Title: Computer Help & Tech Support
Post by: Chris on January 25, 2003, 02:07 PM
I just wanted to let everyone know that there is a large Internet Worm going around "shutting servers down" and slowing down the internet. Microsoft servers are what is being affected. You may notice that sites don't load and this could be the reason. Just a heads-up. Read the article at CNN for more- http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/internet/01/25/internet.attack/index.html

Post by: DSJ™ on January 25, 2003, 04:39 PM
That's one nasty virus worm that went around. I noticed I could not access other sites early in the morning starting around 1am. This worm called Sapphire or SQL Slammer, has been likened to the Code Red bug of July, 2001.

Some sites are still affected at this time. Here's another report on this virus:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/news/archive/2003/01/25/national0554EST0482.DTL?tag=sd (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/news/archive/2003/01/25/national0554EST0482.DTL?tag=sd)

Title: Custom Desktop Icons?
Post by: BobaShek on March 23, 2003, 04:12 PM
Does anyone know of any good sites where I can find custom desktop icons, specifically SW or LOTR ones? I just got Windows XP the other day, and it set all my SW icons back to the default ones. :-\

If not, I just need something that will match my desktop: http://www.jedidefender.net/hosted/coleman/images/mydesktopXP1.JPG

Thanks. :)

Title: What screen resolution and monitor size are you on?
Post by: JediMAC on April 4, 2003, 07:27 PM
It's come to my attention that I haven't stepped up with the times and switched to a higher screen resolution on my monitor.  I'm currently kickin' it at only 800 x 600, which I like 'cause it's a lot bigger and easier to see, not to mention clearer.  But I can certainly fit a lot more onto the screen with more res, which I'm considering switching to (like 1024 x 768).

I've got a 17" monitor at home, and a nice 19"er at work, so the actual size isn't so much an issue for me.

Anyways, what are all of you folks looking at right now?  What's your resolution and how big a screen do you have?
Title: Re: What screen resolution and monitor size are you on?

As you know I have a 17 inch with resolution at 1024x768.

Must be an old guy thing.  Small screen, low res.

Same as you Matt.

New 'puter in the fall.  Hoping DVD burner prices are sufficiently down by then.  Still running the 333 MHz (w. 584 MB ram).  It works fine, for now, though it was pretty funny to see my wife cursing the machine given that she has a 1.8 G laptop.  Still, my home machine is faster than the one at work.  54 months without defragmenting and counting.  Welcome to the government. :-\

Title: AOL sucks
Post by: Sith Bounty Hunter on June 23, 2003, 12:34 PM
AOL could possibably be the worst internet service in the history of the planet. Sometimes it takes me 10 minutes to get on the internet. It is so slow and it kickes me off all the time! >:(
Title: Re: AOL sucks
Post by: Nicklab on June 23, 2003, 01:23 PM
And this surprises you?  Stop living in the stone age.  Get a cable modem, or DSL.  It'll make you smile. ;D
Title: Re: AOL sucks
Post by: JoshEEE on June 23, 2003, 04:31 PM
And if you can't afford Cable or DSL (or it isn't in your area) at least get off the AOL bandwagon. Try MSN, or Earthlink....or better yet, the local ISP in your town.

They'll all be better than AOL was.
Title: Re: AOL sucks
Post by: dustrho on June 23, 2003, 04:36 PM
There's only one good thing about AOL... it's what brought my wife & I together.  I met my wife back in 1998 when AOL first implemented the "Photo Personal" section.  My wife had posted a picture of herself and a brief bio, I emailed her, we emailed back & forth, started chatting online, started speaking on the phone, and then we started dating.  We've been married for 2.5 years and we've been together for just about 5 years.

So, you're right about how AOL sucks, but they're not the only ISP out there.  Get either DSL or cable modem access.  If that's not available in your area I would definitely hook up with Earthlink.  I had them for almost 4 years before FINALLY being able to get DSL.  They're definitely the BEST ISP for 56k dial-up access.

Hehe. Ah, yes, an internet dating success story. Keep in mind that for every couple like you two that met and married after meeting on AOL, there were also:

51,566,482 online meetings that seemed promising...but never produced a real life meeting.
9,443,291 people that met online and decided the other person looked NOTHING like they described once they finally sent that picture.
5,098,222 online relationships that failed after they met in real life.
1,170,224 actual 1st dates that never produced a 2nd date.
729,002 married people that cheated on their spouses with the people they met in the "Singles" chat room.
10,043 Guys and Gals that met their special someone online and proceeded to stalk their new love to the point of a restraining order
5,201 Pedophiles that used AOL to meet a nice underage boy or girl.
2,031 Pedophiles that used AOL to meet a nice undercover cop posing as an underage boy or girl.
1,042 people that met someone whom they are happily dating
520 couples that met someone who they are happily dating and plan to marry.

I just got off AOL a couple of months back I think in March or Feburary.  When I called to cancel I think I ended up with someone in India or another part of the world not in the USA because of the way her asscent sounded and the way she talked about a letter being sent to me via United States Postal Service.  I since have Verizon DSL and am happy.  I still miss some stuff about AOL like seeing my sent mail, email recepit and some other small stuff.

I hate AOL with a pasion!!!  It's a pain in the ass to remove all of their software, when you get rid of it.  AOL has the poorest customer service.   They are rude to their customers, and take this "we don't need you attitude."  I hate the way they mass mail their crappy discs to everyone  and their brother.  I heard that there is a group that mass mails these disc back to them, and has them pay the shipping.  Has anyone heard of this???

