Saga Collection '06 / Re: 2006 TRU Clone Wars Gunship
« on: May 4, 2006, 06:34 AM »
I consider the color blue on the ship its squad markings or just pilot preference...  Nothing to do with the eyes/teeth.  The famous P-40 squadron with shark's teeth/eyes in WW2 had colors that didn't match a shark on the plane...  It was the eyes/teeth's impression that they left on the enemy that made the plane...  The other colors for whatever reason (camo-ing, mission designation, etc.), are inconsequential really to the teeth/eyes then.

And yes it is pretty comical that the Clones know of Rancors, though EU does have a planet of them...  I dunno, maybe it's a popular planet? :)

Star Wars Dioramas and Displays / Re: Custom decals?
« on: May 4, 2006, 06:12 AM »
I'd avoid testors like the plague...  Their stuff's way overpriced.

Testors stuff is, if I'm not mistaken, water-transfer decal paper...  It's better IMO than messing with stickers personally, but it's a little more difficult to work with since you have to seal them and things to keep them from bleeding and whatnot.

There's cheaper places to get water-transfer decal paper though, no doubt.  Micro Mark carries it cheaper than Testors little kit...

The Original Trilogy / Re: Holy Trilogy on DVD!
« on: May 4, 2006, 05:58 AM »
I'm happy but it'd be cool if they'd had some "extras" on a bonus disc like cut scenes in their unfinished entirety or something.  Just something nice and extra...  Maybe a couple of the "making of" specials put to DVD that haven't already been done.  I dunno.

I'll buy it just because I want the OT without the SE on it.  I have a great clear copy now...  But I'll want these I'm sure.

And of course when they do give us bonus footage some day I'm going to be dumb enough to get those too because I want that f'n footage.

Saga Collection '06 / Re: Pride Displays Sith Set
« on: May 4, 2006, 05:55 AM »
I've found you can't get much I personally think is "nice" in Star Wars for $60 or less...  ;)

I kid some there...  But there's a tinge of truth to it too.  The $40 gunship is an ok toy but not my cup of tea since I'm interested in accuracy in all forms, so while it's cool for a kid as a toy, I think it displays somewhat poorly...  Same with other overpriced vehicles I think.

My comment about getting more complex stuff for $60 was more aimed at other toy lines that I know there's a lot I want that I can put that $60 into...  If I want a stand like that I think I'd try making it at those prices.  But at $30 or less I think I'd consider nabbing two actually for one large display.  All about finding the best value for your dollar I figure.

Clone Wars '03-'05 / Re: 2003 Clone Wars Republic Gunship
« on: May 4, 2006, 04:10 AM »
Actually no it wouldn't be all that big...  A to-scale Gunship would be only a little bigger than the toy's dimensions overall...  It's not a huge vessel as SW ships go.

I'm a big fan of to-scale ships myself, but I just resign myself to the fact it doesn't happen in this line from this company.  It's disappointing when I have the vehicles from the military lines I collect next to SW ships though and my military line's planes dwarf a SW ship.  ;D  Customizing ships is the route I go though and I gave up buying every Hasbro vehicle then because I just am not that into the deformed looks of them and stuff.

Other Collectibles / Re: Anyone into costume? Advice?
« on: May 4, 2006, 01:20 AM »
I want to have an Imperial Officer costume but god damned if I can find a pattern to make it.  Everyone says, "get this CW costume and modify it", and while I respect that opinion I'm not a seamstress and am not good at altering anything...  Much less a pattern.

I was wanting it for C3 actually just because I thought it'd be a remotely comfortable costume to wear at the show just for ***** and giggles, but alas I didn't get one done.  Doubt I will any time soon either. :(  Tough getting help making one I've found.  You'd think somewhere online there'd be a full pattern for it, but you'd be wrong...  as far as I know anyway.

We keep up with the SW Minis news pretty well, I have actually posted some teasers of things to come beyond the CotF line in a newspost a while back that maybe you've not seen yet Soggybottomboy.

Basically, there's more huge on the way including a Snowspeeder and things...  I think it's in this thread.

Matt who was our hardcore Mini guru for a while is on a bit of a haiatus right now...  He's busy at home so he's not online as much working for JD but he's still a part of everything, just a lot less talkative.  If we're lucky he'll be back into this game soon to chat it up.

I personally don't collect the line hardcore.  I try army building, and there's some good news for people who army build too (wink wink), but due to my being poor, haha, I just can't collect the minis like I'd like to.  Hopefully you'll invigorate some life into this thread.  We need some more minis talk for certain.

