Title: SAGA price hike?
Post by: CHEWIE on November 21, 2005, 03:50 PM
Anyone think they will jump up to around $6.00 instead of the $5.00 we are used to with ROTS (and most prior lines)?

Well, I've justed started collecting with the Revenge of the Sith toyline so I cannot give you an "educated" answer. However, considering that there will be no movies driving the line Hasbro will probably raise the price of their figures simply to earn a reasonable profit.

Like with everything else right now, I am sure that the prices will list at $6.99 since the ROTS are listed usually at $5.88 or $5.99 depending on the store. The $4.97 or so price that we see now is an adjustment.

Yeah, I'd guess that the $6 price is probably going to be the start price.

I think the reason that Wal-Mart and Target can charge less ($4.79) is due to volume.  In other words, if Wal-Mart and Target are still ordering (and then selling) tons of figures, the price will stay low.

If the sales droop because it's a non-movie, non-TV year then you'll probaly see the $5.50-$6.00 range again.   :-\

$6.99?  Let's hope not... but I do think we'll see Walmart back up to $5.88 with SAGA, and Target around that price.  TRU could hit $6.99 though, but God I hope not.

I just can't stomach 7 bucks a figure... I'd still collect, but I would not buy as much fodder and extras for customs.   Plus sales would dwindle a lot.  The hardcore collectors will stay in it, but moms aren't going to want to buy junior that Barada or Riekken for that much as often.  An extra $2.00 adds up quickly.

Hopefully though, with the TV series, we'll still see quantity on the shelves (and quality too) which should help keep prices in check.

Either way, it's still cheaper than the 7.99 I paid in NYC for the E1 figures the day they hit!  And, yes, I think they'll go up a buck.  This seems to have been the case in the past.

Insert standard Canadian whine where retail varies from $7.97-9.99 plus 14% taxes.

Carry on.

I think the price will go up as well. However, with less volume than the ROTS line, I'll still not be spending as much cash. 8)

Yeah, undoubtedly it will go up and the retailers will scratch their heads wondering why the SW product is not moving as fast and say "Ohhhh, see that SW stuff nobody buys any of that anymore.  Just leave that stuff on the pegs for a year and not order anymore."  LOL!

It will go up but if you think about it you're spending that extra buck on the "Hologram Figure."

Although I really like getting 4 figures for just above $20 though.

It would be really nice to see things stay at the $5-ish range for next year, but I sort of expect us to be back around $6 or so.  I can deal with that, but when it gets above that and up to $7-8, that starts getting a little too pricey.  I kind of think we'll see a new pricepoint after the holiday clearances and the 2006 reset in the toy aisles, and hopefully it will stay below $6.

non-movie year = higher prices.

I think Hasbro has proven this to be the case time and time.

non-movie year = higher prices.

I think Hasbro has proven this to be the case time and time./quote]

Not necessarilly...  E1's movie year saw the biggest price jump.  That carried over into Power of the Jedi, but only briefly as then the figures came back down to $5.99 and even $4.99-ish.

Saga saw more of a shift to the $4.99 if I recall, but didn't they first arrive at $5.99 till "price adjustment" started between the competing retailers?  I forget now it's been a little while.

There was some price fluctuations but ROTS started at $5.99 which was fine enough...  Jumping to $6.99 is going to sting if that is the case, and definitely will have a negative affect on how much I buy, and what I buy...  I'll pass on things like Hoth R2-D2 whereas I MIGHT have bought one otherwise.

I think what we'll see is perhaps an increase, but then a leveling out to the $5.99 (or even lower depending how competitive the line still remains at retail) by retailers.

Well, it looks like the first shots have been fired...

Reports are coming in from all over the USA today (my JD-mail inbox is flooded).   :D

Wal-Mart - ranges from $5.83 to $5.96

TRU - $6.99

Target - $6.99 (via DPCI number - no actual store reports yet)

So, it looks like the Carkoon wave is coming in at the $6-7 range at the the big three.

Let's hope we see some price competing between Wally and Target to bring the price back to the $5.00 - $5.50 range again!

Found them today at Walmart - $5.88 each.  Got one each of Han and Leia, and two Bibs.

ROTS was supposed to be in the same price range but good ol' competition changed that.

I don't think we'll see "bottom line" pricing this time around because of the lack of volume / movie support.

I can handle $6 (they're nice figures), but anything over $6 and it's iffy....well, I'd pay $7 for the Republic Commando!

I'd still collect at $7.00, but would cut back a lot.

