Title: Batman Begins
Post by: Ben on September 12, 2003, 01:27 AM
Finally, WB makes a decent choice for Bruce Wayne/Batman:
http://www.superherohype.com/batman/index.php?id=113 (http://www.superherohype.com/batman/index.php?id=113)

I'm not much for the comics (really haven't read any but the Hush arc) but I love the first two, maybe three movies. I'd like to see where this one goes, what with Christopher Nolan directing and co-writing.

Here's hoping for the best.  Bale is a magnificent actor, but I just hope that the Batman franchise takes a turn in the right direction.  I don't know, I was always fond of Michael Keaton as Batman.

I agree on Keaton he did a great job with Batman

Any Batman would be better than no Batman.  I must have saw the 1989 one 10 times at the theater (along with Indy Last Crusade) that summer was an awesome Box Office Year...Back to the Future Part II...Ghostbusters II, Uncle Buck, Look Who's Talking, Field of Dreams, Major League, Star Trek V, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Dead Poets Society, Parenthood

Had to go over there just to see what the fella looked like, as I've never heard of him, and am completely unfamiliar with any of his prior film work.  So I guess at this point I can't comment any further than "handsome young fella"...

I'd have to say that Keaton was probably the best Batman so far as well.  Very stoic, detached, and mysterious demeanor seemed to set him apart from his predecessors, Val and George.

So, other than the first 4 movies, and the occasional old Batman reruns on the tube, I'm not too terribly familiar with the Batman franchise in general, and am curious as to what villains are left who might play a role in the next flick.  The only major one that comes to mind still is Scarecrow.  Is he on tap for this one, or are the villains yet to be announced?

On a related note, maybe I'm totally brainfarting on this, but who'd they wind up selecting, if anyone, to play the next Superman?  I recall a lot of drama and rumors floating around on this last year, but haven't heard much of anything about it since then...  What's up with that project and it's status?

Me too! I had no idea ethier.

As for playing Batman, Michael Keaton was the best.  8)  Followed by these other chaps!

Adam West's nipples were REAL, baby. He's my favorite Batman so far. (Clooney's a close second.)

Adam West was good in the TV show version, but Michael Keaton was hands down the BEST Batman ever!  I never would have been able to imagine Michael Keaton being a bad-assss in ANY movie, but he did an awesome job in Batman!

My favorite Batman will always be the Batman from the Batman Animated Series from the early 90's. Damn, I loved that show.

Everything so far points to this being a winner. Christopher Nolan is the best asset. Insomnia and Memento were both fantastic movies. I'm expecting an X-men 2 level of character drama with a noir twist. Can't wait!

The icing on the cape: New Batman movie to hit screens summer 2005 (http://edition.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Movies/03/09/batman.begins/index.html)

Love this line:

You remember Batman don't you? He's the hero who ran off licking his wounds after the utterly disastrous "Batman and Robin" slammed into screens like a lead zeppelin and forced its cast members to repent in the less profitable but more stimulating waters of independent film.

Nice article, thanks DSJ.  Personally, I am really looking forward to this movie.  Batman has always been my favorite comic hero (along with the X-Men), and I hope that this movie lives up to expectations as much as possible.  The best thing about this is I think that DC, the actors, directors, etc. have learned from the past Batman movies.  They know what fans/people want to see, and what they don't.  I kind of like the fact that they are "restarting" the franchise, and I hope that it turns out to be done very well.  From what I have read of interviews of the people involved, they really want to make this a great film.

Also, I'm in the camp that thinks that Keaton is the best Batman of the film versions.  When I first heard he was playing Batman, I thought it was a strange choice, but I ended up really liking him in the role.  The 1989, first Batman, was my favorite of the movies.  I think they steadily declined from there.  I still do enjoy watching the old Adam West Batman on TV Land every so often though, sure its silly, but really that is what it was supposed to be to some extent.  I remember watching the reruns a lot as I was growing up.  Anyways, best of luck to all involved on this film, I hope the new "Batman Begins" can give this franchise a fresh start and we can see more of Bats on the big screen.

Also...from that article, DC really has been missing the boat so far on the "comic" movie surge of the past couple of years.  It seems like Marvel has really been taking the reigns on this so far.

I really hope Mattel doesn't have the license to make the figures from this flick. I'd hate to see it treated like Spider-Man 2 or Mattel's current Bat line.

But, I'll probably just enjoy the flick and say 'to hell with the merchandise'.
I hope Bale plays Wayne/Batman as the borderline psychopath Keaton did.

In a recent issue of Wizard they did a sidebar on why Bale was the perfect Batman.  I don't remember the whole thing off hand, but it was based on his other acting parts.  The kid who witnessed something horrifying (The Last Emperor?) to pyschotic (American Pyscho) to tough and brooding (that recent Dragon movie with him and McCouneghy).  They pretty much nailed it.  All those sound like Batman to me.

