Watto's Junk Yard / Re: A Game of Thrones (HBO)
« on: June 4, 2013, 10:13 AM »
Sorry, but this twitter feed has me laughing out loud.  It is a collection of fan twitter reactions to the Red Wedding.

NOTE:  Language is NOT appropriate for work/kids.

https://twitter.com/RedWeddingTears

Just added that to my GoT Twitter list!  I wonder just how many "HOW DARE YOU" tweets they've got?  Because you know that SO MANY young girls had a thing for Robb Stark!

I actually haven't had a chance to watch the episode yet.  But having read the book series, I knew that the Red Wedding was looming large.  I'm hoping to watch it tonight (thank you, DVR!), but I'm still prepared to be shocked going into it.

It still leaves me wondering how they're going to wrap up the season.

The Sequel Trilogy / Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Something just occurred to me regarding the pics of Mark Hamill pawing through that ash tray.  And it's because of something that just happened to me a couple of weeks ago.  I was going into Starbucks for a cup of coffee first thing in the morning, and I was still a little hazy.  On my way in I was bringing the previous day's coffee cup to throw out, my keys in one hand the dead coffee cup in the other.  Lo and behold, I was so out of it I accidentally threw my keys in the garbage can and NOT the coffee cup!  That led to me digging through the garbage to retrieve my car keys, which looked bizarre to the next guy who was walking in.  Fortunately, it was super early in the morning and the garbage was empty and I got the keys back.

THAT incident makes those pictures of Mark Hamill seem far less outlandish.

I think the whole "Yoda as guru" concept was a product of the filmmaking technology of the times.  From all of the behind the scenes docs at the time, it seemed very clear that there was a lot of uncertainty about whether or not the Yoda puppet would play well dramatically opposite an actor, and if the audience would suspend their disbelief and buy into the character.  Barring that, the technical challenges of filming those TESB Dagobah scenes were considerable, and just creating the appearance of the character WALKING was huge.

Fast forward to 2000, and all of a sudden it's possible to make a digital Yoda do almost anything that an actor can do, and in some cases more.  So, what to do?  Perhaps Lucas took the "Judge me by my size, do you?" line to heart in reconsidering the possibilities with Yoda?  But I think his desire to see Yoda fight was tempered by the realization that if it wasn't done right that it could look completely ridiculous.  He said so himself in the AOTC behind the scenes video.

Oh my.

No sweat.  I'm Just Tired of All the fear mongering and chicken little nonsense from one particular "reporter" at one particular site.  Hystrionics don't serve the collecting community well at all.

Who's ready to pay $14.99 for these this Fall?  :D

Me neither.

You might want to reconsider your news sources.

The Prequel Trilogy / Re: Rumor: No more 3D Prequel Releases?
« on: May 30, 2013, 12:27 PM »
I thought the 3D in TPM was pretty well done.  It is hit or miss though.  I saw Iron Man and Star Trek in 3D.  IM was not worth it, ST was pretty good.

ETA: 3D is hugely profitable for theaters and studios.  It isn't going anywhere.

Not for Theaters so much... they make very little on the movies themselves. Theaters make money from concessions.

Really?  Have you seen how much more a theater can charge for exhibiting a 3-D movie as compared to a 2-D movie?

AMC theaters shows their ticket pricing on their website.  And in my market, adult tickets for a 3-D version of a movie now go for $17.  That's opposed to the $13 adult admission  for a 2-D showing.  So where is the upcharge in costs for theaters that would erase this 30% (or so) increase in ticket prices?

The Black Series 6" Figures / Re: 6 Inch Figures?
« on: May 30, 2013, 10:04 AM »
Previews has historically been an OKAY source of information, and not much else.  You might be able to get an initial image of a new product there, but very little else.  I've used it for information in the past.  But when I was depending on my local comic shop for a good deal of collecting goods (notably Gentle Giant), I also looked into the pricing situation on Hasbro goods.  And when it comes to Hasbro, Diamond is NOT competitive.  Why?

Because Diamond Previews pricing on Hasbro offerings has always been on the high side.  It has forced the retailers (comic & collectibles shops) to price figures at least 25% higher than you would see in more traditional brick & mortar retail outlets.  Simply because they can't compete with the WalMart's, Target's and TRU's of the world from a volume standpoint.  Given that backstory with Diamond Previews, I think it's very safe to assume that the Black Series 6" figures will be priced much closer to $20 each at the traditional retail channels that most of us rely upon.  Thinking otherwise is bordering on alarmist.

But then, there's plenty of alarmist nonsense going around with some sites talking out of their asses about the Black Series 6" figures only being available in North America.  Hooboy!   ::)

1:6 Scale Figures and Collectibles / Re: New 1/6 Vader?
« on: May 25, 2013, 06:52 AM »
Is it me, or didn't Sideshow just do a TESB Vader last year?  And now they're doing this ROTJ edition?  And all the while, the Lords of the Sith sub-line STILL does not have a Darth Tyranus figure.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: X-Men/Wolverine Movies

So Bryan Singer tweeted that Quicksilver is going to be in the next X-Men movie. I know that this had come up earlier, but hadn't we also heard that Joss Whedon was going to be putting Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch in the next installment of Avengers?  WTF?!?!

Physically, Hugh Jackman didn't really match up with the image of Wolverine for the first X-Men.  In fact, he wasn't the first choice for the role.  That had actually been Dougray Scott.  But somewhere along the way the role of Wolverine got recast, and as a result Jackman has essentially been carrying the franchise.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: A Game of Thrones (HBO)

I've only read the 1st book. I believe in avoiding even a hint at spoilers. I would prefer it if we kept this thread "book-free" as far as spoilers go and try and keep the focus in the HBO series and have the other thread include both book and tv series.  I don't even read the episode description before I watch a show - that's how spoiler-free I like it! :-)

A very fair consideration.  It's tough to do that from my own standpoint, since I feel like I am continually comparing the content of the television series with the books.  But keeping those comparisons restricted to the book thread seems like the best way to keep this thread spoiler free.

The Sequel Trilogy / Re: Star Wars Sequel Trilogy Speculation
« on: May 15, 2013, 01:03 PM »
I would call a movie based on political disputes over a trade route a poor story.

Seconded, what an abysmal mess that was.

Yet we all loved it and bought every toy related to it.

It wouldn't say everyone loved it.  I would attribute a large portion of its success on the fact that it was the first Star Wars movie made in 16 years at the time it was released.

Then where was that criticism at the time?  For some time, the only thing SW community was outwardly critical of in The Phantom Menace was Jar Jar Binks.  And then when Episode II finally came out, THEN the floodgates opened and people were hating on TPM more outwardly.

Personally, I've found the delayed criticism of the prequels to be more objectionable than the movies themselves.  And I've always looked at that criticism through the filter of an audience that saw the OT as kids, and they wanted to relive that level of excitement as 20/30/40 somethings.  That was never going to happen, and no filmmaker could live up to expectations that high.

The Black Series 3.75" / Re: Defender Wishlists 2013 Discussion
« on: May 14, 2013, 07:49 PM »
I get the sense that the wind may have been taken out of the sails of this year's wishlists.  Any chance that we'll be moving on from the AOTC list?
