Title: Your commute... How bad does it suck?
Post by: JediMAC on September 3, 2003, 03:59 PM
Well, we're finally officially moved into our new place and out of our old one, so I am finally commuting for the first time in my life (I lived just one mile from my office for the past 5+ years).

Patty and I made the drive back and forth between our old and new places probably about 25 times over the past 3 weeks and never hit a bit of traffic, which made the 20 mile drive just a measely 20-25 minutes - which is somewhat tolerable.  I figured I'd be in pretty good shape for my commute to and from the office, especially since I usually come in pretty late (9:30-10am) and leave after 7pm, so I figured I'd be avoiding the majority of the "rush hour" traffic.

Well, if yesterday and today are any indication of my average commute, I'm going to be looking for a new job pretty soon!   >:(   Took me a good 35 minutes yesterday to get into the office.  Started off smoothly for the first 15 miles, and then nothing but a parking lot on the freeway for the last 5 miles.  But today was twice as bad, as it took me over an hour to get in - 10 miles of pure gridlock!

I even hopped off the freeway at one point this morning to take side streets the rest of the way, but apparently thousands of other people had the same damned idea.  This royally SUCKS.  I HATE traffic (especially in 90+ degrees of heat) and idiotic drivers, so arriving at the office in a vengeful and angry mood, with a nice fat headache to go with it, is not going to be a good thing.  Not to mention all of the road rage spewing forth from my filthy mouth, and vulgar fingers...

Hopefully things will get better though, 'cause I just can't handle it as is!   >:(  God help me...

So what's everyone else's commutes to work or school like?

20 miles in 35 minutes, Matt?  Damn it takes me 30 minutes to go approximately 9 miles to and fro work.  And this is leaving home at 6 - 6:15 am and leaving work most days at 3:45.

But I'm like you, I loathe traffic.  Can't stand it, can't tolerate it and sometimes wish I had a tank to plow through every one.

And don't get me started on stupid drivers.  I'm in a pretty good mood and don't feel like raising my blood pressure  ;)

5 miles from work, takes around 7 minutes.  My wife used to drive from our townhome for an hour...we moved 10 miles south (I had about the same drive before as I do now) and she only has to drive 30 minutes, so it was a good compromise.

Well with me being on night shift, I avoid all the traffic.  ;D

My drive to work is only 11 kilometers or 6.85 miles. Takes me 11 mins ethier way.  :-*

Nope, don't miss day shift at all.  8)

I have a commute where Pittsburgh-ers look at me with both shock and horror at the distance I travel.  The ironic thing is that it's really not all that  bad (Or it could be worse I guess).

I drive from my home for 45 minutes, about 39 miles, to my campus which is about 10 or 15 minutes north of Pittsburgh on Mcknight(mare) road.

I travel down Route 28, which has a portion called the "Death Stretch", but fortunately I don't hit the stuff DEEP in the city.  I'm able to exit at PA route 8 and take it North then skip through a community to the back entrance of my school.  Not too shabby really, for these parts.

Where I live though is WAY out in the sticks...  39 miles is a hefty distance away from the city.  The nice thing about Pittsburgh though is that our city is on the medium side, and we don't have the issues that cities like LA, San Fran, NY, Chi, Detroid, Philly and others have...  And the Baltimore/DC/Beltway area is the biggest Freakin' mess I've ever been in myself and puts all the others to shame.

The drive I do is pretty steady driving though with little bumper-to-bumper so it goes by faster in my mind.  When you're sitting there it changes things entirely.

This weekend I want to go to the city, deep into it like near downtown and such, and unfortunately it's the annual Irish Festival where I want to be and that damned thing backs EVERYTHING up to gridlock down in the city.  I'm not looking forward to just going out for a couple nights!  Blah.

We've discussed our traffic woes before Matt, I sympathize with your current situation and hope it improves...  Commutes blow, plain and simple.

I usually have a pretty peacefull drive in. I live about 22 miles from work but I live in a rural area and my job is at the edge of the city so i don't deal with to much city traffic. so for me I like the drive in. I get to listen to the radio and relax a bit. On the otherhand winter driving can be a pain but overall its not to bad.

