Title: Walmart Vintage Collection TIE Fighter
Post by: Jesse James on July 12, 2018, 11:54 PM
Jayson over at the Yak teased this and Robot Kingdom spilled the beans completely.  Vintage Collection “Big Wing” TIE Fighter (http://yakfaceforums.com/main/2018/07/12/vintage-collection-imperial-tie-fighter/)

Apparently Walmart isn’t don’t banking on bigger ticket exclusives.

I’m excited to get a big wing grey TF at this point.

Ooooh.... I don’t have a big wing TIE.  I might actually pick this up.

Very nice.  Based on the packaged image I am liking the paint color/apps.  That's been a sticking point for me when it comes to TIE Fighters over the years.  I hope they show this at SDCC next week.

I'm both cheering and screaming. Arguably my biggest want (search my post history!), exclusive to the worst retailer.

I have that big wing TIE that was released 8-9 years ago at Target - which is great save for the pink-tinted cockpit glass...  I’m hoping this will have the super-detailed TIE cockpit with the controls and removable seat.  It will be great to finally get a decent version of one of the most ubiquitous ships in the SW universe, just stinks that it’s at Walmart.

No official comment on price yet, but based on the overseas pricing that has turned up it looks like it will be in the $75-80 range in the US.

I spotted one of these in my local Walmart today.  It’s impressive to look at, and it’s great to see something new on the shelf. But the price scanned at $79 even, so I’m going to hold off for a while.

That would be awesome as I aim to replace 8 of my 9. I can use my Shadows version as a wing leader, but this is pretty much the ultimate cockpit and I have to replace the outdated ones.

Has anyone spotted this on the west coast (in California) recently?  I checked a few Walmart’s in my area last weekend but came up empty handed (though I did find some other items I was looking for).  I’m just curious and always wary about Walmart and their irregular distribution antics...

This was spotted near Pittsburgh tonight.  Not by me but a buddy.  I want one but man $ is tight now thanks to the EE TVC bonanza.  :-\

Yes. In the San Fernando Valley. I know a couple of people who picked it up. However, of the 6 Walmarts in the SFV and Simi Valley, half do not and are not planning carrying Vintage Collection items.  >:(

Thanks everyone.  Good to know they have made it out west.  However That’s sort of what I’ve seen with my local stores in central CA, not a lot of them were carrying the vintage items...  The hunt continues!

Found three of the TIE fighters at a local Walmart today.  It’s great to have a proper-looking TIE after all these years.  But did anyone else notice the pilot’s helmet isn’t technically removable?  Mine appears to have the head piece, but it appears unpainted and glued in.  I’ll just replace it with my Lt. Oxixo figure.

I actually regularly buy at full price.  The tank... I bought a sail barge... almost every vehicle on day one for all four Disney movies...

For some reason when I saw this I didn’t feel good about $80...

I bought one for $80, mainly out of the thrill of seeing it for the first time along with TVC Range Troopers and Tank Drivers right as two Hasbro reps were stocking them.

For $40, I'd buy 1-2 more...

I'm having a tough time being supportive of buying a vehicle at full price that's in what, it's 4th or 5th release?  The paint apps look nice, but I've seen this on the shelf several times and once I saw the price I just had to hold off.
Title: Re: Walmart Vintage Collection TIE Fighter
Post by: Jesse James on October 26, 2018, 06:22 PM
The funny thing is all the people clamoring for this that now don’t wanna pay...  I didn’t care much about it myself and I’m probably gonna wait but man I remember a lot of “we need a TVC big wing TIE” BS and it was a lot of piss and vinegar from what I’ve seen.  Another moment where collectors demand with their mouths and not their wallets.

Again if it’s not a big deal to you I totally get waiting tho.

