Title: Major DVD Release List for Summer/Fall '03
Post by: Virex on July 14, 2003, 10:06 AM
Hey guys, with the announcement of the Matrix Reloaded DVD today, I thought I'd start a thread here to keep track of the major DVDs that will be released between now and Christmas.  For the most part, these will be titles that either I'm interested in myself, or ones I feel you guys might be interested in.

I will keep this list updated for new titles as they are announced, and will delete titles as they are released.

Please note: Titles not being released in their original aspect ratio will not be included in this list.   ;D

(Also, for those who like to pre-order online, I'm going to start hot-linking some of the major-major titles to Deep Discount DVD (http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/index.cfm).  I have no vested interest in DDD, but I've used them a few times and feel that their prices and service is top-notch.)

That DVD on Duel. Is that the one with Dennis Weaver by Steven Spielberg about that psychotic truck driver?

That's the one.  With Duel and Indy finally released this year, pretty much everything that Spielberg's directed will now be on DVD.

The Breakfast Club: High School Yearbook Collection
Sixteen Candles: High School Yearbook Collection
Weird Science: High School Yearbook Collection  MAYBE

I believe these three titles are going to be released in a "High School Yearbook Collection" box set, which should be available for right around $30, while the individual discs should be right around $15 each.  So, instead of buying the two separates for $30, get the set and get Weird Science for free!  :)

UPDATE:  Here's a listing for the three-pack on Amazon:

3 Movie Brat Pack Set (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000A98ZQ/qid=1058200537/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/002-2955834-7244809?v=glance&s=dvd)

(Glad I sold my old Sixteen Candles and Weird Science discs for about $70 total earlier this year!)   8)

Just last week I checked what was coming out and wrote them down on my calender.  Good to have a thread here for easy access.  Thanks Virex.

Man, September 2nd is going to be an expensive day.  I'll be picking up CSI:2nd season, all three John Hughes movies, and PCU.  That's a $100+ day  :o

In addition to those, I'll be picking up:

-Daredevil (Possibly)
-Casablanca
-NL Vacation
-LOTR:TTT theatrical and extended
-Simpsons: 3rd season
-Scarface
-A Mighty Wind
-Fargo
-A Family Guy vol 2
-NL Christmas Vacation
-Indiana Jones (duh!!, who isnn't picking this one up?)
-Finding Nemo
-T3
-X2

There are a few that I'm probably missing, but damn I need to either hit the lottery or get another job.

If that's the case then put me down for a 3 pack...Weird Science is a good flick, I never much cared for Sixteen Candles...$10 a piece is a steal

And, from now on everyone picture me talking like the people from Fargo, you betcha!

Yeah, there was an interview that Jerry Seinfeld gave recently where he mentioned that he was going through archival material for an eventual DVD release.

I'm guessing that we'll see "Seinfeld: The Complete First and Second Seasons" on DVD sometime in the middle of next year.

I want to preface the following by saying "I don't give a **** about Battlestar Galactica, but I know some people here do, and I thought that they might like to see it."

From The Digital Bits (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/):

Yep... that is Universal's final artwork for Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Epic Series and the theatrical version of the Battlestar Galactica pilot episode. Both are due on 10/21 (SRP $119.98 for the series and $19.98 for the movie). According to the excellent TV Shows On DVD website, The Complete Epic Series will include all 24 episodes of the series in full frame video and newly remixed Dolby Digital 5.1 audio (2.0 stereo will also be included). You'll also get "insight into the making" of Battlestar Galactica, the Creation of Battlestar Galactica: An Interview with creator Glen A. Larson featurette, deleted scenes, audio commentary for selected episodes by cast and crew members, the Visual Effects with John Dykstra featurette, the Sci-Fi Special: Making of the Show featurette, the Composing the Music: Stu Phillips and Glen A. Larson featurette, production notes, an interactive game trailer and a sneak preview of the new Sci-Fi Channel Battlestar Galactica mini-series. As you can see, it also comes in special packaging molded to look like the faceplate from a Cylon Warrior.

