Title: Rare? Medium Rare? Medium?
Post by: Depmode on March 24, 2003, 09:58 PM
Just starting to get into these figs... I was just wondering, but are there any like "Rare" figures that I will have to look forward to (sarcasm) having trouble getting? Just wondering. Thanks!  :P

I usually prefer my burgers to be cooked at Medium.  Oops, sorry.  Got a little mixed up there for a sec.  My bad - must be a little hungry or something...   :P

Anyways, welcome to the world of POTJ James!  It's a beautiful line of figures.  I'm sure you'll enjoy them!

As for as the toughies go:

The hardest by far is the Masters of the Dark Side (MOTDS) Vader/Maul 2-pack.  It'll run you at least $30 most everywhere.

As far as basic carded figures go, I'd say the 3 toughest ones to find were probably the clean Biker Scout, Sandtrooper and R2-Q5.

IG-88, dirty Biker Scout and FX-7 were somewhat hard to find for some people as well.

Not sure if you collect carded or loose, but if it's loose, you'll probably be seeing a few more of the HTF POTJ figures get repacked, as has already been down with Teebo, and Eeth Koth (though the RFT and IO are technically different as far as the head sculpt goes).  So there very well could be some more POTJ rehashes showing up in the Saga line in the near future.

Obviously you should check out the various trading/classifieds boards, and maybe throw "POTJ lot" into your eBay favorite searches and hope to score a nice lot of them all at once.  Most of them can still be had for regular retail or less, but some of the more popular ones, as well as the ones I listed above might be a few bucks more.

Good luck with your search James and keep us posted on any great deals if you land 'em!

POTJ was definitely one of my favorite lines.  Nary a stinker in the bunch.  As for the toughies?

-Masters of the Dark Side  2-pack

-Scout Trooper-Imperial Patrol (clean)
-Sandtrooper-Tatooine Patrol
-Scout Trooper-Imperial Patrol (dirty)
-R2-Q5
-IG-88, as JediMAC mentioned, has become kind of scarce
-Han Solo-Bespin Capture (one of my favorites!) hasn't been hanging around all that much.  You can probably get one reasonably
-BoShek
-Teebo
-R4-M9 (this wave in general was tough to score)

Nice work!

IG-88 is tough and he has 2 versions - open claw & closed claw.

I also have been trying to track down a Chewbacca Djarik Champion for a long time.

I'd add the following to the lists that have been posted here:

- 300th Boba Fett
- Any retail exclusive 12" and all vehicles are pretty tough.

Most POTJ stuff is quite hard to come by at retail and for retail prices now, so your find was a really good one. I also really enjoy this release and wish you the best of luck building your new collection.

I find that to be an interesting one that you need, as it's one of the first figs I was able to pick up from this line, for $3!?! LoL. I swear, it's just the luck of the game. I'm sure i'll have trouble tracking ones down that u had no trouble getting at all.

I had one! Got it retail and then traded it and haven't found one since. No one has offered to trade me one either. As someone who wants every carded Chewbacca figure I can get, it's a bit frustrating. Nice pick up again. I hate you (but it's really just envy).

Over here in the UK (not that it is much help to you) the rarest (IMO) seem to be;
R2 Q5
Sandtrooper
Clean Scout
MOTDS

I still need 23 of the line and these three I don't see anywhere

I have a lotta extras in this collection I don't know why maybe it was my fav collection. I really like how hasbro opened up and created lots of original sculpts in this line. Anyway shoot me a PM and I'll reply with what I got. then perhaps we can work something out.
I'm quite positive I have an extra Dejaric Champion chewy as well for the earlier post.

as for what was rare- some say aurra sing was(not for me)But mostly the army builders like troopers ect were difficult. The masters of the Dark side 2 pack was easy for me (i guess timing) but it went to Wal marts once then was discontinued. And the Q5 astromech was really rare it was shortpacked in the Lando wave

Good older topic...

POTJ was weird for me.  It was one of the only collections of SW figures in the modern line that I can attest that I saw each wave at least twice.  The irony of all ironies was that K-Mart of all places was THE place to go (besides price varying from basic retail to $2 more).