You're right Mike.  All things considered, 30-40 minutes isn't really too bad - especially here in L.A.  I'm just speaking relative to what I had before, and also relative to what my tolerance for traffic is.  If I ain't goin' at least 60mph, I'm not too happy!  Unfortunately, in the midst of my stress and road rage, I'm unable to keep in mind that compared to some others, this isn't all that bad...  I'm mostly just focused on how irate I get being parked on a freeway at any point in time...   ;)

BTW, gas prices averaging around $2.20 a gallon here in L.A. definitely isn't helping matters...   >:(

When I go to classes, I have (speaking speed limit-wise) a 50 minute (each way) drive. I cut it down to 30 today! :)

When I teach, it's about a 20 minute drive, but I can cut that one down to about 15

I've praised the day I stopped working in Manhattan.  That commute was terrible!  Even working off hours (6AM - 2PM), I had at least a 2 hour roundtrip commute.  And that was when it was fast!

Now, it takes me about half an hour.  Thankfully, I tend to work off hours, so it helps.  But working in Jersey as opposed to NYC has really helped my sanity level.  I feel much better now!

Rush hour in T.O. lasts from 7am to 8pm Monday to Friday.  Thank God I work long, long hours so I usually only have to drive in "prime time" one way.

I have about 30 miles and it takes me about 45 min to an hour in Chicago traffic in the morning.  On the way home is a different story.  It can take anywhere from an hour to whatever!  The longest it took me to go that 30 miles was 3 hours in a snowstorm.

I honestly don't mind the drive - I love where I live.  Maybe someday I will be closer but the houses that are closer to the town I work in are minimum $400,000.

It takes me about 10-15 minutes to drive to the train station, about an hour on the train to downtown Chicago, and then about 15-20 minutes to the building where I work.  It's a long haul to the office, let me tell you.

At one of my first jobs coming out of college, my drive took anywhere between 1 hour and 1.5 hours to get to work.  That sucked.

Matt, 35 minutes would be so nice to endure.  Welcome to the commuting world.   :(

Well, when the government decentralized my job, my commute went from 12 kilometers to 92.  Very nearly 60 miles, with 80% of it on a two lane highway, the majority of the remainder on the local perimeter highway which is crowded with a bunch of clowns that don't realize the left lane is for passing/faster traffic.   ::)

My commute is basically one hour each way.  Longest it's taken in winter is 2 1/2 hours in a blizzard.  If I don't go to work in a blizzard, I have to take a vacation day >:( >:( >:(  Nice respect for safety the government has.

I put about 30-35,000 miles a year on my car.  It is very well maintained and has next to zero resale value already.  It is a 1998 :'(

Aside from commuting, my job requires me to drive all around the province, so I probably drive about 50,000 miles a year.

I used to love driving for something to do.  Get in the car, go for a cruise, crank the tunes.  Not any more :-\

40 min here.  Rural to the edge of the city.  I used to work right downtown, which I hated.

Traffic, expensive parking etc. etc.

Now it is much better.  I actually enjoy my drive as it lets me unwind a lot before I get home.

All my work anger is lost on loud music along to road!

I have lived in various parts of Seattle over the years, and was subjected to the 2nd worst commute in the world (second only to a certain part of LA according to some news report I saw some time).

Its' this 13 mile stretch from the East Side over a bridge to the West Side. If I wanted to work 8 or 9 to 5 or 6.....I had 40 mins each way on a good day, and up to 2 hours on a bad day.  The record though....was one day when it took me just over 3 hours to get across that bridge. I think it was a Mariner's game and Sonic's game on the same night, and I was trying to leave work at 4:30.  OH MAN.

Anyway...that royally sucked, so I bought a house on the East Side. I now live within biking distance of my job, and I can get to and from work within 15 minutes on a bad day.

But....I'm finding myself missing the city sometimes, and I kind of want to move back over there......

Uh oh.

I agree with Josh.  Seattle sucks for driving.  I was down there last year to visit a friend and had to go from the Canadian border to a neighbourhood on the south side at the same time as folks were going to a Mariners game :o

Holy crap, does I-5 ever suck.  Huge.  Then we had to turn around and go back for the rest of the game.

