Title: K-Mart Legends Jodo Kast exclusive
Post by: JACKOFTRADZE on May 6, 2010, 12:20 PM
Courtesy of Sandtroopers.com:

We are getting a more up to date & adequate version of our favorite impostor exclusive to K-Mart of all places: link (http://www.sandtroopers.com/smf/index.php?topic=11691.msg257595#msg257595)

I am really happy to see this one, this is a nice surprise! I hope we see more of cool repaints exclusives like these.

This also confirms our rumor (http://www.yakfaceforums.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=88&t=5169) from back in January. I'm not really sure how to classify this as it's not an SL, Legacy, Vintage or CW figure.

It is amazing!
It will be $9.99 knowing their pricing. I actually would have no problem paying that, this is a nice exclusive!

Awesomeness - thanks for the pic!

Now I am happy I skipped the p.o.s. unarticulated version last year (I was starting to feel regret for not getting him) - however, I am not excited top include K-Mart in my hunt - my local store is terrible.

I dunno, considering the SL style packaging and the fact that SL will be at a cheaper MSRP that Vintage, I could see him cheaper than that.  I actually could see him at $6.99 and shipped in his own case similar to the Shipwreck/Doc TRU exclusives in the ROC line.  Man that would be sweet if there was a second exclusive figure!
Title: Re: K-Mart Legends Jodo Kast exclusive
Post by: Keonobi on May 6, 2010, 02:17 PM
I think that's a really good exclusive.  K-Mart will draw in the collectors who want one of everything, the collectors who focus only on Fett/Mandos, the kiddies will like it because of its relation to the mandos in the TV show (without really having to care who the character is).  I wonder who messed up at K-Mart and actually asked for a good exclusive instead of the exclusive repacks (now with a K-Mart sticker!) that they usually get.

Is this likely to be a Black Friday timed release?

Is this likely to be a Black Friday timed release?

If we are seeing pics now, it's more likely to be a "July Launch" timed release.

Also, he's not on a Legends card... he's on a Clone Wars card in that pic - remember: Clone Wars figures have a BLUE card top and name plate; Legends have an ORANGE card top and name plate.

It's hard to tell from the pic/angle, but it's entirely possible he's supposed to be a Clone Wars figure...

I'm not sure about it being a CW figure as it looks to recycle Tobbi Dala's sculpt (http://www.yakface.com/TGuide2004/ActionFigures/TLC/comicpacks/leia_tobidala/lf12.html) with a new head and it also has a special bubble without the game piece/card.  ???

Have you looked at KM prices lately? For a store that promotes itself to lower income families they are more expense than every store out there. I can see them fluffing the price either way I am happy to pay it. It's weird he is on a CW card when he is not animated. Maybe he will ship in CW cases instead of Legends.

Wow, K-Mart got a decent exclusive...  I never got the original figure because it used such an inferior sculpt, but I wanted a Jodo Kast...  Now, removable helmet and SA?  Count me in for one.  And thank god KM is actually a player in my area too.

Their prices are so-so...  Figures are a little more than WM when everyone's at full price.  KM is usually $1 more, sometimes less, as they all vary a little I've noticed.

One thing KM does that nobody but TRU does is BOGO sales though, and they do them at the right times for some reason.  I've gotten whole waves of the newest figures at their BOGO prices in the past, and that's always been great to me.  I'll never chew up K-Mart too much just because of that.  I don't make them a regular stop usually, but when they do sales like they do, I consider them as good as WM and Target.

Hell, they also were the only store to get some Legacy waves in around here for literally most of the line.  TPM wave didn't show anywhere but KM till just the last couple months.  Same with at least one other wave of Legacy around here.

Kmart seems to be consistently 10% more than "normal" retail where I've been hunting lately, but I'm more concerned about the general lack of Kmarts in general.  Unless it's going into Sears too or something.  I mean, it's not like the tins or the Clone 4-packs, this is actually interesting.  If it's less than ten bucks I'll be stunned.  Hopefully it won't be a gift-with-purchase, because that'd likely really *hurt.*

I'm not sure about it being a CW figure

I wasn't meaning that it was going to be a regular CW basic figure, just noting it has more in common with the CW card style than any of the others.  Maybe the cardback will clear up what it's supposed to be...

