Title: How many of us are musicians?

----------------------------------

My parents made me take piano lessons as a kid (which I diligently kept secret from all my friends).  Lasted a good 7-8 years or so.  Hated it back then, but now that I'm closing in on my 30's, I guess I better appreciate the opportunity I had to learn how to play some music when I was young.  My old piano is still at my parents place, but it's still fun to twinkle the ivories whenever I head out there for a family function.

Though I can still play decently enough, and can still hammer out a nice tune or two when the situation presents itself, I've gotten a little rusty over the years.  I've given some consideration to buying a cheap piano or keyboard and jumping back into the music a little, as a form of relaxation in my old age now (especially considering it's no longer considered such a "nerdy" thing at my age).

So who else can play some music?  What's your instrument?  I know we must have at least a few guitar players here!

As a kid I was trained in piano. I played classical for some time.
I really messed up my left hand a few years ago. Since then I have not played. With all the therapy I went through my hand was out for almost a year.

Sometimes I think I will go back piano, I will just have practice, practice, practice.

I would really like to learn to play the Drums.

I used to play the trumpet from 2nd grade until my Senior year in high school.  After 4th grade I was consistently 1st chair in Junior High and High School.  In the state competition my Senior year in high school I was rated the #1 trumpet player in Illinois.  I got all these scholarships to go to so many different colleges, but I turned them all down.  After playing trumpet for so long I became burned out, and haven't played the trumpet ever since 1991.

One of these perhaps I'll pick it back up again, because I still have that same trumpet of mine.

Does air guitar count?  ;D

Seriously though, I don't play anything now though I had to take piano lessons back when I was in grade school. I think I took them for at least a couple years but I have forgotten all that.

Air Guitar does not count sorry

My story is eerily similar to Chris's.

I was a tromboning fool from 4th Grade through College.  I was an All-State Band Member for a year and I was really good if I say so myself.  I toyed ever so briefly with focusing on music some how but never really did.

One joy of college though was playing in some cool Jazz Bands and Combos, having some feature pieces in which I was the soloist.  It was great and I will always treasure my playing days.

I miss it, I got the old man out last month after we moved and played a little for my son, he laughed.  I would love to join a Jazz combo or community band if I had more time, such is life with a 1 year old :(

My wife...was an all-state Vocalist three years!  She is an amazing singer and one of her steady gigs is wedding soloist.  She also can play the guitar, piano and drums.  She is an awesome talent... :-*

Piano player here as well!  About a decade's worth of lessons as a youngster, but like Snively, I didn't advertise it too much to my friends...

I have a keyboard at home right now and still dabble on it from time to time when I'm bored or feeling musically inclined.  My issue when I took lessons was that I only wanted to play the cool songs that I knew from the radio - not all the classical stuff.  I hated having to learn all the beats and measures, and listening to the little ticking clock thingee and trying to keep up.  I obviously already knew how my favorite radio tunes went, so I didn't need to use that little thing-a-ma-bobber.

Unfortunately, my parents and piano teacher didn't necessarily agree with my theory that only popular stuff was good, so they forced me to compromise a bit, and play half classical and half fun stuff.  Still, I tended to stick with the classical stuff I kinda knew like Beethovens 5th, Fur Elise, etc...

I get to inherit my old piano back from the folks when we get out new house soon (yeah, like that's ever going to happen  >:().  I wouldn't mind picking up some lessons in the near future, but I have no idea what they cost nowadays.  Can't be having piano lessons eating into my Star Wars collecting budget of course!   ;)

Sounds like we should get a JediDefender band going!  Maybe do a little number together at C3...   8)  Or maybe Scott's wife could just be the whole band all by herself!   :P

I'm also an excellent singer too - at least in the shower, the car, and the house when Patty ain't around!

I started out on alto sax.  Years later, after a hiatus from that instrument, I took up bass guitar.  Now I play several variations of that instrument, as well as the upright bass.

I've been playing in all-original bands since 1995, and my current project might actually be headed somewhere.  We gig around the NYC area, and might be doing dome regional touring in the not too distant future.

I'm classically trained vocally, which is very much an instrument. There was a time when I was heading down that career path when I was younger, and was told by some pretty influential people that I had a lot of promise. Well, my life took another direction (a few different directions, actually), and sometimes I still look back and wonder what might have been. Hmph.

Sorry it didn't turn out for you Carrie, since you could've hired me to audit your recording royalties!   :D  Always a bummer when your dreams are dashed and you head off in another direction though...  Who knows though, maybe if you wind up in RI, and venture down to NY a bit, you'll somehow get "discovered" singing a tune in Central Park or something!  Never give up the hope!   ;)

My wife has become a college history instructor, but often regrets not pursuing an acting career (she was originally a drama major), or a sportscasting gig as well (big sports fan she is).  I always tell her, you never know what the future may hold for you...   :)

So just keep your voice finely tuned while you're in the shower (like me  ;D), so you'll be prepared when your big break finally arrives out of nowhere!   8)

Thanks for the encouraging words, Matt- but my voice is not what it once was, unfortunately.  The Lyric Opera wouldn't want me now! I've been off of training for some time now.  I've not a prayer to be "discovered", but that's okay- because in actuality, personality-wise, I'm not cut out for the limelight. I would have a very difficult time with fame.

Well, there are other outlets for satisfying the musical bug.  You should try looking into local choral groups.  They're out there, it's just a matter of finding them.

I'm curious, how many members of JD are musicians or play an instrument.......

I play guitar......and currently have 4......an 80's vintage Epiphone flying V,an Ibanez, and junk strat copy (from a deceased cousin) and my favorite...my Jackson factory loaded with Seymour Duncan pickups.I play thru Marshall amps.

