Well executed arc captain Outrider, the soft goods really add alot to this one especially because of the high quality of them.  By the way are you going to make a squad cause that would be cool to see a squad with these kamas.

Customizing Tips and Tricks / the miracle of epoxy resin
« on: July 12, 2006, 04:21 AM »
No high quality casting stuff yet but I did discover some neat properties of the Castin Craft 1:1 ratio epoxy resin.

THE OBVIOUS.

Its clear so the castin craft transparent pigments can be used to make hologram figures.
Its dries rock solid
Its good for practice cause its cheap

THE COOL THINGS I FIGURED OUT

I decided to experiment with it.  I did not have the Castin Craft pigments, namely white.  So I decided to try Testors acrylic white to pigment it.  It worked pretty well and gave a nice solid color.  There was one very interesting side effect.  The consistentcy changed from rock hard to soft and bendable, like pvc rubber.  Now the interesting thing is that the level of flexibility is affected by two things, one is how much acrylic paint you add and the other is if you add extra hardener to compensate for the paint.

The parjai helmet I casted came out just slightly more flexible than the normal pvc used for limbs,  so if I adjust the level of the paint and hardener I get a cheap way to cast limbs and cast torsos with plain resin.  I might even be able to use the stuff to make a two part mold, seeing as I don't have RTV or silicon.

Anyways LMK your thoughts on this,

Cool.  But sadly as I said it will take a long time to do this, and I am just practicing the basics right now.
Expect a ball joint update in about 6-8months okay.  Sorry for the long wait.  The following motto should be used for this project.  Minimize expectations to avoid disappointment.  Very true for this project.  Commander Kobra: Anyways, if its possible and if I perfect the technique I'll send you a PM with Pics and instructions.

I am using the Epoxy, not the polyester resin.  The epoxy resin mixes in the 1:1 ratio and is a clear resin.
Easier to use than the polyester but takes longer, upto 72 hours for full cure :o.  Still makes for good practice though.

Good use of Parts Smarty, but I have three peeves.  One is the lack of stomach/waist armor,  the second is the ill fitting helmet, and the third is th Han head hiding inside the helmet.  IMO, fix those and you have a custom that goes from good to excellent,  but then again its only my opinion.  Its all up to you.  BTW great Verp head sculpt and your ARCs look very good.

As I said above, I'll buy one for my collection.  Plus I am also doing it for the sake of the art itself, and to test my limit

Commander Kobra: I thought of a way to cast the ball joints in the hasbro style.  I'll give no details until I am absolutely sure it works.  Which won't be for a while.  If it does work I'll spill the beans on how I did it and provide pics.  But until then please be paitent.  I have a limited budget so things will take a long time for me to complete, ie gathering supplies.

Reprecht: I also want to go this route to improve my sculpting skills and besides there is more to cast than scorch- heads, weapons....... you get the idea. ;)

Customizing Tips and Tricks / I can start Casting today!!!

Just got some casting supplies to practice with from the local hobby shop. ;D
I am gonna practice with a cheap Epoxy Resin and Laytex from Castin' Craft  before I move onto the stuff from smoothon.com, which I will be getting later on.

For those who are interested, I will be making casts of my Parjai (Fox) helmet - My  own sculpt which will be seen within the next two weeks on the boards, the speederbike clone head and the TSC Carb Han neck post (read:no evo or gunner heads :-[).  The casts will probaly be clear first, then I 'll try it with pigments.

Thanks to Glassman for the great tutorial on casting hollow helmets, and to Delaton at ffurg, Bantha5, Smartypants, and Master Phurby for showing how valuable the skill of Casting is to customizing.

PS: I know you guys are probably sick of clones, but I came to the boards way after in the clonerush of 05' so please give me a brake, plus I do more than clones okay. :)

I am still going to do the sculpt for two reasons.

1. Can't afford that many Scorchs,  Cheaper to make my own and cast multiples some day.
2. I can make a SA sculpt with better detail,  Don't believe me about the detail?  Check the Forums a couple weeks from now too see the original sculpt and practice casts of my Parjai (Fox) Clone helmet.  Will take that long cause I have to borrow a friends camera again, and I'll take good pics this time.

Anyways thanks for the tip Smarty,  I'll probly try to get one MOMC for my collection.

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Sculpting tips?

Anybody have any tips on hbow to sculpt a figure from scratch?

I want some Republic Commandos.  So since I can't find any Scorchs here, I decided to make one.  Any one have tips on how to start from premo or sculpy?

Your photonovels continue to amaze me to no end.  The amount of effort you put into them is staggering, but I feel that you should continue too make characters for the PNs because your use of Parts,Paint, and the dremel without any sculpting is amazing.  You do very well with the "crappy" apple barell paints, they look like higher quality model paints in your hands.  Can't wait for the next Ultimate Edition.

Cool Cody and Fem-Mando.  the Punisher is great to.  I like the Pilot Mando, Punisher Mando and the Fem Mando more then your other Mandos because they are not just repaints (but the repaints are clean and well done) so to me it looks like more effort was put into them as their paint apps are great to.

When is your next updat for the Mando Dropship?  I am dying to see how it'll turn out.

To hide the waist gap try a piece of twine,  it'll look rough and down trodden and like a poorman's belt, plus it will hide the gap. between the torso and the hips.  Otherwise it is and engenious custom the fits the look of a slave very well.

Great work on the bridge and the Baccara BTW.

Undoubtably one of  the best Roron Corobb Customs I have ever seen.  Good parts choice, great paint apps, and nothing looks outta place, no mismatched joints.  Just beautiful to look at.  The coleman trebor neck blends very well with the Ithorian head.  Excellent work overall.

Try using tan for the drie brush instead of gray.  It will give the sandy/dusty look and only do it lightly in places where sand will get caught.  It will lend to the realism of the customs.  The off duty guy should be fine if you tone down the weathering, as nothing on Tatooine stays clean for long.

To make them look more Star Warsy,  Put an Imp decal on the Shirt of the off duty (like the Army Guys that wear thoes Ts that say ARMY) and one some where on the other trooper.  And try adding a little bit of armor on the upper torso to the on duty guy as he is part of the Imp army in a stormie division (sandtroopers are stormies on arid planets).

You don't have to do what I say of course, its entirely up to you as you are the customiser,  as far as the quality, they are well executed and match the rest of your customs.