Either way, I'll repeat what others have said - Kudos to K-Mart for finally finding a reason for me to shop there in 2010.

Didn't Kmart have some GI JOE exclusives last year?  Some sort of 4 or 5 pack?  I don't recall that being overpriced, but I could be wrong.

It was 4 ROC figures for $26.95ish.  They also had that SW Clone set for the same price I believe.

This is really interesting.

Clearly the figure has been done in the realistic style.

The packaging though is the Clone Wars style packaging.

Very, very odd.

I wonder how they will be getting this figure...

There are three possible scenarios:

1) Solid cases of nothing but this figure
2) Mixed in with their Clone Wars cases
3) Mixed in with their Legends cases

Hopefully, it won't be options 2 or 3. If a store gets an entire case worth (12?) then at least there will be an easy shot at finding these.

I really do find it curious that Hasbro didn't give this to them on a Vintage replica card.

Well, that kind of pisses me off.  The only reason I bought the first POS figure was because I figured Hasbro would never bother to re-release him and with their new stance on no EU, I figured it was a safe bet.

******' Hasbro.  Now there's a semi-decent figure but I'm stuck with, and paid money for, that other lump.

I don't think it'll be 2 or 3, since this is an exclusive and I'm fairly sure they'll never mixed in exclusives with alongside general release figures in the same case.

There is speculation out there and we've touch on it here that this figure could be one of a few exclusives in a "Bounty Hunter Collection" subline. This theory is supported by a few facts:

- Unique bubble without game piece/card
- It's obviously not a animated figure and not a repack this rules out being a Clone Wars or Saga Legends
- There is no number on the insert (CWXX or SLXX)
- "Bounty Hunter" callout above Jodo's name on the insert
- The leaked Hasbro marketing plan at JTA showed a "Bounty Hunter Collection" promo that runs over several months after the relaunch
Title: Re: K-Mart Legends Jodo Kast exclusive
Post by: JACKOFTRADZE on May 6, 2010, 10:22 PM
Interesting theory.
Maybe that Bounty Hunter hunt is for Bounty Hunter figures:

-Boba Fett in vintage colors (Modern Sculpt) (TRU)
-White IG-88 (Wal-Mart)
-Jaster Mereel (Target)

The above is theoretical to Jayson's previous post. But it would be really cool if they had repaint/some new tooling on the chase figures if they indeed are chase figures.

I hope you're right Jayson - to my recollection they have only done this once - when WalMart got in the "Separation of the Twins" exclusives (the ones that were individually carded that came out right after the ROTS line ended, on The Saga Collection cardbacks) they came in trays that were a mix of the exclusive figures and the first wave of The Saga Collection.

If there is indeed a "Bounty Hunter Collection" - I sincerely hope that it's spread-out among a bunch of different stores and not just K-Mart.

I just hope they associate it to one of the traditional 3 lines: TCW, TLC or Legends.

I don't like the idea of nebulous figures floating around out there that don't belong to one of the established lines. Something about that just rankles the completist in me.

We have 3 K-Marts here locally, so on the off-chance this falls under the TCW line, I'll be all set.

Is this schmoe from a comic or video game?

I doubt he'll be in the CW line as he's not an animated sculpt.

Very, very odd.

Not really.

This figure isn't part of the Vintage Collection.  Only basic figures that are in the black and silver packaging are part of the Vintage Collection.  That means the carded figures on the Kenner style cards and the select vehicles that will be available in the black and silver packaging are part of the Vintage Collection.

Everything else falls under the SHADOW OF THE DARK SIDE umbrella.  Clone Wars, Legacy, everything.  Any movie style battle packs will be in the SHADOW OF THE DARK SIDE packaging.  The same goes for all vehicles except for those that are being offered exclusively in the black and silver packaging.

Plus he has zilch to do with the CW that I'm aware of, even in the EU stuff he is in...  I can't see it either.

I'm still in awe KM got something worth looking for.  The Jedi Temple Assault pack was the only thing I can think they ever had exclusively that was worth tracking down and that everyone was clamoring for.

