Turkey & Gravy soda on the table for Thanksgiving (http://www.boston.com/news/odd/articles/2003/11/24/turkey__gravy_soda_on_the_table_for_thanksgiving/)

11/24/2003

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Thanksgiving dinner with all the fixings: cranberry sauce, stuffing and turkey gravy-flavored soda. Yummy?

In the latest food fad to emerge in the United States, Seattle specialty soda maker Jones Soda Co. scored a hit this week with the introduction of a limited batch of Turkey & Gravy-flavored soda.

The tan-colored soda sold out in just three hours after an initial batch was put up for sale on the company's Web site Friday, a spokeswoman for the company said.

Proceeds from the online sale, where two bottles of Turkey & Gravy soda sold for about $11, were donated to Toys for Tots, a children's charity. Local retailers will start selling the soda Monday.

Jones Soda said it would be up to local stores to set prices for Turkey & Gravy soda. Other sodas from the company typically cost $1 to $1.50.

This isn't the company's first experiment in exotic carbonation. Fish tacos and ham flavors have also been offered as promotional soda flavors.

That's disgusting.

Reminds me of when the old "Scratch and Sniff" stickers suddenly realized they could add disgusting smells too - like Skunk... ::)  Some combinations of products are just better left alone!

"Local retailers will start selling the soda Monday."

...under the updated brand name, "Thanksgiving Leftover Soda."

Wow. Someone's finally successfully marketed backwash, and all it took was a website. God Bless the Internet.

Looking forward to July and "Hotdog & Chips Soda." Mmm.

Any Scandanavians in the audience may know what Lutefisk is...for those that don't:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ingredients:
1 kg dried fish
100 g caustic soda
30 liters of water

Saw the fish in suitably sized pieces or leave it whole. Put in water. Leave in water in a cool place for 5-6 days if cut in pieces, 8 days if the fish is whole. Change the water every day.

For the luting use a plastic or stainless steel or enamelled tub (the enamel must be unchipped). Wooden vessels, china or stoneware may also be used.

Place the fish in the tub with the skin side up. Dissolve caustic soda in the water, pour over the fish until covered complete by lut water. Leave the fish in a cold place for 3-4 days.

When the fish is completely luted, it will be well swollen and you should be able to put a finger through it. Rinse the fish and leave in cold water 4-6 days. Change water every day.

If the fish stays in water for too long after the luting, it may be soft and difficult to boil. Test boil a piece, if you are uncertain.

Do not make lutefisk in the warm season.

1 kg dry fish makes about 5 kg lutefisk.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Anyway...just thought the people at Jones should try Lye Soaked Cod as their Christmas Flavor

You know, I've never seen Jones Soda here in OKC, but I was reading on another board that up in Seattle, they have a bubblegum-flavored soda which is quite good.

'Course, you don't hear about that.  You hear about the turkey and gravy-flavored soda, and the fish taco-flavored soda, and the ham-flavored soda. . .

GROSS!!!

A quick search of Ebay nets the following results:

Single bottles of this swill going for ten, fifteen, and twenty dollars, and "cases" (which are two bottles) going for as much as sixty dollars in at least one case!

Ebay link (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&cgiurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Fws%2F&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&ht=1&from=R7&query=jones+turkey+soda)

That's nuts.

But, you know, if this stuff has tryptophan in it, that would really be something. . .

Just got back from the store and they had a big display of Pepsi Holiday Spice

I bought a bottle (I'm a sucker for new soda pops) and it's a definitely strange sensation in my mouth.  There is definitely some cinammon mixed in which I don't know if it works well with the cola taste.  There's something else there too

I also just found out there is a Forum dedicated just to Soda Pops and the people that love them

I saw these when I went to Target to pick up the DVD today.
Jones is a regular staple around here (they test market all sorts of weird flavors all over the place) but this box set wasn't appealing to me.

Pumpkin, yeah.
Cranberry...possibly.

But the rest?  Nah.

There won't be any Turkey & Gravy soda pop this Thanksgiving, I'm afraid, but fear not:  Jew or Gentile, you'll still be able to guzzle down another important holiday dinner this year.

Jones Soda promises ham, tree, doughnut flavored beverages (http://www.usatoday.com/news/offbeat/2007-11-10-holiday-sodas_N.htm)

Quote
SEATTLE (AP) — Jones Soda Co., a Seattle-based purveyor of offbeat fizzy water is selling holiday-themed limited-edition packs of sodas that include flavors such as ham and latkes.

The Christmas pack will feature such flavors as Sugar Plum, Christmas Tree, Egg Nog and Christmas Ham. The Hanukkah pack will have Jelly Doughnut, Apple Sauce, Chocolate Coins and Latkes sodas, the company said in a statement Friday.

