SYDNEY, Australia - Steve Irwin, the quirky Australian naturalist who won worldwide acclaim, has died in a marine accident off Australia’s northeast coast, local media reported on Monday.
Queensland state government sources quoted by Australian Associated Press (AAP) said Irwin, 44, whose television show “The Crocodile Hunter” won international acclaim and popularized the phrase “Crikey”, was believed to have been killed by a stingray barb that pierced his chest.
He was filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas when the accident occurred, the report said.
Sky Television also reported that Irwin had been stung by a sting ray.
Australian emergency officials could not immediately confirm the reports.
Irwin won a global following for his daredevil antics but also triggered outrage in 2004 by holding his then one-month-old baby while feeding a snapping crocodile at his Australian zoo.
This is a breaking news story and will be updated.

"I told you so" doesn't quite feel like enough...
Joking aside, at least the guy died doing what he loved. Too bad it was so soon.
-
I was reading the article on CNN. Yep, he loved what he did & he knew the risks.
I have no fear of losing my life - if I have to save a koala or a crocodile or a kangaroo or a snake, mate, I will save it.

Major bummer. :(
-
I can't believe it. Two of my favorite shows on TV today are Jeff Corwin's and Steve Irwin's. What a shock. I just hope his family does okay after this. It's always hard to take a death on family, but his child can't be that old now. Hopefully they had enough income from the shows to stay well now that he's gone. His wife was also in the occupation, was she not?
-
Holy **** is right... this one came out of nowhere. RIP.
-
Here's something I found on imdb:
"He tells his camera crew to always be filming. If he needs help, he will ask for it. Even if he is eaten by a shark or croc, the main thing he wants is that it be filmed. If he died, he would be sad if no one got it on tape."
I wonder if something will show up on youtube tomorrow...
-
Yeah, I just saw this on CNN.com too, and was pretty shocked. I'd actually been talking about him (mimicking him, more like) just last weekend, when we had two rattlesnakes in our front yard. Very sad. He was an entertaining fella, and his animal/reptile/fish adventures were always cool to watch. Hope there's snakes and crocs wherever he winds up so he can still have some fun. RIP, mate.
If he died, he would be sad if no one got it on tape."

Yikes, that'd be a bit eerie to see, but I'd probably watch it out of the usual morbid curiousity. Of course, seeing a stinger hit his chest isn't quite as gnarly as a croc or shark attack, so at least the gore factor would be minimal... :-\
-
Hm. I lost a lot of respect for this guy when he risked his son's life by placing him near a croc (I think that was the animal). Not that I'd want him dead, but he's definitely gone over the line in the past. Risking your own life is one thing, risking others is too much.
I guess he pushed his luck one too many times. :-\
-
Crikey! :o
-
That's too bad. He was a pretty cool guy.
-
I'm sadden by his death and the lost to his family. Only seen his shows a few times usually stuff on regular tv. .
-
In a sense, I can believe it. But in another, I can't believe it. I remember back when he first became famous, and I thought he was a moron after doing such stupid stunts. And then when he did it for years, he almost seemed immortal.
But apparently he's not.
R.I.P. Steve.
-
Well, today I learned that stingrays are dangerous. I didn't know that tail of their's was so menacing, apparently they can accelerate it to projectile speed and plunge that barb into it's prey. It usual does it as defense only.

I have a new respect for these critters:

Crikey! Didn't see this one coming. Hope his family is doing alright.

I wonder if they'll close the stingray petting pool at Sea World now.
I've seen his shows plenty of times and it was only a matter of time before he got seriously hurt/killed. It's a shame, and I wish it hadn't happened, but at the same time I'm not all that suprised.

It was filmed, but the cops have possession of it.

My understanding is that all those rays are de-stingered in some fashion. There would have been hundreds of incidents there by now if they weren't.
-
:'(
I loved his show. You'd think he would of got killed by a croc or snake though.
-
Yeah, when I first heard this I thought for sure he must have been killed by a crocodile or a snake. I never would whave thought a stingray would do him in. I feel badly for his wife and kids. Yes, he was do for something like this unofrtunately. It still sucks as I actually liked this guy and his shows. I was a little put off by him taking his 1 month old son with him but not as much as the media made it out to be. Anyway RIP Steve.