I want to preface the following by saying "I don't give a **** about Battlestar Galactica, but I know some people here do, and I thought that they might like to see it."

Thanks Virex!  As far as I recall (from my childhood), I'm one of the people who DO give a crap about it (along with the ol' Buck Rodgers too), so I've been interested in seeing what they have to offer when these DVD sets are eventually released.  Looks pretty good so far!  I'll probalby bite.  Happy Halloween to me!   :-*

There is a new BG movie in the works correct?  I barely remember BG or BR, sorta before my time.  I watched but it barely kept my interest if I recall. :-*

Battlestar Galactica & Buck Rogers were good for there time. When the Space Channel up here aired BG, I sat through 5 mins of it. That all I could stand. What was worse is when they came out with Galactica 80.  :o

I have not seen BR since it aired & I would like to see it again. It was not to bad a show.

The original Buck Rogers, Larry "Buster" Crabbe, Erin Gray & Gil Gerard.

That movie creeped me out as a kid. I have a thing about semi trucks behind me at night from that flick. Non the less, I like it!

Bad news, Dale.  This, from a Universal website:

For those that are planning to buy one (or more) of the new Vacation DVDs, here's something you might want to be aware of:

Quote
Rounding out this week's news, it's good news for fans of that kooky Griswold clan. Just in time for the holidays, the family that just never learns not to take a vacation is getting their own gift set. Featuring all four of the much-beloved National Lampoon flicks - Vacation, European Vacation, Christmas Vacation and Vegas Vacation - The Ultimate Vacation Collection features all of the new special edition versions as well as a remastered edition of Vegas Vacation in anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround (there are no new extras.) The set will be available on (October 7th) and retails for $59.95, and all of the four Vacation flicks will also be available separately for $19.95 a pop, including the Vegas adventure.

From today's DVD File update (http://dvdfile.com/software/dvd-video/archive/2003/07_25.html).

I was already planning on buying the separate versions of Vacation and Christmas Vacation, and I've thought about picking up European Vacation a few times, so I'll probably get this box instead.

Looks like I'll be buying that box set.  I'm in the same boat as you Virex.  I was going to buy Vacation and Christmas Vacation and not bother with European and Vegas.  The wife loves European and Vegas isn't the best but it does have its moments, so the box set it is.

I'm just glad it doesn't come out on the 2nd.

Actually, it looks like that box set is coming out on October 7th--the same day the new widescreen Christmas and Vegas Vacation discs are released.  That makes more sense to me, and I'll be editing that out next.

DVD File has a history of getting dates wrong for things.

Oh, and DVD Empire already has the box up for pre-order for about $48:

Vacation Giftset (http://http://www.dvdempire.com/Exec/v4_item.asp?item_id=545944&olduserid=00000254613071&nu=1&loginCheck=67421447270025020031100&userid=00000254613071&redir=1)

Since the individual releases are going to be around $15 each, buying the box set is pretty much like getting one of them for free, if you were to buy three of the separate releases.  Not a bad deal.

Thanks for the scoop(s) again Virex.  That Vacation box set looks pretty cool, but the only movie I HAVE to have in my collection is the original Vacation.  I'm not sure if I need the other three, though I found them pretty funny as well.  I suppose I'll just hold off for a while, and if I catch the box set on a big sale, I'll go ahead and snag it.

Keep on keepin' us posted on the DVD news front!  I'm diggin' it!   :-*

Question: There's still no new releases planned for any further Gladiator or Saving Private Ryan DVDs, is there?  Thanks!

Yeah, you know, I'm already getting Vacation and Christmas Vacation, and I've always been curious about European Vacation, so what the hell.  Like I said, if you were to buy three of the individual versions, it'd be about the same amount of money as buying the box, so why not?  (Kind of similar to the John Hughes High School Reunion box deal).

Question: There's still no new releases planned for any further Gladiator or Saving Private Ryan DVDs, is there?  Thanks!