Title: Surfing the Net Behind a Firewall at Work? HELP NEEDED!
Post by: dustrho on September 2, 2003, 08:14 PM
I can access just about every website on the Net when I'm at work, but for some reason I can't access JediDefender.  I can get on all the "other" Star Wars related forums, but not here.  It's driving me nuts!   >:(

I remember using websites that allowed you to enter the URL into it, and you could then browse ANY website if your company had a firewall (or internet filtering) set up.  The sad thing is that I can't remember any of those sites.  I had about 5 sites that I had used in the past, but I can't remember any of them.

Does anyone here have any possible tips or suggestions on how to get around a company firewall?  Please share your secrets... thanks!   8)

Well, avoiding discussions of work and internet surfing, here's my suggestion...

Just give your friendly network admin a quick call or email, and explain the issue. The problem would take about 5 seconds worth of effort on their end
Title: Re: Surfing the Net Behind a Firewall at Work? HELP NEEDED!
Post by: dustrho on September 2, 2003, 09:39 PM
Well, the problem with that is that I'm a consultant working in the Security department of a bank.  I can't just ask them to give me access since I'm a consultant there.  I was trying to find a way to avoid asking anyone there about getting through their firewall.  I did think about asking this one guy about it, but I've only been there 3 weeks and I want to get a fulltime job with them first.
Title: Re: Surfing the Net Behind a Firewall at Work? HELP NEEDED!
Post by: BigDumbWookiee on September 2, 2003, 11:05 PM
I'd say to just forget about it for the time being, especially since we are talking about bank security. Anything you use (sites or otherwise) to get past a firewall is still going to be seen by the network techs, and most likely, since we're talking about a banks system, they are going to log any sort of activity related to getting around the firewall. You might be risking quite a lot by trying to get around a bank security firewall. Did you sign a network access agreement, or was it in your contract?
Title: Re: Surfing the Net Behind a Firewall at Work? HELP NEEDED!
Post by: dustrho on September 2, 2003, 11:16 PM
Everyone that works at the bank must sign one of those forms, so yes I did sign one.  Everyone in the Security department surfs at their own leisure, but I'm not comfortable enough to ask them if I could have that same access.  I know for a fact that they don't monitor internet access all the time, because there's only two people who handle it.  They only check logs when managers have suspicion of their employees wasting too much time surfing the net.
Title: Re: Surfing the Net Behind a Firewall at Work? HELP NEEDED!
Post by: JoshEEE on September 3, 2003, 02:00 PM
Back when I was 20, I did a job like that.

Rest assured that your net techs can check your logs, but they DON'T usually care enough to do it, unless they have reason to. Like your manager asking them for a report. Or sheer boredom.

However, you trying to break their firewalls gives them a reason....and who knows? They might get ticked and send a little email to your boss with a log of what you were up to. If you think your boss wouldn't like that.....then you should probably stop trying to beat your techs.

Instead, make a friendly phone call, or WALK to their desk and ask them for help getting to this site. They may solve this problem for you, or at least get you a definitive answer like: "We blocked this particular port because people spend too much time on Bulletin boards during the day" or something.

That would give you a major hint to do your browsing at home, because they're watching YOU.

 :)

My advise is to stop surfing the net at work!
You weren't hired there to surf in the first place but the occasional "look" isn't a big deal.  When you find yourself having more time to surf the net than do work then there is a problem... at least that is what we have found with some people at the bank! :P

Maybe someone out there can help me. I've been having a problem with Microsoft Word. The computer freezes everytime I load it. Title: Java Problems
Post by: BigDumbWookiee on November 8, 2003, 07:56 PM
Well for all you tech savvy out there...

A few days ago, I was on a Java Based chat site, dont remember what, and I was prompted to install a Java Runtime Environment. I did, and now things just arent the same. I've since uninstalled it in Control Panel, but Im still having problems with sites that use Java.

For instance:
On Rebelscum, when I try to log in (I downloaded Netscape just now in hopes things would work), I cant get logged in.

Cartoon Network, the Clone Wars Cartoon "Choose Your Own Jedi" Java app doesnt work

Custom.StarWars.com: Photo menu doesnt load in IE 6, submit (I click on a photo but it does nothing, kind of like the above login problem) doesnt work with Netscape.

Any help would be appreciated!

are you getting any specific error messages, or are things just not working?

Things just arent working. I guess it isnt necessarily Java, but all of the problems so far have been related to Java...
Title: Re: Java Problems
Post by: jokabofe on November 9, 2003, 04:10 AM
ok, well the first thing i could tell you to try would be to go to this site:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html

and download the newest version of the java runtime environment (jre) for windows (i'm just assuming you're using windows of course) - it will be the in the "Download J2SE v 1.4.2_02" section. you want to download and install the file that says "jre" - not the "sdk" as that is the software development kit... that won't do anything for you. install that and then check back with some of those sites and see if you are still having trouble. let me know what happens - good luck  ;D

Awe CRAP!

Someone at Rebelscum suggested installing Microsoft Java Virtual Machine. I did that, and it fixed the Java problem with Cartoon Network, but the Submit Button problems with netscape weren't fixed, nor was the Custom Star Wars site. So, I installed the above, it didnt fix anything, and now the Cartoon Network thing doesnt work, even after I uninstalled the above, and reinstalled MSJVM. ARG!

Oh Im definately at that level, trust me. This thing has been crappin out on me for some time now.

I would just format it and start anew, but my satellite internet was total hell to get working, and it took a few months to tweak it just right, and I dont want to go through all of it again. If I could find another ISP, I'd just wipe out the comp and start over...

Post by: BigDumbWookiee on November 9, 2003, 10:25 PM
LOL! Dont be sorry man, its not your fault my computer sucks butt....

