The Vintage Collection / Re: Hasbro Q&A Sessions
« on: September 29, 2011, 05:26 PM »
I love the larger vehicles (republic shuttle aside) but the MTT is a big turd and just kinda hovered for a minute.  Granted the army of droids inside was pretty nifty and I'd bet they'd outfit it with maybe half of them to start things off.  I'm sure if they did make one it'd follow that formula and be some kind of wonky playset and I guess that would be okay because other than the droid storage it really didn't/doesn't have much going for it.

Perhaps we'll see a few *hints* in the toon ?

Yeah, a PAC type craft could turn out well in whatever passes for the starfighter assortment these days, but it could use a boost from the 'toon to give it a lot more recognition than it has now.

I never once noticed the things watching TPM:

Nor RotS:

They only came to my own attention when lego made this excellent set last year:

Although, I guess they also had an earlier go at it during the E1 era:

I've read reviews citing the legs on the AT-AT don't stay connected too well which won't be good when my 3 1/2 year old starts playing with it.  I'm hoping it won't be an issue.

It won't be an issue for long.  It will quickly be determined once and for all that the legs are simply space junk that live in the bottom of the toy bin (with the electronic X-Wing's laser cannons, the skiff's wind rudders, and the MF ramp/hatch).   >:D  Your AT-AT will scoot around on its belly from then on out.

If my boys were still younger (they're quickly transitioning into lego all-the-time-every-time play), I'd like to log some serious time over on various Transformer Customs boards learning how to cleverly beef up different styles of moving joints.  I think it usually involves a bunch of nail polish.  For awhile there, I was tempted to just bolt big metal pins right through the center of those AT-AT joints and be done with it.

bout to go look for an At St here, but i was wondering how many times the X-Wing has been released? anyone know? Thank you in advance.

AFAIK, 5 times.  This includes 2 sculpts, one of which has 3 different paint schemes.

Sculpt 1:  Opening/Closing S-Foils and a snubbier (more Galactic Heroes-ish) nose
Sculpt 2:  Always-Open S-Foils, longer nose, and the 4 laser cannons come off (constantly)... but it has ROCKING electronic noises from Episode IV.

Releases
1.  Playskool X-Wing Adventure (Sculpt 1 w/ Red 5 deco) - 2002
2.  Galactic Heroes X-Wing Fighter (Sculpt 2 w/ Red 5 deco) - 2004
3.  Assault on the Death Star '07 (Sculpt 1 w/ Red 5 deco; only set w/ Biggs) - 2007
4.  Dagobah Landing  (Sculpt 1 w/ special Swampy Red 5 deco; only set w/ Dragonsnake) - 2008
5.  Assault on the Death Star '09 (Sculpt 1 w/ generic [or Red 6?] deco; only set with Porkins) - 2009

  :o :o :o  Bleeepity Bleeping Bleepy Bleep!!11!1!!  :o :o :o

I finally got around to buying the Gus and Duncan book.  How does such a thing exist in this world?

For over a year now, I've read nothing but the most glowing possible reviews of this book.  How, then, could I still be totally unprepared for how wonderful it actually is?  I mean, the build-up couldn't have been higher.  I've even seen the sample pages and the flip-through demo video.  Yet the exceeds-expectations factor on this thing couldn't have been more decisive.  Is there no amount of hype this book would fail to live up to?

After some dazed thumbing around... I decided to gauge its depth with Decipher CCG content.  I don't know what I was expecting... maybe lists of each expansion set (limited/unlimited as applicable) with sample photos of some of the packaging?  Or maybe I actually did expect every single card to be listed (they are!!) with sample photography of many.  All I know is: when the first index entry sent me to the apparel section for old Tournament-Winner T-shirts, I got a real vertigo feeling in my stomach.  Then seeing page after page after page of that dear, familiar card library... and it all amounting to virtually none of the total heft of the book.  I mean...

How does such a thing exist in this world?

I can't imagine the human who would find his way to the JD forums, but not need to own this thing.  Even if it's not the detail... it's the perspective.  If the only thing you love is Vintage Kenner, there is still something VERY special and surreal about seeing your entire hobby situated into its own honored place among the entire SW merchandising history.  Even the very few reference sources that can beat it for Action Figure detail can never yield that special perspective.

Sorry for the explosion of thoughts there.  I just can't remember the last time I was so thrilled by a product.

I am officially bummed out that Episode 1 is getting a theatrical re-release... and yet it still can't be our opportunity to finally add some Watto, Sebulba, Amidala, Nubian, Gungan, Nemoidian goodness to the Galactic Hero line.  Alas.

When did Lego start using shorter legs for children and Wattos?  I LOVE it!

Wait, why does Hasbro keep killing these lines at the conventions (comic packs and titanium got axed in front of live audiences, too, right?)?  It's a little extra dose of stomach punch - looking forward to new releases, and instead getting the slide that says "Last Wave FOREVER (suckas!!!)."  Is there any downside to quietly slipping a statement in at the head of a Q&A batch like a month earlier?  There's really no excuse for negativity at a showcase event like this, is there?

