The greatest Laker ever and quite possibly the first half of the 20th Century's greatest superstar (well maybe behind the Babe) has died today at the age of 80

Now there was a Laker that I could care about. He was the heart and soul of the Lakers waaaaaay before any of those other guys.

Wow, that's very sad. Very sad. The first real basketball superstar, and one of MN's finest sports figures, for sure. One that us L.A. Laker fans can't really lay claim to, of course. I'm glad that he and the rest of the MN Lakers got their proper due (as Laker legends) a couple years ago here in L.A. while he was still around though.

I trust you guys heard that Shaq's paying for his funeral. That's very generous and nice of him. Even if Shaq is a whiny little pee-hole. At least he's capable of showing some respect to the man who paved the way for him, so kudos to Shaq for that.

That is cool of Shaq, but why is he doing it? I mean aside from the respect angle. Is Mikan/family not able to afford it? That would be quite sad. :-\

That sounds like it's the case, actually. Perhaps they might've been able to barely afford it, but apparently neither he, nor his family, have much money at all anymore. Sad indeed. So Shaq pitching in to cover things is a huge relief for them, I'm sure, not to mention he'll probably get some fancier stuff in the process, which is nice.
Shaq may be a whiny brat nowadays, but I would never question his generosity. He's always been good about that, at least...

Looks like Pucket is in worse shape that was originally thought. I remember, although not a Twins fan, watching him play ball while I was growing up. Always thought he was a great player.
However, it looks as if not taking care of himself may have finally caught up to him, and at only 44 years old.

It was bad enough he had to retire at a young age. I pray he doesn't pass on at a young age. It's sad how he let himself go after his retirement.

Yeah, that is really sad news. Glad he got in the Hall of Fame as a first balloter a couple years ago so he could enjoy that.

As my hero (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=6400.msg102757#msg102757) growing up its like I just lost a family member.
Its sort of a hollow thing though because his recent trouble sort of tarnished his legacy, he sure was a helluva ball player though

This makes me sick, and I've been very worried about him the last few years due to his weight gain. He was my childhood hero growing up, and I even named my dogs, two Chows after him. He's still my favorite baseball player ever and I can't believe he's gone. I had all of his cards from 1984 Fleer Update (which I'll always cherish as a gift from my dad) through 1996 when he officially retired. Then I quit collecting baseball cards because without him playing I lost the interest.
God Bless you Kirby Puckett, and thank you for the memories.

Although is personal life in recent years was subject to some controversy, he was a great ballplayer and was one of the most popular of the 80-90's.

RIP Puck, the best Twins player ever. We wouldn't have had any World Championships without you. :'(
It sounded like he was depressed and he knew he wouldn't live to see 50 like his parents. What a shame. At least he is now at peace. Al Newman also ballooned up after retirement and had some health problems. I hope he steps back and takes a look at where he could be headed if he doesn't take care of himself.

Yeah I'm thinking some angry fan was probably bent out of shape over the pass protection of the Broncos defensive secondary ::)
Word is so far that there was an altercation in the club between some dudes and some of his friends that he may not have been involved in (so says Tatum Bell) and they hosed the whole limo with bullets.
UPDATE: WR Javon Walker was also inside the limo but was not wounded by any of the bullets.

That's been coming for a while. Apparently he was at one of the World Series games last year, but he barely knew where he was.
At least he's at peace now.

One of the best hitters in MLB history. 19 of his 20 seasons over .300 BA. .338 career average.
And one of my favorites as a kid (a kid who spent a lot of time stuck in right field when playing with the older kids in pickup games near my house). We'd make dream teams as kids and he was by default my pick for Right Field (with Kirby at Center and Rickey Henderson in Left).