I know I've said this a dozen times but...even at 6.99, they're cheaper than what I was paying in NYC in 1999 when TPM came out!
Title: Re: SAGA price hike?

Seems like the price increase may be on...

At $6 I'm alright...  $7's a bit much though and I'll be cutting back a bit if that's the case.  $6 I'll still get some for customs and army buidling but unfortunately less than I likely would have otherwise.

I still wholely expect some kind of price reduction as the whole competition thing kicks in.  Target's not even reportedly getting anything yet...  When they do I expect WM to try undercutting them.

KM and KB will always be high though, and TRU was higher than WM or Target this past year so I'm not expecting them to come down much.

EDIT:

BTW it's so great to say this here without some dickless wonder telling me how "If a $1 or $2 increase is really that big a deal to you, you probably should quit collecting and being so cheap, or go get a real job"...  Last I looked, that was a popular thing to spout off about elsewhere for some folks...  Glad to see we can talk price increases here and not have to demean each other about how we view value and our spending habits.  Good knowing we've got a solid respectful group guys, seriously.

I agree with you on this Jesse. Truly with me and where I am at in this stage of life, money is truly not the problem/issue. However, one of the reasons for that is the wife (who is an accountant) and I run our budget and I budget for my collecting. When the budget is gone, I don't buy until the next month (same with other things we purchase).  It is what I am willing to pay for a product vs the quality I am receiving. FOR ME, anything above $6.25 and I have to look at the figure, the quality of the figure, the articulation, and if it fits into one of my main collecting themes. Lower then $6 and I buy extras for army building and for customs, and extras of figures I really like since the same collecting budget buys more when the figures are reasonably priced.

My problem is storage.   I'm ALMOST glad the price went up.  I can't deal with a million clone troopers even though I'd like too... ;D  If the #41 trooper was plentiful and $2 a pop I'd have WAY too many...  this way it sort of keeps me honest.

More to the point: I'm becoming more selective and the Carkoon wave drives the point home for me.  I think the wave sucks for the most part and it sobers me a bit.

I feel the same way too.  I'm leaving the US for 6 weeks on a research trip and where I am going there are no stores whatsoever (Antarctica ;D).  So I am glad that the first wave seems to be the worst.  That way I will not feel bad about not being able to get it. :P

I should come back in Mid February to find some good new figures, for the most part.

$6.99 at Target? I wonder how long that will last?

$6.99 at Target? I wonder how long that will last?

Probably only until Corporate gets the memo that Wal-Mart is charging $5.88 for the figures.

Back during the OTC release, Target started at $5.99, but dropped to $5.44 after about a month to compete with Wal-Mart (which was charging $5.24 at the time).

I give Target a month at $6.99 (max), then I foresee a price drop in January.   ;)

I paid that $6.99 at Target last night, and boy, did it hurt. You can order a case online for less than that. Hopefully it hits 5.99 or less once the aisle resets are complete.

I hope so. I can hit two Targets easily on the way home from dropping my daughter off at school. It takes up almost no time and no extra gas. If I want to hit WM, it takes a little effort.

Picked up a couple figs from Target. Although I don't like it, I wasn't surprised to see the $6.99 price tag. This seems to be the norm for them. They start off high then come back down when they see Walmart is selling them for less. Just keep your receipts, like Jeff said, I give it a month. However, if they don't lower their price Walmart will be seeing most of my money. That extra $1.11 per fig adds up quick!

Until Target lowers their prices (and maybe sells Christmas trees instead of Holiday trees), I'm boycotting them - and TRU.  $6.99 is pathetic.  I'll get my figures from Walmart like usual, and order online.

I'd been holding out for Walmart to get these in - but every time I go they have absoutely NOTHING.  I found one Bib at a Walmart but the Hologram was ripped out of it.

So today I bit the bullet and just bought them all at Target.

Along with 4 more Utapau Shadow Troopers at $6.48 each. :)

Great Shadow Troop price man, wow.

I wish I could get a couple more.  I haven't even managed a team of those yet but I missed out on any clearance around here.  They sold actually for the most part, and even the Lava figure of Anakin sold out before clearancing.  I do think these clearances on shadow troops is a good sign that maybe Target's gonna either rethink the pricing or just give up on some of these ideas.

Although they don't have any figures actually on those pegs, but I did see the $6.99 pricepoint at Target as well, and I hope that doesn't stick around.  A $5.99 price would be better (heck, the ROTS $4.99 price would be best), and maybe we'll see them settle in there to compete with Wal-Mart.  I can handle paying the extra buck a figure this year if the overall amount of product goes down a little.
