I was reading this article (http://www.starwarz.com/tbone/index.php?categoryid=16&p2_articleid=846) over at T'Bone's Star Wars Universe, which again discusses the rumors of a new box set in time for the 30th anniversary next year. Some rumors he is hearing deal with there being some more changes to the movies themselves, although details are sketchy right now. This might all be rumors, but I just thought I'd pass it along if interested.
I'm really not sure what to do about these releases on Sept 12th. Although we all know the shortcomings, there is a part of me that wants to have the original versions, even if they aren't anamorphic (I don't have a widescreen tv anyways). And even though I know it probably won't be the case, I will be kicking myself if I skip them and they aren't ever released again (properly). But, then again, I don't want to be buying these and then re-buying them next year to get the "new improved" versions once again. I haven't been stung as much as many have with the multiple releases in the past (I got the original versions on VHS when I was in high school, bought the special editions on VHS when I was in college, and bought the DVD versions in 2004), but I could see how this would anger people - because I don't want to have to keep buying them. As much as it is my decision, I know if there are new scenes or something, I'll probably end up wanting to buy them. Anyways, just wanted to pass along the info if anyone was interested. He also discusses soundtracks.

I think that would be the only way for me to get these is if they had the Biggs scene in the movie, or some of the cut scenes from ESB or ROTJ in them. I know one of the laserdisc versions had a sort of director's cut version....or at least it was rumored.
-
I would just be satisfied if they actually included these deleted scenes as extras. It would actually be kind of fun if there was an OPTION to watch the entire movies with deleted scenes included...just to see how it good or badly it would flow. But that will never happen....I kind of wonder if the deleted scenes will ever be put out on DVD in one way or another? I thought for sure it would happen after they put them on the CD-ROM Behind the Magic. But so far...nope.
Anyway as far as rumored tinkering goes. Eh, whatever. I am used to it by now.

Saw this posted at Snowtroopers:
SW 6 DVD release (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html#082406)
8/24/06
Also today... a follow-up on something we've been telling you to expect for quite while now. 2007, as you may well be aware, is the 30th anniversary of the original Star Wars' debut in theaters. You'd have to be stupid not to know that Lucasfilm is going to have big DVD release plans with which to celebrate the anniversary, and we've been telling you that was the case for many months now. Indeed, during our last visit to the Ranch (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/skywalker/page2.html) for the DVD release of Episode III, producer Rick McCallum confirmed that a box set of all six films was going to happen eventually, and animation director Rob Coleman even let it slip that the puppet Yoda from Episode I had already been replaced with a new CG Yoda to match Episodes II & III for the "future" release. T-Bone over at Star Wars Universe recently speculated about this box set (http://www.starwarz.com/tbone/index.php?categoryid=16&p2_articleid=846), and we've been quietly checking in with our industry sources on it as well. Well, we've confirmed it: There IS a big, ultimate, 6-film Star Wars anniversary DVD box set planned for 2007. There will be more changes to the films, and there will be LOTS of new, never-before-seen special features - all the good stuff that was held back by Lucasfilm from the original Trilogy DVD release a few years ago. Think deleted scenes and more. We don't know if good, genuinely-REMASTERED versions of the original theatrical editions of the films will be included or not (though how you could call the set "ultimate" without them, we don't know). We don't expect high-definition versions yet, as those formats are just too new. We don't have ANY other details for you yet, so please don't ask. But as you consider whether or not to purchase the "limited edition" DVDs due on 9/12... we thought you should know that more IS absolutely on the way next year. 'Nuff said for now.
As always, please keep in mind that titles discussed here are tentative and are subject to change until officially announced by the studios.
Stay tuned...

So it looks like more changes on the way. Speculations anyone?
My thoughts:
All Troopers to have Jangos voice. We will see Jangos face underneath the Stormtrooper helmet.
Qui-Gon will reappear in E3. Finally explaining what the hell is going on with the Jedi disappearring acts.
-
I actually like the idea of a CG Yoda in Episode 1. The puppet didn't look very good at all.
I wonder if they'd put a spirit Qui-Gon at the end of ROTJ? Eww...I hope I didn't just give Lucas an idea. :-\
-
Another 40 bucks getting spent on DVDs.
Also there's rumors of an IJ set in '08!
-
Well I am probably going to skip this year's DVD's and wait for 07. I just hope they include the originals on the 07 set as well :-\
-
I hope these are the final sets & Lucas just keeps re-releasing these, becuase I'm starting to get sick of buying DVDs. But I have to. ::)
-
i don't know how you guys do it, well i actually do. i used to get the vhs rehashs but only : 87,97,00. and 2000 was mainly because i diden't get widescreen in 97 and the boxes matched TPM. but they'd haft to practically remake half the films for me justfy the boxed set next year. or promise some kind of virtual reality format that can hook up with the set in like a couple years time....which would be pretty great....

Same here

I would buy it. ;D

GREED: You can never release too many versions of the same movie.

