Title: 2008 UGH "1st Day of Issue" Promotion
Post by: JACKOFTRADZE on February 20, 2008, 12:31 PM
Just when you thought you were safe...UGH is back and this time it's a FOIL STICKER!!!!

I thought Hasbro said in a recent Q&A that they bagged the UGH promotion for 2008 but according to RS all 1st issue figures will sport a "1st Day of Issue" sticker. See article  below:

http://www.rebelscum.com/story/front/TF2008_This_Years_UGH_112622.asp

This almost seems like a waste of time. Our carded collector friends will have a new nightmare on their hands with variants to chase down. This feels a little too Hot Wheels to me and to an opener , this is one we do not have to worry about.

So is it a Yeah or Nay?

It's an 'ugh...'

I really couldn't care less, I'm not gonna get too freaked out about it. I have enough to worry about this year.   :P

This is way beyond hot wheels.  They have their chase cars clearly labeled and not offered during that year on another car.  One a month.  Simple, easy, straightforward.  This is a cash grab that is blatant.

Nay.

I just want one, so basically nay.

I never knew it was that straight forward with HW's program.

Good call, this is a cheap cash grab on Hasbro's part. At least the coins were gold a real point of difference is nice. I usually do not not first run figures because they have the most paint flaws.

If this is going to be on ALL of the stuff shipping to the stores for the 7/26 merchandise push then, ok, whatever.

This concept is rather silly IMHO. Stores like TRU are going to over-order the heck out of these two Wave 1 assortments so they'll have the "1st Day Issue" packaging versions for quite some time.

I'm not going to go crazy and collect both packaging versions. I'll get whatever I can on the 26th and if I miss a figure, then "oh well" - I'm not going to go crazy for a foil logo and a sticker.

And imagine if it's on EVERYTHING that's supposed to be available that day... not just figures, but ships, etc. Yeah, I can just see buying an AT-TE for the first issue sticker...

Nay for me.

UGH was stupid the first time around, and it's even moreso now...  Hasbro really does nothing with these promos but attract the truly undesireable element to the hobby, and that's a shame.  I don't think it really beefs up sales much, and half the time I think the ******** return stuff they can't sell at a profit.  I saw a couple UGH figures the other day that I have a hard time believing were just from an old case...  It's stupid, but they seem to think it's a benefit in some way.

wait, that guy looks familiar.

Gawd, i can just see a bunch of scalpers at midnight madness (if that even happens), trying to cash in. Boy, are they going to be surprised.
While the AT-TE will be hot, I don't really expect Scalpers to get them, because they are a LARGE purchase and a risky one for them if they can off load for as much profit as they might want. They'll stick to the figs and maybe small ships (so get your Homing Spider Droids when you can). Good thing is that with the many collectors who seem to be saying poo-poo on the cartoon figs, those should be plentiful.

The sad thing is that while this UGH is even MORE lame than the previous two, there are still going to be the OCD collectors who HAVE to have these "special" cards, and would gladly pay top dollar for them on eBay if they have to.

(no offense to the JDers who collect packaging variations)

That's funny! Now why do they have to release anything during the same time as SDCC? Looks like I'll have to hit Target (if they decide to stock any 08 stuff by then) before going to the convention center.

This promotion is really really lame. At least the Gold coins had some merit and were somewhat fun to collect adding to the coin album. Even for a carded collector I do not get the benefit. This sort of "first run sticker" seems so 1990's when figure collecting became mainstream and when comic collecting went rampant with variant covers.

I cannot wait to find these and bend the cards in front of scalpers as I walk to the checkout. If I am followed out I will be sure to rip them open to their horror!

The only problem with the Hot Wheels picture is those guys look nothing like real Hot Wheels collectors I run into.  They're not exceedingly fat nor scruffy.  I don't see any sweatpants and they don't look like they smell bad.

True story: I was in a store yesterday looking for figures, the dude down the aisle looking at hot wheels let out a couple of rumblers that would have been hilarious if I'd known the guy.  But as a stranger stuck in the same store as him it was mighty disgusting.

Still, Hot Wheels chase stuff isn't as annoying as the Hasblow stuff.  Not to me anyway.

Strangely enough that has not been my experience with Hot wheels collectors. The couple that I know (and believe me, it's not because I want to, but I just happen to run into them a bit), are skinny and clean shaven. I don't take the time to smell them, so at the least they must have showered recently as they don't have a smell that wafts across the aisles.

By the very description given, I might be misconstrued as a Hot wheels guy then. I'm overweight, have a goatee (though I do shower daily...). Don't judge people necessarily on what they look like. Their actions speak a lot more to who they are than their look.

One guy I found funny was a guy I pegged as a Hot Wheels collector. When he asked how I knew, I pointed to his shirt. It was clearly emblazoned with a huge Hot Wheels logo on it. That was funny. He must have forgot he had that shirt on.

