Title: Kubrick book?
Post by: spookedhippie on May 12, 2013, 05:04 PM
Ok guys you can call me crazy... but hey. David Tree, who does the farthest shows here in the uk, asked me to do a presentation on Kubricks for the next Farthest show it got me thinking. Loads of fans it seems put out books for fans and as of yet there is nothing out on Kubricks, most people just confuse them for Lego. So...

(http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d125/spookedhippie/testpage_zps12716679.png) (http://s34.photobucket.com/user/spookedhippie/media/testpage_zps12716679.png.html)

This is a VERY rough idea of where I was thinking I might go so please ignore all the things like graphics, this is literally something I've cooked up in 5 minutes on Publisher. As the Kubrick line takes a huge amount of its cues from the vintage line I was thinking a book that celebrated the link, so rather than just a page by page count of each Kubrick figure, show the vintage figure along with it (might get a bit stumped on some but for the most part I think most of them are there).

Any thoughts?

That's a fantastic idea.  I've been waiting for this book for a long time.  If this could be done for $70-$100 per copy and be as exhaustively comprehensive as possible it would be a winner for me.  Watch out for the Disney Legal hammer.

Thanks dude, yeah on the Disney front, not sure how to sort that...I mean loads of fan books are out so must be an easy way...

And I do want to have almost everything in... Just got to find the bits and pieces I'm missing from my own collection...

It is definately very cool, and I would be down for one for sure. I've been meaning to get good pics and do catalog for myself, this would save me time and look way better!

Lots of the figures were never made by Kenner.  :-\

I think its a cool idea, but would like to see more comments or visuals.  I'd ad least put in the side and back shots for each figure and a group shot where you can.  Maybe highlight if the figure is entirely new or uses some rehased parts, whether it was available on cards, etc.  I do like the 4" figure reference - maybe a movie picture reference as well?  Might me some liability issues there I suppose.  Cab's right - you would have to show a few of the more modern 4" figures in some places, the the Prequel waves, Toy Fair Vader, Maul & Speeder, Holographic figures, etc.  I'd probably pay $30 for something with all that, but not up in the $70-100 range.

Thanks for the comments guys. Like I say early stages on page design but definitely on the back and side pics and was going to have the accessories as a single pic as well. Group shots most definitely, thought open each series with a group shot... And yeah annoying to have to use some modern, see how that part pans out. Anybody any ideas on who I'd need to talk to to make sure this could get out without upsetting licensing? Medicom maybe? Lucasfilm? Going to start work on getting the pages properly laid out, will keep everyone updated! Again thanks for the support!

Its my understanding that you own anything you photograph or record unless you are doing so from a copy of someone else's work.  For example, you can put pictures of your NFL jersey in your book, but you could get in trouble for using the NFL's picture of the Jersey or even a picture taken of the game without their written consent.  From a toy aspect, as long as you use your own pictures of the Kubricks and the 4" Figures, I think you would be fine.  However, you would want to secure Disney permission to include pictures or screen caps from the movies themselves.

There's some light background on this via the site below...

Thanks dude, most of the stuff will be from my collection and any willing fans of pieces I don't have, so on that front should be ok. I'm guessing that would be the advantage of only having toy shots... Hmmm... I've contacted a few authors of other Star Wars fan books so that would hopefully give me some insight as to how they did it...

Love it! Like the Kub/vintage fig picture idea (modern version is fine if the vintage fig doesn't exist). I'd be in for 70-100. Keep us posted on progress

Jedijman you were spot on, spoke to Gus and all I need are photos that are mine (or of willing volunteers on things I don't have) and a disclaimer and there should be no problems! Looks like this is a definite go!

Cool - can't wait to see what you come up with!

Ok couple of quick questions for everyone... Hardback or paperback? Obviously higher cost with the former...

And second, carded kubricks? Already this is shaping up to be a big book and I only have two carded as I'm more of the loose collector. Would people want the carded in or happy with the series and box sets?
Title: Re: Kubrick book?
Post by: Jayson on May 15, 2013, 04:35 PM
I would say have a carded section (2-page spread?) that shows the card releases.

(Late to the party here, but I've have for a long time considered a project like this, but have never had time to work something up.)