I'd say most found the latter waves the harder to find...  The waves that included the Imperial astromech (R2-Q5 I believe) onward were hit & miss with retailers.  I know TRU got tons of late-wave POTJ in, but depending on the wave they would sell out really fast too.  Also the regional distribution was all over the place once more.  In PIttsburgh the Imp. Officer/Fleet Trooper/FX-7 wave was shipping in droves.  Good for me since I wanted Imperial Officers in droves too.

Just a state over though, they got the wave with Eeth Koth in droves.  Weird, as while he shipped here, we didn't really have Eeth Koth become a pegwarmer like he was across the border.

POTJ's deathnail was the over-ordering retail did at the start of the X-Mas season.  Around September the Ketwol/Duros wave hit and boy did it linger.  Still see remnant Duros and Ketwols at many TRU's, KB's, KM's, etc...  I've even heard of them at WM stores.  Crazy.

IG-88
Han Solo (Bespin Capture)
Sabe' (Queen's Decoy)
Ketwol (Card Damage)
Queen Amidala (Royal Decoy/Black Travel Gown)
Rebel Fleet Troop (Tantive IV Defender) x3
Imperial Biker Scout (Clean Variation)

(Scout I'm only trading for a "biggie" I need however)

I can help with any of the others though if you're interested.

I hope this helps, and not trying to promote buying in any one area or nothing, but at the current price I thought this bid was pretty reasonable for the POTJ line (or what is being offered) but I could be  wrong.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5988394742&category=50269&rd=1

Bid is currently $79.95 for  57 figures but not MOTDS or other ones like that. As mention before, I found it doing a search at ebay for Power of the Jedi Figures.

My local TRU still has five pegs of nothing but Duros and Bespin Guards. Still. And they refuse to clearance them.  ::) And they've been out for what, four years?

I only saw the FX-7 wave once, which sucked since I still want to get carded versions of those.
Saesee Tiin and Plo Koon waves were also scarce here, only showing once at K-Mart, where most of my POTJ purchases were made. I still need those and the Han Bespin waves carded.

What a great series of figures this was. Hopefully, Hasbro knocks our socks off with another line just like it in the future. Those figures were ones I didn't regret buying at all.

They gave the POTJ Duros out as a free figure to the first "X" amount of people in the door.

Not sure if EVERYONE got the same fig, but a bunch of us got him.

Ketwol, Duros, Shmi and Sabe are still on the pegs around here - TRU, go figure.

Great line, but prices were about as bad as they ever were up here.  TRU was charging $11.99 for them (Add the taxes and you're over $13) but that was about the only place to get them :'(  EB was the only place I found the Maul Sith Apprentice and they were worse - $14.95 :o  Walmart didn't step in until the R2-Q5 wave.

Surprisingly I didn't have too much trouble finding this line.  I paid a lot, but found pretty much everything.  The last two waves never came to Canada, but I found them in abundance in Seattle in '02 May, just prior to AOTC coming out.

Probably my favorite line of modern figures.  Even the misses were pretty good.

Yeah, I didn't see anyone with POTJ figs, Bob.  I did see a CT Han, and I saw POTF2 figures...  If I'd have gotten a droid like 2-1B or ASP-7, I'd actually have been completely content.  I love the ASP-7 droid actually.

Instead, Rebel Fleet Trooper...  Sheesh.

Anyway, I notice a lotta people around the net wishing for POTJ to come back, but as much as I like the line I really hope that only character choices are the kinds of things we see related to POTJ...  It's nice, but the line was still in the anti-articulation phase.  I'm actually pretty content with a lot of the OTC and POTC...  If the Cantina Wave from POTC were the standard, I'd be pretty happy in general.  Some figures may need an extra joint, or ball/socket over angle-cut here and there, but overall I liked POTJ for its time but its been surpassed in quality by many figures.  Even the ROTS line was an overall large improvement by direct comparison.  Comparing Agen Kolar and Eeth Koth alone makes me think along those lines.