I finally managed to fix it, on the Netscape side. It's a proxy related problem. My satellite has some issues with proxy. The DirecWay software thinks proxy has to be used, but it doesnt, and the connection doesnt work right if you choose it. But if you disable it completely, it doesnt work either. So you have to convince the DirecWay software that proxy is enabled, but convince the browsers that it is disabled. Yeah, thats it :)
Title: Microsoft/HP XP Help
Post by: Darth Kenobi on November 10, 2003, 11:32 PM
Since I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong and since HP people don't seem to see the problem I'm experincing through my emails I guess I will try to see if any of you people can help me.
Long Story:

A few weeks ago back in Sept/October my HP Pravillion 7965 had a probelm after I decided to do a system restore.  I ended up having an "Unmountable Boot Error" Message.  I emailed HP about it and there sent me a Recovery Console CD (Without Instructions).  I emailed them again and asked for instructions and got them.  I been trying to get it to work but was having trouble getting one of the steps to work: Getting the prompt to be C:\Windows and then being ask to enter a password.  I just got it to finally get to this step today and finsihed with the other steps but nothing seemed to be fixed with my computer, I got alot of missing files while windows was starting up.  I then decide to re do it but when I get to the step of entering the password it states that my password is invalid (I just been hitting enter since I don't have a password on my computer) and it reboots my computer which causes me to have to go through all this again.
I emailed HP again afterwards and they tell me that Recovery Console can't enter a password (Which it did somehow) and give me steps on how to fix my on going problems by using safe mode.  The only problem with this is I can't get in even in safemode so I can't go through the steps that I have to delete the password.    The rep. also states that the RC cd will help an error message "lsass.exe" that I get yet I can't run the chkdsk /r since I can't get in a C:\ pompt since it only gives the option of picking a number (to choose which OS I wish to repair) and then asks for my admistration password, which I don't have.
If any of you have any help I will really appeciate it.
Thanks

The joy of pre-installed XP.

Unless you can get your hands on a really good admin password retriever, your pretty much outta luck on the current install (which means a format/reinstall)

I'm having a similar problem with PCs at work. Nobody knows the admin password for the XP machines in my classroom and I have one that is pretty much a really heavy paper weight. CD-ROM drive won't recognize any CD unless it is booted into XP, and ignores boot floppy disks (yes it is configured to search A:, CD-ROM:, C:) so there is nothing I can do with it at the moment. The other 2 XP machines I did have to do a full format and reinstall everything because nobody knows the admin pass

i seem to be having some strange things going on with my pc... i just reformatted my hard drive and installed windows xp media center edition. i upgraded from windows 2000.

a) i can't seem to turn my pc off. not that i shut it off all that much, but when i click the shut down icon, it just restarts.

b) animated icons (such as my avatar) are not animating in internet explorer.

i've done some searching through google looking for some answers, but can't seem to find any information about how to fix what i'm dealing with... anybody have these same problems? how did you fix them?

**edit - ok, never mind that first one, i went back to google and did a little more searching and think i found the problem. now, about that damn dancing stormtrooper...

**another edit - looks like the "fix" did more damage than good... now i just get a blue screen of death before rebooting  :-\  :'(

Maybe that will work?

IE is quite the buggy little bugger, on my old PC, running WinME, IE would crash on average 5 times a day. This tends to be because of resource requirements by IE which is heavily integrated into the Win9x/XP infrastructure. Do what I did,  and go Mozilla, an open-source web browser based off the Netscape engine. It makes IE and NS look like an Atari 2600 compared to it's SNES-goodness.  ;D

joka, what was the fix you tried? a clean re-install of XP could do the trick if as previously mentioned not all of the files were installed the first time. you may want to look into installing from a different copy of XP as well just in case the copy you have is flawed.

Check to make sure all of your hardware is on the windows HCL (Hardware compatibility list). If it is try to format and install it again. Windows installations sometimes just fail. if they are an unexpected/untrapped error you may not even get a message that tells you there is a problem. If both of those dont help, try kicking it

I had this problem with my Compaq desktop a few years ago. There was something about WINXP that messed up some of the systems codes. I am not sure what codes they were but the techs at Best Buys told me to change something int hte Config and it fixed the problem.

Or if you want one option that I was told was to hold the power button after the shutting down screen appears to turn off the CPU.

Post by: Angry Ewok on January 21, 2004, 04:56 PM
Written from my Macintosh, instead of my Windows laptop.

! ANGRY !

Okay so I switched off my laptop this afternoon and it gives me some kinda bull about explorer.exe not wanting to quit, so I force it to quit - hey, I'm a busy guy and I force crap to close from time to time (Call Of Duty, Quicktime, Quake, etc), so I didn't think anything of it.

Fast forward to this afternoon -

I switch on my laptop, everything's normal. I go to My Connections from the Start button, I dialup while listening to 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond', I go to AIM to harrass Chris Berry once I'm online- and then something weird happens. The laptop locks up, and I get major ass lag from hell.

I reboot.

Now that I'm back on the laptop, the toolbar/start button jazz is all gone, all the stuff on my desktop is gone (Trash, shortcuts, etc), and the right click doesn't work.

I hit CTRL+ALT+Delete, the Task Manager opens, and I see my CPU Usage is at 100%. I've got no idea what the hell is going on, as I'm an idiot with computers - BUT - I managed to pull up Norton and I'm scanning for viruses as we speak. Of course, the Norton thing expired not long ago, so I don't know if that'll be any help.

