Title: Kotobukiya!
Post by: BigDumbWookiee on March 22, 2003, 06:07 PM
First, for those of you not familiar, here is a quick intro:

Kotobukiya makes 1:7 scale vinyl model figure kits, prepainted and snap together. Thusfar, they have released Darth Vader, Anakin, Obi Wan (AOTC) Mace Windu/Yoda, Jango Fett and three Clonetroopers (Infantry, Commander and Captain). They are known for sort of an artistic interpration of the characters and are not necessarily scene specific (although not as "out there" as the Unleashed figures).

FineMolds, another Japanese company as well as an offshoot of the Tamiya company (known for their very precise military models) makes 1:72 scale vehicular models. So far, they have released an XWing, TIE Fighter and Jedi Starfighter, and a Slave 1 is slated to be released, but little information is currently available.

If you're into these, what would you like to see made?

Kotobukiya:
Han Solo
Chewbacca
Slave Leia ;)
Jedi Luke
Palpatine
Maul
Dooku
Ewoks
Jawas

FineMolds:
Millenium Falcon
TIE Bomber, Interceptor, Advanced (AKA Darth's TIE Fighter)
YWing, BWing, AWing
Snowspeeder
ATAT
Republic Gunship
ATTE
Hailfire
Spider Droid

I could go on and on with what I'd like to see made! :)
Title: Kotobukiya Jango Fett
Post by: DSJ™ on April 14, 2003, 05:29 PM
I saw one of these in a comic/figure store this weekend.
They wanted $300. CDN.  :o
This looks like a very nice kit. Right up there with the Marmit Boba Fett.

There even on ebay right now.

Ive been collecting all of the Koto kits (you can see them here http://home.earthlink.net/~adamclowe/FrameSet.htm)

They are all absolutely beautiful, and Jango Fett is amazing!

It seems like these caught on kind of late, I finished my Koto collection a few months ago, but it seems that only as of late have people really started talking about them.

Hobbylink Japan has the Fine Molds Jedi Starfighter on sale for 30% off, about $15 plus shipping.   It looks very good to me.  I wish they had their Second Trilogy ships on sale.

Yes, that Jedi Starfighter is one fine kit. I have delt with Hobbylink Japan before with other items Non-SW related. I highly recommend the online order that they have.
There service is fantastic & there prices are way better than ebay & online stores that I have seen so far.

Very, very cool website there.  I just finished checking out all that the store had to offer, and I just wish I had a bunch of money to spend right now.  My birthday money is almost all gone.

Not sure if anyone has seen this Kotobukiya Darth Vader kit.

Looks like a very nice kit to go with the Marmit Boba Fett.

That is sweet!!!!  I sure wish I could win the lottery to buy that and everything else out there.

The Koto kits are all very nice, but not exactly compatible with the Marmit kits. Marmits are more like the 12 inch figures, these are slightly smaller, and similar to rotocast figures (but much higher quality).

Koto hasnt released a new Star Wars kit in a few months now, but have just released, or will soon release, some pretty cool looking Matrix Reloaded kits.

So far from Koto, we have got:
Vader
Anakin (AOTC)
Jango
Mace and Yoda (AOTC)
Obi Wan (AOTC)
Clone Trooper
Clone Trooper Captain
Clone Trooper Commander

This thing looks amazing, and at that scale must be very impressive!  $99 may be a little steep but I'm game!

Yeah, $99 each was what I was paying originally, and those were being imported from Japan. Seems like they could have knocked the price down a bit.

Well, it had to happen sooner or later! There is now going to be a blue Kotobukiya Clonetrooper statue, to go along with the white, yellow and red versions. It is exclusive to the Art of Star Wars exhibit, went on sale today and will be sold until the 18th, and ships in September.

He's No Good to Me Dead - I emailed you, but thought Id post as well. I am absolutely desperate to get help finding this piece.

If ANYONE can help, please let me know!

Perhaps the most accurate depiction of Darth Maul in any collectible to date.  Absolutely spot on!  A beautiful piece, albeit an expensive one.  I'd love to collect the Koto line, but I just don't have the space or money to do so.

