Title: Japan
Post by: Scott on March 11, 2011, 09:16 PM
Thoughts and prayers to everyone in Japan...just awful :-[

8.9 earthquake and 23 ft tsunami.  What a horrible event.

The worst part must be enduring the aftershocks, wondering when it'll finally end.

I finally saw some footage of this tonight.  Just scary crazy what happened (and is still happening) there.  The tsunami video looks like something out of a scifi flick.  Saw on the news that you can text 'JAPAN' to donate $10 to the Red Cross.

Revised to 9.1 and Japan's nuke reactors are on the cusp of meltdown.

Yes,if the nuclear reactor does meltdown the tsunami damage will be least of their problems.

Revised to 9.1 and Japan's nuke reactors are on the cusp of meltdown.

Well, not exactly...  ;)

It appears the outer structure of the building that houses the reactor blew off in the explosion, but Japan's chief cabinet secretary, Yukio Edano, says the reactor's inner container sustained no damage.

"The nuclear reactor is surrounded by a steel reactor container, which is then surrounded by a concrete building," he said. "The concrete building collapsed. We found out that the reactor container inside didn't explode."

Sounds like they have it under control, but I'd still be moving my family as far away from the plant as I could.  Assuming there is anywhere safe to go and roads to go there on.  Ugh.

It's amazing how few people died because of Japan's emergency preparness drills and high building standards. If it was anywhere else in the world, it will be millions dead. It's the tsunamis that cause the most damage. I guess they learned from that previous huge earthquake and all of those giant monster attacks.

I don't think was have any good estimates of the dead from the areas that were hit by the tsunami.  That had less than 5 minutes warning between the quake and the wave.  I don't think they evacuated.

We got the tsunami here in San Diego and some dumb ass 59 year old woman and a few of her family members got pulled in to the sea and had to be rescued. A few boats got thrashed and a bait barge/Pier broke apart.

Why was the woman a dumb ass?   ???

Because the entire West Coast had the tsunami warning for several hours, but people still disregarded it and headed for the beaches to watch. There was no reason other than her own stupidity that she should've been close enough to the water to get pulled in by the tsunami. And yes, the CA coast DID get the tsunami. At a fraction of the magnitude that Japan received, and with hours of warning, but it did, indeed, hit the CA coast. Initial estimates are $50 million in damage from the tsunami in California.

Except it was mostly northern California. The waves were alot smaller down south simply because they traveled farther.

The reactor thing is really frightening...  I mean, on a level that transcends just what's going on in Japan.

BTW the text thing I keep seeing is text REDCROSS to 90999 I think it is, and you donate $10...  Just incase anyone wants to.  I think I'm going to tomorrow.  I've sort of been leery to jump into the digital age of moving money about.  :-X

Sounds like the worst has happened and a reactor has ruptured...bad bad bad :-[

Time to call in the Super Action Battling Seizure Robots!

RE The Reactor Issue: No one should ever build anything so big and so dangerous that cannot be simply turned off. I don't understand why there is not a giant metaphorical extension cord they can't just pull out of the proverbial wall socket.

Yes, my knowledge of nuclear physics is astounding.

Seriously though, how safe is it to have a power source that you cannot control?

The "off switch" is the cooling water.  You can't just stop a nuclear reaction.  This could be much, much worse.  At this point, there has not been a failure of the reactor containment.  Many of the building have been destroyed, but I don't think you build to withstand a 9.0 earthquake.

Missile silos in the U.S. are built to withstand them I thought?  Maybe not though...  I'd just think that a nuclear plant would be similarly built but I suppose there isn't really a prep you can do for something like that.

I heard it was more the tsunami than the quake.  But who the hell knows.

They can handle quite a bit....but we also keep them away from major active fault lines.

It was the tsunamis that damaged the cooling systems.

But there are concerns that the Fukushima reactor design was not as safe as it should have been.  This former GE engineer (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110315/wl_nm/us_japan_quake_engineer) explains that because of those concerns at the Fukushima Daiichi plant he resigned his position.  Newer reactor designs have cooling systems that do not rely as much on electrical power for water pumps and heat exchangers like those used at Fukushima.  It's those systems that have failed because of damage from the tsunamis.

The bigger concern seems to be that the situation at Fukushima is getting so much worse that workers at the site are being pulled out because of the radiation danger.  Without those personnel in place to keep actively working at cooling down the reactors this crisis could approach proportions close to that of the Chernobyl disaster.

Whatever they are paying those 50 dudes working on-site, it's not enough. Those poor guys are fighting to save the whole damn country. Truly heroic in light of the tremendous personal risk.

You're talking about a society that largely revolves around honor.  They probably aren't that concerned about the money, and if they live will likely be well taken care of.

Ugh, another 7.4 Magnitude quake off the coast of Miyagi this morning. What an ordeal for those poor folks.

I don't think anything over 7.0 should really be considered an "aftershock". Freaking buildings were shaking for over a minute in Tokyo.

Nothing like a tsunami of radioactive water to brighten your day.  :-\