Help, somebody. Tell me what to do.  :'(

in the task manager you will see a processes tab.sort by the cpu by clicking the title and see what is using your processor. If it is explorer or system idle process you probobly have a serious problem. if it is a virus you should be able to clearly see which one. Also check your event viewer control panel->administrative tools->event viewer, and see if any service failed to start. dont be terribly worried if you have a lot of stuff in there it is quite typical i have 3500 events and my pc is fine. report your findings and i can try to help you through it

Okay, I rebooted and I've got 20 processes, CPU usage at 100%, umm, here's the top 3 biggest memory users...

svchost.exe - system - 00 - 17,504k
explorer.exe - Brad Smith - 99 - 12,992k
spoolsv.exe - system - 00 - 4,064k

That 99 is just bizarre looking, because the rest of the 20 something process things are 0 to 1-3.  :-X

do you have the ability to log on as a different user, if you can see if that fixes it. your profile could be corrupted. you can do this by ctrl-alt-dlt -> log off. If you cant do that, i am out of ideas, you could try to install windows over itself again, but that rarely works

I would first try to install windows over top over your current windows. insert the windows cd and boot the computer. windows should recognize that windows is already installed at which point it will ask you if you want to repair it. answer yes to that. it will ask some more questions and it will take off. once it is finished your windows will either work perfectly, it wont boot at all or you will have the same problem. if you want to email me, i can give you my phone number and walk you through it step by step...my email is mikerutan@comcast.net i will keep my email open

I'm also a helpdesk/pc tech so I might be able to help. My first thought was to use the winxp recovery cd and re-install xp.  Also, do you have "spybot search&destroy" and "ad-aware" anti-spyware programs? you can download them for frree and they search your system for spyware programs which can cause the problem you described.

Two helpdesk techs here, and no one recommended the easiest and first thing to try. He's on Windows XP, he's got System Restore.  :)

AE....

START, ALL PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEM TOOLS, SYSTEM RESTORE.

Now...click on "restore my computer to an earlier time". A calendar will pop up.

pick a restore point a week ago or something, when you know your computer was working well. You will not lose any documents, emails, downloads or files....you will lose any new programs or system settings that have made their way onto your computer since then....and you'll have to reinstall or reset those.

Give that a try before reformatting or something and let us know if it works.

Woops sorry. Those directions might help.

Ok, you said you have Task Manager available so click on New Task.

Then, in the run window type:

C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Windows should find each of those directories on the drop down list as you start typing them anyway.

With any luck, that will bring up the System Restore wizard I told you about.

That's good to hear. System Restore is pretty handy for un-sticking anything that has gotten stuck on your computer by mistake, and undoing those installs you wish you could take back.  :)

Here's hoping your PC stays online from now on, but making backups is never a bad idea.

i've had the same problems before, two things i can think of off the top of my head:

(a) try to re-install the dvd software that your dvd player came with, or try something different. personally i used to use cyberlink powerdvd, but recently switched to nvdvd fom nvidia.

(b) sometimes if the ram in your pc is all being used, or isn't released when it's not being used, the dvd video and audio can be out of sync. try re-starting your pc and see if that does anything.

I can say for an almost guaranteed fact that I'll be getting rid of both of my accounts ASAP and switching to GMail

1 GB of free storage!

The only thing that worries me is the Spam filter...Hotmail really has done wonders in the last 3-4 months.  Yahoo is garbage...absolute garbage in terms of Spam.  Hell though, with a Gig of storage I can tolerate a little spam!

Hmm, as long as I can have some sort of filtering (my hotmail is just set on high and I check regularly for incoming stuff), I may switch.  Hotmail seems to have been decreasing account size as time passes.  Might be my imagination, but I'm forever running around 70%.

I would agree that the amount of spam through hotmail has decreased dramatically.  I'd almost abandoned my first hotmail account due to the 30-40 spam/porn emails a day that went into the junk mail.

Sorry, I know it's an inane question that could easily be answered by trial and error, but I have no desire to perform a $2.50 experiment to find out.

Outside of what is on my computer already (basic Dell software for burning DVD/CD) do I need anything else to duplicate a DVD?  The use is quasi-legal anyway, my wife needs to make a disc of some injury footage from some discs and wants to collate it onto one disc for teaching purposes.  This is not to say I won't use the information otherwise, but I am curious about any trials and tribulations I may have that others have already been through.
Title: Re: Stupid tech question on burning DVD's
Post by: Rob L on May 6, 2004, 12:12 PM
If there is no copy protection, and the data will fit onto one DVD, then your software should have some sort of simple back-up option.  That is: read this disc, record a hard drive image of said disc, burn the image onto this blank disc.  Simple.

BUT, if there are any problems fitting onto a single-layer disc (most commercial discs are dual-layer), or any pesky Macrovision issues then you’ll need some more software.  I can tell you what to do if you want to shoot me a PM, but for the purposes of posting here, I don’t have any idea how this stuff works and can’t begin to advise you regarding how to backup a DVD.  ;)

Thanks Rob.

My software does come up with the immediate option of make an exact duplicate of this disc? so I suspected it was straightforward for the most part.  I'll see what happens with a test disc and will pm you if I have any specific technical issues.  Ahem.

I have an external LiteOn DVD Burner. It comes with software but any pre-packaged burner software sucks anyways. If you want to duplicate entire DVD's with everything you must buy DVD X-Copy Gold. It will allow you to copy an entire DVD to one disc at DVD quality.
You can get it here. http://www.nycsoftware.com/DVDxCopy/products_dxcgold.htm

I bought it and it is great. It is simple you put in your DVD and a blank disc, then hit the copy button. Within an hour you have a perfect duplication. I highly recomend this software. This particular software will be banned soon due to the copy technology it has. The ball already started rolling on that.
Better get it soon before it is taken off the market. What is nice about it, it will also copy some Computer, PS2, & X-Box Games.