I'll just have to settle for admiring them from afar for now.   :-\

Thanks for the pix though!   8)

How's 5,754 yen sound for the Koto Boba?  Spanky does not yet have it up, but they will around its release time.  They have Jango and Obi-Wan for that price, so I would assume they will offer Boba at that price as well.
Title: Re: Kotobukiya Boba Fett
Post by: DSJ™ on April 28, 2004, 10:22 AM
At todays rate of exchange roughly, 5,754 yen = $71.7265 CDN.
7,410 yen = $92.3678 CDN. Saving: $20.6413 CDN.
No shipping cost at HLJ thus far. If Spanky offers at the 5,754 yen, its the better bet.

Kotobukiya
A new Darth Vader edition from this fantastic series of non-articulated figures is due out this summer, which poses the Dark Lord on a lava base with saber ablaze. An Anakin figure is planned to pair up with this Vader edition, and will be sold separately. Future releases include Jedi Luke, Slave Leia, R2-D2 and C-3PO, and clone troopers. Fortunately, much of the Koto line is available to domestic and international shoppers through other distributors.

Very cool stuff!

Kotobukiya hits the mark dead on with their sculpts - I only have a few imperials - the exclusive sandtroopers and the first Vader.

IMO, this one beats the hell out of the first Vader - I don't like the "thrusting" position of Vader #1.

He looks like Blankman doing you know what.   :D

Since when does Wal-Mart sell Koto kits? They have a whole bunch in stock. Like Darth Maul (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4329471&dept=4171&path=0%3A4171%3A4172%3A450712) and more.

And at $99.54...they're priced to sell! ::)

Wal-tard has sold other "high" end stuff, so it's not a shock they are now offering kotos...

That Bly figure looks absolutely amazing.  I love the battle damage - enough to be noticed, but not overdone.

As a side note, I received my first Koto figure in the mail a couple days ago - Darth Maul.  Absolutely gorgeous.  I love the pose and his facial sculpt couldn't be better.  2 thumbs up.   :D

It appears that Koto has been reading the Hasbro marketing strategy book.   ::)  According to Action-Figure.com (http://www.action-figure.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=18956), upcoming releases from Koto announced at the UK Toy Fair will include a silver/chrome ROTS Darth Vader (http://www.action-figure.com/events/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=11230&g2_serialNumber=1) and Luke Stormtrooper (http://www.action-figure.com/events/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=11252&g2_serialNumber=1), possibly even the Boba Fett and Darth Maul.

On the more encouraging side, we may see pieces like:

"Luke Skywalker in classic Tatooine gear from A New Hope

Princess Leia Organa in classic white dress from A New Hope

C-3PO and R2-D2 two pack from the Saga

General Greivious from Revenge of the Sith"

Check out the pics here (http://www.action-figure.com/events/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=10406).

Koto has done some amazingly detailed poses with their figures, but human faces are NOT their specialty, as shown by the Luke Stormtrooper and Luke Bespin.  :(

They nailed the face on the Darth Maul (the only Koto I have), but since he's alien they didn't seem to have any problems doing that.

I'll definately be picking one up, there quite a bit more pricey than your average koto kit though. The regular Koto kits usually cost me £28 + 17.5% Vat from the wholesalers.
This one is £45 + 17.5% Vat so the uk rrp is probably going to be around 80-90

I have been reading online that it will be available (estimated) January 2007 with a tag of $99.

statueforum.com (http://www.statueforum.com/showthread.php?t=28753&page=3)

brianstoys.com (http://www.brianstoys.com/bvc2004/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=SSKBR2D2NC-3PO) has it listed at $99. with an estimated release of 8/1/2006.

www.casefresh.com (http://www.casefresh.com/starwars/kotobukiya/) has it listed at $135.

entertainmentearth.com (http://www.entertainmentearth.com/proderror.asp?badprod=1&number=DH10692) has pulled the preorder from the site, they had it listed with the item number "DH10692".

Nothing has shown up thus far at HLJ but it shoild in time.  :)

I don't really like the Silver pewter Vader. It looks a bit strange. But I think everything it's about fashion and repaints...

I too have a great deal with an online shop: Toy Palace. Marco Russe has great offers for me and I won't pass. I already have on pre-order the Droids set and Leia.