Is that what Jodo Kast really looks like under the helmet? It seems like every Mandalorian figure we've gotten either looks like a pasty video gamer, or a big Fallout Boy fan. I'm starting to understand why the Mandalorians were wiped out...but the whole idea of them being "feared warriors" is flying out the window with each crappy headsculpt. Can't we just have one Mandalorian who's hideously scarred or at least looks tougher than the Jonas Brothers?

That's actually pretty close tot he portrayal of him in the comics.  They weren't all hideously scarred under there, but I agree that we should get a few mandalorians that look a little rougher next time they go with one of these guys.

According to Yakface's rumor this guy's due next month, which is not far off.  So maybe something to look for during the Summer afterall?  He's not even been officially announced yet though.  You'd think Hasbro would want to give you a heads up on it.

Either way a cool figure so I'm happy to pick him up, and extra happy I never got the DF figure.

I loved you post! It really bothered me how Emo they looked. The EE Mandos looked like a boy band. I am sure it was self indulgence of Hasbro or EE employees putting their likeness in there. Cannot blame them but scars and some scruff would go a long way.

I'd say that's a little harsh... several of them are Hasbro employees.  (And some are probably Hasbro employees I haven't yet met.)  But if you put my head on there it'd be a lot uglier.  And don't forget, scars are real easy to add to an otherwise pristine figure...

Well, just because they're employees doesn't mean they should have been sculpted as Mandalorians. That's kind of like when a director puts a family member (or significant other) in their movie in a role that completely doesn't suit them. You get the same type of groaning from that.
Title: Re: K-Mart Legends Jodo Kast exclusive
Post by: JACKOFTRADZE on May 24, 2010, 03:16 PM
Adam, do not get me wrong I loved theses sets, I am not being harsh just honest. I hope you do another set along those lines, even with boy band heads. While I liked the Joker Squad set it was too much of the same thing. The Mando sets were pure awesome and I loved every figure even the repaints. I was sad that you had no exclusives this year I have loved everyone you offered supporting them all. So I am a big fan of these.

With that said I work in the Toy industry as a Designer so I am just speaking from that angle and a fan angle. Even if I was lucky enough to get my head sculpt on a SW figure I would still scar it up. I have a Jason Strathom look so I already have a chromagnum brow and 5'oclock shadow with a shaved head. I would still take it a step further and make it look like I seen some battles. The heads do not do the bodies justice. When you remove them they just  look like an average 501st Convention goer and not battle worn warriors. The sculpts are nice just not Mando.

I am not questioning the integrity of the guys who these head sculpts are modeled after at all, I am sure they are cool guys. They just do not look like Mando warriors, that's all i am sayying. (The yellow chic is my favorite one.) I would have loved to see a Black Mando with a head sculpt like Heavy Duty and one with a claw scar across his face missing an eye. Still I was very happy with these!

So do you have an exclusive on tap for this year?
Not looking for specific hints just looking if you will have one.

<snip>
They just do not look like Mando warriors, that's all i am sayying.

I'd disagree, but only because Mando warriors aren't something we see a lot of.  I'll take "I don't like them" or "they didn't fit with my idea of what they should be," but we've seen very few unhelmeted Mandalorians on-screen.  (A one-off article in a magazine does not established continuity make.)  Jango Fett had practically pristine armor, and just a couple of minor scars-- which you really don't see when scaled down to a 3 3/4-inch action figure.  Meanwhile, Boba Fett looks like he got beaten with everything the galaxy had to throw at him.  And Pre Vizsla is pretty clean looking, including his face and armor.  (Since we see scars on Clones, this was likely not an oversight.)  So as on-screen appearances go, I wouldn't say the six Mandalorians in the EE exclusive packs don't fly in the face of most of the major film/video stories.

Heck, even Tobbi and Fenn were pretty boring looking.  Tobbi was a thin bald guy, and Fenn's hair is pretty non-warrior-like.  (In some of the Marvel SW comics, I'd almost say he looked more like a Ken doll.)  Hondo Karr had some pretty wacky hair in the comics, even though he's from a different era he's just another blond dude.

While we did see some nice drawings in that one Star Wars Insider article, well, I basically give the movies, TV, and comics (in that order) as taking precedent over magazine articles and novels.  But that's me.