The tank I viewed as totally worth the price for a new toy...  for the TIE it’s not horrid but the writing is on the wall on this one for sure. 😬
Title: Re: Walmart Vintage Collection TIE Fighter
Post by: Muftak on October 26, 2018, 08:22 PM
I wondered if any other $80 vintage vehicle would accompany the Tank when it was announced. Now I find these TIEs every time I go in Wally, but no Tanks to be found yet at retail. I know it is akin to Luddite behavior, but I really wanna buy my Tank at brick n mortar to support the business model...

And I will gladly pick up the Solo TIE over the Vintage version too...again, if and when I find one. Plenty of Walkers to be had, no little TIEs.

I’d like the little TIE too because it is different...  I’m assuming the tank will hit before Christmas? 🤷‍♂️ That one is weird.

Around me Walmart’s have these TIEs falling off the bottom shelf. If EE is taking orders that must mean there are more of these in a warehouse somewhere. It’s just never gonna sell at this price. Eventually Walmart will clearance this out and EE may be forced to drop the price.

$79 but there have been some reports that some WalMart stores already had these on clearance.  I just ran a Brickseek search to see if I could find some discounted, but they're all full price in my area.

For all the complaining about finding nothing new I've been doing, every Walmart I've stopped at in Illinois and Wisconsin over the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays had plenty of TIE's, always $79.99.

I got one for Christmas, so it's done - but they're definitely going to be $40 eventually.

I mean, what was going on at that sales meeting?

Hasbro: You know that reissued AT-ST toy we sold you last year for the highest price its ever seen?

Wal*Mart: How could we forget? It's clogging shelves as we speak...

Hasbro: We were thinking you'd love to follow that up with a reissued TIE Fighter at a price heretofore undreamt of for 2018.

Wal*Mart: We'll take a boatload!

Hasbro: And we also have this brand new vehicle collectors have been clamoring for from "Rogue One..."

Wal*Mart: Bah! New vehicles? Semi-current media? Sell that **** on Amazon.

I'd be curious who is driving the crazy price on this one - it its Hasbro, Wal-Mart, or some combo.  For all we know Hasbro sold it to Wal-Mart assuming the price point was going to be $50 and they marked it up a ton more.

At some point you would think either or both the toy managers at Wal-Mart or Hasbro would do the math and figure it out.  At the very least it must look bad if your stuff is all dusty and getting marked down, even if at the end of the day you're making good margins.

Hasbro's been saying for years that the tooling costs keep going up. Said that if the Big AT AT was released today, it'd have to retail for $250.

But all the tooling is complete.  Am I missing something here?

I think so. And me as well. My mind says the same thing, but apparently it's a factor. I don't know what that means exactly on the manufacturing/production end. But, I've interview Hasbro many time and they keep saying that tooling is a huge factor. Jedi-Jman can probably shed some light.
Title: Re: Walmart Vintage Collection TIE Fighter

Possibly.  I keep going back to a friend in the 501st who manufactures armor pieces....if you are vac-forming the parts, you can go as long as your molds are good.  If you make your moulds out of aluminum, you can go pretty much forever without having to sculpt/machine new ones.

Your average garage armor maker is not machining aluminum moulds...but you'd think they guys who hold the license can make them out of something that would last.
Title: Re: Walmart Vintage Collection TIE Fighter
Post by: Muftak on January 14, 2019, 01:25 PM
I was under the impression that the primary concern with the increase in price to reissue the big vehicles was the jump in factory wages overseas.

It is also key to know Hasbro uses different factories today than they did 10 years ago, and it has been stated that some of the time the factory itself owned the molds.
Title: Re: Walmart Vintage Collection TIE Fighter
Post by: Mister Skeezler on January 14, 2019, 02:43 PM
It's probably a lot of things. China/US trade issues, TRU closing and Hasbro trying to recoup losses (or protect against future losses), rising prices in general, Hasbro knowing collectors are masochistic and will buy them anyways...the list goes on and on.