Oh my. Speaking from my past experience with swapping motherboards, it's one of the worst hassles to go through.  :-\ You basically need to re-register all of your system components since the board swap wreaks havoc with the Win registry, which calls for a bit of reinstallation or, ideally, a clean install.

First, have you attempted repairing Windows by running the OS from CD-ROM?

I'd suggest changing the boot sequence of your drives in the MB's BIOS so it boots from your CD drive first, with your XP CD inside. You can select a "repair Windows" option from the prompt, which will re-install Windows over your existing installation, but keep your existing settings. It's still not a pleasant or automatic thing however, and will require several restarts and you holding your PC's hand through the process.

Of course, when dealing with touchy problems like this, look before you leap! Read up as much as you can before you do it. Check out eldergeek's faqs, they can be pretty helpful:

Elder Geek (http://www.theeldergeek.com/replace_motherboard.htm)

Hope you get your problem sorted out and good luck!

Thanks for the reply, and i did some research and thats where i headed, eldergeek that is, looks like i just might do format and reinstall of everything. Might go a little easier if i just start from scratch.

One additional thing to beware of. Windows XP tracks the components of your hardware, so if more than just your motherboard (I think it may be three things) changes....it thinks you are installing it on a new computer, and accuses you of such. You then have to call MS or get online and punch in your PID to fix it.

Just one little pain in the butt that you might not have been forewarned about.

All is well with the switch, and as Tydirium said, yes it was quite the hassle. I had to do a complete format and reinstall. But it is workin good now, the only problem i got now is it keeps freezing up on me, would the temp have anything to do with that?

i would say the most common reasons for freezing are (a) processor gets too hot, (b) ram memory is all being used and not being released by programs when you close them, or (c) trying to run too many programs at the same time.

when your computer freezes, does it just stay on a screen, or do you get the blue screen of death? if you get the bsod, try writing down any error messages that you see there and then research them online. usually gets me answers  ;)

Can someone help me out? I’m trying to do that ‘zip-a-tone’ effect on some art… like the tiny black dots they use for doing gray tones in B&W art. Is there a filter or way to do this in photoshop? Thanks a helluvalot for any help.
Title: Re: HELP! with photoshop...
Post by: Rob on July 17, 2004, 10:14 PM
I found this online:

Quote
There are several ways. The easiest is to go ahead and fill in the desired areas with gray tone. Then, select Mode>Bitmap. In the pulldown menu, select "halftone screen." Select "round" for the shape, set the angle to 45 degrees, and set the line frequency to whatever you desire

Another easy way to do it would be to just get a zip-a-tone (or dotted) sheet that you like, scan it, then put it over whatever you want the dots on and just make it a multiply layer (or scroll through the blending options for the desired effect)....

I attempted to create my own zip-a-tone using Photoshop and then printing onto clear adhesive paper. Photoshop is limited in the pattern department. To do it, I actually created a square with fill that I either scanned, created or experimented with in Photoshop. This took forever and the results were ok.

I think the scanning the pattern idea is best as long as you can make it fit the area you want filled.

I've used things like old newspaper dot patterns, things from drawings or photos I liked and my own drawing. I have heard that an artist once xeroxed a picture that had this amazing texture from an Elvis album cover and every now and then you can tell which area he's using if you are familiar with the album cover. I check into that more, but nothing is taboo if you blow it up or cut it out and use it for fill or tone.

The only thing that can be a pain in photoshop is printing it. Halftones do not show up as well unless you know how to break them down for printing purposes and seperate them out. Be careful about grays that are not black pattern or fill. Same for the scanning, do not scan it in as b & w. Use halftone or color and then break it down in Photoshop after the scan. Hopefully you have a decent scanner. Anyway, I'm done. If I can think of anything else I'll let you know and let me know what you end up doing and how it works out for you.

If you also have Illustrator, in it you can easily make a dot pattern and use it as a fill in whatever shape you want. Save the Illustrator file as an eps and open it in Photoshop. Use it as a layer over your artwork.

There are filters out that do that effect, though. Try Screenworks, Flaming Pear, DigiEffects. Alot of those filters are freeware and shareware. I found a really cool "Nightvision" filter from a company called Adrenaline that kicks ass!

I'm not sure if we have a Computer Help thread - so if we don't maybe this could become one...

Here's my issue.  I'm trying to burn a CD with Nero 5 on my new computer.  I do everything the way I used to on my old computer, but now when I hit the magic '8th icon' to start my burning, it asks me to save an image file.  I have no idea what an image file is and I do not want to save one and if I go ahead and save one - it doesn't burn the audio CD.  Anyone know why it just won't start burning when I tell it to?

I should add that under my 'choose recorder' options - it shows my DVD burner only - because of my two drives it's the only one that is a burner, but it is also capable of writing CD's.  I think that despite the fact that I created an audio cd project, put audio tracks on it, and am clicking on burn CD - it thinks it's making a DVD.

Thanks in advance.

Post by: Rob L on April 16, 2005, 05:41 PM
An image is just a file backup of a CD…you can use the “image writer” instead of your burner if you want to burn the disc later or make multiple copies from the disc’s image file.

You can either save the image and then burn it with the File>Burn Image option or switch your recorder to the DVD-writer.  As you say, only recorders show up in the “recorder options” list, so that’s the one to choose.

That didn't work.  I tried it and when I went to 'burn image' it asked me to save another image and in circles I went.

Post by: Chris on April 16, 2005, 07:21 PM
It may be that Nero doesn't recognize your CD-Burner if burn to image is the only option. I'm not really fond of Nero v5, and this is one of the reasons: stupid little quirks.
Title: Re: Nero CD Burning question/problem
Post by: Rob on April 16, 2005, 07:28 PM
That's my latest thinking too.  After a phone call with Dell - we uninstalled Nero 5 and now the other one works okay - the guy thought there was a conflict between the two softwares.  So I'm using this crappy Sonic software for now.  Maybe if I get my hands on Nero 6 I'll give it a whirl and uninstall Sonic before hand.