Anyone else out there have some music ability? ;)

If I weren't an artist, I'd be a musician. I love the piano but never took lessons. Maybe someday.

My son is a natural at it though. His teacher's amazed at how quickly he masters his lessons. (Great, now HE'S got my wasted talent...)

For now I just drum the steering wheel.  :-\
Title: Re: How many of us are musicians?
Post by: TopJedi on June 4, 2003, 11:23 AM
I took piano for a year and a half in my early teens.......my parents and teacher were blown away at how fast I could master soemthing....after only hearing it a couple times. I still have this strange gift to this day......I swear man, give me most any rock song......let me hear it thru 2-3 times and I'll have it down in 20 minutes ;)

I simply got bored with piano......and actually begged my parents to let me drop from the lessons....so I could go back to guitar.

I haven't played in years but I used to play guitar and bass. I sold all of the stuff off about 10 years ago. I have often thought about picking up a cheap guitar to play around with again.

I used to play trumpet from 2nd grade until the end of high school.  For our state competition I ranked 1st for trumpet players in the state of Illinois.  I had a few scholarship offers come my way, but I didn't want to play trumpet anymore.  And in 12 years I haven't played it since graduating from high school.  Wish I could go back in time, because I could be playing for Boston Pops or the Chicago Symphony (something of great stature).

For those who don't know, the Chicago Symphony is probably the best symphony orchestra in America.

In high school I played the tuba in return for bass guitar lessons which never happened .Now I sing for anyone that wants me to.Anything from Death to Danzig.I play a little bass still.I am no virtuoso but can write simple lines for a layout purpose and guitar in a similiar fashion.I prefer to leave the music to the true musicians that I work with.If they don't tell me how to do my job I won't tell them how to do theirs.

Lot more answers for ya' right here Brian:  So, who plays an instrument? (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?board=28;action=display;threadid=1125)   ;)

Piano lessons for about 10 years or so myself, when I was a kid.  Still dabble a bit, but not much...

Ah hell, I went ahead and merged the two topics.  Hopefully that's cool with you Brian - if not, LMK and I'll unmerge them.  Probably a few similar responses in here now, but that's OK.  I also changed the original title on Snively's thread to your title Bri!   ;)

I myself am a vocal singer, for I have not the patience to learn an instrument, but singing is just as challenging, and fun. Im a Tenor, and Ive been one for 4 years, because in middle school, for 2 years, I was a bass. Go figure.

I can sing just about every kind of music except rap, I just refuse to sing rap. I can play the guitar(electric, acustic, bass), and the drums partially, I really havent played drums in a long time.   I've sang for actual performances in shows on stage. If you're from the capital district or from NY period you might have seen me in the Melodies of Christmas choral a couple of times.

Not for me ussually, but that's just because my major in school is Music so chords are a think you have to know really quick for  the class.

Before Istarted taking musci classes though, it was horribly hard for me.

Lots of great replies in this thread.

I am a keyboardist and synth enthusiast.  I took piano lessons for a few years as a child and got involved in electronic music production in my teens.  Currently, I help write jingles and filler music for local radio stations, etc.  I enjoy what I do and the experience I've gained has been great, but it's not something I want to do the rest of my life.  However, music will always have a place in my life.  :)

Just had to bump this thread up (it's been dead a while) since, for the first time in 15 years, I'm actually playing with a band again. It's just a cover band, and even at that, it's really just my friend's band's side project - basically the band consists of the four members of this band (http://www.lamentband.com) and myself. We're doing a Slayer tribute band, and we have a female vocalist. But she can scream/grunt/whatever. Listen to the mp3 samples on his bands website to check out what she sounds like, you won't believe that's a chick. First show coming up next month. It'll be the first time I've been "on stage" since like 1990 when the band I was in did a few opening slots for Pantera at a few small clubs here in the NJ area. They were unknown at the time, and we had like 40 people every night, but being able to meet Phil Anselmo (pre dickhead phase) and Dimebag (and Rex and Paul) was really cool.

Hadn't seen this thread before....

I play:

Bass Guitar
Alto Saxophone
Flute (badly)
Clarinet
Guitar (some)
French Horn (some)
Piano
Keyboards
Harmonica (badly..until I get lessons)

Music is one of my focuses in life, so I guess I've got quite a few instruments to tackle.

I was 1st chair 1st sax in band in middle school, which was pretty cool, but then when HS came, I didn't want to march---at all.

So I picked up bass and've been slapping away ever since. :)

I play the guitar. Not well enough for a band, at least IMO, but no one really wants to hear a bunch of badly-played KISS songs around here, anyway.

If I was into country music, I'd have it made. That ****'s easy to play, plus country is ridiculously huge here. Though the country groupies are just....ugh. :o

I grew up as a huge piano player, almost deciding to major in music in college but then realizing that the profession is way too cutthroat.  I haven't had as much time as I'd like the last couple of years, but just this week actually I bought a $2,000 electric piano, so I can get back into it again.

I actually pretty much paid my way through college as a church pianist and with a jazz band that me and a few buddies had.  Those were awesome times.  I might have actually had more money then than I do now.

I used to play guitar in a band called Next Season when I was in college... kind of a loud screamy hardcore/punk rock/rock n' roll type thing... beats me.

If anyone wants to hear the CD speak up and I'll post it on yousendit.

I started playing the Guitar about 10 years ago but then had a Bass shoved in my hands as my best friend's Hard Rock/Metal band needed someone to fill the shoes. That lasted about 7 years and we broke up. Still some of the best times i've ever had and miss it dearly. These days I just tinker around on Guitar and Bass. I was always more of a "Riff" writer than actual songs but I did write the theme song for my college sketch comedy TV show. If I could do anything i'd love to write jingles and TV theme songs. It sounds corny but it would be a dream come true...
