Title: Vintage Figures That Need Redone
Post by: Jesse James on August 19, 2013, 07:15 PM
There probably won't be massive lists for most here, but am I the only one who would rebuy a number of TVC figures if they did them better?

Hoth Luke comes to mind...  He's too tall, lacks the thigh-strap sculpted to the holster (I HATE it sculpted to the figure's leg), and I really thought the non-removable helmet and half-assed mask look was really bad, bad, bad.

This figure, to my eye, stands out like a sore thumb...  The height is my #1 gripe though.

Is there a TVC figure you look at, and really wish they'd redo him already?

Yavin Han... that one was inaccurate on some many levels.  ::)

Despite them being rather high up my wishlists I skipped Yavin Han and Hoth Luke. I definitely want to see both of them remade soon. Death Star Luke could use a resculpt too but I want a basic farmboy first. And I'd like to see Tarkin reissued with a sculpted lower tunic.

Good choices...

I'd like to see Tarkin put out again...  a more grey tunic, tone the green down a little, but more than that I'd really like to see them put some $ into the headsculpt's paintjob.  It's not bad, but the paintjob really did no justice for the figure's likeness.  It was nice to finally get a Tarkin Vintage card, but it was not their best effort by any means either.  Too important of a character to piss away like that.

I'd agree totally on Ceremony Han though I never bought him.  For my $, he wasn't even counted in the line.  A major failure for Hasbro there...  No effort at all put into the figure, just new accessories more or less.

I'm surprised Jedi Luke got mentioned...  I consider him pretty perfect really, though a flap open version would be nice.  To be honest I liked the previous Jedi Luke's ability to swap chest pieces for open flap or closed flap on his shirt.  I thought that was truly innovative and creative on Hasbro's designer's parts...  take the wrist ball joints out and give back the removable chest bit IMO.

Tarkin, I can't believe I didn't mention him...  He wasn't as bad as people were thinking he was going to turn out, but he certainly wasn't nearly as good as he deserved.

POTF2 got all the coloring and deco right, even on the headsculpt.  The Vintage figure failed in almost every way but the figure's overall sculpt and likeness.

IF they do him over, with a plastic skirt piece, I'd prefer one like the Death Star trooper has that is very flexible for sitting.  Tarkin sits a bit, and I'd like the figure to be able to, as I'd like to display Imp Officers around their conference table at some point.

- Rebel Fleet Trooper: just needs the holster I think
- General Lando: terrible cloth cape, terrible headsculpt
- C-3PO: I liked the deco for the most part despite it not being vac-metalized. It just should have used the BAD sculpt from the beginning
- Royal Guard: Like Lando, the cloth outfit was a bit excessive, and could have been scaled down a little bit, or at least designed similar to the original Vintage version
- Yoda: design it more like that awesome SA Clone Wars version. Odd that that version of Yoda is the most definitive figure of the character that we've gotten since... the 90s? I don't see how the CW figure had ball joints out the wazoo and was perfectly scaled while the TVC Yoda had cut-corner limbs

I have others, but they're nitpicks at this point (like Bespin Han's vest being a separate piece)

Always room for a screen-accurate RFT with that glaring holster error addressed too.

Might as well add (since I forgot this exclusive is Vintage, too) Han Solo in Carbonite.  I wee bit too narrow and I'm pretty sure there was more foot sticking out of the block than they have.

I'd consider that a new figure really...  That things' just a sloppy repaint IMO.

But it's a sorely needed new figure, for certain.

I like the mention of Lando's cape and a new headsculpt wouldn't hurt for sure.  I'm ok with what we got, and plan to add my own thread "clasp" to his cape eventually.  That's all that's holding it back for me to be totally satisfied.

On Han figures, ALL Han figures should have a separately sculpted thigh-strap attached to the holster.  The holster, belt, and any "skirt" bits (like Hoth Han) that may be there should ALL be very pliable plastic as well.

Totally agree on Bespin Han's coat...  or any vest he wears.  I hated seeing Hasbro go from depth to trying to sculpt depth and deco around it.  It's a sloppier, cheaper, effort on their part.  Same with the thigh straps on Han's legs...  For the price, all the repacks in the line, all the corners they cut, Hasbro owes better IMO.  Premium figures should be premium quality.

RFT's holster, I hear things...  I hear things... :P

He too needed a separate vest sculpt though, IMO.  Again, a corner cut that I feel hurt the figure.  It impacts his ability to kneel for certain.  I like the RFT, and have army built him a bit, but he's not an unflawed figure.

Not much in TVC was without flaw...  People have proclaimed it the greatest line ever, but for the $ I firmly disagree with that.  I point to 2007 as the greatest single series of figures Hasbro ever put out...  The quality and price were spot-on to one another.  The diversity was out of control.  Even Legends was in demand from collectors and kids alike.  Hasbro may never reclaim glory like that.

TVC...  I think people wax nostalgic over those cards so much, they're short-sighted on figure quality getting all these corner cuts to the point that every figure suffered to some degree.

Now that's not to say they're bad figures...  far from it.  But would I take no ankle joints on the Fleet Trooper, to get a removable vest?  Hell yeah.  I'd also take no leg flares or hat, as well.