Anyway - unless anyone has a link to another one, I'm going to rename this thread Computer help for everyone or something similar and let it be a JD Tech Support forum.

If it's only letting you burn to an ISO image, then your burner is set as the hard drive. You should be able to change the target burner to your CD writer fairly easily (just can't remember how off the top of my head at the minute).

While were here (not that it matters too much) but it turns out all my problems were compatability issues with Nero 5 and having a cheap, stripped down version of Record Now.

The problems are all fixed now that I 'have' the latest version of Nero 6.

It only took 2 months to get it sorted out...

Anyone know how to blur out the timecode on that copy of ROTS?  That would look sweet burned onto a dual layer dvdr without any compression
Title: Re: Computer Help & Tech Support

you'd have to blur it out frame by frame, but I believe Adobe Premiere can automate that for you. if the timecode remains in the same place throughout the film, you should be able to tell premiere to blur it's location in the first frame, and then repeat it through the rest of the frames in the film.

Someone's already done the work for you, actually. If you found that original item yourself, you'll find the other version in those same usual places.  :) I don't think it improves things any, though. It's ugly stuff.

I did see that version but the basic picture was worse.

There's a DVD rip out there now so, if I could get that, the timer prob becomes academic.  It might be a bit too scary to try and get this new version though so I might not bother  ;)

Is anyone familiar with setting up a wireless network between a laptop and a desktop computer?  We just bought a laptop, and I'm getting pretty close to getting it all figured out.  So far I've managed to enable access to the internet for the laptop, and it can also access files that are stored on the desktop.

However, the desktop can't seem to access files stored on the laptop.  I also noticed the laptop has a notification icon saying there is a network cable unplugged - are these 2 problems related?

You can use After Effects or Premiere Pro to create an adjustment layer, masked out to cover just the area you want to blur, then throw a blur plug-in onto the adjustment layer.  Then you'd have to re-export and make DVD's again.  For a file that big, it might be more trouble than it's worth.

What brand router do you have?  Linksys has free phone support for their products, when I had to get our Laptop hooked up with our two desktops, I just called them and they were real cool about helping out.  Depending on what hardware you have you might be able to get free phone support.

The icon on the tray saying a network cable is unplugged is probably for the wired network card in your laptop.  If you're using the wireless card you probably don't have a cable plugged in also (you don't really want to use both at the same time anyway).  That's not causing your problem.

There are two reasons I can think of right now as to why you aren't seeing the laptop.  The first is that if it's brand new on the network it's name hasn't registered yet and the desktop isn't finding it.  Sometimes it'll take 20 minutes or so for a computer to be recognized on a Microsoft network.

The other thing that might be causing it is that there are no shares on the laptop.  You can try to access it from the desktop using the default share (open My Network Places and use the address bar to type \\laptopname\C$ where laptopname is that of the laptop).

The other thing you can do is, from the laptop, open My Computer and right-click on the C: drive and choose Sharing.  Or  go into C: and pick a directory and do the same.  Add sharing for the drive or folder.  Then from the desktop try accessing the laptop just using the \\laptopname.  See if you see the folder or drive you shared.

My circut breaker in the basement kicked itself off last night. I came back up stairs and restarted the machine no problem. Start up was flawless, and all that. Then I click on my account (we had 3 accounts on here for my family)and I entered my password without issue. Next up, my wallpaper loaded, and the sound of start up filled the air, and then it just...stayed wallpaper.

Tried it again, same result. So this time I logged in to some one elses account to post for help.

So, please some one help me?

Post by: Dressel Rebel on November 4, 2006, 02:21 PM
Hey all-

I just moved and got Frontier DSL in my new house, like I had in my old apartment up until last week.  For some reason with the new connection, it seems that  sites like Yahoo, Google, hotmail etc. all load instantaneously like they should with DSL, but for some reason sites like JD, scum, espn, eBay do not load fast, and in some cases take minutes to load up.  Took me 10 minutes just to get to Watto's to write this.  Yet when I go to Yahoo.com or Google.com BOOM! right in.  This has been going on for 2 days since I got into the new house.

I did not install anything else new, and I still have the same McAfee security suite for antivirus protection I had in the old place.

Any ideas what might be doing this?

Thanks in advance.

Maybe that internet legislation that aims to decide what websites get all the bandwidth is being tested in your area...

(seriously though, why not just call your DSL provider?)

That was helpful.  You bastard  :)

I did have the tech over here, and he said "Hrmmm.  Yeah some of these sites are slow, huh?  ::Dressel nods and agrees::  Yeah maybe some of the servers are down or something.  I have 4 more jobs to do now, I'll call you later."

Never called.

So, I'll call a 2nd tech out.

Not too big of a deal I guess, but it's annoying when I want to visit JD and a few other sites.

My fantasy football effort will not be hindered tomorrow, Yahoo is fine.

Any other ideas are welcome though...

Sites like Google and Yahoo are connect almost directly to the backbone of the Internet.  Sites like JD and RS are usually in data farms, which are usually connected with a pretty fast connection to the backbone, but not nearly as fast as main sites.  So there's usually a speed difference there.

But thinking about it, I think it'd be more likely to be a problem with your ISP's DNS server, or their connection to the server that resolves domains.  Basically, when you type in a URL, that data shoots out to your ISP, who then sends a request to a domain controller server.  That server gets the URL, and returns the IP address associated with that URL.  That IP directs your provider where to look for the site.  For something like Google, that IP would be in the cache on your provider's server because it's so frequently accessed.  For JD, that would be accessed much less frequently, so it'd be flushed from the cache and need to be looked up every time.

