Title: Defender Wishlists 2009: Discussion
Post by: Scott on February 17, 2009, 11:30 PM
I know I told someone that we would start with the OT but I changed my mind based on what was revealed at Toy Fair and hopefully by this summer the late OT waves will at least have some rumor legs to them and people can make some better educated guesses.

We'll also do a Clone Wars one again separate from the EU list

CW 2D or 3D, or both?  Just curious.

I think we'll do both, only because recent Q&A tend to say that they don't plan on making any 2D stuff in the near future

R5-A7
R5-X2
PK Droid(s)
Gardulla the Hutt
Tey How (ah, if only they still had Commtech chips! her badly modulated voice would be perfect)
Edcel Bar Gane (the senator with the mirrored bug eyes)
Greblieps (the ET senator)
Clegg Holdfast (pod racer w/ antlers)
Queen Amidala (the purple dress with the lekku headgear)
...and the specific pit droid who kicked Jar Jar in the nuts!  :)

Clegg Holdfast was confirmed in Hasbro's Toy Fair presentation.  He'll be out later this year.

Cool!  Thanks, Nick.  I hadn't heard about that one yet.

In that case, I'd like to second the nomination for the SA Naboo Security Officer.

Cool!  Thanks, Nick.  I hadn't heard about that one yet.

Hasbro's slideshow was out of date at Toy Fair.  They stated that Ratts Tyerell had been pulled and would be replaced by Clegg Holdfast.

1. R5-X2
2. R5-A7
3. R2-G2 (Mos Espa)
4. Yellow Welding R2 (Podrace hangar)
5. PK droid
6. Welding droid (Mos Espa Streets)
7. Welding droid (Watto's Junkyard)
8. R1 astromech (Watto's shop)
9. Green oilbath R2 (Watto's shop)
10. Gray oilbath R2 (Watto's shop)

Good list!  I wanted to add one of those welding droids myself, but I couldn't figure out if they had a name.

Are we moving onto a new round anytime soon, after all we havent even gotten to the OT yet.
Title: Re: Defender Wishlists
Post by: David on March 11, 2009, 12:16 AM
It's been three weeks. There's still one week left I believe. It does seem to go on for a while, but it's probably just to give everyone a chance to submit their lists who haven't gotten a chance to yet.

Post by: CookieeMonster on March 11, 2009, 12:25 AM
Oh I see I didnt realise it was monthly so to speak, in that case its fine, I thought it was  2 weeks then another one would start up, lol.

So I should be putting together a list for AOTC now then, damn is there anything I would seriously buy from this movie. I suppose theres the Outlander Club Scene, oh and Zam Wessel other than that I will be looking at interesting Aliens, I can use as background fodder for Bespin.

Title: Re: Defender Wishlists 2009 Results
Post by: Jesse James on March 19, 2009, 04:56 PM
Wow...

No Panaka, no Soldier, no Guard...  No army builders period.

I'm disappointed in the results, personally.  I do like the R5's, but besides them really only Jar Jar piques my interest since a definitive Jar Jar would be nice.

E1's getting pretty "meh" for figures I guess.

Here's a heart breaker for you Jesse:

#11 Captain Panaka
#12 Naboo Pilot
#13 Naboo Security

The top 8 far outpaced Jar Jar and PK Droid...maybe next year :-\
Title: Re: Defender Wishlists 2009: Discussion
Post by: Jesse James on March 19, 2009, 05:47 PM
I'm hoping the AOTC Panaka maybe leads to at least new Royal Security figures...  But really they, the Royal Guard, and the Soldiers all need resculpted badly.  I'd say they need a new pilot body with a cloth trench coat too.  AOTC meant TPM army builders are hurtin'.

Thanks again for continuing these Scott.  Looking at the AOTC results, it really looks like - aside from a bundle of Padme figures - that movie is getting pretty well covered at this point.  With (finally) an "ultimate" Obi-Wan on the way this year, as well as 2/3 of the Lars trio, we're getting closer all the time.  I still have hope for an all-new Zam - and of course the various Padmes - but its getting a little more difficult to find figures from this movie now.