Gladiator is actually, getting ready to go to a cheaper, single-disc version here pretty soon (nothing to get excited about, it's just a truncated version of the current disc).  Is there something wrong with the current two-disc version?  That's one of the best-selling, most-loaded DVDs you can buy.

EDIT:  And actually, if you're putting off buying the current, two-disc Gladiator, for whatever reason, I would probably go ahead and pick it up now, as it's going out of print in favor of the one-disc-er.  But that's just me.

Nothing for SPR at this time, although I'm going to guess that we'll see a two- or three-disc set for that one within the next two or three years.  Nothing this year, though.  (Next year, we should also be getting a fairly nice Schindler's List DVD, by the way.)

My childhood was chock full of viewing of the classic Sci-Fi film Star Wars.  One of me and my buddies nagging questions always was "Where is the Tusken Luke can see in his binocs???"  My know it all friend swore you could see him standing by the Bantha.  It wasn't until I got widescreen videos did I realize how utterly dumb the whole concept is and how wrong my know it all friend actually was

Oh, if you buy Solaris and Daredevil at Target, you recieve $5 off, for a total of $30 for both.

You know, I didn't like and understand widescreen myself, until the Sci-Fi Channel aired the original trilogy in letterbox around Thanksgiving 1995.  At that time, I realized how much information I was missing with my "regular" Star Wars VHS tapes--in fact, the scene that Scott mentioned earlier, with the Tusken Raider, was one of the ones that finally made sense in widescreen.

I was so impressed, that for Christmas a month later, my mom got me the widescreen THX box set, that I still have today.  It's been all widescreen ever since.  :)

StarWars.com did a fairly simple-yet-informative comparison between the two formats when the Episode II DVD came out last year:

StarWars.com Widescreen Vs. Fullscreen Comparison (http://www.starwars.com/episode-ii/feature/20020925/)

Here are some of the better examples, which are quite stunning in illustrating the difference:

I'll close by saying that liking fullscreen makes Baby Jesus cry.  :P

Anyway, good news:

The Indiana Jones set, previously set for release on November 4th, has now apparently been bumped up to October 21st by Paramount Home Video.

Everybody's guessing that they moved it up so that it won't have to compete with Finding Nemo, which was just announced for a November 4th release a week or two ago.

As much as I want to get that set, I don't want to do it if there's another Indy flick coming in the not so distant future...  They'll obviously release another, more comprehensive DVD boxset to include Indy 4 later on, and I don't want to get stuck with a whole duplicate set of the first 3.  And before anyone says "Just get the set in a few months, and then just buy the regular Indy 4 DVD separately when it comes out." - I'll point out that it doesn't work that way in my world!  My borderline OCD causes me to need the biggest, best, and most comprehensive all-encompasing set that there is, or ever will be!  End of story.   :P   :-\

So I'll have to see how things look.  If I can snag this upcoming set for cheap (<$40), and I find out Indy 4 ain't gonna happen for another few years, I'll probably go ahead and bite the bullet and pick one up.  But I'll be annoyed in doing so, mind you!   :-*

Oy, vey!  Couldn't imagine passing on Indiana Jones on the off-chance that a "better" box-set might be coming, in Fall 2005 at the very, very earliest (for the record, I don't believe we'll see any "better" Indiana Jones DVDs until the next format comes along).  Waited too long (six years) for Dr. Jones on DVD for that.

At any rate, the major e-tailers are taking pre-orders on the set for right around $45 right now, so I'm imagining that we should see it on sale for somewhere between $35-40 at one or more of the bigger retailers when it comes out in October.

Oh, and Scott?  Shaddup.

My OCD tells me that Season 2 of 24 should be released as a boxed set, and not in a quad-fold box so it will fit in a DVD tower. I agree with my OCD.

Having said that, I got Antitrust for $3.49 tonight. 25th Ann. Halloween was released today, but I'm passing on that.

Okay--The Digital Bits (http://thedigitalbits.com) is reporting in their Rumor Mill that X2 is now slated for a November 25th release date, and that The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen will be coming the week after, on December 2nd.  Also confirmed is a October 21st release for 28 Days Later, which some folks here were interested in.

