After slowing down for a long time, I've jumped into Blu-ray and am sort of back to buying movies.

Anyone planning on picking up Blue Harvest this week?  Seems that Best Buy has the Best Deal at $12.99 for the bare bones edition, unless you want all that extra crap for $25.  I'm almost positive that this episode will be included in a Family Guy boxed set and those are generally $25 for an entire season when they first come out, so I'm going to wait it out.

I wish I had Blu-ray.

I'm glad I don't (at least not yet)  Still waiting for the war to end to see who will arise as the victor.  Also - I'm not ready to replace my entire library at $20+ bucks a pop.

Anyone planning on picking up Blue Harvest this week?

My local Costco already has them on their shelves, so someone made a booboo.  I looked at it, but I'm not a huge fan of Family Guy, at least not enough that I expected to enjoy it for $14.

Yeah, they're a buy-sell-trade type place.  I think it's owned by Blockbuster though.

My decision to hold off on picking up the Simpsons movie paid off. Last week it was on sale at Target for $10.

That's my stance on almost everything that is a new release.  Having paid $20 for the X-men movies was foolish, but I enjoyed them.  Finding them regularly for $7-10 brand new is too frustrating.  Plus I get the benefit of deciding whether I even really want the movie at all.  Used at blockbuster for $6.99 after a period of time is so much more appealing, especially now that most basic movies don't even have an insert with them anyway.

That's what I've been doing since 04 with almost all new movies that have come out that I'm interested in.  I wait a month or two and I usually get 4 for $30 or I wait a few more months and get them for $5 or half of that, plus they all come with lifetime guarantees.

Well, I was going to buy 'No Country For Old Men' because there was a sign at Target that said it came with a $5 gift card (making the purchase $10), but then at the register the lady told me the sign was a typo, that I'd have to buy two $15 + tax movies to get a $5 gift card.

I realized these brand new single-disc releases aren't worth $6.50, so I put it back and went home.

I REALLY wanted the FYE/Suncoast version with the ultra cool packaging but the closest mall with an FYE is 90 minutes away. So I settled for the Best Buy version with the bonus disk. It was cheap ($15.99) so you get more bang for your buck I guess. But man, these store exclusives are really pissing me off. Release one damn version and get it over with. >:(

Also, for completionist sake, I picked up Juno last Tuesday.

I stopped by Suncoast and I really didn't care for the Cloverfield tin at $22 with the standard disc, so I got the $16 version at BB with the bonus disc.

Good flick....On sale?  I've been wanting to finish off that "trilogy", but I refuse to pay more than $10 per DVD.

Even though most of these aren't "08 DVDs", I went a bit nuts since finding this thread again last week:

The Alamo
Bridge to Terabithia
The Crow: Wicked Prayer
The Golden Compass
Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Knocked Up
Meet the Spartans
Rambo (07)
Semi-Pro
Superman II: Richard Donner Cut

You paid money for that film?  The Crow is one of my favorite films but I'd be hard pressed to name another franchise that fell that far into the gutter.  I watched it, once, on cable but I won't even watch it again.

I plan on grabbing it tomorrow when we stop by Target, but haven't decided on which version.  Is there a big reason to grab the 2-disc over the regular release?  I usually grab 2 disc version of my favorite movies, when possible, but kind of take it on a case by case basis on these sort of sets.

Well it's worth it alone if you love Batman: The Animated Series like I do. The bonus disc has some sort of story about the creation and evolution of Batman, a feature on Gotham and its heroes/villains/citizens and 4 of Bruce Timm's favorite episodes of Batman:TAS. Haven't gotten to watch it yet but I plan on doing so soon.

I just saw that in the review over at IGN, it sounds like the special features are pretty spiffy overall (10 out of 10 from IGN I believe).

Starship Troopers 2 was god awful. There were boobs in it, though, so... but yeah, if you pick it up, don't expect a sequel to Starship Troopers - instead, just think of a movie, filmed in a hotel, using a few Starship Troopers props (guns, helmets) and nothing more. Don't expect bugs, don't expect landscape, don't expect anything at all... because you won't get anything but really, really dark and close quarters shots of people destroying their scripts.

On that note, I can't wait to pick up Starship Troopers 3 for about $5... I love terrible movies, so long as I go into it knowing it's going to super-suck.