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Re: Styrene Sheets
« on: May 4, 2006, 12:57 AM »
Dunno Jediraven82...  Long time no see by the way. :)

I've never seen one of those tools to know.  Basically though, anything like a box cutter can score plastic just fine.  When it's thin enough you score it, then just bend and it snaps right off cleanly.

If it's REALLY thin plastic you'll go right through it with too much pressure when scoring so be weary of that.

As far as painting goes Brent, styrene is what the old SW figure torsoes were made out of (the 2-parters).  That's a rigid ABS plastic.  It takes any kind of paint...  If you're fearful of the black showing through, prime it and you'll avoid the issue.  Generally vehicles don't have TOO much PVC style plastics on them.  For instance on the Naboo Fighter from Hasbro the ship's 90% a styrene-like plastic.  The engine tips and tail though, are a pliable plastic as you know most likely, and they aren't going to react to all paints well.  The rigid ABS paints with most anything I've found though.

Toy Reviews / New JD Review: VTSC Luke X-Wing Pilot
« on: May 4, 2006, 12:34 AM »
New week, new review...  :)

This week around we're taking a look at yet another figure in the Vintage Saga Collection line.  Click the image button for the full review, and share your thoughts here...

Me, this is what pilots (and army builders in general, which I semi-classify Luke in) are all about...  Super articulation, removable helmets, lots of weapons...  Well, maybe that last part isn't the norm, but on Luke it was a nice surprise that Hasbro gave you three weapon accessories to go with him.  And a hilt to clip to the belt is never a bad thing for a Jedi even if it's not even something you see in the film (in this pilot outfit anyway).

Hasbro knocked a figure out of the park with this one...  THere's flaws, don't get me wrong.  The paint on mine is piss poor really, and who doesn't want some grime on that helmet?  But overall Hasbro has another winner...  But for $10+?

Well, I'm not TOO upset with the price but I really wish this is what we got in the basic line ALL the time, not just sporatically when they know they can sell an army to us.  :(  Would it really hurt?  I mean it's not like you can't re-use this Luke's parts almost entirely to make MORE figures and save cash...

Anycrap, if you don't own Luke get him because he's pretty perfect.  That group shot Jared supplied at the end of my review is PERFECT representation of this figure.  Luke now doesn't look like a swizzle with his flightmates, but he doesn't look like a buff roided out freak either...  He looks PERFECT, and that's what we want.  Perfect...  :)

MisterPL's classic signature should probably apply but if you can't I guess that's ok.  Just make it coherent?

BBI made 1:18 SWAT/Police a while back Fritz.  The line was their first, and ran alongside the original SEAL and Army Spec. Forces guys...  Mostly at specialty shops.  I have a complete set of the cops, they've all got unique heads save for two who re-use fairly generic heads from the TRU Seals/Spec. Ops.

Might find them on Ebay cheap.  I got my cop figures for less than their cost at EB Games stores if that helps.

Power Team Elite also made a limited SWAT line before they've fallen into some problems.  PTE still makes stuff as far as I know but it's harder to find than it used to be.  I got some of the SWAT guys and they're not bad...  NOt BBI level, but not bad.

Check BBI's site for the SWAT Guys, I think they're pictured.  One is a regular uniformed cop I believe.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Gas Prices
« on: May 3, 2006, 05:29 PM »
Actually, the US steel industry isn't what it was.  It took a major hit in the 70's, especially in western PA and the midwest.  Now the US is having to compete mightily with Japanese steel.  There was actually quite the trade dispute about it for a while, with the US claiming that the Japanese were trying to flood the US market with Japanese steel.

While the steel industry took a hit, it didn't die by a long shot...  The industry had to deal with foreign competition for the first time like Anton mentioned, and that forced an overinflated industry with a chokehold to deal with something it hadn't up till that point...  It shut down a lot of various steel companies, forced others into combining, but it didn't spell doom for steel like history books sometime say.  My home town still has two operational specialty steel mills in it, there is one of the nation's larger plants up the river in another town, and further down the Allegheny is the Allegheny Technologies headquarters plant...

That's just some of the plants in Western PA, which are still considered the top employers for the region.  There's others...  Others still simply moved to areas that would cost less to produce, but kept them in the U.S.  The mills aren't one in every town in the area out near Pittsburgh anymore and that's the visible sign of the hit the industry did take, but they're still plentiful, and U.S. Steel is still a strong industry despite what competition they were forced to deal with.