In other news, TDB also has some details on what's going to be included on the extra disc in the Indiana Jones Box (not quoted because it's harder to read, IMO):

"Indiana Jones: Making the Trilogy - Documentarians raided the Lucasfilm archives for an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at movie-making history. More than two dozen new interviews were conducted with the talented cast and crew of the Indiana Jones trilogy - some of whom were interviewed for the first time since the films were originally released. Making the Trilogy is a completely unique tour through the rough-and-tumble world of the films’ creation. Complete with never-before-seen footage, outtakes, screen tests, production drawings and photographs direct from the Lucasfilm archives, it's the most detailed exploration of these classic films ever produced.

The Light and Magic of Indiana Jones - The visual effects wizards from Industrial Light and Magic bring new insight into how they created the unique world of Indiana Jones. Their groundbreaking techniques in visual and mechanical effects came in an era before computer-generated effects existed, offering unique challenges and spectacular results. ILM technicians explain how miniatures, matte paintings, morphing and more made Indy's spectacular quests and supernatural adventures into unforgettable film experiences.

Taking an in-depth adventure in sound, The Sound of Indiana Jones joins Academy Award®-winning sound designer Ben Burtt as he reveals the crucial role that sound effects and editing played in the Indiana Jones films, while also providing an aural history behind some of the most talked-about scenes.

The Stunts of Indiana Jones goes behind the scenes to witness the intense coordination required by the entire production team to make certain a death-defying scene looks convincing on film. This documentary reveals how the Indy films paid homage to the past and were pivotal to the future of heart-stopping, perilous movie stunts.

Venture on a musical journey with John Williams as he reminisces about his collaboration with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas and The Music of Indiana Jones. Viewers will learn how one of the most iconic movie themes of all-time, The Raiders March, was conceived and gain insight into how the music uniquely compliments the theme and mood of each adventure.

Original theatrical teasers and trailers for the Indiana Jones movies, along with a trailer for the Indiana Jones and The Emperor's Tomb video game from LucasArts.

Exclusive DVD-ROM access to exclusive Indiana Jones content, available through a special DVD-ROM web site. An additional link to the Indianajones.com web site (the official site for Indiana Jones fans) will offer daily features and updates on the upcoming Indiana Jones 4."

Great news for all you fans of classic 80's cartoons - GIJoe season sets are coming!!

According to Quick Kick Theater (http://qktheatre.com/news/):

Quote
Per Joe Glover (AKA Flint wo2) via Sgt. Recondo: "Joe talked to a Kid Rhino rep [at Wizard World Chicago] and got 'absolute confirmation' that the season #1 G.I.Joe 'toons will come out in 2 parts. The first half of season #1 (about 27 episodes or so) will be out in late October and will cost about $59. The second half of season #1 (again, about 27 episodes or whatever) will be out in January 2004 and will also cost about $59. Then, Rhino plans on having season #2 available in late summer 2004 - especially if the season #1 sets sell well. There is a possibility of a promotional 'extra' being sold with the DVD sets, such as a figure or whatever. The 'extra' is all unconfirmed though."

Looks like a release date of 10/7/03...

add the XMas Story Figures which will probably be out at the same time and yowza what a year!

Side story (which I posted at GH last year ;))...

Did you ever have something that you loved, be at a band, a TV show, or a movie, and you thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. Well that movie for me was A Christmas Story, our family watched that at the theater when it first came out and loved it. We then got a video copy and watched it every year while we opened presents. I always told my friends they should see it...then it all snowballed. It started showing up on cable and it has gotten to the point that it is on 24 hours a day on TBS. It is getting to the point of being run into the ground and everyone loves it as their movie

I still love the movie to no end, it is one of my top 10 favorite movies of perhaps all time. We often quote lines for different events throughout the year, we sing Jingle Bells like they do...part of me wishes it was still my little secret, selfish for sure, but my little secret is gone

I think you probably identified with Peter Billingsley, in looks, while you were a kid, and that's why you're stuck on it to this day.