Nice.  But didn't they do a huge set like this a few years ago, only it came with a bust or something?  I forget.  This one reminds me of that huge Alien set they did that came in the Alien head as the holder.

That's impressive, though, 24-inches long for the ship?  I'm a sucker for those collector type items but I don't think I'd look to get something like this.  I didn't like the two sequels well enough!

The nicest premium sets I've ever purchased have been the the Fellowship and Return of the King LOTR sets and the Di Vinci Code set with the Codex.  I'm still upset that I never bought the Minas Morgul companion piece to go along with that set.

On the other hand, the most disappointing premium set I bought was Order of the Phoenix with the Death Eater mask...cheap.

Also I noticed Wal-Mart put up a huge mid-aisle display box with all 6 Star Wars movies, with the "Limited Edition: You can only get them from September to December 2006!" versions of the OT. $13 each, I almost snagged the OT discs but remembered that the original versions weren't enhanced for 16x9.

Getting Ironman for $13.99 tomorrow at Circuit City.  Not biting on a PS3 until the price comes down some more.  Not even sure how I'd manage the transistion from buying DVDs to Bluray when that time comes for me - let alone having to rebuy a small chunk of my collection.   :-\

Definitely planning on picking up Iron Man tomorrow or Wednesday, depending on when I get to the store.  On a side note, how many of you opt for the 2 disk editions of these movies - or do you stick to the cheaper single disk ones.  For movies like this (Iron Man, Indy, etc.) I usually go for the deluxe editions, but while looking at the ads from the paper this weekend, my wife asked me why I wouldn't just get that single versions and if the extras were worth the extra $7-$10.  Does anyone opt for the single (or cheaper) releases?
Title: Re: 2008 DVD Releases Thread
Post by: efranks on September 29, 2008, 04:02 PM
Depends on the film and what those extras are.  Some of the recent releases have just had the digital copy but the rest of the content was almost identical to the cheaper, single disk release.  Those really aren't worth it to me.

Now, Iron Man, Batman, probably Indy, Star Wars: The Clone Wars...I'll being buying the deluxe releases of those as they're almost a collectible to me.  Smaller films, like Forgetting Sarah Marshall (which also comes out tomorrow), I'm not looking to spend a ton of money on extras for them as I just want the movie.  I probably won't buy deluxe editions, if offered, of Hancock, Wanted or the Hellboy film either.

Then there are the deluxe, deluxe releases like the Iron Man and Indy sets with the Sideshow pieces in them or the Lord of the Rings sets with the Weta pieces.  Those I rarely buy but will sometimes.  I bought all three of the LoTR sets and I'm thinking about the Indy set.  One of the coolest ones was the Da Vinci Code release with the working cryptex in it.  Worst one I bought was the last Harry Potter film with the Death Eater mask.  It looked good in the store so I bought it but it wasn't that nice once you got it open.

Unless the extra is just a crappy digital copy, I usually opt for the Special Editions. It's weird, because I usually don't even bother watching the second discs. I just like having it.
Title: Re: 2008 DVD Releases Thread
Post by: Rob on September 29, 2008, 05:35 PM
I'll go for the nice one if it has something worthwhile that isn't on the other one - to me that means deleted scenes or alternate cuts of the film.  With Blu-ray though, most of the time all the extras are included since there's so much space on the discs.

Yeah, I thought maybe the Targets and Wal-Marts would have their own exclusives as well (as they usually do with Star Wars, comic movies, etc.), but I hadn't heard anything so far.  We usually just grab our DVDs at Target, since they are usually the cheapest by far around here (at least that is reasonably close) - but I just thought I'd double check any exclusives before we trekked out next week.

What I typically do is get the 1-disc (for most movies I will never touch the extras) or hold out for a loss-leader sale where I can get the Special Edition for around the same price as the regular (that's how I picked up Lord of War, for example).

Only for favorite or "event" movies like LOTR, SW, Kingdom of Heaven, etc. do I bother with the loaded editions at full price. For KOTCS I'll hold out for a holiday sale until I can get the 1-disc for $10 or so.

A buddy of mine uses that thing all the time.  One time we were on our way home from somewhere and he had to stop off and drop a movie off that his girlfriend had rented.  He asked me to run in drop it off.