TheForce.net has a Lego article that hints to a 30th aniversary DVD set, so all you patient ones who passed on the latest gouging-er I mean-release may be rewarded. I think it would be significant if they release it in May.
I hope this will be the ultimate collection, the one we've all been waiting for, but Geoge Lucas tends always to leave us wanting more.
What we want;
Episodes 1-6 special editions
Episodes 1-6 as they were originally released(anamorphic)
deleted scenes from all movies
Commentaries documentaries, and other extras
Chances are George will leave something out so we can buy it again in 2008.
Fantasy DVD set;
All the above
Holiday special
Ewok movies
Ewoks the complete series
Droids the complete series
Clone wars the complete series
Complete soundtracks for all movies
Parody clips (SNL, Simpsons, Family Guy, etc)
R2-D2 shaped DVD case

Not a chance. I mean, it'd be cool and all, and I can kinda see some sort of theatrical re-release in May (although that would be unlikely, as they'd be directly competing with next summer's blockbusters like Spidey 3).
But no way they'd release any new DVD set in May. Not only would they be too close to the discs that just came out last month, but they'd be missing out on a ton of Christmas sales, too.
And I think, with the exception of the first Clone Wars disc, every SW DVD they've released has come between the months of September and December. That's all three prequels, three sets of the originals, Clone Wars Volume 2, and the Ewoks and Droids discs. Even the Indy sets, too, if you want to include those. They just really like releasing crap around this time of year.
I think the only time they've really strayed from that pattern (besides CW) was when they released the Phantom Menace VHS tape in April, 2000.

We will never see the Holiday special, george hates it. Everything else would be cool! :)

It will happen but not until each one is released individually.
They have many years to continue to take our money.
As to 2007 release, that is not a surprise. 30th? C4? DVD?
It will be a crazy and expensive year.
My concern, as others have post, they will leave something out.
They really need to do a 12 pack. Each film comes with its own BTS (deleted scenes, usual bells and whistles w/kitchen sink), updated commentaries (actors on one, ILM (on aoother), Lucas, etc. (on its own). I did not care for them being all at once for the 2004 release.
Always felt Empire of Dreams was excellent but it should have been longer.
But I have a feeling they will wait for another anniversay.
It's not over yet.
-
ESB would make since, but probally TPM or AOTC. ::)
10years of Jar Jar...WOO! :P
-
We will never see the Holiday special,
trust me man..you dont want to see it...i wanted to see it....badly....key word..WANTED :) the cartoon was pretty cool though.
-
With the Box Set coming, I was wondering if they do all of the formats (DVD, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray) that would be sweet.
And is Lucas going to re-re-release SW Saga onto Theaters.
-
id like to see rots remastered with the mothma/bail/fang/padme scenes inserted into the movie, and new Order 66/temple attack and separatist slaughter scenes inserted.
-
Maybe not? (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html#022307)
-
Well I am not surprised really. They did go to the well too many times in a row there. They should have just waited to put the "original" version on the 6 box set and sold it at the end of this year. Oh well. They have nobody to blame but themselves. Personally, I can wait anyway.
-
I agree. I have what I want of SW on DVD, so I'm good.
-
Yeah, it wouldn't necessarily surprise me if they held off now either. It seems they went a little too crazy with all of the releases the past couple of years. Part of me wouldn't mind if they just took their time and did "ultimate super duper fantastic" versions of the OT one at a time - like putting out a new version (with deleted scenes, both versions of the movie, and I guess any updates George has thought up) of ANH this year, then ESB when its 30th Anny hits, and the same for ROTJ. It would spread things out a bit at least that way :P. Of course, like Ben mentioned, I'd be happy with what I have at this point too if this is it. But you know it isn't ;).
-
"I just don't get Team Lucas anymore. They release the same DVDs we all already own last year and try to pull the "Hey, we're doing you all a favor by giving you the special non-anamorphic, zero-effort original versions as a bonus item!" and then they're actually flummoxed when they don't sell. What the REST of us know, is that they didn't sell because they were crap, and because everyone is waiting for the damn box set."
I think that paragraph from the article pretty much sums it up.
-
Now that Blu-Ray has won, when do you think we'll have the master box set, this time around?
-
Maybe this August to coincide with the Clone Wars 3D premiere (unlikely since I think we would've heard by now) ... maybe 2009 to coincide with the 10th anniversary of TPM or the DVD of the Clone Wars movie ... maybe 2009 or 10 to coincide with the premiere of the live-action series.
I doubt they'll just drop it into the release schedule on its own; it's a question of what they will piggyback it onto for maximum effect.
-
It definitely won't be this year. Lucasland has their hands full enough already with Clone Wars, Force Unleashed, and Indy. It'll be some year when they don't have anything else going on, anything else to promote.
And if it takes them as long to do Blu-Ray as it did with DVD, we could be in for a long wait. I wouldn't be surprised if they waited until 2012 and did it with the 35th anniversary. (Hope they release it before the world ends late that year.)

No 6 movie set, but it looks like we're getting trilogy box set releases this fall. The Official Site (http://www.starwars.com/movies/saga/20080826news.html#rss) has details, but it doesn't sound like there is anything new for those of us who already have the two disc sets of the movies. Its funny, the article even plainly states basically that "if you bought the earlier ones, you don't need these". Its crazy how many times these get re-released, although the packaging for these isn't too bad. I will say too, at least around here, it isn't exactly easy to find each and every one of the six movies on DVD (at least the individual releases). For the longest time, ROTS was sold out around town, and the OT ones are hit and miss as well (although you can find the OT packed together). Anyways, just thought I'd pass this along.