At home I already got: ROTS Vader, Scout Trooper, Sandtrooper and Snowtrooper. This week I'm expecting the Koto Stormie to arrive as well. I only collect OT imperials and Droids, I'm passing the Jedi and even clones, since I'm not a big fan of PT. Leia is an exception.  ;)

BTW here is my Kotobukiya collection (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v226/sergiurusu/Star%20Wars%20Action%20Figure%20collection/?start=all), or check out my signature or you can find it on this thread (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=3890.15)

I just received my Kotobukiya Stormtrooper. It is awsome, I didn't think I'd like it since it has a strange pose. But it looks pretty cool among the other troopers.

HELP: Is there anyone who can tell me about the arm pegs the stormie has? I was used to the rectangular pegs that fit into the statue's body, but the stormie has a different type of pegs (they are 2 like some arrows that open up and fit in the hole). Deos anyone have the same? Was this because it was released in 2003 and the otherKotos like Scout, Snowtrooper etc are newer versions?

If you are a completist you only can dream about having a really complete Koto collection. There are a few really rare and very expensive items (especially the 3 colored AOTC Clones). Better choose what you like instead of going for everything.

Good job ... those are the same pics  from regular SW.com. ;)

The Koto stuff has been flying under my radar but the sheer awesomitude of this made me sit up and take notice. It's kind of weird seeing that familiar, iconic image translated into 3D, but it turned out rad as hell. Vader, in particular, rocks balls like no tomorrow.

I like that they "punched up" the colors a little, although Luke's saber would have been better as bright yellow or straight clear, instead of this sort of urine color.
Title: Re: Kotobukiya!

Absolutely amazing!  I can't imagine how they could have done that translation from picture to 3D any better.  The blue reflection from Vader's saber is slick, and Luke looks great with the facemask.

What do these type of pieces usually cost?  I don't really like High end collectables that much, but this is very cool.

Anyone else have the feeling that Gentle Giant will jump on the McQuarrie bandwagon in fairly short order?  I think so and I'll wait for those to happen first.

Well I'm a big fan of KOTO, but those McQuarrie-stuff-figures just doesn't hit my brains positively, more badly negative :(.
I excualy hate all of the stuff (but that's personal) that's coming out this year that's related too McQuarrie >:(.

Just look at that Vader... the whole head messed-up and the figure not as cool and powerfull as it just should be.
And Luke, he all f*ck*dup with that mask. And what's with those lame lightsabers? :-X

I'm not sure if this line continues to 2008, but if it does, I would still NOT buy it, even if I got for free.... :P

I love this piece.

This is concept art... not meant to be visualized pieces.

This is where it all came from...

And me, I only do Sith and Clones/Troopers, so this is a must for me.

Don't be so sure about that.  One little tidbit to come out of ToyFair is that Master Replicas is taking over US distribution of Kotobukiya products.  That may set more of a standard price, and those prices may tend to skew higher as MR's product runs a little more expensive.  When Dark Horse/Diamond were handling distribution you were very likely to get competitive pricing.  Now, I'm not so sure.

I've a quick question for those of you who've purchased Kotobukiya sets before.  What is the quality of these pieces?  They look outstanding, but are they durable and heavy -- does the plastic feel sturdy -- or are they fairly light and feel thin and hollow?  I'm very interested in the McQuarrie concept piece, but for $170 to $200, I want some heft on this set to help justify the expense.  BBTS has a shipping weight of 8.4 lbs for the McQuarrie set, but I don't know how much of that weight is claimed by the boxes & packing material.  Thank you for any input.

The build quality has never been a question. They are not like the light Applause pieces of years gone by.

They are durable and hard. Well detailed. Nicely done indeed.  ;D

Well, I took the plunge and pre-ordered a set yesterday.  I don't know if I'll get any other Kotos, but this one's just too cool to pass up.  I ordered with Mike @ Razorsedge.   I've ordered quite a few maquettes from him and had no problems.  Mike's price is not as cheap as the price list from Andrewstoyz, but I can pay with my Paypal account, which keeps it off the credit card, which keeps the wife off my case ... Bonus!  :P
