Subscribers can always get a refund for the unused portion of their subscription.  That's the law.  All they'd have to do is call and cancel.  Of course, they would not get the magazine or online access to Hyperspace for free at that point.

I'm not sure if they were prepared for what to do about someone who say, got a second person to subscribe and got their tee shirt, but then the referral cancelled after the tee shirt was awarded.  Or, if even worse, if so many people demanded refunds after the winner was announced that it would somehow affect the standings if those votes were deducted.  None of that came to pass, but I think those are all huge holes in this contest plan.

If I get banned for NOT hating Jedidefender, yeah, that would suck.....same as it would if suddenly Chris decided to throw me out of here for not hating RS.

To me, the comparison is absurd.   You'd have to do some hardcore trolling to get banned here, and you would have your nads stomped by the group on your way out.  You wouldn't be quietly banned and then any and all talk about your suspension wiped from the record.

RS is the place where instead of dealing with a problem or criticism, it is swept away.  There are no guideposts for noobs to learn the ropes of posting, since anything that goes awry is deleted.

I don't think anyone is "suddenly" thrown out of here.  The mods do a good job of talking to the offender and giving them ample warning about a problem so that it can be corrected.

It's true. Even one of the staff banned himself, just to send a message to any one doubting that they were fair. :-*

I don't think my comparison was "absurd" at all.  Throwing someone off a website because they are registered at a competing website is silly. That's all I'm saying. They don't throw you out of McDonald's because you also eat at Burger King and talk about how crappy the McDonald's burgers are while you're in there.  It would be crazy for RS to throw me out just because I also post here, and vice versa.  I don't dislike either site at all.

Yes, I realize RS has actually thrown people out for things they've said or done over here.  I don't get that.   And yes, it's a lot easier to get banned over there.

As for the grand measures it would take to get banned over here, again...I attribute that to the whole traffic thing.  This place is like Cheers.  If you act up in Cheers, the other patrons quickly stifle you, and you'd quickly realize that your antics aren't welcomed. If you continue them despite no one thinking you're cool, one of the staff will throw you out, creating a huge scene.

RS is like a Baseball stadium or a Casino.  If someone acts up, the ushers in black quickly throw you the hell out of there without asking any questions and erase any trace that you were ever there.  Unless you happened to be at the site at the moment something went down, the next day.....you'll never even see the problem.

Although this practice works well when people do things like post a bunch of porn (someone did that the other day), I think it's counterproductive for silly things like an insult that went too far or a thread skepticizing  questionable "election" results.  When these sorts of threads are swept under the rug, the majority of members never get to learn what's right and wrong to say there, and that's partly why some bans end up being "shocking".

When I was moderating, I used the padlocks instead of the "Move to private admin section" feature, and I always posted a one or two sentence note letting folks know why the thread was locked. I would warn the topic starter publicly or privately and what they wrote would then sit there as a reminder of what NOT to post until it eventually fell off the front pages into obscurity.  The best moderators there still do this, and I know all the moderators here do it.  It's the only way that people learn.

I contacted USCWANNABE just after the election started, when he was a runner up to Dustin. I offered to help his campaign... we talked a lot via email and he was very genuine, a real fan who had his life changed by SW and he wanted to give back to it. He wasn't well known online in our circles, but he knew a lot of fans around the world. He told me he had a lot of people contact him and say they wanted to vote for him as they didn't like Dustin... nothing new there. Until the very final day he was in very high spirits and was sure he had won. He was very grateful and humble about the support he had got and wasn't going to forget it...

What happened I don't know. He hasn't replied to my mails so no idea, there is a chance something could have 'happened' to him.

USCWANNABE posted the blog linked on my site before it went on SW.com, as a press release, and it contains some comments about his past, maybe those were used to disqualify him. The myspace page I recall was made by someone for him, not by him.

As for Dustin I have to agree he should be disqualified due to the rules... Now there are comments that he isn't paid and doesn't work for Philip's sites. I used to be friends with a current RS staff member, amazing how RS changes people, and he told me that 'some' of the staff are paid, but those who are not don't know that. Besides that when RS staff are doing things like staffing the OfficialPix stand at cons are they doing it for free? Would you go to a con to work on a stand selling stuff and do it at your own cost? Some staff live in the UK who have done it... that isn't because they are dedicated... I cannot imagine that Philip doesn't pay for flights or their time at least... Also the advertising on RS is partly affiliate scheme, and some staff have their own affiliate schemes so they directly earn from those links. Nothing terrible at all, infact perfectly fair of Philip to thank his staff for their work by giving them freebies or kick backs, and I for 1 don't see it as a negative... but it shows that the staff are paid in some means to work on RS and co.

As for the banning on RS... I got banned because I pointed out that an RS staff member was selling pirate DVD's of Clone Wars, Droids etc BEFORE the official versions were made, and the staffer had linked to the site they had set up for selling the stuff. Illegal full stop... but I got banned and the staffer stayed. Since then I have not been allowed to rejoin, none of my site staff can either and they are removed as soon as they do, banned by association... and I am told by some of my site visitors that when they joined RS forums they got banned if they mentioned TPU and in one case someone was banned for what seemed to be because his ISP is the same as mine so the IP address was similar... paranoid or what.

On the 'who gets news first' point... TPU has beaten RS by up to 6 months with some news, and other times got it right when they got it wrong... We used to send our news to them, but it would be used without credit or link, so we gave up... other times it is just taken without a credit... not very community friendly. I have seen on JD, Yak etc plenty of news scoops before RS caught up... I know that RS are not as close to official sources as they like their readers to think they are... but that's another topic.

Sorry to burst in after 40 pages... I'll go back to lurk mode now :)

Hmmm. I wonder who that staffer was? ::)

Perhaps the same staff member who was vigilantly defending a UK friend of his who had ripped off at least 30+ Rebelscum members through their classifieds to the tune of several thousand dollars...?  :o

I remember Scott noticing the bootleg/illegal copies being sold as well, and brought it up as being rather hypocritical, since the RS staff had busted/banned some of their members for doing the same thing in the forums here.  Go figure.  Staff membership has it's perks, I guess...  ::)

Kinda like when Jeff asked why a number of RS members were getting suspended/banned for having links in their sigs to other personal or interesting sites (non-JD, mind you), and whatnot, while all of the RS staff members had the same thing at the time.  In fact, Jeff was labeled a trouble maker for pointing that out, and was banned, followed by the rest of the JD bannings immediately following.  Truth hurts, I guess, and as always, much of the staff there does NOT lead by example.  Follow their lead in a number of respects, and you could very well get busted.  Staff membership has it's priveleges, indeed.

Jeremy is probably the biggest scumbag on staff there.  I brought the illegal DVD thing to PWise's attention, he's still working there and I am banned for doing absolutely nothing (I was never given a reason why other than guilt by being a FORMER JD Staff Member)

That's pretty freaking hilarious given that this is a quote of the Rebelscum General Forum Rules:

Illegal sales or other activity: We can not allow you to use our forums to distribute illegal goods. These include stolen or fake merchandise, or distributing copyrighted material in violation of U.S. copyright laws. If it goes against US law, we can not allow it.

Such posts will be deleted by a moderator. Such members are subject to having their account suspended by an administrator, as well as having the proper legal authorities contacted.

So from their own rules, Phillip should have banned Jeremy and turned him over to the F.B.I.
