my place. Thankfully there had been no spread, especially since there is a firewall between my building and the building where the fire was.
But this was a major reality check. So much so that I made my way to my insurance company and got my place insured. I made certain that they would cover my collection here as well as at my storage unit. It's about $300 a year, but the peace of mind that I have now regarding my collection is considerable. And when you compare that cost to what we've spent over the years for our collections, it's almost insignifigant.

Roberto, these are all fantastic! I know full well all about flooding, since last year the smelly waters of Lake Pontchartrain entered my collection room (due to Hurricane Katrina) about a foot and a half deep, destroying a few dioramas. I've learned my lesson since then though!

Those package designs look great and look alot better than the originals and the window boxes.
Please post some pics of the actual boxes when you make them I'd really like ot see them as I'm sure would lots of other people.

Roberto, the custom boxes all look fantastic. Sorry to hear about the flooding, I've been there before, it isn't fun.
That Jabba's Palace box is probably my favorite. I recoginze your custom Luke, did you make that Jabba as well? It looks much better than the Ultra version.

Thanks so much for the kind comments and the words of support!
Your friendship and compassion has made this painful situation FAR more bearable and tolerable.
As I'm sure you can all imagine, ALL SORTS of horrible things run through your mind when you are suddenly confronted with the partial destruction of your beloved STAR WARS toy collection (well... the BOXES anyway). When you discover 30 years of history and personal memories all soggy like that, it seems that leaping off the nearest bridge is a VERY viable option. :'(
But as I've said before, being a part of this wonderful STAR WARS customizing community has been such an inspiration to me, that the "creative juices" began flowing almost immediately after witnessing the disaster.
I actually asked myself, "What would a true CUSTOMIZER do in my situation? Would he give up? Would he simply shrug his shoulders, sell off what he could of the collection and never look back?"
HECK NO!!!!
I quickly realized that it is in the SPIRIT of a true customizer to sometimes create unique pieces of fine art (yes, I said ART!!) out of less than NOTHING! All of us here on these boards have seen some of the FINEST custom action figures and dioramas created out of discared toy parts, ordinary household items, plain ol' trash", and yes, even out of... bad situations.
Other collectors and customizers have gone through far WORSE than my little flood. They've lost much more, and have still come out okay.
Daigo-bah's run-in with huricane Katrina comes to mind.
After I was done feeling sorry for myself, I saw that I had NO RIGHT to call myself a "customzer" unless I could use my creativity to turn this situation around. After all, the toys themselves were not damaged.
Unless I could correct this (relatively) minor incident with my God-given customizing abilities, had NO BUSINESS in counting myself among the proud ranks of customzers like Chewie, Daigo-bah, Findswoman, Master_Phurby, Owen Driscol, Sith fire-30, MK17, Alex Newborn, Dan Curto, Glassman 6, Master Gunzz, EU CustomMan, Herb, Beedo, Rick UK, Bantha 5, scoobacca, DarthJace, and Darth _Deastron (just to name a few. I love ALL you guys, even the ones I neglected to mention.).
Less than 24 hours later, I was hard at work on the computer creating my first box design.
3 Months later, I had completed this modest body of work. And there are MORE in progress.
Each of these box designs have fully rendered lids and side panels complete with vintage style Kenner "proof-of purchase seals" !
So far, I have only printed the boxes for the small "accessory"- type toys (Vehicle Maintenance Energizer, Tripod Laser Cannon, Radar Laser cannon) .
The boxes were professionally laser-printed on flat cardstock (white on the surface, "kraft brown" on the back), cut and then folded into finshed boxes. The finished boxes look very professional.
I have NOT created cardboard inserts for any of these boxes, so everything is being packed with packing popcorn inside its new customized box.
Also, I have decided that ALL VEHICLES (regardless of size or weight) will be packaged in the heavier, stronger "corrugated cardboard" style boxes... everything from HUGE AT-ATs to Luke's small Landspeeder.
Therefore, the graphics for these boxes will be printed as flat artwork on contact paper, and then carefully applied to a blank white custom-sized corrugated cardboard box.
This is different from the vintage Kenner days when smaller vehicles (as well as playsets) were packaged in the thinner "chipboard"-type cardboard boxes.
That Jabba's Palace box is probably my favorite. I recoginze your custom Luke, did you make that Jabba as well? It looks much better than the Ultra version.

Quite a few STAR WARS friends have reacted strongly to my custom box design for my custom Jabba the Hutt Playset. I guess partially becuase it is just so colorful and it "leaps" out at the viewer.
This design is one of my favorites from the batch too. The Jabba The Hutt figure is indeed a CUSTOM FIGURE. It was sculpted by another customizer (The EXTREMELY TALENTED Andrew Rosario... heck of a nice guy too!!), and then molded and cast as a static white resin kit.
Believe me when I tell you, the level of fine detail of these castings is absolutely SUPERB! It is a FAR more accurate Jabba sculpt than Hasbro or Kenner has EVER come up with. I have always found the Episode I / Ultra Jabba sculpt offered by Hasbro to be a bit "off". He seemed to be sculpted with... well... female breasts! The Jabba puppet seen in ROTJ always had layered rolls of fat on his upper chest... just like THIS custom sculpt.
I have custom painted and converted this static resin kit into a poseable figure for my custom playset
