Photos at Yak Face's Instagram.
I appreciate that there's a new TVC item, and that it's a display piece / playset at that, but, it doesn't look like much.
-
I think it's pretty cool. But it needs a dark backdrop around it and the orange lighting that will add to the atmosphere of the scene. I'm actually looking forward to getting two of them to put together. But it leaves me wondering if you can attach the one side of the main deck but forego attaching the staircase. That might take up a good deal of space.
As for the figure? I'm semi-disappointed. I usually like troopers. But it seems like Hasbro wants to keep cashing in on Stormtroopers. A Bespin Guard that looks like the guard on the vintage Kenner card would have been a cooler pack-in.
All of that being said, I'm curious to see what Muftak cooks up for Cardboard Galaxy to accentuate the scene!

Me too! ???
That thing gets huge with both staircases attached (and I am in the camp that would display it with only one staircase if that is an option...that was how they built the movie set, though they implied with reverse angles that both staircases were there.)
I would almost want a wrap-around backdrop, and something to cover the peg-legs so the main platform looks like a solid unit. But they might've made it too big for me to do anything cost-effective to help it out!

Yeah, I also feel it's lacking something, too. I'd be happy just to have something that wraps around the base... and maybe a bit of the stairs. I think I might add some lights under mine.
-
Yeah it feels incomplete, like a piece of something bigger and better.
-
Looks interesting, but I can't see replacing my POTJ one with this.
-
It needs an overhead contraption with pipes and conduits hanging off of it...
-
Personally, I'm excited as can be.
10 or 15 years ago, I think that I would have been very vocal and opinionated on the design.
Older me feels like this is perfect for my needs and I think it's a smart approach by Hasbro. I'm happy with how this looks and hope it's possible that you can attach a 3rd set with steps to expand on it more. I do worry a little that the rail things might get warped.
Overall a good item and nice to see. I also am a little intrigued if this approach could work for Palpatine's throne room in ROTJ.

I dig it. But not fan of the Stormtrooper, though.

God forbid Hasbro put out some NEW original trilogy figures.

What? They threw you a bone with their hastily-cobbled-together digital art of a forthcoming kitbashed Bespin Escape Leia figure that they would absolutely swear to you was not finalized over the weekend!
So ungrateful!! ;D

That's nice display piece. Would be cool if two hemispheres are made to connect.
So in the last 18 months we've gotten 3x Han carbonite to 6x (??) TROS Vintage Collection? ???
edit: Just read Adam Pawlus' page -- multiples sets can inter-connect. But his wording suggests it's not the pit platform.

It is the pit platform. There are pictures showing two sets making a whole platform.

The distance from the main platform to the top of the stairs and the back of that upper platform seems pretty significant. Part of me wishes that they would have included the light tunnel beneath that upper platform. But the realist in me is happy that this thing is happening at all!
One detail that I didn't notice before about the Stormtrooper? A holster! Whether or not it's functional remains to be seen. But it does seem to be the one significant difference between this trooper and the Rogue One version.

Where'd you see those? I'd be curious to see what that looks like.
-
The orange panels kind of look like they might be translucent... we can hope!
Now I'm realizing how much of the chamber I do not have memorized. This dude has gone crazy with visualizing all the background details.

Thanks for posting.
It looks a lot cooler like that, although it looks kind of enormous when doubled up. I ordered 2, I can decide what to do about it later.
-
I ordered 2 as well. Have no idea where I can display it. :P
-
Easy peasy order on these today... lot of complaining about it on social media.
We went from pining away for glorified stands to bastardizing them apparently haha. I love this... ever since Jayson at Yakface rumored these, this is pretty much what I hoped for when thinking how it would compare to the JP set. They weren’t going to give anything too big and elaborate... Jabba’s was pretty simple when you break it down to part count and deco... looking the Bespin Freeze Chamber over closely, there is a lot of detail to it, but it’s fairly monochromatic.
Would I love the claw? Sure, but the claw is part of an all ceiling gizmo and the gantry is completely separate... them rigging up some half assed way to attach a whole other thing to the platform (which shouldn’t be there) would ruin its aesthetic, and realism. I’m fine with figuring out a way to do the claw myself ultimately. The platform is the scene, and Hasbro have said they did some things so customers can light it if they want (like how they did with the JP too), and I dig that stuff. My only meh is I think an Ugnaught or Bespin guard would’ve been good ways to get a cardback out for a fairly dull repack to complete the 92 for the people that give a flip about those cardbacks being out in some way.
-
As always nicely put Jesse
-
Agreed Jesse. There's only so much that can be done at a certain price point.
-
Thank you guys.
I had a dude reply to me today this should be $25... people keep posting arbitrary numbers like they have something backing it beyond “that’s what I have in me right now” or something. NOTHING is $25. Even the Probot was $20! I would say a speederbike rerelease today would cost $30 (Minimum) if I were a betting man.
It’s a $13 figure and a $37 pile of plastic parts that make ultimately a big glorified stand to display a lot of figures... it’s cool to me.
People are praising the potj Bespin chamber! What bizarro world **** is that?!
-
I sometimes wish I had never opened my POTJ set as it "seemed cooler" in the box.
-

