« on: September 27, 2007, 11:42 PM »Those Imperial commandos are VERY impressive customs and an excellent start, but I do think they could use a little more. I don't know, they're just too white and plain, maybe give each one its own unique paintjob, like the Delta Squad. I'll be interested in seeing your progress!
The plain look is intentional. I may give them a very mild wash to bring out some of the details in the armor and possibly a little more dirt wear, but not too much. I fashioned them more after Omega Squad than Delta. Being that the idea for these guys is a transitional phase into the OT stormtrooper uniforms they don't sport any individual paint markings though they do each have unique accessories to fit thier specialty. In the future I may make some more like the Deltas.

No, they are two different figures but they do use similar parts.

It's been quite a while since I posted here. There is some great work on this board. I thought I'd start a thread with some of my stuff.
My latest is first and under that will be a few I've done over the years.
Update : 10/3
Tower Gun - I applied some plating and pieces to the gun and gave it a prime coat. Still a lot of work to be done.
Imperial Commandos -
Inspired by Republic Commando and Ghost Recon I wanted to design a squad of commandos that would be a crossover from the Old Republic to the Empire. So, these Imperial Commandos were born.
These guys were cobbled together in a couple of days. The hardest part was trying to stop myself from overdoing it. I'm always tempted to add more or redesign the figure the longer I look at it. I'm sure they'll change soon. Anyway, here is what they look like now.
1. Commander -
Helmet - AT-AT Driver, Clone Commander visor, Death Star Gunner antenna.
Torso - 30th Anniversary Stormtrooper
Legs - #41 Clone Trooper
Backpack - Scorch, misc accessories, Mark IV sentry patrol droid from POTF2 Cantina diorama.

I think these all look good. I've been waiting for the DST for a very long time. I think he looks great except for those knees. I mean, that just looks horrible for a final product from Hasbro. I understand it's harder to hide the articulation but the Ceremonial Luke knees look just fine and it's basically the same outfit (pants and high boots) so it's not like it can't be done. Is it maybe because they were made by different sculptors? Anyway, I hope it turns out looking better in person.

For the helmet, I made 2 casts of the POTF2 biker helmet using my hollow helmet technique. I then cut one helmet in 4 quarters.
THen cut sections (like thin stips) of the other and used them to extend the origianl.
I then used wax to fill in the areas and sculpt a longer mouthpiece.
I'll forgot to upload the wip pic of the helmet. I'll try to get them up tonight.
Any chance you'll be selling casts of the removable Biker scout helmet in the near future?

It looks a lot like the base where the FX7 droid is placed on the Luke Bacta tank with some greeblies added. I really like the paint job on this.

« on: April 13, 2006, 04:45 PM »I don't know about this one. To me, he seems to be in a very unnatural pose. I mean try sitting in an upright chair with both hands on the arm rests and have you legs in the air. It's not an easy position to hold. Basically, he has his back set firmly against the chair but has his legs up in the air without support. It would seem better if his legs were shorten and made to have his feet on the ground.
The arms and body and head are alot better than the first attempt but in the first attempt you got the legs positioned better. I don't think its quite there yet.
I agree, this bothers me too. Another thing is, is that the arms are not resting completely on the arm rests. However, these two issues are an easy fix but in order to do it I have to glue the figure to the chair and his legs to the bottom part of the chair. I haven't done that because I don't want to ruin this chair. I will do that as soon as I get another one.

Thanks. I've been wanting a reclining, snide, sarcastic Emperor on his throne for many years. I was happy when they released the Final Duel but I didn't like the edge-of-the-seat pose. The chair is really nice though. Anyway, I saw what Attakus did and just couldn't wait any longer. I wish I could shrink the Attakus statue down to 1:18. I love that piece. I understand that it's not much fun to play with for the kids but dang he just looks so cool kickin back and being overconfident.

« on: April 13, 2006, 12:35 PM »That is an incredible looking piece. I'm amazed at how well an Unleashed base fits in with the 3 3/4 scale pieces. I still don't see how you got the character to "sit" with the hard plastic/rubber pieces. I'm going to have to go over your recipe again. Very nice!!
Well, the figure (POTF Final Jedi Duel Emp) was already sitting but he was just positioned leaning forward in his chair. What I did was separate the forward leaning torso from the sitting legs and turn it around so that his back was now facing forward. This makes the figure appear to be reclining.
Then, I needed to make him sit lower in the chair for two reasons. One, his head would be too high and two, it looks better, to me, if he is slumped like in the movie. So, I kept cutting some plastic off his butt until I thought he was sitting low enough. After that was done I took the ROTS robes and began to glue them carefully to the body. I started at the neck and worked my way down. The robes are soft enough and the glue was strong enough to do it.
It's a lot harder to explain than to do but I hope I made some sense here. Not the best pic but the image below shows the cloak in a bit more detail.

Some of you may remember the seated Emperor Palpatine I did a while back. I created another version which is not too different than the previous one but it does have a few changes.

Version 2:
I will upload more images in the near future.
Version 2 Parts Used:
1. The chair, figure and hands are from POTF2 Final Jedi Duel Cinema Scene.
2. The head and outer cloak and clasp are from ROTS Emperor Palpatine Firing Force Lightning.
3. Arms are from OT Anakin
4. Hood is from POTJ Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi).
5. Unleased Darth Sidious base.
Steps:
1. The chair was removed from the base using a Dremel and sanded. The body was severed in two and readjusted so that it would sit in a reclined position. This took some sanding and reworking to get it just right. I took a lot off the bottom of the figure in order to get it to sit even lower. The arms were added. The head was removed and not used. The outer cloak (ROTS) was split in the back and carefully glued (using ZAP) to the figure. The cloak is soft enough where you can begin glueing and work your way down making sure the robe sits well on the body. Some trimming will be necessary around the back, underside and near the hands.
2. The head is glued to the body.
3. The hands were painted the same tone as the face and attached to the arms. The arms are then attached using ZAP.
4. The hood was cut from the rest of the cloak and the clasp was added and painted flat black. Since the hood was smooth and the rest of the figure had texture I painted a piece of gauze to the hood and when it was partially dry I removed it. This left a fiberous pattern on the hood. Not great, but better than smooth.
5. Painted the base in semi-gloss black.
Tools Used:
1. Xacto knife
2. Dremel
3. ZAP glue
4. Flat charcoal spray paint (body), gloss black paint (base), Olive, red and light gray for hands.

When I first saw the hilt in the package I thought I'd have to cut a section out to make it smaller. When I put it in his hand to eye it up I thought it looked good the way it was and left it.

« on: October 14, 2005, 12:19 AM »Great custom and I'm glad you showed it here. It totally reminds me of Malak, I bought that Croc Master figure a few months back specifinally to make a Malak custom someday.
I do prefer your design over the Malak design though! Excellent execution. A bit of dry brushing might make it look even more real.
Thanks guys. It does have a Malak feel to it because of the face plate and bald head. I too was going to do a Malak but saw this head and figured I'd just go with something a little different but similar. I like doing stuff that's character accurate but really like making stuff up as well. As I see from your work CHEWIE you like that too.
On the painting... you're right CHEWIE, I spent most of my time on the head and not too much on the body. I think I will revisit that at some point.

Thank you. The paint is pretty simple on this guy, except for the head. The sigil/symbol is from A Conan the Barbarian belt buckle. When my son is done with his toys I go through them and grab anything that I might be able to use, this is one of them. Also, the belt pouch was lifted from a Spawn figure's belt.