So did anyone find the "1st Day of Issue" versions of the figures hard to find?  I can't say I specifically looked for them, but several of the figures I grabbed randomly did have the stickers it seemed.  I did specifically grab an extra Han Solo "1st Day" figure for my carded Han collection, but otherwise I don't really collect carded figures (might grab a Chewie if I see one, we'll see) so this type of thing isn't a big deal to me.  I didn't notice for sure if "scalpers" or anyone was searching these out or not.  I did hear a guy at TRU to tell his friend "grab all the clones", and when his friend asked why, he said "because trust me, that's what will be worth the most".  Anyways, these didn't seem too hard to come by for the release day - but like I said, I wasn't specifically looking for them either.

This is my last year of collecting carded figures so I picked up one of each both Legacy & CW which was my only intention for 07/26.  Not that they were hard to find on Saturday, but I didn't find any yesterday nor today.  I originally thought it was just that silly sticker, but once I found out the card had foil on it, the deal was sealed.  Didn't cave on the 4 FDOI repacks so I'm off to a good start.   :)

I found loads of 1st Day Of Issues the morning of 7/26 at Wal Mart, but other than that, they've been pretty scarce. The only one I bought was a Yarna, and it was pretty pointless, as I opened it anyway.

I opened a Yoda and Captian Rex with these stickers. I don't feel evil. It's a stupid promotion anyway. I couldn't help that the 1st day versions were the only versions on the pegs at the WM I was at.

Yeah, aside from picking up a carded Han, I didn't necessarily pay attention to whether or not the figures had the "1st Day" stickers on them.  I ended up opening up a "1st Day" Vader, Ak-Rev, Yarna, Bane Malor, and CW Obi-Wan yesterday.

Me too! Like half of the figures I bought on 7/26 were FDOI. I had been debating whether to open them or not but the above comments combined with freaking $9 figure prices at Target convinced me to open them all.

On 7/26 I did not give a rat's ass about these at all. I only cared about getting all of the figures period, stupid stickers matter not. The only thing these are good for is trade right now, I am actually surprised how many people are into this promotion. If it helps me get my coin wants so be it, I am not complaining.

There was a lot of talk during the TRU MM in the line and in the store. In fact, many of the first people in passed on figures without the sticker just to find the FDOI stuff. I was able to get the current "harder to find figures" like Padme & Scuba Troopers largely due to that fact.

One thing is certain it helped initial sales whether you like it or not.

All the Clone wars figures I bought were 1st day. It doesnt really matter cause I ended up opening them all but when me and my friend were at TRU we noticed 1 guy grabbing every single one he could see into his cart so we stood beside him and grabbed the ones we needed and boy did he look pissed. He ended up following us around staring at our cart. It was funny, he eventually left once he realized we were indeed buying them but the fact that he was so desperate to get all of these make us laugh. And the reason why we knew he was indeed a scalper was..well what kind of collector would buy 10+ of each figure. ie ani,obi,yoda...

Good idea!  ;D

Think of it as a protest against this kind of sales gimmic. It's just stupid and lame to buy ten of each figure just because they have a special sticker on them. If the sticker isn't perfect, the figure will sit and get boughten by a kid or collector instead of a scalper who will just resell it at a markup and dump it on ebay. Hasbro, no more special foils and stickers! It's what helped kill the sports card & comic book industry and it will do the same to our hobby.

This is technically relating to the Clone Wars line, but since the "1st Day of Issue" topic is here I thought I'd post it here.  I was looking around HTS and I noticed that they have a "coming soon" 8 pack of the first 8 Clone Wars figures with the "1st Day" sticker/foil for $59.99.  I still see 1st Day stuff from time to time on the pegs, compared to never once seeing any of the initial round of "UGH" figures.

I too see a lot of 1st Day of issue lingering here and there. It was a really stupid promotion but it was a genius marketing move to drive traffic to the store on 7/26, it helped more than it hurt. The TAC Gold coins, in my opinion, hold the record for the most desirable UGH chase promo.

What didn't make sense was some cases had only half "1st day of issue" stickers on them. Then more cases were received with the sticker after the first of day of issuence. Half the items on the pegs didn't have the sticker on them to begin with! Personally I believe that any one that collected them for the chase stickers is got to be the biggest fool on these boards.

I agree. Anyone who collects MOC and all MOC variations kind of deserve it. It's one thing to get true variants or one of each to keep MOC. To collect duplicates on MOC because of a number error seems a little OCD to me, that includes FOD stickers. To each his own.

So I'm a fool for owning Legacy w1 & CW w1 on foil logo cardbacks w/shiny sticker  ???  Found them all on day 1 between two stores so it's not like I went insane trying to find them.  I'm a carded collector so what's wrong with having these on FDOI cards?  This was nothing like 06 or 07 UGH was nor do I believe it was meant to be.  Just a ploy by Hasbro to get people "excited" about the launch.

Anyone who collects something you don't agree with deserves to have added hardship?  Not sure how that makes sense - if someone wants to collect something different from me, I'd say more power to them and good luck on your collection.

I picked up all of the non-reissued FDOI figures, but not their "regular" carded counterparts.  Like Mike, I found them pretty easily within a week or two, so it wasn't that hard to get them all.  It was also more than just the sticker, since they're on foil cards, but I just liked the look of them in general.

Oh, and the best UGH promotion was still the silver mini-figs, not the gold coins.   ;)