Would I take no mousedroid with Tarkin for a better paintjob.  Absolutely.

I don't collect cardboard though, so I'm not going to proclaim TVC as the greatest line this company ever did.  Hell, the only carded figures I have a full set of, are McQuarrie ones...  30AC was where it was at.  Jabba's Drummer wasn't perfect but he didn't cost me $10 and he was pretty damn close.

+1

That Vintage Collection Yavin Han makes me cry a little everytime I see it.   :-\

His head's huge too...  I hate that.

I really hope we get a retool of the Jar Jar Carbonite block with a new or retooled post-freeze Han figure. The new block was a very nice piece, and I was bummed to learn it wasn't included with the Slave 1. I still like the TSC Han, but it's a figure that could use some extra articulation. Including the carbonite block should be doable for Hasbro now that they have returned to larger bubbles.

I'd like to see a block that has a frozen, unfrozen, and thawing detachable faces...  I see no reason they couldn't do that.  I'd pay a premium for that, and a SA Han that includes bicep restraints and wrist restraints...  2 headsculpts would be kinda nice too with him normal and kind of dazed looking too, if it were some kind of premium figure.

Stormtrooper for me. Never liked the look of the ball jointed hips.

Yeah,  and why not a Stormtrooper with ball jointed wrists? Also, I can do without the removable helmet.

Wasn't happy with Hoth Leia's lack of ankles. She did run around a lot in that outfit.

Or Ackbar's ankles. He didn't run around a lot, but Ewok village dancing!

Super Battle Droid, which was recolor anyway. Need the ankles (which they'd already made), and really, a totally new more accurate, non damaged, upper body and swivel lower arms.

Gammorean Guard...not a do-over, just some tweeks. Yeah, the fur skirt issue and too many joints are tight (shoulders) or have limited motion (the hips, knees).  Also, light pipe eyes, opening jaw, toes joints, spring action waist....maybe not.

Was thinking how I'd love to see the Endor Rebel Sergeant done with a screen accurate headsculpt not, whoever the bald dude with a goatee is...  That trooper can be seen, and didn't look like that.

Not a fan of that neck either, so a retooling of that torso would be appreciated.

Bespin Han...  thigh strap on the holster, separate coat sculpt...  I'd buy quite a few with those additions/updates for sure.

AT-AT Commander...  new head for a better Veers figure would have been appreciated though I liked that they went generic honestly.  That said, a recoloring to a less bright/light grey would be appreciated...  a lot.

Dak with a crushed skull variant!  :-X  Eh.

Not really sure why there would be a need for another Yavin Ceremony Han.  Sure, the VC version sucks, but it's basically just ANH Han with a medal, right?  Just take the awesome VOTC version & slap a medal on him.  Presto.

Not really sure why there would be a need for another Yavin Ceremony Han.

Because what we got was horribly screen inaccurate.  It's not just the fact that he had his shirt buttoned up at the ceremony, but the shirt he was wearing had sleeves that went all the way down to his wrists.  If they're going to charge me $10 for it, I'd prefer they get it right and not just take the lazy way out.

Drives me crazy when they take the lazy way because it's "close enough". [insert rant on the gross misuse of Vader/Anakin/Luke lightsaber/hilts  ::)]

yeah the shirt's pretty much everything here...  The sleeves are longer than Han's normal collarless shirts, and this shirt appears to be cut like the Rebels are wearing.  Actually it's seemingly exactly like the Technician Commander's shirt who's seen in the war room (says about the new enemy signals, enemy fighters).

Basically, it's a Fleet Trooper/Antilles shirt...  Guess Han's shirt had been on him so long it could almost walk away so the Rebels gave him something new and more formal for the medal ceremony?  I dunno.

And if we're going to fix that, I'd like to see them either go back to the VOTC head or a new attempt at ANH Han because that Ceremony/DSE Han head is attrocious on multiple levels to me.  It's like Big Head Han from 78 all over again.

And since I can, I'm asking for the separate sculpted thigh-strap as part of the figure's pistol holster...  That's such an awesome feature on Ceremony Luke, Legacy Hoth Rebel Troopers, and other figures...  It gives the holster realistic positioning and seems to barely, if at all, hinder a figure's leg articulation since it moves with the leg well.  It's a feature I really miss them doing.

VOTC Han, honestly I'd like to see redone...  They've milked the tooling long enough.  I'd like to see an "Ultimate" ANH Han in 3.75" scale that's like the upcoming 6" figure.  Include removable regular blaster belt/holster and a Stormtrooper one.  Extra gloved hands.  DL44 retooled would be dandy too.  They've done some impressive stuff with weapon sculpts in the last 6 years.

Hard to believe it's been NINE years since we got the VOTC Han. No ANH Han since then has come close to topping it.

As long as the strap is made of soft enough material. The 2006 AT-AT Driver's straps start to tear when you seat him, unless you are careful. One of mine tore completely.

I've got like 30 of them and never had that problem scockery...  Weird.  Same with the Reb pilots...  I agree though that I want flexible material...  Hoth rebel is perfect.

I pointed this out to Darryl at SDCC this past year.