Your personal PC should store most of the recent IPs from sites you've visited, which should allow it to bypass this process.  But you can fiddle with a browser not to store IPs like that and rely on your ISP.

But really... DLS sucks balls.  You should have gotten a cable modem.  Then you wouldn't have any problems.

I have a few computer questions and am hoping someone can help.

First off, this new windows version.  I get updates that don't really say what they are, just say's an update is ready.  I'm too trusting I guess, because I always ok whatever it is Microsoft wants.  This time, I got a new windows version and it sucks.  My tool bar (or whatever the thing that says "file-edit-view-favorte etc"  is) is underneath the box that shoes the website you are at.  I want it on top but I can't figure out how the hell to get it there.  My fonts are all screwed up on each website and several of my favorite links don't work.

Second, how do you make an avatar?  I've googled all over the place and I can't figure it out.  I can't find a site to make my own.

Finally, posting a picture.  Not here....at Webkinz World.  Is there a site to post a screen capture and then trim it down so it shows just the picture and not everything else on your computer screen?

Thanks-I'm too damn old for all this modern stuff and my kids aren't here to fix anything any more  :-\

I'm pretty sure if you start installing those windows updates, you can choose 'custom' install (or something like that) and then it will show you a list of items and you can check which ones you want installed and which ones you don't.

As for all the image related questions - I use Photoshop, but that's not the cheapest program in the world.  There are other simpler, cheaper options out there.

I'm going to merge this with our tech-help thread.

Try shrinking down your active window that has the image you want to capture so that's all it's showing, then press Alt-Print Screen to capture only the active window. It'll leave out everything else that's open on your desktop.

First up, Internet Explorer.  The upgrade that installed was for Internet Explorer 7.0.  You can uninstall that to go back to your previous version by going to CONTROL PANEL and then ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS.

There should be an entry for "Windows Internet Explorer 7."  The list is in alphabetical order so you'll have to scroll down to find it.  Click on it and then on the REMOVE button.  Follow the instructions from there.

If you want to keep IE 7 but just show the menu bar (File, Edit, View, etc) you can.  Open Internet Explorer and press your ALT key.  That will show the menu bar.  Click on VIEW then TOOLBARS then MENU.

I don't really know why some of your favorites wouldn't work, though.  I also don't know why fonts would be screwed up.

For the Avatar part, you're talking about making an icon that you can use on your profile here?  Those are usually just pictures that are scaled down to a certain size.

My answer for that, and for resizing pictures might be the same; Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/).

It's a free tool that will let you resize, crop, convert and save your photos.

Let's say you wanted to do a screen capture of a window you had open, you would make that the top window, press ALT+PRINT SCREEN and then open Irfanview.  Choose EDIT -> PASTE and it would fill in the screen you just captured.  Use your mouse to draw out a selection box in the window and choose EDIT -> CROP SELECTION.  Everything inside the selection you created would stay, everything else would go away.  FILE -> SAVE and save it somewhere.

Posting to the site you mentioned...Not 100% sure on that.  Once you have your file saved if that site allows you to upload then you can do it from their site.  If you're looking to host the file on-line somewhere else then Photobucket maybe?

Just as a followup to my last post, Internet Explorer 7.0 is listed as a 'critical update' by Microsoft.  That means that if you have automatic updates turned on you will eventually get IE 7.  If you do a manual Windows Update it will also install by default, you have to uncheck its box to bypass it.

You can, however, install a registry entry that will tell Windows XP not to install IE7.  It won't install as a critical update but will still be listed under "Software, Optional" so that you can choose to install it if you want.

The instructions and file to update your registry can be found on this page. (http://www.flls.org/cns/windowssecurity/ie7blocker.htm)

I've been using it on a lot of computers and haven't had any problems with it.

I'm having a problem with my HP DV9000t laptop...

It appears something is wrong with either the video card or the graphics driver; when I turn it on Windows (Vista) starts up normally but the screen stays black. It works sometimes, but most of the time I have to restart because the screen stays black. Vista has identified the error as an NVIDIA Graphics Driver problem and told me to download the update from the HP website.

So before I do this, has anyone had any experience with this before? Will this surely fix my laptop or would it be better to send it back to HP to fix since it's still under warranty?

I would say with 99% certainty that it is a driver incompatibility issue with Vista (which absolutely sucks). Go ahead and try the different drivers they suggest, that should take care of the problem.

This isn't really a computer problem as it is a home networking problem.

I recently bought a new home and the original owner wired many of the rooms with Cat 5 jacks and cabled everything down to underneath the basement stairs, where conveniently, the cable modem is connected.  I've been trying to get our computers to connect to the cable modem via the Cat 5 cables throughout the house with no luck.  A friend and I have checked the connectivity and all seems ok, but when we connected a 9-volt battery to one of the connections upstairs, we noticed about 10% of the charge was making it to the other end.  I don't know if a signal amplifier would help here (btw, no one around here sells them) or if I do have some sort of problem with the connection somewhere.

Luckily, we can connect through a wireless router, so I have some sort of a fix, but I'd prefer the security and speed of the cables.  Anyone have any advice?
Title: Re: Computer Help & Tech Support
Post by: Chris on October 27, 2007, 04:21 PM
In your basement, is there a patch panel where all of the cables from the various jacks in the house terminate? You will need to find the right port (the one that coresponds with the jack you want to use) where it is terminated and connect that with a cable to your switch/"router". Cat 5e has a specification of 328ft. before signal degradation becomes a problem so unless the cable runs are longer than that you don't need to worry about anything to do with amplification (btw, an amplifier for Cat 5e is a switch).