Great assortment of toy stores in that area though.  Lots of Target, TRU and Wally's.  Found a few KB's in the malls too.

The one good thing about living in a small city is that there is rarely gridlock. When (if ever) I get to L.A., I'm selling my Hyundai because I don't think I'd handle the traffic all that well.
Title: Re: Your commute... How bad does it suck?
Post by: JoshEEE on September 5, 2003, 11:41 AM
Yeah. But sometimes they have what they think is traffic.

When I first moved from CA to WA, I used to live in a small town, and every summer, there would be a little bit of of a backup on the main roads as tourists used it both as a highway, and a stop on their way to the Olympic National Park.

You'd actually have slow down a little as you went down the main drag, and SOME days it required more than 5 minutes to get to where you were going.

They called it "traffic".

I can feel the hate that's gonna be coming my way in about 5 minutes.  My "commute" to work consists of a block of walking down a back alley, across the main street of town, and up the street about half a block.  Then I'm at my work shop.  It's pretty nice being able to walk to and from work for lunch in a shorter amount of time than it takes most people to get to the nearest McDonalds or whatever.

I get up at 7AM, shower, shave, eat, watch a little TV, walk to work by 8AM.

Not bad, eh?

Bring on the HATE mail!!! ;D

Hey, I can get up at 8am and be at work by 9am too. It's just that I don't have time for all that "TV" and "Breakfast" stuff that you do.

I have to do all that when I get here.

Well, that was long ago, and my bosses have recently changed the "arrival time policy", so I have to be in at 9am sharp now, instead of sometime between 9:30 and 10am.  That's added an average of 30-40 more minutes to my previous commute, so nowadays, making it into the office within an hour is great.   >:(  It usually takes me an hour to an hour and a half in BOTH directions now, and we're only talking about a 20 mile distance here.  (you do the math)

This is absolutely sickening, and I pretty much start and finish every day be wanting to shoot myself (and many other drivers).  Keep in mind that before we moved, my commute was about 5 minutes, just up the street.  I'm definitely considering job searching closer to our new home now, 'cause I can't deal with this any longer.  I'm teetering on the brink of going completely insane, and possibly homicidal as well.  The filth that comes out of my mouth, and from my fingers, every day is probably enough to last the average angry teenager a solid year.

Oh, and by the way, when they recently announced the worst freeway bottlenecks last month in the news, the 101/405 interchange here in L.A. ranked as the worst one in the country.  That's exactly what I drive straight into every single day, as my office is located immediately beside that interchange (like 50 feet away from it).  Here's the disgusting confirmation of that from CNN (scroll down to Study: Worst U.S. bottleneck is in Los Angeles)

Bull sh!t.

While the Big Dig has helped a little, there is still traffic.  Hopefully soon this will all change for me.  I might possibly have another job offer coming and if I take it, I'll be driving in the opposite direction of traffic both to and fro.  Mile wise it's longer than I have now, but time wise, its probably about the same or less.

Sheesh.  Not you too now, Mikey!   >:(   ;)

Yeah, that's actually not too far from being accurate at this point, except that I don't go into too many Korean stores really.  Wait, actually now that I think of it, the shop downstairs in our office building here is run by Koreans, and I actually gave the owner a good piece of my mind when he charged me almost a buck for a small 5-stick pack of gum last year.  I even threw in some Korean too, which surprised the hell out of him that I spoke the language.  Boy, I am headed down the wrong path.  Maybe I should go watch that movie again, and look for some tell tale signs of things I should be avoiding...   :-\  Anyone know a good shrink in the L.A. area?

Also, I FINALLY saw "Office Space" the other night, and I gotta tell you - I was crying from laughter during the introductory scene where the dude's commuting 1 mile per hour and getting passed by the old man with the walker, and getting all crazy road rage goin' on.  That is SO me!  I had even called Patty several times on my way home from work earlier that night, screaming and yelling about "just sitting there" in traffic and not moving for 10 minutes at a time.  When I finally got home, I ranted for another 15 minutes 'cause I was still so pissed that it took 93 minutes to drive 20 miles.  And then we turned on Office Space...  Too damned funny!