WHOA.  8 out of 10 AOTC finalists are female?  I know these are the votes of the JD forum community, and that the results will get presented to Hasbro at San Diego Comic Con.  But one thing we've seen over time is that female characters don't sell as well as male characters.  Obviously we've got to respect the voting process, but I don't know how well this particular episode's results will be received.

No worries Nick.  Hasbro has 9 years left on their contract, so that's only one release per year.  I'm patient.  ;)

Well, they could make a Jedi female (like Sarissa Jeng (sp?)) and I'm sure those would sell decently. And maybe they could make another Padme Evolutions pack? I think those sold well, too.
Title: Re: Defender Wishlists 2009: Discussion
Post by: Jesse James on April 21, 2009, 12:14 AM
Padme sets were some of the worse ones in my neck of the woods...  I truly don't get the fascination with getting Padme in every outfit.  Not something I'd care to see actually.  I dig her Outlander Peasant disguise figure to go with a NEW Outlander Anakin...  Zam Wessel is important enough to warrant a resculpt I think considering the action sequence she was in.  Female Jedi like Barriss tend to get a pass too...  More action oriented.

Jocasta Nu though?  And again all those Padme's...  Just not my cup of tea.  There's a mountain of resculpts I'd want first.  What about Captain Typho?  He'd trump all those to me...  I think I'd nominate training Clone resculpt even though it's not that old, above most of those figures.  I know I'd dig a Pablo Jill resculpt too, for more articulation and softgoods.  Put me down for a new SA Nikto Jedi too I think.
Title: Re: Defender Wishlists 2009: Discussion

I disagree, Jesse. I love the Padmes and really want the Picnic outfit. She's a main character (though downplayed in Sith). I think some of the gowns that were designed for Padme are some of the best... elegant. I guess that's why I want them. But yes, Padme's are not action figures and boys would not want to play with them. There are a lot of Clones figures that need redone, and I agree with you there. Articulation was bare minimum when they were released. Zam is a good one along with Outlander Anakin. I'd love to see those redone. I'm sure they'll get done at some point though, so I'm patient.

What about Captain Typho?  He'd trump all those to me...

Captain Typho is coming in the AOTC wave that's coming later this year.

I believe that it's the next wave after the ESB wave that is just starting to hit now.

Unless you mean him in a different outfit. I wouldn't mind new versions of him and Padme in the pilot outfits from the beginning of the movie.

Post by: Jesse James on April 21, 2009, 12:40 AM
i guess I meant the Pilot figure, yeah...  I forgot why he had that other outfit on actually, haha.  But yes, the pilot figure...  Hell I'd like a new Kaminoan or two, a new young Boba Fett, some younglings...  Padme Outlander's the only one I really have a desire to get right now...  I'm more into Padme's "action" outfits.  She needs a new E1 figure in her purple duds.

I think to put the Tonnika sisters on the list is a waste of a space.  Hasbro has already mentioned, ad nauseaum, that they won't produce them! I'm also going to omit Ponda and Evazan because they all but confirmed them.

That's one change I forgot to make (and now edited) - it really seems like the chances of the Tonnika sisters is slim to none.  Like you mentioned, they've said several times that it isn't going to happen.

I'm of the thinking that these are still valid choices to suggest as Hasbro could still make these figures IF they were not to use the likenesses of the actresses. The headsculpts and any packaging material can be made such that they do not look like the actresses - we know Hasbro already does this as many times the headsculpts don't match the actors and they use stylized imagery for their packaging. Unless Lucasfilm puts the kabosh on this, I don't see any reason for Hasbro not making the figures so long as they don't resemble the actresses that played the characters. In fact you can go one step further, in EU the two women we see in the Cantina have been established as NOT being the Tonnika Sisters, but instead members of the Mistryl Shadow Guard. So in essence Hasbro could create a new look facial look for the sisters with the proper explanation in the bio.

There's a discussion going on in the ANH voting thread about whether people should even bother putting the Tonnika Sisters in their wishlists. It'll eventually be moved into this thread (right?) so I figured I'd just post my thoughts here.

I think people should still vote for the Tonnikas if they want to see them made. I did. Even though Hasbro's said the chances are slim to none, that doesn't mean we shouldn't let Hasbro know we want them and would buy figures of them if they were made. If we didn't, wouldn't there be absolutely no chance at all of Hasbro at least trying to figure out a way to make them for us?