Man, it is scary...I need to go raid my folk's photo stash anyway to get some shots of me opening some SW swag back in the day...I've been trying the last few minutes to find a recent pic of PB but to no avail.  I also didn't know he was buds with Vince Vaughn and John Favreau, cool beans

Yeah, a quick Image Search on Google netted two crappy pictures of PB, the least-worst of which is above, and a whole bunch of scans of the old Christmas Story DVD and VHS cover.  Other than that, nothin'.

Had no idea he was a Swinger, too, but then again, all I wanted was a pic of the kid, not his entire life story. . .  :P

Should be a nice, two-disc special edition, although it hasn't been announced yet.

Nice--I'll add it to the list (already have a "2004 releases" section, anyway).  But isn't it really early to have a street-date for this thing?  I mean, that's like six months away.

And here's the track-listing for the "old" DVD, Touring Band 2000, for comparison:

---------------------------------------
Long Road
Corduroy
Grievance
Animal
God's Dice
Evacuation
Given to Fly
Dissident
Nothing as it Seems
Even Flow
Lukin
Not for You
Daughter
Untitled
MFC
Thin Air
Leatherman
Betterman
Nothingman
Insignificance
I Got Sh.t
RVM
Wishlist
Jeremy
Evolution
Don't Go
Parting Ways
Rocking in the Free World
------------------------------------

So, if I'm seeing everything correctly, looks like there's only eight tracks which will be duplicated between the two DVDs, most of which are live staples:  Corduroy, Even Flow, Given to Fly, Wishlist, Not for You, Jeremy, Insignificance, and Betterman.

And, it looks like they're adding a few tracks which were conspicuously absent from the first one, too.

I wish there would have been a track from "my" concert (Oklahoma City), but oh well.  Looks to be another fine PJ DVD.

(Now playing:  PJ, "Off He Goes", No Code)--before I read Scott's PJ news, too.)  :)

Some positive news for Dale, and anyone else that was looking forward to (and hasn't yet gotten) Duel:

Right on! I'm going to get me Duel.   8)
That movie creeped me out as a kid. I have a thing about semi trucks behind me at night from that flick. Non the less, I like it!

Bad news, Dale.  This, from a Universal website:

Quote
DUEL has been removed from the August 2003 DVD program Effective 7/24/2003

No Duel for you!

No reason was given for the delay/cancellation.

From today's DVD File update:

"Also, an update on the strange case of Steven Spielberg's Duel. As killer truck fans already know. this one has been announced twice and then pulled at the last minute...only this time, some have snuck through. Originally scheduled for release this week, some retailers received their copies and weren't notified of the delay before it was too late (or decided to sell them anyway), so if you are lucky you may be able to find a copy out their somewhere. According to sources at Universal, this second delay is due to issues surround Spielberg's approval of the set and the transfer, and in any case, the title is not cancelled, just postponed...again. Watch this space for more."

http://dvdfile.com/software/dvd-video/archive/2003/08_14.html

It'll be out eventually.  Universal still sucks.

Post by: Virex on August 15, 2003, 01:19 PM
Yeah, those auctions are nuts--usually ending at over $100 USD.  Wow.

Well, that's what happens when the studio pulls something after they've already pressed and sent out the discs.  A similar thing happened with the first release of the 1986 version of Little Shop of Horrors a few years ago, although, in that case, the recalled version featured an alternate ending which didn't have clearance to be on there.  So they pulled it, and re-issued it months later, without the alternate ending.  Of course, the result is, the first version is one of the rarer DVDs out there, and still goes for quite a bit on Ebay, IIRC.

I don't imagine Duel to be quite the same situation, and I would think that the "final" version is going to be pretty much the same as this recalled version, so I wouldn't sweat this one too much.

Dale, if you're more interested in the Duel situation, you might check out this thread at the Home Theater Forum, although I'll warn you that it's thirteen-pages and 372 replies long.   :o

Y'all won't believe this...Duel cancelled again! (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=151630&perpage=30&display=&pagenumber=1)

Interesting stuff.  Universal still sucks--someway, somehow, they always seem to botch every big Spielberg-related title they have. . .