I've got about a 25-mile commute to work each day on northbound 101. If I left the house at about 5:30 am or earlier, I can drive to work in about 30 minutes--with fairly heavy, but swiftly moving traffic. However, this means that I would leave work at about 3 or 3:30 pm, and southbound 101 at that time is not good, as it would take at least an hour (probably 1 & 1/2). This is not good at all, since my sanity would be severely affected. ;) So, I take the train to and from work. I leave the house at about 5:45 am, and arrive at work at about 6:35. Then, I leave work in the afternoon at about 3:20, and get home at about 4:15. No, not much difference in time spent traveling, but my sanity is definitely still there, which really does make all the difference. Not to mention the savings on gas, the environment, and wear and tear on the vehicle. ;)

Yeah, the Bay Area's not much better than L.A. Bob.  I've considered taking a shuttle bus that goes from my city, right to the front door of my office.  The bus can actually use the usually empty carpool lane, so it only takes about 35 minutes.  The only two problems are that it arrives here at 9:15, which is 15 minutes too late for my boss, and it also costs about $200 a month, which I'm not too excited about tacking onto my monthly budget...   :-\

Yeah, Matt, the cost of public transportation is the biggest downside. I'm pretty lucky in that my company actually subsidizes the full cost of my monthly train ticket (up to $100), AND the train stops are close to both my home and my work. I still wish I could work from home, though, because some of these train patrons obviously come from homes without running water (why else would they smell like that?)  ;)

About 12 feet from my bed. I work out of my home. I still have to take my kid to school, though. Since he goes to a private school, it's not in the neighborhood, so I spend 30 minutes in the car round trip but it's all against the traffic, so no traffic jams.

With my new job my commute is about 1 hour (50 mins on the Metrolink about 10 on the bus) each way.  Since I take the train I'm not stressed out worrying about drivers and traffic at least.  The only problems that I have had with it are suicide and some rail work which have caused some delays.

I can't fathom commuting a long distance to work.  Maybe if I live somewhere with a subway or something that I could ride so I could at least read a book and not get stuck in traffic while I travel.

My commute is kind of long, but it's not too bad.  I live in Ft Collins, Colorado but the base to where I'm assigned is up in Cheyenne, Wyoming.  It takes me about 45 minutes to get to work in the morning, but I kind of like the time because it allows me to prepare myself for whatever I have to that day.  It's also nice going in home because I get all the cussing and screaming from my frustrating assignment out of my system before I get home.

Seems like we have the same sort of drive Matt.  Mine's about the same length as that now, down from an hour after we moved.  But on mornings like this it really sucks.  It's been snowing all weekend and the roads are just **** right now.  Heavy wet snow on the sides that pull you right in if you drift over and the main part of it is covered in snow/ice meaning maybe 45 mph tops, stretching that 45 minutes into more like 70.  Of course the morons driving in the blowing snow with no headlights don't help either >:(

I just moved so the 1 hr commute has been downgraded to 30 mins. I'm still training in this office til mine opens up and that new office will be 5 minutes from my house. And even better, it's right in front of a Target.  ;D

I've never had any commute worth mentioning.

When I taught high school, I lived less than two miles from my school.  I've had two jobs where I lived on the campus where I worked, so my office was either attached to my apartment or just a building over.  The furthest I've lived from work was 5 miles.  Now I live 3 miles away.

I have an hour drive..one way.

No traffic at all, but it's still a waste of time, gas and money.

I think it's time I found a new job even though I like my current one.

How rooted are you in your community?

I'd personally probably rather move if I liked my job - but of course there are all kinds of circumstances that factor into something like that...