It worked with Yarna. It worked with ICMG. So VOTE TONNIKAS! 8)

It is a wishlist afterall.  Those are two figures I wish they would make regardless if they ever will or even can.  If we start telling people not to vote for certain figures then what would be the point of the wishlist?

I noticed on the recent Collector Force Cast that we've been discussing in the forums today, Derryl was again asked about the Tonnika sisters and shot them down again.  It was so far that he couldn't even discuss why they couldn't be done or anything.  It seemed really hush-hush for something as silly as action figures of two obscure characters :).  He did basically mention these (and the "burnt" Owen/Beru) would never be coming out, from what I gathered.

I'm ok with that I guess.  I've got other aliens/characters I'd rather see anyway, but the super secrecy around it is mildly dumb IMO...  Just say, "We don't have the rights to the likenesses", and be done with it?  Eh, whatever.  Go Bom Vimdin, you one-horned goon.
Title: Re: Defender Wishlists 2009: Discussion
Post by: Nicklab on June 3, 2009, 01:50 AM
I've always thought that with the Tonnikas it was a combination of things.  To me it seemed like the likeness rights may have been part of the problem.

But I continue to think it's a hands off situation more because the Tonnikas were unofficially called "Star Whores" in production materials and the character backstory was generally along those lines.  I think it's even more telling that when Decipher came up with cards for the sisters, an all new backstory was assigned to them.  They were made into spies/assassins who were posing as prostitutes.

I think that the likeness rights story has served as a good diversion for the fanboys.  Because when you think about the prospect for Hasbro to make figures of Star Wars prostitutes, it  seems like it may be a public relations disaster for both Hasbro as well as Lucasfilm.

And what's more telling?  In my years of reporting for a couple of sites, I've developed a *decent* rapport with the Hasbro guys.  I've gotten some off the record info from them.  One such item was about the Turbo Tank at Toy Fair 2008.  But I have not been able to get Hasbro to even comment on this off the record.  That's how delicate of a topic the Tonnika sisters seem to be with Hasbro.
Title: Re: Defender Wishlists 2009: Discussion
Post by: Scott on June 3, 2009, 02:00 AM
I just don't get the secrecy though.  And there are like 3 EU stories out there concerning these girls so the while the prostitute deal is probably as good as an excuse as any, to me that can be as easily changed quicker than you can say "Pons Limbic".  Why not just tell us that LFL has said no and that is that.  Part of their complete and utter stupidity over a somewhat dumb and overall irrelavent "secret" continues to build interest, needlessly

Also...regarding the prostitute angle...all I need to do is refute that with one "dancer"

Out of the thousands upon thousands of non corpse characters that they could tackle...only 2 are off limits?  Come on ::)
Title: Re: Defender Wishlists 2009: Discussion
Post by: Nicklab on June 3, 2009, 02:06 AM
I think that even if they said "We're not going to make the Tonnika sisters because they're prostitutes" they would still catch a lot of flack.  Because that's a public admission/statement about prostitutes in the Star Wars universe.  And the license has made a lot of money selling itself as something family friendly for kids of all ages.  Those things don't mesh up well.

I'll agree that Oola and even Leia in the slave outfit are provocative.  But there's still something of a leap from dancer to hooker.  Ballet dancers in the real world can dress somewhat scantily and there's never really a link drawn between them and a street walker.
Title: Re: Defender Wishlists 2009: Discussion
Post by: Brian on June 3, 2009, 09:57 AM
I don't get all the secrecy either.  We've talked about it before, but these are just toys after all.  Of course, I think they've sort of created this problem themselves (Hasbro).  In the past Q and A's, both online and at Fairs/Conventions, they have point blank told us we're not getting something (example: BMF) only to get it that same year.  There have been other examples of this as well.  So while they may tire of fans consistently asking about something like the Tonnika sisters, I don't think the fanbase really accepts their "not gonna happen" answers anymore - since we've heard it before, only to see things happen.  Personally, I get the feeling these really aren't going to be made, but we'll continue to see them asked about until the line ends.  I'm ok either way I guess.  There are plenty of other Cantina patrons to do, and if we get the Tonnika sisters at some point - great - if not, that's fine too.