Here's a nice review from DVD Talk for the new Vacation: Special Edition coming out next week, for those like Matt #1 that are interested:

http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=7241

Here's a sampling:

Quote
Watching the film on the 20th Anniversary DVD is almost like watching it again for the first time. The picture is remarkably sharp and vibrant, and the anamorphic widescreen presentation along with the uncut, unedited dialog give the movie a freshness that is very palpable. I've seen Vacation roughly 803,284 times in the last twenty years, and this DVD is the most fun I've had watching it since the first time.

There are so many classic lines, funny moments, and hilarious scenarios to mention. If you're a Vacation fan, the decision to purchase the 20th Anniversary DVD is a no-brainer. You simply must have it. If you've never seen the movie, or perhaps if you've only been exposed to the sub-par (and often substandard) sequels, the DVD also comes highly recommended. It's relatively inexpensive as far as DVDs go, and you are definitely getting your money's worth. For hardcore, longtime fans of the film, the commentary alone makes this DVD a must-buy. For the sexist pig reading this review, the DVD is even worth it just to see how amazingly hot Dana Barron has become, or how amazingly hot Christie Brinkley still is.

So, looking good.  I believe that Circuit City will have this next Tuesday for $12.99, which is the best price that I've heard of yet.

And, there's also the Vacation box, containing new, widescreen versions of all the movies, which will be debuting October 7th, for those that want to pick up all of them.  It should be in the $40-50 range.

Thanks, Matt--I will.   8)

And here's some more for ya:

Early word has it that Circuit City will have The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers: Theatrical Version on sale for $14.99 when it comes out on the 26th.

Nice price, and we're still waiting on "official" prices on it from Best Buy and Target, among others.  Someone else mentioned in another thread that Wal-Mart will be selling it for $17.99 that week, but they're usually good about having the "everyday lowest price", so I wouldn't be surprised to see them selling it for less than $14.99 that week. . .

Well, we're moving rapidly towards the 20th century now here in Winnipeg.  Two Best Buy stores finally opened, so maybe some competition for pricing will finally arise.

Everyone is posting $26.99 as the price up here for TTT, so maybe I can save a buck or two finally.  I'm still not sure whether I should buy now or wait for the more-multi-disc set ::)  I guess by now and get the 18 disc complete set in a year and a half.
Title: Re: Major DVD Release List for Summer/Fall '03

Skipped over this one in my last reply:

Very interested!  Thanks for the review info V!  I'll definitely be picking this one up.  Just undecided as to whether it'll be in the boxset, or by itself just yet...

Well, the way I see it, it depends on two things:  How long you want to wait, and how many of the other three DVDs you think you might want to buy in the future.

Now, myself, I've been waiting on a widescreen Vacation for years, so a few more weeks isn't going to be that big of a deal.

The other question is a little trickier.  I know that I'll definitely be picking up the new Vacation and Christmas Vacation special editions.  That much is certain.  But like I mentioned in an earlier reply, I don't really give a crap about Vegas Vacation one way or the other (I think I saw plenty of that movie when I had to sit through the trailer for it a dozen times back when the Special Editions came out in '97).  So, I guess it all hinges on European Vacation, which I've only seen a brief amount of.  I think the general perception is that it ain't that great, but there are some funny parts, and the DVD itself, in terms of transfer and extras is supposed to be decent.  Plus, there's just something about having complete collections of things that I like, so I think I'm leaning towards the box set.

Look at the prices.  A quick check on DVD Price Search (http://dvdpricesearch.com) turns up the following:

Vacation Special Edition - lowest price $9.99
European Vacation - lowest price $9.89
Christmas Vacation Special Edition - lowest price $13.99
Vegas Vacation (new) - lowest price $13.99
Vacation Giftset - lowest price $37.99

So, the singles are going for $10-15 on average.  Let's say that the box, when it comes out, will be between $40-45.  If you know you're getting the Vacation disc, and are lukewarm on the other three, then it might be hard to justify spending another thirty bucks on titles that you aren't all that excited about.