The nature of "Mandalore" has been pretty inconsistent from the get-go.  Marvel had one take.  The 1990s Expanded Universe sorta had something else.  I thought I remember reading, around 2002, that the Mandalorians were basically wiped out and Jango (and Boba) were pretty much all that remained, or am I misremembering?  And then we saw all these drill sergeants, which I thought were these under-the-radar guys, and then it slowly started creeping out that there was a whole Mandalorian culture floating around out there around the time of that magazine article in the Star Wars Insider.  And then all of that got tweaked with The Clone Wars last season.

I guess there's just so much material out there on these guys that, whatever you'd like to make as a case for your view on them, you can probably do.  Since there were no pre-existing interpretations of these characters, I have no real beef with how they turned out because Dred Priest didn't conflict with any existing Dred Priest stuff I saw.   Also, if you want to get technical (and since I'm here anyway, why not), who's to say what they look like?  It used to be that your average office tech guy was thought of as having glasses, a white shirt, and a tie.  Now you're just as likely to see someone with piercings and tattoos and maybe crazy dyed hair.  The whole preppie thing seemed to invade hip hop for a few minutes, so Mandalorian culture-- like any culture-- seems to be filled with lots of unique individuals from diverse backgrounds who, apparently, look a lot like your average toy company employee.  Good on them for keeping their helmets on and not getting too beaten up, which I believe was something that came up as a "Rookie Mistake" on The Clone Wars TV show this season.

So yeah, Star Wars remains open to interpretation.  Hasbro's interpretation certainly fits within the confines of what Lucasfilm and its licensees have previously established over the past 3 decades but I totally get that it isn't necessarily quite what everybody would have expected.  And it's entirely possible we'll see a new interpretation of the warrior clan come the live-action TV series.

A great loose shot of the K-Mart Exclusive Jodo Kast figure turned up today...

Clicky to check him out!

He really looks cool, and I'm again really thankful I did NOT buy the BAD repaint of him.  At the time I was pretty frustrated with what they chose as a base figure, and it still sorta bites, and I never would've expected a re-issue with a different better base figure this soon.

It's not part of the CW line if that's what you are concerned about. It's more of a one-off thing possibly in a series of bounty hunter exclusives available starting in the fall.

possibly in a series of bounty hunter exclusives available starting in the fall.

Hasbro nixed the "Bounty Hunter" thing in the recent Q&A...  I don't recall where (Bantha Skull maybe? I can't check since they're blocked here at work), but Hasbro said something to the effect that they did have a Bounty Hunter exclusive program/sub-line type thing planned but they cancelled it making Jodo sort of a one-off figure.

Yep, BanthaSkull:

Quote
You are hunting in the right area, but now Jodo Kast is a stand-alone figure. Originally, the Bounty Hunter theme was to be much more pervasive throughout the line (there were numerous from around the EU, for example).
However, this was pulled back a little bit as it became clear that bounty hunters were one theme among many in the Clone Wars. While numerous EpV bounty hunter figures were slotted into the Saga Legends line, Jodo Kast was not put onto a Saga Legends cardback because he is unknown to kids, and as such became a one-off type of figure.

That's actually a smart move. I'm much more tempted to pick up a one-off than if he was on a Legends card.

Wonder if we will really see him in July before the relaunch hits?

I hope that Hasbro keeps up with making these "surprise" EU-type figures. It was quite surprising to hear that an all-new Jodo Kast was coming up again. Although I have thought about how some stores are getting their own exclusive characters:

K-Mart: Jodo Kast
Toys R Us: Kul Teska
Wal-Mart: Jabba the Hutt

Any chances Target gets its own exclusive figure? The last Target exclusive that I can remember is the Geonosis Arena sub-line.

I guess hasbro thought thaT last one sucked as much as the collectors seemed To, haha.

km is actually still fairly common in some areas.  especIaLly where target and wm haven't built a store every 5 miles.  not many of ours closed at all when they purged.

September 2008.  Since this likely will not hit until late July/early August, that's almost 2 years.  So it's close in a cosmic sense but 18 months is forever in this business.