Don't forget about the Carbonite block... That might knock it down to $30 for the playset.
And if you're upset about an extra Carbonite block, customize it into a thawing block.
-
I’m hell bent on lighting one. Absolutely hell bent on it!

I have a bunch did orange Christmas lights tied up under my old POTJ one... they make little LED’s on wires with battery packs that would make it so much easier this time.

I know it's just stairs and a circular stage on stilts, but for me it went from nice to pretty awesome with the two sets mated. Thanks for the link.
-
I’m talking the Carbo block itself, I wanna light one of those haha. Though I will light the playset too. Jabbas looks awesome with some simple white lighting through the vents so I def want to use what Hasbro gave us on the Bespin flooring to get that awesome orange glow.

Well, you light the carbon block for your Jabba’s palace scene, not for your freezing chamber scene.
-
I light them for all... or Lando can’t tell if he’s in perfect hibernation.
-
I guess one of the clickbait YouTube toy people posted how there’s a playmobil ghostbusters set he feels is evidence Hasbro could’ve given more here... now it’s all the arguments against this set for some dudes and I have tried to explain how comparing playmobil as a company to Hasbro is like comparing Lego to Hasbro and why it’s not a really valid argument to make... they won’t even read what I link, which is just corporate structure stuff about playmobil. It’s not war and peace or anything. 🤦♂️

I ordered 2 of these from GameStop today: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Carbon-Freezing Chamber The Vintage Collection Playset (https://www.gamestop.com/toys-collectibles/collectibles/figures/products/star-wars-the-empire-strikes-back-carbon-freezing-chamber-the-vintage-collection-playset/11103401.html?rt=productDetailsRedesign&utm_expid=.Hn2ODSotSjW4yWszOrBF7Q.1&utm_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gamestop.com%2Forder%2Fconfirmation%2F%3FID%3D1100000012958730%26token%3DyWm9bDH8An0fdkhquP0tqBgOMRET3-MNfd0t865Si2M) during the BOGO half off sale. It's running through midnight tonight, and you get free shipping. It cost me a little over $75 for both.

Awesome. Thanks!

Got my case of these from Gamestop today... they look great, and $85 shipped for the pair seems solid.
Unfortunately they're staying in the boxes for now.
-
Got mine in too.
It's definitely a little fragile - the steps don't lock on and connecting the two half circles is fine but they don't lock in place together. Good display, but as a playset not so much. I do like it a lot.

Amazon shipping notice. When it rains it pours
In the last two weeks or so I've gotten shipping notices for FOUR Gentle Giant mini-busts, 4 Pulse packages, the Best Buy Saga 5-Packs... with the Arc Troopers 3 Pack shipping any time now... it's like everything cleared customs at the exact same time.
-
I believe my Pulse freeze chambers are finally processing. That’ll be nice.
-
I was in a Best Buy store the other day and saw a couple of these sets. Nice to know that they can actually show up and brick & mortar retail!
-
These came in today and the overall product is really nice. It’s a huge display even cut in half. The levels to it make it a really nice thing to display on a long shelf with many figures around it. I like that it works well as more than just a “backdrop”.
Having it in hand I can see where the tooling for this would’ve been pretty big for some of the pieces, and pretty complex in other parts (the thin plastic piping would be incredibly hard to do injection Molds for that alone).
The base plate pieces are pretty sizable chunks of plastic though, and that means pretty sizable molds. Plus under them both is another sizable molded piece of orange plastic. It’s definitely not as simple as people were complaining. It is a bit monochromatic, but in person you see the variation, and it’s not exactly inaccurate to the scene so it is what it is.
I threw a harbor freight puck light under mine and the orange glow is fantastic. I like that Hasbro is intentionally leaving these displays with customizing in mind for the consumer. It’s that kind of forward thinking that isn’t getting much praise and should be.
Does it suck buying two to make it whole? Sure I suppose, but I can see this and not bat an eye at $50 for it.
I wish the figure were an ugnaught for the cardback or a Bespin Guard variant, but I also know why there’s no new tooling here and why an army builder is a more safe choice for Hasbro.
There have been pretty vehement complaints about this... largely from guys who think figures should still be $9.99 at most and who think ships are now all overpriced... for me though, I don’t regret spending $100 on this. It’s going to take an entire shelf itself, and it’s going to make one hell of an impressive and to-scale display. Yeah Vanth, it’s to scale.
-
Yeah I'm pretty happy with it. I actually plan to build a shadowbox shelf...thing for it specifically, and build the top part and customize the bottom area before running lights through the whole thing.
Jesse, do you have an example of the light you're using?
-