Let's say you're definitely getting two of the four--you're already spending thirty bucks, right there, and for another ten or fifteen, you can have the other two flicks.

Of course, if you're buying three of the separates, you might as well go ahead and buy the box anyway, since you'd be spending the same amount of money.  Buying the box is essentially a "buy three, get one free" deal.

Of course, Matt, you could always buy the first one this week, watch it, pick up the box when it comes out in October, and get rid of your extra Vacation pretty easily--you could give it as a cheap stocking-stuffer for Christmas, or you might even be able to trade it for a Star Wars figure or two, or something.

Okay, I'm done.  I don't know why in the world I just wrote an essay about how to best purchase some Chevy Chase films, but, there you go.

Damn!  Mikey D stole my own thunder, out of my very own thread!  Wow, check out what Mikey D did!

Don't let it happen again!  Hey, man, thanks for the info!  :D

I will say that I already had X2 down for November 25, and that I had T3 down for November 18, so I was only a week off there.  But, hey, I'd rather have it a week sooner than a week later.

Anyway, thanks Mikey.

Deleted today's releases--anybody get anything interesting?--and slightly corrected T3.

And the other day, I added a few more releases for the fourth quarter, and I added hyperlinks to Deep Discount DVD for a ton of titles.

Speaking of which:

Do any of you (four) guys reading the thread find the links to DDD helpful, in the list itself?

It's almost a moot point now, since I've added the links to most of the titles already, but I'm just curious.  I haven't received any feedback about it at all, and while I don't mind doing it, it does take up quite a bit of time, and if nobody's using the links, I certainly don't need to be spending my time putting them in there.

Anyway, someone give me some honest feedback, please.  Anyone using the links to DDD?  Either way is fine--like I said, I'm just curious.

Thanks.

Cool.  That's all I needed to know.  I've only ordered two DVDs from them (and that was months ago), so when I say "getting any use from", I don't necessarily mean "are you ordering everything from them?"--but more like even just using them for the cover art, or to get an idea of what the price will be, etc.

Great minds think alike huh, Matt?  ;)

I'm like you, I love movies and DVDs and peruse dvdtalk and HTF everyday - although I'm not actually registered at either one (which I might do someday) - so I'm pretty up to date on what's coming out, what got canceled and when coverart is released ;)

I may have clicked on one of the links for a movie that I didn't know much about just to get an idea, but for the most part I generally don't use them.  I do appreciate the effort though and am glad the option is there in case I need it someday.

BTW, this thread and the Marvel Legends thread are probably two of most favorite on the entire board.

All right--updated the list with a few minor November and December releases, and linkified a few more.

As for tomorrow's releases, it looks like the biggest two are going to be (obviously) The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers: Theatrical Edition and The Simpsons: The Complete Third Season.

Circuit City looks to have the lowest overall price on Two Towers at $14.99 - although Wal-Mart might be beating it.  (And, as a reminder, it's going to be available in both the widescreen and fullscreen versions, so get the correct one.)

Best Buy has the Simpsons for $33.99 tomorrow, which, in and of itself, is the lowest advertised price, but they'll also give you another $10 off if you buy Family Guy: Seasons 1 & 2, Futurama Volume One, King of the Hill: The Complete First Season, or one of the first two seasons of The Simpsons along with it.  They all sell separately for $33.99.  So, if you need to catch up on those older sets, that might be the best way to go.

Big week next week!

Title: Re: Major DVD Release List for Summer/Fall '03
Post by: Virex on August 26, 2003, 08:16 AM
I don't post this meaning to confuse anyone here, but as more of a heads-up:

NEXT WEEK--Best Buy will be giving away the Dark City DVD for free, when you buy the Two Towers DVD for $17.99, along with a 16-pack of Duracell AA or AAA batteries for $8.99.  This starts next Sunday, 8/31, and runs through Saturday, 9/6.

