Watto's Junk Yard / Re: JD Book Club: What Are You Reading Now?
« on: May 13, 2006, 11:59 PM »
I'm in a "holding pattern" of sorts, waiting for the next Star Wars series to start, so I started re-reading my William Gibson stuff. Currently I'm reading "All Tomorrow's Parties" which, while not one of his best, it's still pretty good.

Saga Collection '06 / Re: Battle of Tatooine Wave

Hey, you never know. As far as "widely available at retail" goes, I'd have to argue with that. I have yet to see anything after the Geonosis wave yet, and even that wave I didn't see 100% at retail. Never saw Scorch, never saw the Utapau Clone... but I'm sure most people would say that it's widely available. I read stuff every day from people here and other forums finding stuff all the time, yet I can't find ****. And yes, I wake up at the crack of dawn on the weekends, and do my toy runs. And I still come home empty handed. I had to break down and buy a set of UGH figures on ebay because I haven't seen a single one anywhere. I've gotten a few via trades, but I didn't think I'd be able to score two full sets that way.

And yes, I said two full sets... one to open and one to display loose. Those stupid silver stands and holo's made me buy two sets  :-[

Maybe it's just me and my bad luck at finding stuff...

I'm almost embarrased to say this now, but I fought off the temptation to buy one before, but now (of cuorse) I feel like my collection is incomplete, and I need one of these. Anyone have an extra?  :-\

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Computer Companies and customer service
« on: May 11, 2006, 07:35 PM »
All I had to read was "About a year and a half ago, I purchased a laptop from HP." I stopped right there.

I don't remember all the details, because it was back in the late 90's when I got my first PC, and it was an HP. All I can remember was that I called up one day because the CD writer that I had wasn't working. At the end of the third call I gave up, because the "techs" (and I use that term as loosely as possible) not only didn't fix the problem I was having, they somehow were able to cause the DVD drive that was also in the PC to stop working. That was the first - and last - time I called tech support of any kind.

Since that day, I've purchased quite a number of computer books, and learned pretty much all I needed to know. Enough so that I was able to build my last 2 computers, instead of purchasing them from anywhere. Those tech support people in any of those companies are a joke. I don't know where they find them, or how they can hire people who obviously don't know what they are doing.

What exactly are the issues you're having? More details please  :)

Kinda looks like a lightsaber hilt...

I personally like the Anakin without that plastic/leather piece a bit more but I still think you made this look outstanding.

Personally, so do I. The problem that arose from that was that I wanted to use the AOTC Anakin arms, since they had the elbow articulation. For some bizarre reason, the AOTC and ROTS torsos are two different shades of brown, so when I kept the ROTS torso with the AOTC arms, the colors didn't match. I decided to go with the AOTC torso and arms, because I ran into problems with the shoulder joints paint rubbing off. I had already tried to make a ROTS Anakin out of a Red Leader Obi Wan, and when I painted the torso it just came off immediately whenever I would move the arms. So I opted for the AOTC torso and arms, since the colors matched. I'm thinking that I need to go and trim down the sash a little bit, it does look a bit big.

One other strange thing about the Evolutions Anakin torsos - neither of them had a seam on the sides. I tried to split the torsos in half, like I always do, to swap the legs and arms out. But when I boiled them, there were no seams to split. The arms and hip/legs just kinda snap in.

can you still twist/turn the gloved part of the arm or did you have to permanately glue it on?

No, actually, I opted to just glue it on, since the new elbows have swivel articulation. I tossed around the idea of glueing some kind of post on the stump of the elbow, but that would have taken too long, and I get impatient when I'm working on any kind of figures.  :-\

Hasbro has not given us a decent ROTS Anakin yet, out of the several variations to be found, which is surprising since this movie actually focuses on him.

A while back when I got the Anakin Evolutions set, I thought it was good. Good, but not great. But not far from great. There were a few things I didn't like, and a few I didn't understand... AOTC Anakin has elbow articulation, ROTS Anakin didn't? ROTS Anakin has ankle articulation, AOTC Anakin doesn't? Didn't make any sense. So, when I was able to pick up an extra of this set (because no matter how bad a figure Hasbro makes turns out, I always need 1 unadulterated version in my collection. What can I say, OCD is a terrible thing), I decided to swap out the parts and make an Ulitimate Super Articualted ROTS Anakin (since I was never found of the AOTC version anyway).

I used the ROTS Anakin head and legs, and swapped out for the AOTC torso, arms, sash, and belt. I cut the right arm right after the elbow joint and added the ROTS glove, and maintained articulation on the elbow joint. There's not much more articulation I could add to this guy - neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, waist, hips, knees, and ankles. I had to trim down the AOTC torso neck, it was longer than the ROTS torso for some reason. I still want to work on the cape/robe, and I want  to paint his eyes Sith red, but it's too late and I'm too tired for that right now. That will be tomorrow nights project.

Now, on to Vader. This was another figure that I thought had great potential, but in the hands of Hasbro, we all know what that means. The silver string around the neck? Nice touch, but it should have been shorter than an inch long. The helmet won't stay on for ****. And the head under the helmet? Please...

First thing I did was shorten the silver string. I'd love to swap it out altogether, but I don't know if I have any chain small enough. I think it looks 100x better after being shortened. All I did was cut one end, and stuff it under the helmet collar. The second thing I did was to swap out the head with an extra from a #50 Crispy Anakin that I had. I figured this was supposed to be a ROTS Vader, so he wouldn't be all white under there yet. And, to my surprise, swapping out the head actually fixed the helmet problem. I guess the #50 head is a little wider than the other head, because now the helmet stays on with no problem.

Yeah, I would say with dioramas and photo novels that you would pretty much have to work the box around your subject on a picture by picture basis. Which shouldn't be too hard, foamcore is fairly inexpensive, and you wouldn't be permanantly fusing it together, just a few pieces of masking tape and such, so you could easily take it apart and re-use the pieces, adding more or less each time depending on the size of the piece. The only thing you may need to do is to add another lamp or two, again depending on how big the subject would be.