It even will be kosher, the company says — including the ham.

The packs will go on sale Sunday, with a portion of the proceeds to be given to charity, the company said.

Jones' products feature original label art and frequently odd flavors. Last year's seasonal pack was Thanksgiving-themed, with Green Pea, Sweet Potato, Dinner Roll, Turkey and Gravy, and Antacid sodas.

For its contract to supply soda to Qwest Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks NFL football team, Jones came up with Perspiration, Dirt, Sports Cream and Natural Field Turf. The company — fortunately or unfortunately — prides itself on the accuracy of the taste.

Jones also makes more traditional flavors, including root beer, cherry and strawberry sodas.

This is gonna save me so much time in the kitchen this Christmas.

That pack does look pretty good, but do you know what would be even better, for our Jewish friends?  A Jones Soda Limited Edition Nine-Pack Gift Set, in the shape of a Hanukkah menorah.  If there's a better way to celebrate the rededication of the Temple after the successful Jewish revolt against the Seleucid monarchy, than by drinking a different unusually-flavored carbonated beverage, every night, for eight straight nights in December, I don't know what it is.

I see these in the store every year but have never actually pulled the trigger. This year would be as good a time as any to start.

I'm also curious what kind of mixed drinks you could get from these. Jelly doughnut and Kahlua? Ham and Southern Comfort? Christmas tree and vodka? They probably all fall under "good in theory and deadly in practice," but you never know.

J&D Foods, which specializes in bacon, has partnered with Jones Soda "to create a special-edition bacon-flavored drink just in time for the holidays." Because nothing says Merry Christmas like the taste of liquefied fried swine.

J&D Foods owner Justin Esch tells AOL News, "[Jones] knows soda. We know bacon. We were destined to merge our technologies for something big. We've already made bacon beauty products, bacon stationery and edible bacon products, so something drinkable was next." (The only way Esch can top this is by strapping on water skis, stapling a couple pounds of bacon to a life vest, and jumping over a bacon-flavored shark.) For just $10, you get two bottles of bacon-flavored soda, a bag of Cheddar BaconPop popcorn, a tube of bacon lip balm and a packet of brand-new bacon-flavored country gravy. And if you don't dig on swine, the company also sells a Tofurky and gravy soda.

"Once it hits your lips, it's so good!"

Quote
A parade of New Yorkers grimaced and retched after sips of the pig-inspired pop unveiled by Jones Soda Co. - or just at the sound of it.

"That tastes disgusting," griped Tyrone Wallace, 26, of Brooklyn. "It made me want to throw up."

Jones boasts that its bacon soda is vegetarian friendly and kosher. Those who tried it said it tastes like swill.

Half of more than 40 people approached refused the taste test outright.

"You are supposed to eat bacon not drink it," snapped Arlette Cepeda of the Bronx.

David Horowitz was among a brave handful of Orthodox Jews willing to sample the swine-flavored soda.

"My mother is rolling over at this one, but I will give it a try," said Horowitz, 46, who provided a running commentary as he guzzled.

"Tastes like beef or something. It's quite strong, and thick. Oh! And it is gross! Who would want that?"

At Peter Luger's steak house in Brooklyn, the reaction among meat-eaters was similar.

"As much as I love bacon, it just turns me off," said waiter Otto Quintus, 65.

After catching a whiff, bartender Jessie Bilotta turned away.

"Oh God, no! It smells like dog poop," Bilotta, 28, said. "I wouldn't drink that even if it had alcohol in it."

Seattle-based Jones Soda teamed up with J&D's Foods, the maker of bacon-flavored products such as Bacon Salt and Baconaisse, to produce the burgundy-colored beverage.

For months, a team of "flavor experts" worked to simulate the perfect bacon flavor without adding any real bacon.

The soda is being touted as part of a new cocktail, mixed with bourbon, an egg, cream, and soda water.

Bacon soda can be bought only online as part of a package that includes other bacon-related foods.

"Until now, it was impossible to guzzle your favorite breakfast meat, so this is a huge step for bacon lovers everywhere," said Jones Soda's Mike Spear.

At least one New Yorker agrees.

"It tastes just like it!" crowed Kci Rosado, a 16-year-old Bronx student. "That's amazing."

I'm running out of ideas for gag gifts for my company's Yankee Swap (previous years include a plunger with a hidden Home Depot gift card and a Snuggie), so this might be right up my alley.  Considering 85% of the gifts given are booze, it should be easy to trick some poor sap into thinking they're getting alcohol with it.  >:D
