Collect All 92! / Re: Imperial Stormtrooper (Hoth Battle Gear)
« on: August 10, 2010, 06:30 PM »
Brother and me had 4 Kenner Snowtroopers between us. Yeah, lost half of the skirts (I never heard the word "kama" before five years ago). Some tabs broke off and couldn't hold them on anyway. Big rifle was cool, but aiming it would often make him fall over unless he was on a footpeg.

I find it amusing that they are the arch enemy of the Hoth Rebel Trooper, even though they never appear together onscreen. Kenner didn't care, and neither did I (then or now).

POTF2 was pretty tall. I remember when they got real cheap, could bought more. I got the Saga one with the odd pose and holster even though I wasn't getting much Star Wars at the time. Never got the kitbash of the two from Saga 2. A year or so ago, I found the Deluxe tripod gunner snowtrooper by himself at a flea market for a quarter. Good thing the saga one came with that cannon for him to use. Good thing the backpack wasn't meant to be removed, either, as he still had it.

Vintage is best, even with that clone head. Not that I'm that against clone heads. I just think he'd be wearing a head covering with winter gear. There's the "what color is his uniform? Khaki or grey?" debate. I wouldn't mind a retro Kenner take on him, all white with some black detail. The 4-Lom and ZUckuss retro colors are neat, why not do some more?

It's the 6th release of the AAT, I think. I found the blue and steel coloring odd, so getting back to gritty is cool. Sucks if you were building an army of the blue patterned ones and wanted more of those. I only have the 30th anni version, and this one looks more compatible with it.

I only have an incomplete AT-AP (stripped of everthing but 2 main legs and top gun) I got used for a buck and it's legs don't sit evenly (I assume it's a bad example). Not sure if it's worth getting unless I want to recreate the battle on Upsidedownsis.

$25 for a swamp speeder? I dunno, could get a clone with a big grub for that price!  :D (Though the hard part is finding ROTS clone who can sit down to operate it. (Come back, quick draws, all is forgiven! Well, maybe not all.)

Droid fighters/bombers never did anything for me.

I prefer the box with artwork to those Ultimate Battle Pack dio scenes. Those look impressive, but I see "great, packaging I'll keep that will take up too much space", because I know I'll have to keep it. A more regular box can be folded down or used to store other empty packages  :P.

Yeah, there's the theft/swapper thing. There's also the benefit of being able to look at the figures' paintjobs, though the last time they boxed a figure that was unviewable was Grievous Wheel Bike, the only one I can thing of off hand.

I wish the packs had a bit more to them, like

Imperial set: another snowtrooper, the tripod laser, a second AT-ST driver with a different head sculpt, a super articulated wampa, the Force Unleashed Hoth bonus level  Sith version of Galen "Starkiller" Mark, new probe droid with atomspheric entry shell.

Rebel set: another trooper, a new taun taun, a recast of the imperial attack base with electronic lights and sounds (new sized footpeg), EU Dash Rendar in snowspeeder pilot gear, plus his snowspeeder.

And they should be $10 cheaper... ;)

Interesting that Ventress and Grievous will finally share a scene together.

They can debate who is more incompetent and cowardly.

TV-9D9 / Re: Live Action Star Wars Series for real now

I figured years ago the live action show would never materialize. I wanted to be proven wrong.

I could see him remaking The Original Trilogy before making sequels, or at least Star Wars. IN 3D!

The Vintage Collection / Re: Better "Toys" Vintage or Modern?
« on: August 8, 2010, 12:15 AM »
Of course, 20 years from now, who knows how current stuff will age? Might be puddles of goo. And lots of discoloration, as flourescent light bulbs become standard in households.

IMHO, it's "apples and oranges" on detail and decoration. 30 years later, everything should be better in those departments.

3 Wal-Marts within 20 minutes of me. One had a few new vehicles. That was it. One had no figures at all (its the worst of the three for finding anything). One had two Clone Wars Anakin versions. The other had lingering BAD leftovers and 2 IG assassin droids (the smallest and most "ghetto" of the three, best for finding figures).

Vintage was a better toy line. Because I liked to be able to put Chewie in the X-Wing. If you have to ask why I would want to, I wonder if you were ever really a kid. Most of the characters were designed to sit (something a supposed "super articulated clone trooper" has problems with.)

Vintage figures hold up better, less parts to loose. I knew when ball joint heads and swivel wrists became common, we'd see loose, kid-owned figures with those parts missing. And I have seen them, at yard sales and on ebay.

They had vehicles and playsets that will never be remade in modern: Dagobah, Star Destroyer, Death Star, Ewok village, Rebel Transport, Imperial attack base, droid factory, the real dewback  :P, Jabba's Dungeon, Bespin Cloud City, Hoth Rebel Command Base, Land of the Jawas, Hoth Ice Planet (okay, those last 5 sucked... ;) )

Modern has better action figures (finally, it was touch and go with POTF2).

Looking back on the 70's-80's Kenner line, it seems ridiculous that there was only one Vader, one Obi-Wan and one Tattooine Luke, all with permanent retractable lightsaber arms. Luke couldn't even hold a blaster...or not well, anyway!

And the later lightsabers were pathetic looking, even for the era, colored sticks that were too short.

Yeah, young kids and cardboard aren't a good combo. That's why I can't even remember my vintage Land of Jawas "sandcrawler" or the inserts for the Death Star.

As for diorama packaging, I've used the Indiana Jones one from the second cargo truck release, Cairo street. That was a good one.

As for Star Wars, I've only acquired one, the Clone Wars Dooku speeder bike. I'm debating it, because it's small and you have to tear up the package. I'm nutty; I save all the packages. I need to go on a blister bubble removing spree someday, they take up a lot of storage.

Collect All 92! / Re: AT-AT Driver
« on: August 5, 2010, 06:51 PM »
Had five vintage ones at some point. One original, two used (one missing his lower right leg!) and two later new ones with softer arms. Enough for one AT-AT! But there were mini-rigs for them to operate and that Imperial cruiser/transport thing.

Never owned either POTF2 versions.

I think they wasted tooling over-updating the driver by making the BAD release, lower legs and new arms were all that was needed. Waist is nice to have...should've been on the Saga to begin with, but could live without it. BAD release is fairly tall, too. I did like the softer harness on BAD, as I broke my Saga one's harness on one side, by doing some crazy thing like having him sit down (Star Wars figures ain't made to sit, man!). I don't understand those harness/straps purposes anyway.

$11 Storm Commando and General Weir comic pack at Wal-Mart. Not a great bargain, but...

TRU.  Brick and mortar.  AT-AT $99.99.

In front of the wife, which took balls.

Has she given them back yet?  :D

Shadows of the Dark Side / Re: 2010 Legends Figures
« on: August 3, 2010, 08:54 AM »
May not be that weird. Consider that the regular (non-officer) red battle droid is part of the upcoming second wave of Geonosis Arena two-packs. The recent shots of those figures show the droid with corrected eyes. The officer droid isn't in those packs, and so they may not have changed the spray ops for it.

I've yet to see the droid 2-pack. I have a feeling it's going to be harder to find than other Legends. The previous ,barely articulated battle droid 2-pack releases were never peg warmers, not around here anyway.

$4?  Wow.

I finally found Aurra and Pre Vizsla this weekend, but still no sign of the Mando Cop.

Funny, because it seems he's the one starting to accumulate. It's pretty early to say that, but I've seen him more than anyone.

I found Dooku on his speeder bike for around $4 at Target. Pretty nice set. Never worth $16, but a nice set.