The only thing about the Tonnika Sisters being considered prostitutes and named "Star Whores" is that the average person who isn't that big into SW but collects (maybe a parent who wasn't big into it back in their youth) probably wouldn't know the background story. Plus, if they're marketed as something different on the cards, I think that would be fine.

On the surface, it appears that most people wouldn't know the backstory.  But what about someone who's got an axe to grind against Lucasfilm or Hasbro, knows about that backstory, and knows how to draft a press release?  Someone could potentially turn a couple of action figures into a big public relations problem for both Lucasfilm and Hasbro.  These are toys, and the target market for them really is kids.

There was a production image of at least one of the sisters in an old official site article (http://web.archive.org/web/http://www.starwars.com/episode-iv/bts/article/f20030502/indexp5.html) about the Cantina patrons.  And that image had the name "Star w****s" on it.  Coincidentally enough that image is no longer available in the archived article.

If that's the only thing that links them to protitution, it certainly isn't enough for Hasbro or Lucasfilm to worry about some backlash from the religious right or something as a reason to not make the figure.  It looks to me much more ambiguous, and if I just seen the picture without reading the thread, "star whores" wouldn't have entered my mind.  It looks like it could easily have been carelessness in a hurried intern taking ref pics, and, most likely, it was indeed a very much a very one-off joke made by a bored photog when he probably had to spend a entire week doing hundreds of these shots of all the characters.

Very much a non-issue compared to the the actress rights problem that has been widely acknowledged to be the problem.

Please post the leftist political anger towards the Religious Right in the Sarlacc Pitt.

"Protitution" or Prostitution is not the problem, they can sell these as an SDCC exclusives geared towards adult collectors and a not a Mass market release. If you read the Wookieepedia back story there is no mention of Prostitution, they were con artists. There really is some legal jive with likeness rights/royalties that has more to do with Lucasfilm not Hasbro. I have ex-coworker friends at Hasbro and even they conceded it's a legal matter. I actually believe them when they say they are not happening. Bothering them every Q&A may help lobby the cause, but it's up to the Grand Flanneled Beard to grant permission. They must have really pissed him off.

On another note that Tonnika sister looks hot in a 70's sort of way in that BW smugshot.

They've all been great so far, but I really liked the results of the latest ESB wishlist.  It seems like one of the few OT movies that really still needs "ultimate" versions of the main characters, with Bespin Han, Hoth Luke, and Hoth Leia all making the list.  It would be nice if we could see all three of them next year, although that is probably wishful thinking.

As custom references go, that's outstanding stuff.  Good color matcher, and it even has the midget too.  That's good all around.  Really shows teh height difference in the sisters as well.  Thanks DB for posting that, it's gone into the custom images folder for future use.

Damn.  No love for the Giant Mouse Droid in the ROTJ poll.

I've been tallying lots of wasted votes on the ROTJ list (especially Ewoks):

Wicket (Coming 2010)
Paploo (Coming 2009)
Warok (Coming 2009 BP)
Wooof (Coming 2010)
Dressellian (Coming 2009)
Luke Jedi (Coming 2009)

I guess this is all subject to change but all of the above have been confirmed in Q&A's

Unfortunately, a lot of people would not consider those votes wasted, since even after those figures are released, they're just going to vote for them again as they will undoubtably be somehow obsolete or not up to the latest standards or some such reasoning.

A lot of people just don't care about getting all-new minor characters, and are only ever going to look at which of the main characters need to be redone.

So is there going to be time for an EU poll?  Comic Con seems to be fast approaching!

I love Scott's wishlists we vote for every year, but every year I'm always a little bummed at how spread out the EU stuff is.  And it seems to go that way even more as we get more and more EU figures into the modern line...  It's definitely the most wide-open category for sure.

KOTOR seems to be the only constant...  Maybe Dash Rendar too (which I really am not wild about...  A Han Solo rip-off, blah...  unless they made him mildly normal looking).

To all JD memebers, for your future EU wishlist consideration:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMW4Ad8fIF4

I want a Redd Sandford Jedi as seen in this Donnie & Marie 70's SW skit. Plus the Female Troopers are sweet!!!
That's some sweet 70's Star Wars action right up there with the likes of the Holiday special! (But I must admit Marie would have been a hotter Leia than Carrie!)

Thanks for the breakdown Scott (and for coordinating it, of course).

