The Vintage Collection / Re: Vintage Collection B-Wing

K-Mart is definitely an odd choice for a vehicle exclusive.  They've done some figures and battle packs, but I can't ever recall them getting a vehicle.  The packaging will be a selling point for some.

Will it do better than the Dagger Squadron B-Wing?  It's possible.  I don't know that the collecting community as a whole was prepared to embrace an EU based fighter like that.  A film based B-Wing might do better.

Complete with Admiral Ackbar in the cockpit? ;)

Absolutely keep Ackbar on the packaging.  I think if there's a new pilot, then stick him in the cockpit - that's one detail they could change.  But I'd love to see the rest of that original character lineup on the package.  You could probably substitute General Lando for the TESB Lando, too.

I for one would LOVE to see Hasbro offer this re-vamped Y-Wing in the same fashion as the Target exclusive Snowspeeder in vintage style packaging.  Revisiting this package with the new version of the Y-Wing and the modern renditions of these figures would be AWESOME!

News from The NY Times regarding the next volume in the series, A Dance With Dragons.  Apparently it is now in the hands of the publisher.

The Vintage Collection / Re: Hasbro Q&A Sessions
« on: April 28, 2011, 08:33 AM »
As a Q&A reader, I would like to see some of the sites start to band together to help coordinate their questions so there aren't so many instances of two (or more sites) asking the same question. Sort of a greater good effort for the community as a whole. Maybe I'm asking a lot - but even if it was just JediDefender, YakFace and Galactic Hunter (I only mention YakFace and GH 'cause I know guys who work those sites also post here) cross checking with each other before submitting questions, that would be a great start - if the fact that the cross checking occurs is made public and the sites are openly sharing answers, other sites are gonna wanna join too - it could be the start of a "Hasbro Q&A Coalition" of sorts...

That may be like trying to herd cats.

The rule of thumb when I was involved in the process is this:  if it's a super obvious question, avoid it.  Most likely other sites will ask it, and in numbers.

I counted 31 sites in that Rebelscum roundup.  Ton of sites I'd never heard of, either:  AllSpark, ASMzine, Awesome Toy Blog, JediNews.ca, Jedi Temple War Room (great, just what the world needs--another Star Wars nerd site with "Jedi" in the title), Kitty's Pride, Lichtgesundheit.de, Republic Forces Radio Network, and Sandtroopers.com.

Man, I'm glad I got out of the Q&A archive game when I did.

A number of those sites are offshoots from other sites.  I was involved in one of those, but that is no longer the case, as I've parted ways with the main site and only maintain a minimal presence there.  But some of these other sites were general toy blogs.

The drive for some of these offshoot sites was due in large part because of the way Hasbro had been conducting the Q&A process.  The sessions started to slow down.  Then the number of questions per site became limited.  But when it became clear that numerous sites that were networks of a sort, with URL's that were independent of one another and Hasbro was willing to recognize those subsidiaries in the Q&A process, more sites joined the mix.  In the case of the site(s) I was involved with, the push was to pose serious, probing questions to Hasbro that would be newsworthy for our readers and the broader collecting community.  In the case of those sites I think we accomplished that (most of the time).

But the process got bogged down.  Too many sites got involved and Hasbro / Hunter PR didn't set limits on the number of sites involved from the get-go.  Answers came back slower and slower.  There were more instances of multiple sites asking questions about the same topic and Hasbro sending the same answer back to all of those sites, word for word.  But all too often Hasbro has been getting questions that they say they won't address:  "When are you going to make X figure?"

Seeing some of the old school X-Men characters in the mix is definitely good.  Beast, Mystique and Banshee were pretty easy to pick out.  And the story point of Magneto with the Soviet sub is something that was a big deal in the comics in the 1980's, even if it was completely unrelated to this sort of story line.

Very limited character lineup in the Thor 4" figures.  We've got what, 4 or 5 different versions of Thor in both the basic and deluxe lines.  Only 1 version each of Odin & Loki (and does Loki have his helmet?).  A couple of different versions of the Frost Giants in both the basic and deluxe lines.  But no Destroyer?  No Warriors Three?  Hmmm.  I hope this line doesn't fall into some of the same patterns the Iron Man line went through, with a BAJILLION versions of the hero and nobody else.

The Vintage Collection / Re: Boba Fett Mail-Away Offer?
« on: April 26, 2011, 06:11 PM »
I got my 4 Fetts last week.  I still need to check them out for condition's sake.  But with 4 in hand I should have at least 1 or 2 that are MOMC quality.

My checks were cashed, and I sent my redemption forms in either in late February or early March.  Even though I got the post card, I FULLY expect Hasbro to get my Sgt. Brics to me.  I cannot imagine that they would want to start sending out refund checks.  And with the timeframe that the post cards have given us, it seems that Hasbro is probably ordering another run of figures so that they can process the outstanding orders.

From a story standpoint, you can see the angle that Dave Filoni was trying to play in the "Wookiee Hunt" commentary.  He's basically saying that the Wookiees have hired Sugi's ship much in the same way that Obi-Wan and Luke hired the Falcon to take them to Alderaan in ANH.

But what about the reality?  If it really was a case of foregoing a new Wookiee ship in the name keeping this episode on or under budget, do you really think that anyone would admit that openly?  I really don't think so.  People want to keep their jobs, and undermining a successful animation series with that kind of talk is a nice way to talk yourself out of a job.  George Lucas has said himself that films are never finished, they're abandoned.  They get to a point where the production has run out money and there will be compromises to the final cut in order to get it finished and released.  As for this episode of Clone Wars?  I can just see the production meeting where this story point was brought up:

"Well, the Wookiees are sophisticated.  They can fix & pilot starships.  They have this hyperspace navigation guild"
"But how long will it take the design team to come up with a Wookiee starship that George will approve?  And then how much will it cost to get the animation team to build all of the wireframes for the new ship?"
"The design team is probably going to need 2 weeks and will come in around $xx,xxx.  Then the animation team for the ship itself will cost another $yy,yyy."
"Well, what if we just modify an existing model and bring in some other characters to fly the Wookiees in?  We have the bounty hunter ship built already.  It might just need a little modifying, but I think that would cost $z,zzz."
"Okay.  Let's bring that to George"

That kind of reality is just TOO REAL for some fanboys to digest.  And that's why I think Dave Filoni told us what he did in the episode commentary.  It's like the old saying:  you don't want to see what goes into making the sausage.

I got the post card today, too.  I can wait.  Clone Wars figures are generally a lower priority for me, so it's not that big of a deal for me to wait until July.  Bric was in what, ONE episode in Season 3?  As long as I get him before Season 4 premieres I'll be fine.

Sure enough, I found this yesterday.  And now it's in a pile of starfighter vehicles, waiting to be opened.  Oh, the woes of trying to get a collection room organized!

I hear ya, I am moving next week and am facing the same dilemma. Plus I have about 20 trips shuttling swag back and forth to look forward to...yeehaw.

Been there, done that.  When I moved about 2 1/2 years ago I made COUNTLESS trips from where I had my collection in storage over to my new place.  Honestly, if I could do this over again, it would have been much easier if I had put up all the shelving first and THEN moved my collection.