So, if you can hold off on Two Towers for a few days, and need to buy some batteries anyway, this might be a deal worth waiting for.

All right, kids, here's a review from DVD File for the X2 DVD, nearly three months before its due in stores.   :o

Quote
Video - 4.5/5
Audio - 5/5
Extras - 4.5/5
Rom - .5/5
Value - 4.5/5

http://dvdfile.com/software/review/dvd-video_7/x2.html

How 'bout that?

The Digital Bits was also supposed to have a review up for it yesterday, but Bill Hunt updated, saying that he was still going through the extras.  So, apparently, it's a loaded disc.  So, they'll have it up after Monday, and I'll post a link then.

Okay, guys, for everyone interested in the three "new" John Hughes DVDs (The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and Weird Science) this week:

(http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000A98ZQ.01._PE25_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg)(http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000A98ZP.01._PE25_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg)(http://images.bestbuy.com/BestBuy_US/images/products/5279/5279067.jpg)(http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00008438V.01._PE25_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg)

Best Buy has the individual discs at $12.99 each, which is pretty much the cheapest they are anywhere.

However, according to their website, the three-pack is selling for $39.99.

3 Movie Brat Pack (3pc) : (Ws Sub) - DVD (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1320848&type=product)

Now, when you can buy the three individual discs for less than the box, that kind of defeats the purpose of the box, doesn't it?

Meanwhile, Amazon still has the three-pack for $29.98:

High School Reunion Collection (The Breakfast Club / Sixteen Candles / Weird Science) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000A98ZQ/qid=1062337944/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-2955834-7244809?v=glance&s=dvd)

(Plus, Amazon's doing free shipping on orders over $25 right now.)

So, if you only want one of the three, I'd say pick it up at Best Buy this week.

If you want two, well, you could get them at Best Buy for around $27-28 total, or you could spend a couple more bucks and get the three-pack from Amazon.

If you want all three, obviously Amazon is the way to go.

(By the way, for anyone expecting full-blown special editions, these discs are supposed to be quite un-remarkable, as far as DVDs go.  Although they sport new anamorphic widescreen transfers, and SC and WS have had their original theatrical soundtracks restored, the only extras to be found on these things are their trailers, apparently.  Of course, ultimately, the movie is the most-important thing, and these releases are the best these movies have looked and sounded since they were in the theatres twenty years ago--just don't expect any supplements, that's all.)

Picked up Family Guy Volume 2.

What's up with WalMart's DVD prices? I was at Target this morning, and their new releases were the typical 14-16 bucks. Went over to WalMart, and everything was marked at 19.99, even movies that were in the 14-16 dollar range just a few days ago. Either someone screwed the pooch on that one, or WalMart jacked up their prices...

Walmart is a ripoff on newer DVD's.  I buy all of mine at either Circuit City or Deep Discount DVD.  BTW, I just picked up "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind"  this past weekend.  Excellent. On a sidenote,  for anyone who has a BJ's store near them, you can alot of the times pick up new releases sometimes a week in advance.

Well, I bought TTT at Midnight at Super Wal Mart, then the next morning it was about $14.99, so I got the difference. I know they price match ad's.

Wal Mart has been the cheapest place for 24: Season 2 yet, at $48.84. Amazon is $48.99, DDD at $51.29, Target and Circuit City have it for $54.99.

I don't normally buy from Wal Mart, but I noticed they had the cheapest price online aside from Amazon, and only this morning I came to find out they had 24: Season 2 for $48.84 at the actual store itself.

Due to some technical difficulties (like the fact that a certain somebody mistakenly deleted his own account here  :P), we're closing this thread down at the request of Virex, so he can start a new one (that he's able to edit) under his new account...

So please continue on with all the wonderful DVD goodness in Virex's new thread Major DVD Release List for Fall '03 - Mach 2 (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?board=28;action=display;threadid=2614)

Word of warning...  For anyone interested, if you manage to bring up the box that says "Delete User Account" in your profile, just click NO!   ;)   :-*