There was a sign saying "Don't Pet their tails" ::)
-
Yeah, but one could of moved quickly (while the person was not moving) & stung someone.
Edit- Fixed it.
-
Yeah, but one could moved quickly & stung someone.
Come again?
-
this is shocking. i thought he was past the super dangerous stuff that made him famous. it sucks that an unlikely strike by a usually non lethal animal could kill him.
-
The crazy thing is the chances of the stingray barb puncturing his heart is astronomical,(No Han Solo/Threepio jokes. "Never tell me the odds"). Whats even more amazing, is the fact that divers will even catch rides on them. :-\ Just one stinger, in the most impossible place. :'( :'(
-
I feel bad for Mr. Irwin and his widow as well. I really liked his enthusiasm towards "meeting his death" by wrangling/handling large exotic animals.
What are his kids' names? I heard them on the news earlier today, but I couldn't quite understand how they're names were pronounced.
-

Divers catch rides on Manta Rays not sing rays. The are two different animals.
-
His wife was out hiking and did not find out until after she got back home. He leaves behind a 3 year old and 8 year old. There have only been 3 other deaths by stingrays ever recorded. Irwin was world reknowned as a top authority on reptiles. Even though many of us that watched the show always made fun at his over excitement in catching a venomous snake and his "Crikey" statements he will be missed. :'(
-
Honestly, his death shocked me
I mean, it just came as such a wake up call
When I was a little kid (not long ago) I loved his shows
and now...
I just never really expected him to die so soon
Actually, I never even thought of him dying
-

17 to date. Scratch that, 18 after today.

It's been awhile since I was there, but I still could have sworn that the last time I was there some guide was telling us about how their stingers (barbs I guess...) had been removed and that they were harmless.
If they all had barbs they'd be getting shot out left and right with all that petting going on.
-
This is ineeed sad news, I was chocked when I read it, this was way to early to pass away.
sure everyone on Skywalker and Rebel Scum are sad to hear it too, exept you alltime favorite Australian (GNT of cause), who hated Steve Irwin.
-
Its been pretty amazing down here, first time I heard it I thought Croc or Snake but then to hear it was a Sting Ray I was kinda shocked.
The media down here is really running with it, to the point of tackiness.
Tonights news was broadcast from his Australia Zoo and one current affairs programm after was there too, with the presenter going so far as to have a lizard on her shoulder towards the end of the show. There are also specials about him and his life on aswell.
I feel for his wife Terri and his kids Bindi and Bob but I think there comes a time when the media needs to step back and take a look at themselves , tonights news did little for me other than to annoy me.
RIP Steve , you were a champ
-
I was really shocked to hear this over the weekend as well, and as others have mentioned, when I first heard he had passed I thought of a croc or snake or something like that. To be honest, I had no idea that stingrays could kill people until I had heard this. Thoughts and prayers with his family in this difficult time.
-
Would you people watch the footage of his death seeing as he wants the footage released to the public. I have mix feeling on wether I would watch it or not.
Watching Croc Hunter on Animal Planet I learned something about Steve Irwin that I hadn't know, that he ended up saving some guy's life off of Mexico.
-
The footage was being shot for a new program that was due to be hosted by his daughter. Even though he said if he went, he wanted the cameras rolling..I highly doubt the footage will ever see the light of day.
If it were my dad doing something for me and he got killed, I don't think I would want to even think about the possibility of seeing it.
-
Yeah, I'd watch it I guess. I don't think it'd be nearly as horrifying as the beheadings I watched coming out of Zarqawi's (good riddance) group in Baghdad. Now that was horrific. But I think it was important to watch, especially for half this country, so we really understand what it is that we're up against with radical muslim extremists.
Anyhow, I got derailed there.
What I'm really trying to say, is that I've seen way worse. So yeah, I'd give it a look.
-
But I think it was important to watch, especially for half this country, so we really understand what it is that we're up against with radical muslim extremists.
Which half?
-
Don't bring politics into this, Dressel.
-
Someone needs to declare war on these mantafascists and their weapons of individual destruction before they indiscriminately stab more Aussies.
Vote GOP in '06, or the stingrays will win.

I don't Steve either..LOL

He deserved to be killed. It's amazing how we(my family) never took bets to that date what animal he was bothering/being stupidly close too... he would be killed by.
We always discussed how much an idiot he was and how he got famous risking his life in the name of stupidity. How I was pissed when he tried to involve his infant in his stupid game >:(. What comes around I guess- just took awhile this time. The wife and kids ..we don't have remorse either since there's a whole smorgasborg of others up-and-coming to take his place
See- Jeff Corwin, The Mythbusters ect.--It's fun to watch them try and bite it every week too.