Jesse, if it were me I'd use the Circular Marquee tool (press the M button (shift + M if you're stuck on the rectangular one), then I'd use it to select the first eye, I'd then hold the SHIFT button down to select the second eye.  (only select the red part)  At this point you have a selection of just the red parts of both eyes.

Then I'd feather the selection just a little bit (Ctrl+Alt+D), maybe 2 or 3 or 5 pixels (maybe a lot more depending on how big your image size is) - if that's the actual size of the picture, I'd think 3 would do it.

Once that's done, I'd hit Ctrl+U to adjust the Hue/Saturation.  Slide the top slider (saturation) around until they look to be the right shade.  You can adjust brightness and saturation here too.  Make sure the 'preview' button his checked so you can see what you're doing as you do it.

The key is getting the selection right.

Little update on my home network.  Turned out all I needed was one of these (http://www.leviton.com/OA_HTML/ibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section=10359&minisite=10027).

All I had in the basement was the wiring tree, so when a computer and the cable modem was connected, there was nothing to regulate them talking to each other and they could not talk at all.  With help from my friend (since I'm out in California still) my wife now has great internet connectivity.   :D

Hopefully someone here can help me.  My desktop computer won't connect to the internet and I get a message down by the time saying that the "Local Area Connection, has limited or no connectivity".  I go into the local area connection status and hit the support tab to see a message about the limiited or no connectivity but also "This problem oocured because the network did not assign a network address to the computer".  I have tried to do the repair option but it dosen't work.  When I try to get only my Timewaner Cable tries to diagnose it but the only thing it does is statw that "... has determined that a network card incorrectly configured.  The card should be able to receive a new network address each time it connects to the internet.  Instead it is setup to usee a fixed address at all times". (I have had this problem before but usually got it fix by following the Roadrunner to try to refresh the IP Addess, but this time it can't do that).  I'm using my sister labtop which is on a wireless network (hookup to my desktop) and the internet works fine.  If I plug her laptop into the moderm it ends up getting the "Limited or no Connectivity" issue as will.

If anyone knows anything that can help it would be apperciated.

Have you done a power cycle on the modem? (power down computer, unplug your network cable, power down the modem, wait a few minutes then reconnect and boot up modem & computer)

Recently my computer will not let me access the Task Manager. It gives me a message "Task Manager blocked by Administrator.". The neat trick is this is my home computer and I am the Admin. I have no idea how it happened, I just want to reactivate it.

Any one know how I can do that?

Sounds like spyware to me. Do you have spybot and keep it updated with routine scans?

A question for Mac users...

We're going from PC to Mac tomorrow at work, and we're trying to figure out if there's a way to remap the keyboard so that it works more like a PC keyboard.  Basically, I want to take the apple key from the Mac keyboard, and put it where the Control key is on the PC keyboard, so that I can keep using the hundreds of shortcuts that I use the way that I'm used to using them.

Does anyone know of a way to do this?  We were able to get the Apple key to go where the Windows key is, but we don't want it there... we want it one more to the left.

Any help would be most appreciated.

This is true Rob.  It should pop right off.  ;)

As a mac user (school district provides me with both a mac laptop and desktop) I found it a little confusing at first going from PC to mac, but just adjusted.  It's still not the same and in many ways I prefer the PC set up, but the Mac really isn't bad once you get adjusted to it...just takes time.  I know that doesn't really answer  your question, but I thought I'd toss my two cents your way.

Last week I ended up getting some sort of virus that caused my computer to want me to log on then right after that it logs me off.  I found a way to fix it online but I had to reformat my computer anyways because it looked like there was still some left over problems with it, my desktop background was some stuipid warning about "How mutil. Virus, Torjans horses and other threats where found on my pc" so I ended up deciding to reformat.

Hey guys, I'm looking at building a new home server for multimedia streaming. The goal of this server is to provide low power consumption, small footprint and be under $500 for the hardware. What I'm wondering is if I should go with this cpu configuration or go with something different. All prices are from NewEgg so any other suggestions are appreciated.

Shuttle SG31G2 Intell Socket T(LGA775) Intell Core 2 Quad/Core 2 Duo/Dual-Core/Celeron 400 Serial support Intel G31 barbone  - $194.99 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856101039)

G.Skill 4GB (2x2Gb) 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (pc2 6400) $43.99

Those look like good specs to me (processor, HD's, RAM, etc.) but I'll say that I've never had anything but trouble with Shuttle motherboards (dying, flaking out, etc.). I know you're going for small, and that is what Shuttle is all about, but I'd never get one. I can't say that I have something better to suggest though, either. They make pretty small mini-ATX cases now and the power supply will be just about the same.

I used to do on-set editing for Hasbro commercials using one of those.  It was set up with a canopus capture card for bringing footage directly in from video assist and then we'd do rough cuts of the spot while they were shooting.

This was about 5 years ago, but in my experience the shuttle was a pain in the ass and pretty unreliable.  Then again, we were running it pretty hard and it probably could have been configured better.

Definately open to suggestions on mini-atx cases. They seem to rate pretty high on the site reviews for what its worth.

Hey guys, I was hoping someone knew the answer to this question.

I recently replaced the DVD burner on an older Gateway computer I had stored in a closet.

If I reformat the hard drive using the factory CD-Roms, will it recognize the new burner?

Yes.

Gracias. I am going to give it a try tonight.

Edited to Add:

Thanks Chris. It worked like a charm. I added Ram and reformatted the computer. Oddly enough, it runs faster and smoother than my current HP. This Gateway is about 7 or 8 years old.