I think the results (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=19457.msg435631#msg435631) reflect JD's older crowd (I was going to say more mature, what was I thinking?) that has a greater appreciation for our childhood movies and the figures related to them.   There's certainly a lot of figures on that list that I would buy!

Thanks for delivering the results, Dan, you'll have to let us all know what kind of feedback Derryl gives you at SDCC.

It's a good original trilogy list mostly, and really a good list overall.  Hasbro's said specifically in the past that the lists have been used/gone over too, so it's nice knowing that the voices are being heard.  It definitely gives them a good idea of figures they should look at closely in the near future I think.

Thanks to Scott for once again handling all this.  It's a bit of work for him for sure.

I like that it's a voice too, for a crowd that have been into the hobby since Day 1, as well.

Awesome results. I picked mostly OT, so I'm well represented with 12 out of 15.

Big thanks for continuing to do this Scott, and doing a great job.  I'm pretty happy with the list as well, and I'm glad to see the OT heavy listings overall.  There are still some nice prequel figures left to do (or re-do), but at this point it is really starting to get where we fill out the remaining Cantina/Jabba's Palace figures, some of the still un-made vintage figures, and re-dos of things we haven't seen in recent years.  Happy with the placing of an all-new Bespin Han Solo, which is my top figure want at this point.

I'm very happy with the OT representation in the final list, particularly the Hoth rebels and Cantina characters.  Surprised with Bom Vimdin as the number one pick, though.  I'd have thought a less obscure cantina character or Jabba's denizen to be #1.

One thing I was glad did NOT make the list, was the Tonnika Sisters.  They're kinda becoming the "playsets" of the action figure world to me.  Hasbro's said no, so move on, ya know?   :-\  There's about a billion other items from ANH I'd rather slip into the list than those two at this point.  Even if they weren't off the table completely, I guess I just never found them that interesting.  I'd rather every goon Jabba has with him at the Falcon than the sisters at this point.
Title: Re: Defender Wishlists 2009: Discussion
Post by: Daigo-Bah on July 21, 2009, 04:46 PM
I'm also glad the Tonnikas were not up there.  Not to say I don't want them made (in fact, I want them made badly), but because of the other reason you mentioned:  Hasbro has said no.  Why waste a spot or two on the lists if they refuse to make them, for whatever reason?

Here is another cool nugget...the 2005 Wishlist results

Green were the winners
Red are done figures

There is lots and lots of red done in only 4 years.

We are going over the results and talking things over now... really, the wishlists is such a comprehensive poll that we're leaning towards using the existing '09 Wishlist Results instead of re-inventing the wheel and whipping something up in just 3 weeks.

You know, after looking at the top 30, the only figure I really wish was on there was a new Royal Guard with an Shadow Guard styled cape.

Wow, really?  I thought the list was comprised of TONS of great figures.  Some that need resculpts, some new, etc.  The Royal Guard was probably lower on my want list since I was ok with the ROTS figure.  :-\

I was ok with the ROTS version as well, and thought it was pretty well done.  I would like to see it re-released at some point though.  I'm sure it doesn't really fit Hasbro's criteria for the Saga Legends line, but maybe stick it in as a repack in one of the ROTJ waves over the next couple years.

My only complaint on the ROTS version is the Red is too bright, a little darker of a Red would be nicer if they refresh that figure. My only disappointment is no Ackmena on the list unless I missed something.

No doubts that every figure on the new list is great. Much better than scums which is half EU. If I had the responsibility of trading one out for a new Royal Guard, my head would explode.

The week after Toy Fair will mark the beginning of yet another year of wishlisting.  I've been updating my master spreadsheet this morning with recent confirmations and noted the following have been consistently (at least 4 years) in the top 10's of their respective movie lists:

Tey How
Kitster/Wald
Mawhonic
Ben Quadrinaros
Padme (Post Senate)
Cliegg Lars
Jocasta Nu
Dorme
Padme (Lake Retreat)
Padme (Ep3 Buns Hairdo)
Palpatine (Senate Duel)
Bom Vimdin
Owen Lars
Tonnika Sisters
Torryn Farr
Sim Aloo
Sgt Doallyn

Lots of those were on the ToyFare top 30 so our long waits are getting close to an end for hopefully most of these.