So...very interesting to see Mr Kast displayed prominently with all the TCW exclusives. I know he's not technically part of the line but the packaging and proximity of the display to the other TCW stuff is all the convincing I need. I'm in.  ;D

WOOO HOOO.  Found Jodo Kast at my local K-Mart last night.  There were about 9 or so of them.  He was $8.99, which isn't bad because figures at regularly $8.49 or so at that store.

I didn't open him yet, I had to wrap birthday presents last night...

Interesting that there's nothing packed inside the bubble, as in no advertisements for other figures etc.  He comes with his helmet, jetpack, etc.

Happy hunting!

Nice score!  Can you post the UPC when you have a chance or PM me with it?  My Kmart will probably let it sit in the stock room for a year.

I hit Kmart this evening and found the exclusive Jod Kast along with the 4-pack of repack clones.  Passed on the repack, but I scooped up the 4 Jod Kasts they had left.  $8.99 isn't too awful, though its been a long time since I paid that for a basic figure with all the TRU sales.

Not sure which digits is technically the UPC (hides face in shame), so here's what the bottom of the figure says:

6   (lines extend down from barcode)  53569  (more lines) 50374  (lines) 3

Does that mean its 6 53569 50374 3  ? :-[

Good figure though, and an exclusive under $10's a surprise.

If anyone is interested, Banthaskull.com is holding a neat contest where you can win a FREE Jodo Kast. I think people don't utilize them enough...  They're a little more than everywhere else, but figures are $8.50...  That's not that much more if you're really strapped to find something.  KM around here almost always gets in waves other stores don't for some reason too.  I find it very odd how they almost always seem to be on that stuff that just is impossible to find at WM or Target for me.

The only time I really ever buy in bulk though is when they do BOGO50% off sales, which they always seem to do at the exactly right moment.  I stocked up on ANH wave figures from this past year for instance.  They had other cool stuff in for the same sale earlier in the year.  Lots of army builders.  I really have dropped a lot of coin at KM then because of those sales.

I buy at Target and WM of course, and they're a better price always, but I never completely dismiss K-Mart.  They're still common up this way, moreso than WM and Target even for the most part, so I keep them on the list.

I even noticed their mid-size vehicles are cheaper than WM and Target...  by a lot.   :o  And not clearance...  Weird stuff.

They haven't had a aworthy exxclusive since the 501st Legion battlepack in the ROTS days though.

Is that because going to K-Mart is depressing or its nearly impossible to find anytihng in the Toy section?   I'm thinking their stocking method is to shoot items out of one of those t-shirt guns randomly into the toy area...

I'm not sure about the K-Marts near you guys, but the only one remotely close to me is a pile.  They never have new figs and the ones they do have are at least $1 or more than Target/Walmart/TRU prices.  Prices may be better nowadays, but I remember finding a mid-size ship I wanted there last year and it was $35.  TEN BUCKS more than what you find at Target (or $15 this week) is ridiculous and that's what makes me not want to ever shop there.

I heard that K-Mart is planning on refocusing their attention to collectors and Star Wars in particular and want to offer up more (and better) exclusives than they have in the past. Sounds promising, but I wonder if they'll still come at a price when compared to other retailers. If so, it may be for naught.

To be fair, you guys live in the land of Target right?  Haven't they all but beaten down a lot of the competition in that area, or is it at least even with WM mostly?  ;)  I picture driving into MN and it's nothing but red dots along the freeway, one visible from the next's parking lot, haha.

Around me and in the NE in general, KM is still a larger company which often covers areas that don't have WM or Target (much less TRU) that are 15 minutes from one another all over...  Some of our areas have gotten similar to that, but they're few compared to other parts of the country.

So KM here is hit and miss in terms of quality...  For me, I live 45 mins or so NE of Pittsburgh, which is a pretty rural area, and KM is all there is here.  I have 2 KM's before I have any other large retailer to shop at.  Nearest WM to me is 25 or 30 minutes (2 within that distance in 2 directions).  The nearest Target for me is at least a half hour.  Most are at least 45 mins in various directions.

TRU is about the same, and they're only around malls.

So my KM is ok...  It's not great, it's not as nice as Target or even WM (which I have a few WM's I visit that are pretty new/nice).  But it's around, so I shop there.

