Title: Remote Control R5-D4 and R5-X2
Post by: Scott on April 26, 2007, 12:23 PM
Anyone going to be buying an R5-X2 to put in ye olde Jabba's Area in your TPM display?

R5-X2 (http://shop.starwars.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=406569;category_id=;pcid1=;pcid2=)
R5-D4 (http://shop.starwars.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=406567;category_id=;pcid1=;pcid2=)

$25 w/ shipping is pretty spendy but these sure are neat little guys

These are kind of spiffy, and awfully tempting.  The price (with shipping) is what keeps me away.  I was always interested in picking up the others, having just the original R2, but haven't pulled the trigger on any of them.  How many of these R/C astromechs have been released now?  I suppose I might better put the money I could spend on these towards the EE-exclusive astromech 5 packs I've long wanted to get.  These are neat though.

These are numbers 5 and 6 in the series:

1. R2-D2 in orange packaging
2. R2-Q5 - black droid
3. R4-P17 - Obi's droid from the prequels I think.
4. R2-D2 - dirty or battle damaged, I'm not sure, but the difference from the first R2-D2 isn't particularly significant, just some grey paint and new packaging with the 30th anniversary logo (presuming you can read Japanese.

Now these guys.

I know the first three can all be run at the same time because the radio frequencies are different, but not sure about the last R2 as I haven't tested it beside the others yet.  I usually order mine from Robby.jp

I ordered them. I originally intended just R2, but have ordered them all.

The only one in the series that I've passed on was the battle damaged R2-D2.  But as for these two R5 units?  I'm definitely getting these!  Especially a previously unmade droid like R5-X2.

I just got the weathered R2 in the mail today, not really that drastic of a paint job.  ::)

No, it's actually quite disappointing, isn't it?  I"m happy they're adding in the two new droids instead of repainting something.  If they do repaint one of these, such as yet another R2, I doubt I'd buy it.

I think the updated Japanese packaging is more interesting than the actual change in paint job for R2.  So I doubt they'll be able to sell me on another R2.  But bring on the R5's!  I've got them preordered and can't wait to add them to the others on display.

I just checked my order status at SWS.com, and apparently both of my droids have already shipped out.  $91+ for four astromechs.  Puke.

Seriously Mac, come over to the dark side and go non-double-completist. More beer money this way. ;)

As to the droids, they are neat enough but I'll pass. X2 is the only one I'm really interested in; my POTF2 Missile-firing D4 is good enough for me. ;D

The proportions of the head are all ****y, particularly the "neck" is much too thick. I guess that's what they needed to fit the mechanisms in there. Also, X2 is too clean and white and the lines on his head are way too dark and pronounced:

I often enjoy a good comparison shot like that, to see how close the toy came to the actual thing.

This isn't one of those times.  :-X

...And no, after 12 years of double-completism, I ain't gonna pull a "Jeff" and turn back now!  :P

The fact that these are slightly out of scale with the Basic figures is good cause enough for me to turn these down. But can't say I'm not tempted.

Mine came in Saturday and despite being out of scale I think they're pretty neat. My major gripe is that R5-X2 shares the same band as R2-Q5.

Saw the shipping notice that these were on the way.  Here's hoping they come tomorrow!