I hate the name but the cast is top notch.  I don't want to get my hopes up, but this could be great.

Courtesy of a post by MisterPL over at GH....there appears to be pics up over at the Batman Begins site of the new Batmobile.  It is a little different take than in the past, but the reactions I have read so far seem pretty positive on it.  I've really got high hopes for this movie...we need a good Batman movie again.  You can check out his new wheels here:

Someone on another board said Batman could be using some of Wayne Enterprises military vehicles early on, thus the "rugged" look.  I expect that if more movies are made, then the Batmobile will get more "sleeker"  It does look like the Batmobile from Dark Knight Returns, though.
Title: The Batmobile!
Post by: MisterPL on March 31, 2004, 01:54 PM
From what I've read, this is "the Tumbler," one of many experimental prototypes Wayne's company has been dabbling with in his absense. Upon his return he chastises the management for redirecting his father's company toward military purposes, then uses the non-lethal technology in his arsenal as Batman.  ;D

I can't wait to see this in action. Reportedly it does all its own stunts, requiring no CGI. Should be pretty sweet.

Good God, that's the ugliest thing I've ever seen!  Probably not going to help the franchise using crap like that in the next flick...  I wonder if that thing transforms, or does anything interesting to justify that bizarro look there.  Not cool IMO.
Title: Re: The new Batmobile.. thumbs up!
Post by: MisterPL on June 9, 2004, 06:48 PM
I liked it when I first saw it weeks ago, I like it even more now that I've seen it in person.

As a lifelong Batfan, I have to say this is my new favorite Batmobile. It's the most realistic version yet. It doesn't insult my intelligence with cheesy paint jobs, neon lights, or open canopies that scream "Shoot here!"

Aside from purely aesthetic tastes, I really don't understand why this thing is causing such a division among critics. To me the Batmobile should be function over form. Considering this is an origin story for Batman AND his car (and a bunch of other elements), it's possible he might put a Bat-touch on it at a later date. But I sure as hell don't want to see Bruce Wayne detailing it in the Batcave so it appeals to chicks when he should be out kicking the Scarecrow's ass.

Not a fan.  Maybe after seeing the movie, but it looks like something that was cobbled together out of sheet metal for the local soap box derby (to date myself horribly).

It's not at all aerodynamic.  Sure, it can drive through a brick  wall, maybe at 6 mph (yeah, i've read the release on its top speed).  And it may lack the open canopy for shooting practice, those front tires just scream pick me, pick me for disabling the car.  Oh sure, Bats may be fine inside, but after you disable it, you can do rocket practice at the car until it does blow up.  Real good.

And what are those on the back?  Xterra styled roof racks?  Bats going camping, or what?

Gaudy decals aside on the old ones, this one screams Humvee and I halfway expect Ahnold to come out of it proclaiming he's my worst nightmare.

If the first half of the script I've read is any indication, Batman IS getting the Spidey treatment (minus the Power Rangers villain masquerading as Green Goblin).

The Tumbler WAS designed for Marines. I can go into specifics, but I might be going into spoiler territory. I know if I decided to become a millionaire vigilante and had this in my Applied Sciences Department, I wouldn't feel the need to overhaul a Lincoln with Batfins instead.

And keep in mind, those specs (http://www.batman-on-film.com/bbimages/tumblerspec1.jpg) are for the real-life vehicle, not its movie counterpart. While the wheels may not be bullet proof for practical filming purposes, I doubt the movie specs would allow for such an easy target. We'll just have to wait for the DK book to be sure.  ;)

I've confidence in Christopher Nolan to turn out a solid movie. Insomnia and Memento were both amazing with a tone that should fit Batman perfectly. It's like if the age-old "Frank Darabont is working on the new Star Wars" rumor came true - the best choice for the property they could probably make. That's one of the reasons I'm waiting for the movie to judge whether I like this vehicle or not.

More than likely they've planned on rewinding the Batman story far enough that we'll see a more stylish Batmobile introduced in later movies.

The best Batmobile to date IMO is:

I actually kind of liked the new "Begins" teaser/trailer we saw during the Superbowl.  I'm looking forward to seeing this movie, and hopefully it will revitalize the franchise a little and get back to the "darker" Batman that is more true to the character.  To be honest, I wasn't sure at first, but that new Batmobile is kind of growing on me a little.  It sounds "cool" in the trailer anyways :).

I know there is already a thread for suerhero flicks, but I had to start a thread on Batman Begins.  This was an absolutely incredible film!  To me, it was quite possibly the best superhero movie ever made.  Bale was perfect as an intimidating, disturbed, and morally complex Batman.  His voice when playing the Dark Knight was intense, and the film had a flow and pacing that hardly had me noticing how long it was.  Between this and ROTS, we are having a landmark summer for movies!