This is a reasonable fate, I suppose.  The only things that I'm truly annoyed by are:

1.  We didn't get Episode 1 dudes when we could.  The line is far bigger that we ever hoped, yet also no where near big enough because of it.  Period.

2.   Totally blew it with ride-ons.  The best thing about this entire line happened on day 1 and virtually never again.  If you're going to stick with the dopey straddling pose for nearly an entire decade, why in the world would you NOT make the ONLY things straddling is good for?  Jerk-offs!  There's already a huge, clumsy BARC speeder for the new dudes with bleeping uni-legs!?!?  What the bleeeping bleep, Hasbro?!?!?  For real.

I want my tiny, rubbery, BARC speeders, swoops, and Dooku-choppers.  I want my Episode 1 guys.  Then kill my line.

Yep, Galactic Heroes is dead.  The Vos/Bariss wave will be the last.

I wonder if there is something with this and they want to try a new style/scale across the board for all of their lines

Yep.  Super Hero Squad will continue with some 3-packs tied to the movies, but their general 2-packs are dead.

The new "Playskool Heroes" line will have Star Wars, Marvel, and Transformers.  The new style is really similar to the "Adventure Heroes" line they have now (firemen and policemen).  It was designed to be more like the "Imaginext" stuff.  It opened the doors to better vehicles and playsets since the figures will fit in the ships better (they have real articulation now).  We took a bunch of pics, they'll be coming soon.

The Imaginext toys are so great.  The articulation that matters most is at the waist.  Bend at the waist, stop guarding point guards, and presto:  there's suddenly a Landspeeder.

I've wished Galactic Heroes could get a do-over in Imaginext style (STUNNED they would spend the tooling) - but only with a time machine.  Sigh.  Total refreshes (as opposed to endless new dudes) is just a much more natural progression for a pre-school line.  It's very much like Little People and plenty of other examples.  Here's the model:

re-issue vehicles that make sense from old line
release 40 dudes or so, total, in tons of repacked combos
create new vehicles that are tailored specifically to new style
change style
repeat

In three years, we'll have non-articulated dudes again (the same 40, new style) - but they'll have patterns sculpted on their feet that will trigger different sounds when mashed onto buttons on electronic playsets.  Three years later, they'll be non-articulated AND non-electronic friendly, but they might make more that 40 dudes again - and we're back at square one.

Just please tell me SOMEBODY cornered a Hasbro rep and determined the AT-ST's fate.

Nope, not just you.  I collect Prequel, CW, and OT - and 2010 just wasn't that great.  Imagine if the TRU sets had gotten out in 2009 as planned.

My personal guess goes like this:
When Hasbro says, "this isn't a collector's line; no more cinema scenes" - they really mean,
"this has always been a collector's line, and we're out of Impressive OT stuff.  Let's be very carefull with our CW toys until we figure out who's buying them."

Don't we usually know at least the Spring wave by now?  Are we totally sure Walmarts even have the 2-packs on their 2011 planner?

Found the Vos wave, and shocked myself by passing on the new Vader.  I may be in a huge minority, but that thing blows in person.  Non-crouching, non-cartoony proportions (tiny helmet and legs).  If the Luke he's [re]packed with "stood up," he'd tower over Vader.

I'm probably alone here, and probably wrong, but that thing bummed me out.  It hardly qualifies as a Galactic Hero.  It's more like one of those 2" Unleashed figures.  What's the point?

Hey Hasbro! / Galactic Heroes Twilight
« on: September 27, 2010, 11:42 AM »
I feel silly asking, without one in the 3.75" line, but has Hasbro ruled out designing a Twilight for Galactic Heroes?  The line gives all the fudge room needed to handle any size and proportion problems.  The line is also perfect for the play pattern of stuffing "guys" in a boxy cargo hold and flying them to battle.

Quinlan Vos and Barriss Offee are the mystery fourth 2-pack in the upcoming wave!  An ebay seller from China has this set up for sale.

Wow, that's a good looking set.  I've not yet gotten around to reading any comics with Quinlan Vos, but he looks neat. And Barriss Offee is just great.

So, I was shuffling through some of the many, many extra Cinema Scene filler figures I have stuffed in a shoebox in my closet.  I guess there are alternate torso sculpts for Chewbacca with bowcaster?  One of them is smiling (sculpted, not just painted), the other is not and has a hole in his back for that bowcaster to plug into.  I think the smiling version must actually just be the same torso from that old Chewbacca permantly holding a blaster?  This line is surprisingly tough to keep up with.

Just playing here...

Chewbacca with Bowcaster* (not smiling; hole in back)
Chewbacca with Bowcaster (smiling; no hole in back)
Chewbacca with Blaster (smiling; no hole in back)
[as far as I know, there isn't a Chewbacca with Blaster (not smiling; hole in back)]
^^^All of the above sorta being kit-bashed variations on the same figure^^^

Chewbacca on Cloud City (Open palm; has a net for C-3P0)
Prequel Chewbacca with that Energy Orb Sling or Club or whatever
Chewbacca holding Blaster with two hands

*There are gray and black versions of the bowcaster.  I think both have come with the hole-in-back Chewacca, and only the black one has comme with the smiling one?