There were 3 people in line, and you can't just put it in... you have to push some buttons first, so I had to wait.

It took me over 20 minutes to return the movie.

Right there I swore never to use that thing.

I had KFP on my list as a weird Friday release - I'm not sure where I got it from, but it caught my eye the other day when I went to see what was coming out.  I saw the DVD at every store I went into yesterday, but there was no sign of the Blu-ray yet.  So, I think it was released already.

I noticed that Kung Fu Panda was out everywhere here on Saturday already as well.  It wasn't even an "ooops" either, as Target had a big front display set up by the checkout lanes and everything.  I also noticed the SW sets out early at our local Target stores.  Its too bad we already have the movies (or several versions) as the packaging is kind of nifty.  I noticed in this week's Target ad that they are having a 5 pack of the Harry Potter movies for around $35.  Pretty nice deal for someone who hasn't gotten them (although the picture in the ad was fullscreen, so I don't know if they have both versions or not).

The more hardcore DVD buyers (Rob and Matt) probably already know this, but deepdiscountdvd's sale is currently ongoing.  Previous years it was only 20%, this time it's 25% off (with free shipping).  I placed an order on Saturday for the Batman: The complete Animated series (just over $54), Mask of the Phantasm and a few Godzilla movies.  Unfortunately, the animated Batman ones are out of stock, but the sale price will still apply once they restock, whenever that may be.

The sales lasts until November 23rd, so I'm going to place another order for movies that come out in the next few weeks - Kung Fu Panda, Hellboy 2 and Wall-E - that I want to pick up.

DVDTALK and USATODAY work for codes and I'm sure they're a bunch of others also.

Sometimes **** comes out on days other than Tuesday.  Such is the case of Kung Fu Panda (or, as the kids say, "KFP").  For example, the Spider-Man DVD was originally released on a Friday back in 2002.  Shrek was another non-Tuesday release.  For future example, the worst album ever recorded will be released two Sundays from now, instead of two Tuesdays from now.

In the case of the Star Wars trilogies, it's just lazy stockboys who don't give a **** about keeping a "street date" for something that was originally released three and four years ago and has already been repackaged and resold several times since then.

Anybody buying Clone Wars today?  I really hated the "movie" but it's Star Wars so I must have it for my DVD collection.   :-\

This was the exact reason why I picked it up today. Plus I need it if when ( ::)) I get the seasons on DVD.

Went witht he best buy metal version.

I picked this one up as well and have a question for you: Did your Best Buy price the tin set at $51.99? I paid $22.99 but thought that was ridiculous for a 2 disc DVD.

I went ahead and ordered Kung Fu Panda and Hellboy II from Deep Discount with the sale.

Band of Brothers on Blu-ray is coming from Amazon, and I can't wait.

Also, if anyone buys the Kung Fu Panda DVD and watches the Secrets of the Furious Five, it was created by the GG side of the studio I work for, and everyone is very proud of how it came out.

EDIT:  Turns out our guys only did the full CG parts with the students - the majority of it was done elsewhere.  Either way, everyone is still proud of how it turned out.

Thanks for the tip Mikey. I picked up The Long Goodbye and Forgotten Silver for under $15. Not a bad deal at all.

I had Clone Wars in my hand at Target today but after thinking about it for a little while I decided to pass on it. I really didn't like the 'movie' at all, and I honestly haven't been that impressed with the show either. I was playing Gears of War II last Friday and lost track of the time and ending up missing the episode. I didn't really feel like I missed a whole lot and didn't really have any desire to go back and watch it online. I think that is as good of a place as any for me to stop watching. I decided if I'm not going to watch the show there wasn't anypoint in picking up the movie. $25 saved is always nice too.

I loved it - mostly for the bizarre environments and creatures.  After Pan's Labyrinth, Del Toro said something about wanting to make an entire movie that took place in the labyrinth, and this had that sort of feel.

If the sale lasts until next week... I might need to cancel my Wall-E / Southland Tales preorder from Amazon and get them from Deep discount.  There's also Tropic Thunder, Mirrormask, Lucky Number Slevin, and Paris, je t'aime coming out on blu-ray...

