I'm going to wait a year or so to see what the prices look like on the players and the new HD DVDs/BlueRay.  I'm not about to dump the hundreds I already have just to start all over again.  What a mess it was trying to replace all my VHS tapes a few years back.

So is anyone interested in the new "Ultimate Edition" box sets coming out for the Bond films? I never picked up the 'Special Edition' boxed sets because they looked cheap and were out of order. So I'm thinking now would be a good time to upgrade.

MGM/FOX doesn't make it easy, though.

For Region 1, there are four volumes being sold with each volume having 5 randomly arranged movies (which I ******* HATE!), the movies are in the cheapo slim cases that you find with TV Season DVDs, retailing at about $60 per box. From what I've heard, every other Region is having the opportunity to buy the titles individually, in standard cases - and they can even buy a briefcase with ALL of the films...

Here in the US it appears that we've only got these jumbled box sets.

Anyone else find this really, really annoying?

I dunno if I'll bite or not.

Yeah Brad, it sucks basically.  Box sets should be nice.  I'm fine with Family Guy being in slim cases, it's just a tv show with multiple episodes per disc.  But the Bond films are fairly major film each in their own right, so they deserve a bit more than that.

My wife is a major fan of the Bond films, but we still haven't replaced all the tapes yet, about the only thing we have left on VHS. (well, maybe some 1980s porn :P)  I was waiting for the Ultimate editions to show, but now maybe I'll look and see what's on ebay or find some older clearanced sets :-\

Oy.  I lurves the slim cases.  TV shows, movies, whatever.  Standard keepcases take up way too much real estate.  I've even given considerable thought to converting much of my collection over to slim cases.  Oh well--matter of taste, I suppose.

---

Not much of a Bond fan here, but I don't envy the people who are, due to the way those films have been handled on DVD.  Going in and out of production, tied into the theatrical releases, all kinds of various exclusive bonus discs, mish-mash box sets. . .  ugh.  I know the reason the box sets are the way they are, and aren't spread out chronologically/by actor--'cause the studios aren't idiots, and they know that if they arranged them logically, people would just go out and buy the set with their particular favorite Bond (Connery, Brosnan, whoever) and skip the ones with the other guys.  So they mix-and-match, and make people buy 'em all.  Sucks, but it makes good business sense.

I'd say importing one of the sets from another region is the way to go for Bond fans, as long as they've got a region-free player. . .

The problem with the slim cases is that, at least from what I've seen... you cannot make out the titles on the bind due to the way the boxes are made (the box is a sleeve like old VHS boxes, not like the open-faced boxes for DVD's)... that, and each movie has a little booklet - but the books can't fit in those tiny cases, so you end up with a bunch of loose books that get bent to hell.

It just ends up looking cheap, to me.

It's much the same for me - I like the display that's created with the larger cases than the slim versions - you can see the titles readily.  I expect we'll move towards the slimmer cases as time goes by though, if only for practicality.

Nail on the head.  My wife would have bought the Connery films alone.

I do agree with you guys that the spines can be difficult to read on the slimcases--I guess I just like the room they save more than I dislike what the spines look like.  And there are still ways to include the inserts (those discs that still come with 'em) in the slim cases which are fairly satisfactory.  The problematic inserts are those multi-page booklet types, but those things are few and far between.

I expect we'll move towards the slimmer cases as time goes by though, if only for practicality.

Have you seen the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray cases yet?  They're both slimmer and shorter than the standard keepcases, but a little fatter than the slim cases, for kind of a happy medium.  I like 'em.

I like being able to read the titles myself too, but I can definitely see the benefit space wise.  We're getting to the point now debating which DVDs get packed away or put in drawers, and not displayed on the shelves.  For example, we have two versions of the LOTR trilogy out now - and although I like the extended versions better (and they look spiffy with their book-like packaging), but regular theatrical versions are easier/smaller to display...so we'll see.  I think we'll see more and more DVDs getting packaged smaller though, as was mentioned above.  You see some TV box sets starting to go that way now as well.

Suggestion of the week.  That's what I did when the sets first came out.  Every single Bond film (SE) for something like $100.

All I had to do was buy some cases - the discs and artwork were included in the sale.

I reckon, but I guess she'll have to appreciate the differences.  I don't hit my wife; I'm not losing my hair; I don't have a Scottish brogue.  But I do drink Scotch, so besides that she'll have to put up with me being bitchy.   :P