Has anyone had issues with the latch inside the wing sowing mechanism on their TVC TIE Fighter snapping over time?  This is the latch on the inside of the pylon, surrounded by the spring, that holds the wing in place and which when lifted, causes the wing to come off. There is a hooked end to the latch that snapped off.

This happened to my first TVC TIE fighter after about a month, so I returned it and got a new version, only to have it happen again after about four months...  My TIE has been displayed standing on its wings on a shelf and I’m not using the “blast off wing” feature at all.  I’ve not had this issue with older TIE’s with the same feature, including TIE Interceptors.

Not wanting to get another TIE Fighter, I just unscrewed the model, removed the springs, and stuck the wings back in with a little masking tape to keep them in tight.

I checked Brickseek for pricing and quantities on the TIE Fighter for my area.  The one store where it was marked down to $40 is now sold out.  There are other stores where the TVC TIE is marked down to $59, but there's still a significant amount of stock.  I think I would probably be a buyer at the $40 clearance price, but wouldn't turn up my nose at the $30 price.

Strange, I can see this on Brickseek for $19, but when I call Walmart they tell me it's online only, and they don't have them in stores (it's $60 online). Am I Brickseeking wrong?  ???
Title: Re: Walmart Vintage Collection TIE Fighter
Post by: Jesse James on May 3, 2019, 05:04 PM
If it is on Brickseek it should give you a semi current store count on the inventory.  Don’t trust it totally though, as I have found it to be off often.

It said my nearest store had 10 at one point and they literally never had that many at full price or less and then suddenly the count went to zero, once what they did have sold out at $25.

I watched them like a hawk and around Pitt they are flying out at $25 and $19.  I took 6 from a local store the other day.  Made a special trip to my county seat, or as I like to call it, “Deliverance Town”, and they had 6 when BS had said they had 9 for several days.  🤷‍♂️

I did same stuff with the ATST, which I now feel sort of dumb having as many as I do, but they were cheap so whatever.  I wanted a few grey TIEs though so I caved.

These don’t store as well I’m finding.

Yeah I wanted to get two to display, but every Walmart I've called doesn't have them now, even though brickseek says they do.

Aside from the cockpit and paintjob, is there any difference between this and the big wing TIE from Target?

You may want to go and find the clearance aisle at the store Lando, cuz that is where they were taken and those can be damn near anywhere in any Walmart.

The one I hit had 0 in the back at toys but they were all up front in their clearance aisle.

One store sort of nearby has 10 still it says.  No clue how they’re hanging onto those at $19 when almost every other store in my search area is out or has an inaccurate count saying they have some.  Weird.

Nuts! I went to a couple of Walmarts near me that said they had one or two, and they were cleared out. The third, which is about an hour away said it had one, but when I called the rep told me there were pieces missing (kudos for her for saving me the trip). I'm kicking myself for not knowing where the clearance aisle is earlier (I've just been checking the toy section). I probably just missed these, but I guess a little weathering on the Target TIEs should ease the pain.

I just didn't feel like paying full price for another TIE release, but sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.  :-\

Found my TVC Walmart Big Wing TIE in pieces today - one wing and cockpit ball on the floor, one wing still on the table.  Tried to put the wings back on and neither would stay on.  Shook the cockpit ball a bit and heard the little hook/latches rattling around.  Took apart the ball and yep - plastic on both wing latch mechanisms was really dry/brittle with the ends broken off.

I'm guessing one wing latch must have broken, then the spring pushed the wing and ball apart.  The other wing likely broke when the ball/wing hit the hardwood floor. :(

I'm sure I can find a way to permanently attach the wings for long-term display, but thought I would post a word of warning to you guys (or, in this case draw attention back to tmanthegreat's original word of warning).

I removed the springs from my TIE by simply unscrewing they upper and lower halves of the cockpit ball. Then I wrapped some duct tape around the wing pegs so they stay in their sockets securely, but can still be removed if desired. My TIE has probably sat on its wings for over a year And a half now without any issues.