The sale ends on the 23rd, so ordering Wall-E with the discount shouldn't be a problem (although you might run into the out of stock scenario).  I'll end up placing three orders in total:

Order #1 - Batman: The Complete Animated Series, Mask of the Phantasm, Rodan / War of the Gargantuans, All Monsters Attack and Terror of Mechogodzilla

Order #2 - Kung Fu Panda / Furious Five and Hellboy II

Order #3 - Wall-E

Anything else worth getting with the Wall-E order next week?  Tropic Thunder worth a blind buy?  How about Forgetting Sarah Marshall?  I was always interested in seeing that one, but after seeing the pic of Kirsten Bell having acrobatic sex in the latest issue of Playboy, my interest has risen more.  :P

Is it just me or does it seem like this year, the last 2 or 3 months to be specific, we've seen a lot of DVDs break the release date?  The new Star Wars sets jumped the gun at Target, Kun Fu Panda had an odd release date anyway but I found it early.  The boxed set of "Charmed" came out early at my Target and now you've spotted the Dark Knight 5 days early.

I don't remember ever finding a DVD early till this year and now I've seen at least 3 and heard of more.  I'm starting to think the stores are doing it on purpose to generate foot traffic in the bad economy.

I'm still trying to figure out where to pick this DVD up tomorrow.  I usually like to go to Target, but I guess I'm just not a big fan of the mask packaging necessarily (takes up too much room), and I do want the deluxe edition (which is what it comes with there).  If it has the "normal" case inside, then that would be fine.  I ended up getting Iron Man and Transformers at Best Buy for the same reason.  Its cool and all, but I just don't have the room for all that extra stuff.  Wal-Mart's the closest drive, so maybe I'll check that out (is it the single disc that comes with the comic and coin though?).  This is one movie that I'd like to have the "deluxe version" of - although I've tried to be more judicious when picking up the extra loaded versions lately, making sure I'd actually get use out of the extra $7 (or more) it costs.

It doesn't look like the Walmart exclusive with the comic and coin is the 2-disk special edition.  That's listed separately on their website plus the cover artwork is different.  The regular release has Batman in front of the building with the bat symbol buring above him.

The special edition has Batman on the Batpod on the slipcase cover and Joker on the case cover.

Yeah based on the amount of 2 disc DVDs I've bought over the last 3 months, none of these exclusives will be included with the 2 disc.

HOWEVER, I read a review of the DVD that said the extras are all crap and they basically put out regular DVD's as an afterthought to Blu-Ray. I've also heard rumblings of a "ultimate award winning edition" DVD coming out later next year...

Holy sh!t--TV on DVD has exploded over the past couple of years, most definitely.  I think the release of the first Simpsons set back in 2001 really got the ball rolling there.  Once Mr. Belvedere: The Complete First Season comes out, I'm seriously re-evaluating the hobby.

After a lot of consideration, I just ended up going with the bare bones version of Dark Knight as well (the $15 one).  I usually spend the extra to get the "deluxe version" of movies like this (Star Wars, Indy, Spidey, etc.) - but looking over the extras, and being a little tighter with the budget lately, made me decide that the extras weren't worth the extra $8 (at Target).  When it came down to it, I just wanted the free digital download, but when I really thought about it - I don't really need that either.  I always try to pick up the versions that have that, thinking that "someday" we'll get a newer iPod that plays video - but I know that's a ways off, and even then, how often am I going to look at that tiny screen to watch a movie as long as the Dark Knight.  If I want to watch it on the computer or a portable player, I can just use the DVD.  Plus, eventually I'd like to upgrade to blu-ray (if/when we can afford it), so I thought the re-buy wouldn't sting quite as badly if I got the cheaper version now.

As a side note, the Dark Knight was selling like crazy at Target last night when I picked up our copy (and one for my Dad for Christmas).  It seems like most people were grabbing the single disc, which I suppose appeals more to casual buyers anyways.

I see that Death Car or whatever the hell it's called is being released tomorrow.  I'd really like to know why some DVDs can break Tuesday release dates.

In this case, a Sunday release gives them four days to sell before Christmas, whereas if they released it on Tuesday, they'd only have two days to sell before Christmas.

And, like Rob said.  Not everything "has" to come out on Tuesdays.