Heh, I'm not rooted to my community that much, but a move is unlikely.  My employer moved me to that drive.  I used to work on the same campus as my wife until we were decentralized and moved away from the city.  Thankfully it's not too far, but it is that waste of time, gas, money, natural resources, etc.  And thanks to politics, I can't transfer back into the city.  So we either move out here, stay where we are or go in between.  We looked at it and moved across the city to reduce the drive for me (there were other benefits to the move as well) but there wasn't much point in moving out to the country or halfway.  No sense in both of us commuting long distances (we live about 7 minutes drive from my wife's work) and risking being on ****** highways in the winter.  So I drive, my government thinks nothing of it and crows about how pro-Kyoto they are ::)

Not very.

My wife likes her job too (and is paid very well for her industry).  She only has a 10 minute drive, but she has to drop the kids off at day care on the way to work.

Yeah, we could move somewhere in the middle, but that really doesn't save anything in regards to money -- we're just splitting the difference vs. one person taking one for the family!

That and I really don't want her on the roads with the kids in the Midwest weather.

I almost lost my mother in a car wreck (the day after my first was born) so I'm kind of weird about my family driving...

My commute situation has changed a bit, too. Though I'm still at the same company, our office has moved to a different building in the same city. As a result, taking the train isn't viable anymore. The new office is much farther from the train station, so I'd either have to bike or take a shuttle from the train station to work. The streets are totally not bike friendly and the shuttles are only on the hour, so those solutions don't work. So, I now drive to work. Luckily, the drive to work at 4:30-5 am is pretty smooth, so it only takes about 30 minutes. The drive home in the afternoon takes about 45 minutes.

I'd love to live closer to work or work closer to home, but moving to where I work would take a much larger paycheck than I get. And moving to a different job would entail a company actually looking for and willing to hire someone with my "skills." Or, in a best-case scenario, forcing me to work 80-hour weeks.

However, I'm trying really hard to get a research/analysis position within my current company, which will definitely help monetarily, so everyone, please keep your fingers crossed. This'll make the commute all the easier to stomache.

Except when I'm at home actually sleeping I swear I spend more time sitting in my car then I do at home.  Home to work 1 hour to an hour 15 minutes, then work to home about 45 minutes to an hour.  Then I stay home for a half hour maybe 45 minutes then I'm off to the second job which usually takes anywhere from 1/2 hour to an hour.  Which sucks because you have to give yourself time because you never know on the traffic so I can either get there right on time or could sit in the car or break room for half an hour depending on how bad or good the traffic is, then from work back to home about 1/2 an hour.  So all in total I spend anywhere from 3 1/2 hours to 2 hours 45 minutes in traffic a day.
 >:( blah!!! got win the Lotto  ::)

P.S.  Good luck on the job Stormie.

Oh my commute is horrendous.  It must take me 8, maybe 9 minutes to get to work and back.  And that's on a clear day!  Imagine when it snows - its like 10-12 freaking minutes in the car!   ;D

My commute would be better if my ******* car would cooperate >:(

I got in an accident back in January.  Finally get to the day before it goes to get repairs and the power steering goes out.  ****.  It takes them two ******* weeks of dawdling to get the damn thing back to me.  ****.  I get it, looks great, steers great but an engine light warning is on.  Roll over to the oil change shop (it was due the day of the accident) have them look around, nada.  Take it back to the repair shop, the ECU reads manifold.  ****.

Driving next day, it's feeling like it's going to stall out.  ****.  Into the shop, they check it, can't find what's wrong but recommend full service with new plugs, cap, etc.  Fine, whatever.

Drive to work today, get there fine aside from the ******* snow trying to pull me off the road.  Go to go home, car won't start.  ****.  Lots of juice in the battery (though I confess I'm due for a new one), even hooked it up to boost it, no start.  ****.  Starter or Alternator.  ****.  I'm guessing the latter because of the stalling out.  ****.  Into the shop tomorrow.  ****.

Deductible and repairs for power steering: $500 (ok, a shade under)
Full service and check up for problem: $500 (makes up here cuz a shade over)
Tomorrow, alternator (probably) and might as well get the ******* battery: $500

****.  ****.  And **** me.   >:(

Oh, and it's still ******* snowing.

I'm about 5 or 6 minutes away - on foot!

it seems like i have seen you mention before that you work in downtown dallas.  does your GF work with you there?  downtown dallas seems like it would be a bitch to get out of in the mornings.
