Title: Black Series 6" Archive Re-Releases
Post by: Jeff on July 20, 2018, 05:14 PM
Rumors are true, Hasbro is going to start re-releasing popular, in-demand characters so new collecotrs don't have to sell their car to catch up.

Name of the Line is The Black Series Archive.  First up - Boba Fett, Bossk, IG-88, and X-Wing Luke (with photo real face deco).  Great news for anyone who decides they want the 6" ESB Bounty Hunters.

The new paint apps on humanoid faces makes these reissues a little interesting.  Most of all, I'm glad to see Hasbro recognizing that some of the characters have been in demand for a while and need to get recirculated.  Because eBay prices on some characters, like ROTS Anakin Skywalker, have just gotten insane.

Listening the the JD interview at SDCC I realized these are going to be blister carded and not boxed.   That got me worried.

Does anyone know how these are going to make it to retail?  Are they going to mixed in with new releases, or is there going to be a whole separate Archive line taking its own dedicated pegs?

At first I was cool with them mixing these figures in to assortments (and skipping more Kylo Rens, more Jyns, etc.), but now if they're going to have their own pegs it makes me worried that is just going to exacerbate the problem of bad assortments.

Also, does anyone know if they're going to keep their seemingly stale lines like Die Cast Figures and Centerpiece going?  Seems like a lot of dust on those at my local Targets and its frustrating when peg space seems to be shrinking for the core stuff I'm trying to locate.

Off topic but related to one of Dave's points. My local Target has done the new toy set with a remodel. The action figure aisles are, I'd estimate, two feet less tall than they were. Far less peg space. That scares me a bit

That was the store I hit today Nick and the pucker factor kicked in:
- one peg for Vintage
- 2 pegs for TLJ (clearance this crap already) 3.75"
- 2 pegs for Solo 3.75"
- 1 peg for Gam Guard 6"
- 1 peg for Chewie 6"
- 2 pegs for regular 6"

I'm hoping that limited shelf space doesn't last long, but they're going to have to get rid of some other junk (die cast, etc.) to make room.

Black Series Archive is its own line of carded 6" figures (you can see early carded mock-up in pic above).  Separate from the main Black Series 6" boxed stuff.  It should have unique pegs and it's own case assortments.

Lemme tack on as an aside that I really want the Kylo centerpiece because I think it’ll look good with 4” figures as a diorama Base. 🤷‍♂️

Fantastic to see Anakin getting a re-release...  I missed out on that one and, well, with the upcoming Padme figure, it’s needed!  But I hope these re-releases don’t diminish the value of existing figures.  I got complete sets of somemof the first waves and have been pleased to see how well they held their value.

It''l be interesting.  These will have a different style of packaging (archive series is carded), so the old boxed ones will hold value to those trying to complete a boxed set.  '

But for loose?  These will have superior paint aps (using the new photo real deco process) so I could see people who are collecting loose being happy with the new versions.  May even see the number of loose figures for sale go up as folks buy the new better versions and sell off the older versions of Anakin and Yoda.

Great choice to release the Biker Scout without the Speeder Bike. I've seen lots of people who army build the 6 inch figures, and they only have one or two Bikers since you could only get it with the Speeder Bike (and the lowest price that set got around here was $20, and in limited quantities).

I've really wondered why it took so long for Hasbro to start rereleasing the 6 inch figures.

I would like to see confirmation which of these are different from the originals, and even if there are any subtle differences in the ones that are supposed to be straight repacks. Luke and Anakin both have the new face printing right? And I seem to recall Yoda was an upgrade somehow?

Mostly curious about Bossk and Boba and the Speeder scout I guess.

I found these at Target this week (aside from Bossk). I wanted the Luke because of the face deco changes (although this is one I didn't think was too bad in the previous version), and ended up picking up another Boba Fett for sone reason. I already had one, but kinda wanted an extra for the desk. Originally thought about Bossk too, but didn't see him. IG-88 looked like the deco was different to me as well.

I decided to sell my originals of these characters and buy the Archive versions.  My set of 4 already arrived from Dorksidetoys yesterday.  I like the new paint apps better and I'm not so attached to the original releases that it was that big of a deal.

I was kind of surprised by how quickly almost all of the originals sold, even though EVERYBODY seems to have known about the Archive releases.  Selling two of those more than covered the cost of the Archive wave.  And the only one I have left is Boba Fett, and it's kind of a surprise that he's the last man standing.

Looking through my Black Series figures and it got me to thinking what. Figures would be nice to see get another release in this line? Honestly, after seeing some of these newer real scan face figures, it makes some of the older versions look fairly outdated. With that in mind, I'd personally like to see several of the Luke Skywalker figures get a redo with the new faces. Bespin and Jedi Luke in particular. We have a new version of Stormie Luke on the way. Tattooine and Hoth Luke could use this as well. Hasbro has been great at putting out versions of Luke in this line, but after seeing figures like Bespin Han Solo, Bespin Leia, Skiff Guard Lando, Val, Tarkin, and others....id really like to see updates to most/all of the previous human figures. Not that they were all awful, but the new face deco techniques has really changed the game.