He deserved to be killed.
That's a really insensitive thing to say.
How I was pissed when he tried to involve his infant in his stupid game >:(.
I'm sure he knew what he was doing, he wasn't holding his kid too close by the looks of the footage, and he's had a lot of experience.

With your first point, I can say I agree.
With your second point, I can say I disagree. An infant not between a barricade and in a carrige with it's parents at the zoo is too close, no matter what end of the crock pen he's in.

I tell it how it is...actually, we all deserve to die in some way..otherwise people could live forever. When you do stupid **** though you could be in for a shorter stay. Insensitive? What? Do you know who your speaking too ;)?
I'm sure he knew what he was doing, he wasn't holding his kid too close by the looks of the footage, and he's had a lot of experience.
One day ..when that kid grows up..and comes across that footage of his dad swinging him over the croc he just may become mortified and think " Yeah, my Dad WAS a dumbass..no wonder he got the early trip out"
Likewise one day after you've grown up you may have the opportunity to breed and be a parent. I don't know..it just might change your view here on that baby VS croc incident.

On another note..
I hadn't heard that stingray toxin was deadly. I wonder then if he just croaked from the 6-9inch long size of the stingers that those larger stingrays carry. Being impaled in the chest area from something that size could certainly do you in.
Wonder if he was trying a 'free ride' on the stingray(he certainly was a hands on guy)..."Have a go at this!..."
However the stingray had other plans proving nothing is free.
Sure we'll never get the details since that footage will prob. be locked up

Say you polished folk have plenty of stones to throw, didn't realize there were so many 'golden folk' in the world ::)
typical..always yes,yes man, yes, yes man..then when someone says something different you wanna throw a rock.
Where once was there a personal attack to you folks in here that have attacked me in this thread? that's right, so..in my defense you can all go lick some lighted dynamite.
*Dick oops, Richard, is already in that ******* on his way.
The man knew the risks and died because of them. He was not immortal but, rather overdue. I wonder though...with all the defense talk in here I wonder if some folk actually believe he was just swimming along and this stingray just came right up and stabbed him :P. No, I'm sure he was harrassing it in some way. A ride perhaps? Possibly...no, likely. So, yes, he deserved what he got.
Like I said no one in my house is sad, maybe dissapointed we can't be entertained by his stupid antics anymore but not worried because, like I stated, he has plenty of replacements. I could see if we knew him personally and all or his family but I can stand right up here and say I did not. The un-reality of television does not fool me into thinking I know his family and him..in the name of entertainment. I wonder though at many people in JD personally knew the guy and I'm not talking about 'you met him once' or anything like that to warrant all this bashing...I thought not.
Noticed plenty others in this thread including oooh dare I say moderator that basically said he had it coming. Nobody jumped on them so I hope the followers in here that jumped on the anti-Slothus bandwagon in here break an ankle today. I mean this isn't the ancient times where someone says something radically different and they are labeled a witch or had stones thrown at - this is 2006 show me some less classical behavior please.

Implying that with all the risks he took that he had this coming, is very different than you saying "He deserved to be killed."
At least I think that's fairly obvious.

It sure is Dressel.

Now would probably be a good time to stop disrespecting the dead, implying Steve Irwin had "victims", and just walk away, trying to salvage some scrap of respect from the people here that may still have some for you.

One of the new stand tabloids has 3 pictures of the attack. two of the photos show Steve swimming around the ray the third shows him grabbing for the barb in his chest. I did not read the article to see where they got the pictures from but if anyone is as curious as I was as to what Steves death looked like check out your local tabloid stand.

Saw that today. The blurb under the photos said that they were "an artist's representation based upon accounts of what took place" or something to that effect ....read...photochop.

I read that too at CNN. Hmmm perhaps there is something to this stingray conspiracy. I could be wrong about said earlier comments the CH provoked the Stingray. For whatever reason they are getting angry and fighting. I wonder if it's worldwide...perhaps I should get back to the Berkely pier and do some Ray fishing like I used too. What a Fight on a rod! Now that they're pissed it should be even better! After I gaff them I could swing them to the asian locals(let them risk the tail swipe) and get paid 20$ per Ray like I used too. They chop the wings off and sell them to local bay-area restraunts and merchants.
Interesting read it was..at least the old geezer is recovering. I didn't even know they could jump out of the water. On a fishing rod they can make blazing runs with the reel's drag and they also bury in the bottom-but never had one jump...interesting.