They have figures priced at $8.50 here about...  $8.49 I believe, which puts them about $.50 more than most retailers.  Also KM is the ONLY store other than TRU that runs any kind of BOGO sale, which is always a value then.  I got the entire TPM wave, which is IMPOSSIBLE to find here at any retailer except KM, on sale for BOGO...  They put out brand new waves every time they run one of those sales too.  They don't  just use it to clear up stuff that's been there for months.

I stocked up bigtime last year, at least twice, on their sales.  I got ROTJ wave in bulk, I got a bunch of ANH wave when it was brand new, and for BOGO, and I got that TPM wave I recall.

Right now their mid-size vehicles are $21.99...  That's a ****load cheaper than other stores.  Their deluxe fig/vehicle like is $16.99 I think (I don't know what its normal price is though  since I rarely buy it).  And the Jodo Kast figure was $8.99 for me...  I was ecstatic to get an exclusive fig for that low a price at a any store.

Their AT-AT is $99.99 too...  I haven't seen their Vintage and SotDS packaging basic figures out yet though, to compare those prices.   :-\

I've found KM is best when they have stuff on sale though...  This is just a general shopping POV I mean.  Candy, or paper, or whatever, is best when it's on sale.

Oh, and KM now has a rewards card where you earn money back on purchases as well...  So if you were to buy  there much, you're earning something back too, which is nice, and it accumulates for a year.  It also works at Sears too, and if you use Craftsman tools that's a nice plus.

K-Mart has its place then, at least to me...  But I've been in KM's which have hung on in areas where there isn't likely to be more construction/development, and KM's all there is, and theyr'e a real hole...  The area they're in probably has a lot more to do with that though.

Mine's clean and stuff...  The employees are as helpful as any other retailer.

I'd not heard what Jayson mentioned, but that's interesting.  I'm all in on that then...  I'd love more quality exclusives to K-Mart stores.  Their Clone 4-packs aren't exactly inspiring me with hope for that though.

I saw a case of the new Vintage stuff last night at K-Mart for the first time Jesse, they were priced at $8.49 each. That puts them right in between Target and TRU...no idea about Walmart as all the ones around here have yet to fully reset.
Title: Re: K-Mart Legends Jodo Kast exclusive

That's what I was figuring they'd be since that's what Legacy/CW was at.  I'm wondering (doubting) they'll price CW/Legends $1 though...  Be nice if they did, but I just doubt it.

At $8.49 though, that's not bad considering Target is $7.99...  $.50 adds up fast, but if they're a brand new wave and you're not buying extras, it's excusable to cave at KM sometimes...  I try to go where it's cheapest out of principle though.  Now when KM runs a sale though, I try to clean house.

Took a short road trip to a previously unvisited K-Mart in Chester, VA. Zowie - nicest K-Mart I have ever stepped foot into...clean, well lit, nicely organized. Quite a shock.

Anyway, they were ahead of the curve compared to every other K-Mart around here. I finally picked up my Jodo Kast, along with the Commando Squad exclusive.

It's a pretty sweet figure. Glad to have this off my list.

I took a short trip over to Anaheim K-Mart. After about ten minutes of digging thru the toy section I found a Jodo Kast behind some GI Joe vehicles for $8.99. (same price as all their other figures including some left over Bail Organas). This place was barely a step above a thrift store. Stank like one too. If I ran the Hasbro I wouldn't give exclusives to any store with a Mart in its name.

After making such a big deal (or decent-amount deal) about this exclusive, I doubt Hasbro would only ship 1 case per store. But then again, maybe they're uncertain how an obscure/EU/minor character like this would perform at retail?

Or then again maybe they just gave up on K-Mart.
Title: Re: K-Mart Legends Jodo Kast exclusive
Post by: Jesse James on September 1, 2010, 10:40 PM
I didn't really see it as being a "big deal" made about the figure though either...  It's just an exclusive figure, and the ball's in KM's court as to which stores get it or don't, and how much.  Hasbro just fills the orders if they're requested.  By what I've seen locally, all stores I've visited seemed to get the same ammount and I've not seen replenishment on any of my ventures.