I feel very much the same as Brian.  The more I see the new facial deco, the more I'm open to improving some of the older figures.  Especially having seen the updated deco on the ROTS Anakin Skywalker, because the difference is astounding!  The ones that I would like to see at this point in time?

-Luke Skywalker (Bespin, Farmboy versions)
-Obi-Wan Kenobi (ROTS)
-Han Solo (TFA)
-Kylo Ren (either unmasked version)
-Rey (TFA)
-Poe Dameron (any of them)
-Emporer Palpatine

I'm also wondering how this technique might be applied on a figure like Chewbacca.  It might be able to add a level of detail to Chewie that we've never seen.

Excellent choices, I totally forgot to specifically mention Poe. That original pilot version is one of the worst looking heads we have had, definitely need a redo there. I would agree about Chewie as well. I think the Solo version is far superior to the previous Chewies, it would be nice to see a new/improved OT version.

Yeah, pretty much every Poe Dameron release so far has been lackluster in terms of the likeness.  The TLJ version isn't that great, either.

I managed to decipher the "50" in the upper corner of the packaging.  2021 will mark 50 years since the formation of Lucasfilm as a company.

The character selections for the upcoming wave are decent.  We knew that Commander Cody was going to get reissued.  And now we can get a cleaner Hoth Luke Skywalker and Han Solo with the brown coat.  But I'm blanking on the 4th figure in the wave.

The re-release of Thrawn seems much more loaded in light of what Ahsoka said in Chapter 13 of The Mandalorian.  Could Thrawn finally be coming to live action?

Jayson also seems to be rumoring as many as 3 waves of Black Series Archive figures for 2021.  Wave 1 already got announced.  And I thought I saw a cryptic message that people shouldn't be paying inflated secondary market prices for the Tusken Raider after the season 2 premiere of The Mandalorian.  It makes me wonder if one of the figures in the Archive line will be a Tusken.

It's a very solid lineup.  I'm very glad to see the standard version of the Shoretrooper here because that figure was difficult to come by when it was a Walmart exclusive.  And I'm definitely glad to see the Tusken Raider return.  That figure seemed to come and go very quickly.  And with the prevalence of the Tuskens in The Mandalorian I'm glad to see this figure back in circulation.

This wave seems remarkable because we're getting two figures that had previously been retail exclusives.  It seems like that had been more of an obstacle in the past.  But seeing how we're 5 years past the release of Rogue One, maybe we're outside of the contractual window.  That, and Toys R Us as it was, no longer exists.

Next Black Series Archive Wave was pipeline revealed at today's live-stream:
- Emperor Palpatine
- Skiff Guard Lando
- ANH C-3PO
- Dengar

We will probably see more info on these at Pulse Con in October.

Most of these are decent choices.  That Palpatine figure originally came out in 2015.  And Dengar has become a really HTF figure on the secondary market.  Not so sure about Lando.  And with this ANH version of C-3PO, how much will it really get updated?

The photo real deco is one of the big selling points in whether I buy these or not.  I think I might just wait on all of these though - they're not a high priority with tomorrow's pre-order bonanza.

The 2019 release is definitely better, but it also came with the throne, alternate heads and hands, etc.  I'm going to have to re-watch the livestream to clarify some of these points.

Some good choices for sure. I missed out on Skiff Lando (that wave never made it to even the collectors stores here), so that's a definite buy for me. With 3PO, I'd guess they'll release the updated one from the Disney packs, the one that uses the 4-LOM articulated body (which would be an upgrade from the original 3PO).

Some of the Wave 3 Archive figures have started to resurface around here this week at Walmart. I saw 2-3 cases at one this morning and managed to get minty cards of all 4 new ones I needed, including the elusive Clone Trooper. They rang up at $19.97 each too. Glad I held off on ordering these all online now!

I was able to pick up a couple of TBS Archive 501st Clones at a local shop a couple of weeks ago.  When I saw those the shop was putting out a couple of cases, including the Darth Revan, Leia and Obi-Wan reissues.  I passed on those - I don't need another Revan.  I'm bargain hunting for the Leia.  And my Hasbro Pulse order for this Archive wave includes 2 x 501st Clones and 1 x Obi-Wan.

Where to begin with Obi-Wan, though?  The paint apps on the one I saw were much improved over the original released.  But between the Walgreens exclusive Clone Commander Obi-Wan, and the Target exclusive Clone Wars Obi-Wan, both of those figures have far superior head sculpts.  The one thing about this TBS Archive Obi-Wan is that the face paint looked shiny.  It was weird, and almost made me start thinking that it would need to matte spray to make it look a bit more normal.

....anyhow

Hasbro Pulse hit my card this morning for the TBS Archive 501st Clone and Obi-Wan.

Cody has been going up for sale on Amazon and quickly selling out the last few days. I was able to grab one this morning. Good to finally get my hands on that one after Target refused to sell it to me last year.