I was thinking more along the lines of the character selection rather than the articulation.  Hasbro has moved forward, no doubt about it, with respect to making better figures for the same amount of money.  But POTJ was just so cool for the wide variety of characters with some really nifty features - Dagobah Vader, EW Vader, multi-head sculpt Officers.  No pregnant Padme, no crappy action features.  That's why I enjoyed it so much.  Just neat, well thought out selections of figures, for the most part.

I was a big fan of the POTJ line for the same reason.  Lots of the obscure characters/aliens.  and the common/main figures they did for the 10th time they seemed to do add a nice little touch to make them a little different, like chewie with his hands behind his back and the dejarick table, or Vader with the emperors wrath see-through helmet, etc. nice features, especially for someone like me who keep them carded.

I'm not a huge opener so I don;t necessarily look at figs in the same light as Jesse, where he really likes the articulation and customixing (occationally, if I get an extra fig as a freebie or a deal or trade, etc. I may open one here and there).
since I don;t open, I always like to hear his take on the figs.

Kind of a case where we both appreciate the figs, just for different reasons.  We each look at things in a different light.

Hard looking back to pick which line I really liked the best. They all had thier good and bad points.

I think the POTJ line was so good because Hasbro knew they had to kiss a lot of collector ass to get them to stay on board after Ep. 1. Since the ROTS line did a little better, I doubt Hasbro will go back to that formula.

Character selection was probably the best ever in POTJ...  OTC was a lot of redoing stuff that, today, sucked...  Dagobah Luke, Lobot, etc...  And of course the rehashes.  The Cantina wave of POTC ranks up there as the best wave of figures in the basic line ever though...  At least in the top 5.

THOSE figs are the type I'd like to see in the new line in 2006.  Heavy on articulation, and obscurity galore...  However, I'm also a huge fan of resculpting stuff...  There's little from POTF2 that (unless it's already redone) I wouldn't redo.  Nein Numb, Zuckuss, Piett, Endor Soldier, Hoth Soldier, Death Star Gunner, Tarkin...   All on my resculpt list. :)  That's a fairly diverse lot in and of themselves though so they'd fit into a new line well, geared at collectors.

POTJ's line was great character selection though for sure.  They even snuck in the main character EU designs which I actually liked.

And indeed, the astromechs, and the Imperial Officer, and FX-7 are all among my favorite figures in the line probably.  I still buy those Impy's anytime I see them.  I wish they'd re-release the Officer variants, or release them in grey uniforms even.  That'd be a whole new army to build.

Heh, Imperial Officers.  How hard can it be?  There shouldn't be any real costs involved in putting out grey uniformed officers, should there?  Simply take a Piett, Tarkin or other grey uniform and slap on the POTJ officer heads and you'd be done.  No retooling or resculpting needs at all.  Don't I wish.
Title: Re: Rare? Medium Rare? Medium?

I meant grey jumpsuited guys...  Just the POTJ/Saga guys, but in grey for "techies".

I want ALL new Impy Officer officers though...  as opposed to Techies...  But Hasbro's given us Ozzel, who ultimately is ok, but man he ain't what I want.

The Empire's in dire need of black, and grey tuniced Officers by the truckload.  Generic heads...  whatever.

Tarkin I kinda want separate, though a re-used body would be alright I guess, but I'd dig Tarkin with a little extra effort at the arms for that classic "contemplating" pose just before he dies...

My ideal Imperial Officer would be a resculpted Veers w/removable armor/helmet/belt/hat, and Hasbro then just re-used that figure for generic "troop builder" guys down the line but with new headsculpts.

That Veers just seems like it's a pipedream.  :(  Wish they'd surprise us with that one.

Well, with the rarity of the OTC Imperial Scanning Crew, it seems that there is definitely a market for grey imperial figs.  I know people buy a lot of stormies, clones, etc. for armies and dioramas, but there should be a better option for those wanting to recreate scenes involving the grey imps.  I would certainly purchase a 3 pack of imperials done the same way as the clone trooper 3 packs from Target...maybe with some color or rank variations?  Also different face sculpts and skin colors?  That would be great.  Hasbro is doing very well in my opinion with all of the Clone variations they are making available, I just wish we could have the same with some imperials.