Edit. You know what would be cool? If the book came in a foil "blind bag" that you would have to open - just like the figures.  ;)

Post by: spookedhippie on May 15, 2013, 05:41 PM
Lol that would be awesome! Yeah I think the carded all together on a few pages if I can getcthecoics will have to do, probably the same for the 400% ones as well. Just done pages for all the series and box sets ready to age text and photos and already on page 228!

Then you should have some chase books, too.

Lol, one for every 96 regular ones?

Look's awesome thus far. I would go with a softback cover like Coining the Galaxy that James Gallo, Mark Salotti & Jeff Correll did. Same as Duncan & Gus did with the Cast & Crew Items book.

I'm sure a few of us can supply pics if needed of various Kub's that you do not have. Even the odd surprise.  ;)

Brilliant thanks dude! It's coming along very nicely, getting a light tent delivered this week and will get the actual photos I want, so will post a bit more of an update. So far it looks like its going to be a rather large 350 pages ish, covering all the basic figures, box sets and cardbacks... Didn't realise it would be so big!

Would people be bothered if the book had an isbn number? I'm still up in the air about this...
Title: Re: Kubrick book?
Post by: DSJ™ on May 26, 2013, 05:37 PM
Will that include the 400% Kubs?

As for an isbn number, sure why not. Think most books have them.

Yup they'll be in as well, want to make this as comprehensive as possible

Thought I'd provide an update. Text is all done up to series 9 chases. Had my light tent, lights and everything delivered yesterday so thought I'd do a quick test with the camera... after some editing....

Thought I'd give an update! Had a personal problem that needed dealing with over the summer but have kept on at this. Have fifteen more of the carded to write for, so yes will include all kubricks, and then its on to the picture taking. Think I underestimated how long this project would take but certainly making major headway. As it stands the thing is pulling in at 306 pages...

Thought I'd give another update, all the writing has been done and now I'm in the process of taking all the pics and editing them.... There's a lot! Will be asking peeps if they can pics of the things I don't have, think it will mainly be the carded

I know it's crazy! At the moment the pics of my collection are all taken are being painstakingly edited to fit the book... So far up to series 6... It's a far longer process than I imagined! Will post some pics up so you guys can see where it's heading

Beautiful.  Looks perfect to me.  Shut up and take my money.

***Edit*** Where are the Accessories?  Would have liked to have seen them being held in the figs hand.  Even still looks great.  Can't wait.

Thanks dude... Accessories are going to be separate at the bottom of the page, just need to take pics, but busy editing all the 500 odd photos so far!

Title: Re: Kubrick book?

It's looking great!  My only suggestion would be to maybe bullet point or table the text you're putting in.  For non-story based communication, I find bullets more digestable than long paragraphs.  If you put in a table, you could group the information into themes (first release, variations, case ratio, accessories, vintage comparison, etc.)  You might also think about putting a corresponding picture of the blind box on each figure's page, so people can easily reference them.  I always thought the blind box packing was cool by itself for each series.

Post by: spookedhippie on March 12, 2014, 03:45 PM
Thanks dude, welcome the suggestions. I don't have the blind boxes so will all depend how easy it'll be to get pics of them and space on the page, but will definitely look into it.... Love the bulletin point idea!

I have the original case boxes and figure boxes, and could get you some pictures if you need them. It would take a bit of attic-digging, but it's always fun to go through!
Title: Re: Kubrick book?
Post by: spookedhippie on March 12, 2014, 10:17 PM
Oh brilliant, thanks dude! Well I'll get the rest of the pics taken first and see how I'm doing on space.... But think ill definitely take you up on that!

I can help with the chases too if you need pictures, though my photography skills are fairly limited.

Thanks dude, think it'll be the dx chases ill struggle with... Will sort a list of what's missing once I'm a bit further with the project.... And thanks everyone for the support, after months of writing and editing photos I needed the boost!

Any progress on this spookedhippie. I saw it mentioned last year on SWFuk then forgot about it.

I just started collecting a few Boba Fetts.

Would love to see this finished and get hold of a copy.

Cheers Marc

Guys so sorry for the delay....bit of a manic year. I became ill with my eyes last year which put the book at a complete stand still and have since moved house and I'm getting married in three months! So busy busy... Writing wise the book is practically done minus edits, it's the pics, so I've listed the help of someone so this book can and will see the light of day!