It could have been a repack of the David Duchovny Bespin guard we got with the last Carbon Freeze chamber. :D
-
I wasn't going to get this set, I just deemed it too big and in too much need of extra stuff to complete it.
But demand was there for Cardboard Galaxy to do some of the "extra stuff" for my customers, so I bought one as a business expense and started making inserts to slip up under the main platform to bring the wall of it all the way down to the floor. People seem to like them enough, and with some lining on the back of my inserts (one guy used tinfoil to great effect) they contain the light you might put underneath to get the orange glow.
I just bought a second set (from amazon on sale currently) to finish the circle and see what I can do to work up a backdrop or mini-scenes for under the back gantry pieces.
At the end of the day I think it is a neat set, especially if you are messing around with lighting it and taking pictures with it.

I appreciate this. I bought a couple for my 2 sets. I can't wait to get it set up!
-
If anyone has bought lights use to light up the display what have you used specifically? I want to do this and want to do it right.
Thanks!
-
Depends what your end game is... I’m planning to run my own LEDs but there are some cool new types of LEDs out there too. Very small strips and whatnot. I don’t really want bright spots bleeding through though.
-
I would think that an easy way to achieve the orange color would be with a lighting gel. That would probably help keep your options open in terms of choosing the LED’s that are reasonably well diffused, so you don't get the bright spots that Jesse is talking about.
This might be a decent option: ALZO CTO (Color Temperature Orange) Warming Gel Filter Selection Kit 8 x 8 Inches (https://www.amazon.com/ALZO-Temperature-Orange-Warming-Selection/dp/B07VPWSJ2Y/ref=asc_df_B07VPWSJ2Y/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=385174859961&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14918399621992386256&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9003592&hvtargid=pla-830862962348&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=76690811737&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=385174859961&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14918399621992386256&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9003592&hvtargid=pla-830862962348) - $14.50

For those looking to run some LEDs, I've been using these guys: Evan Designs (https://evandesigns.com/)
I think they're a husband and wife duo, but they've been awesome with giving advice on the whole process for getting lights into my Jabba's diorama. I plan on getting a bunch of lights for the Carbon Freeze Chamber as my next project.

Got my 2nd opener. Man, this is kinda big with the full platform. I love it, but have no place to display it!
-
Similar first world problem here. I prefer it to my barge tho so if someone has to go into storage, barge loses.

Seeing lots of online sales on this, and very few retailers that carried it. I wonder how this has performed / impact it will have on future playsets.
-
I picked up a second of these one of the times the price dropped on Amazon, and was finally able to open one up last week. I get some of the complaints, but I actually like it quite a bit. Looking forward to adding the second to it, but man does it take up some real estate. have to figure out where it is going first.
-
I grabbed myself 2 halves as well just recently for a good 30% off and for that price, I must say I'm rather impressed with it. I think this is one of those odd things that just works so much better when you have it in person vs pics online. It really is quite huge when it's all set up.
-
I finally opened mine and set it up over the weekend. While I like the concept, its just too big (that's what she said). I even removed a bunch of the "wire frame" that would require an even taller space.
I'm trying to maximize space, so I'm not sure I'm going to keep this displayed. I'll give it a go and see if I can get things below and on top packed in kind of tight, but one of the challenges is that there just weren't that many characters that interacted with this scene. I'll probably put all of the Cloud City denizens we have (not many), and maybe all the bounty hunters from TESB, but there is still going to be a bunch of room leftover.
Ultimately I'm glad Hasbro did this playset for those who love it, and just for the fact that they did a playset, but I'm not sure it'll stay in my shelves for very long.
-
I kinda agree, but wouldn’t want a truncated one. I can’t help but think this is partially why it comes in halves too. Complete, it’s a massive playset/display. A kind of iconic one which is nice though.
-
It's definitely very large. I think the options you have in whether or not to attach the staircase and the wireframe make it so that you can choose exactly how you want to display it.
Frankly, I'm a little surprised when I see these sitting at Best Buy stores. I would have thought that some people would be scooping them up for the unique Stormtroopers.
-
I have been tempted, but the one at my local Best Buy has a box that's pretty mangled.
