Revenge of the Sith / Re: Battle Packs (5 figure sets)
« on: March 25, 2005, 02:05 PM »
The one figure that stood out really badly to me (in terms of a "WTF?" moment) was the Mace Windu.  Great idea, Hasbro: take the single most overproduced and underselling figure of the Saga era, which also has a garish action feature that makes it nearly impossible for it to look good holding a lightsaber, slap a new head on it (presumably; as has been said, the lighting isn't that good), and put it in a five pack as a "new figure."   ::)

I do like the fact that they are doing a Yavin IV Anakin (I can only hope that the Ventress is "damaged" as well), and I'm cautiously optimistic about the Clone Armor Obi-Wan (my fear is that it will just have the snap on pieces from the Saga/CW Deluxe Clone with Speeder Bike as its "armor").

More than ever I'm convinced that Hasbro is reusing their old stock that they bought back from retail for these four packs.  I mean, out of all the figures they could pick, they pick Geonosian Rescue Mace, Final Battle Jango, and Deluxe Anakin?

Revenge of the Sith / Re: Wal-Mart Exclusive
« on: March 25, 2005, 01:58 PM »
You know, in this day and age, the "Early Bird" concept is completely and totally asinine.  The whole reason it was done in 1977 was because Kenner didn't have anything ready because they underestimated demand.  Also, back in the day, there wasn't anything else on the shelves at all, so the concept wasn't such a bad one (if a bit audacious).

Now, they're going to have thousands of toys in a single aisle at Wal-Mart that mom and dad can actually buy for their kids *right now* and they decide to sell an envelope with a coupon for 30 bucks to this same parent for their kid?  As much as I love SW, with my current financial situation (which will only worsen by this time in two weeks), I can't justify paying 30 bucks for a piece of paper that says I'll get something in six weeks.  I can only imagine that parents will feel even more adamant about this.

The Early Bird offer in 1977 is now infamous (and hell, Gary Kurtz even points out how audacious it was on the "Empire of Dreams" documentary) because it offered something that was in great demand but in short supply.  An Early Bird offer in 2005 is even more audacious  because it is offering something that has dwindling demand and an absolute metric ton of supply.

As for the Clone Wars thing, the Clone two-packs were done at the last moment because WM was threatening Hasbro with not carrying the line (at that point it was thought to be an entirely separate line and case assortment from the regular assortments).  Hasbro kind of extended the olive branch by giving them that exclusive two-pack thing, but WM still did not carry the vehicles or deluxe figures for the CW line: only the basic figures and the lightsabers.  How someone at WM, the panderer of all things immediate and cheap, thought that a 30 dollar envelope would be a good idea for an exclusive is beyond me.

Is it just me or does this whole ROTS marketing push resemble something Krusty the Klown would put together as the days go on?   I just have this vision of an assembly line at LFL with Vader dolls with knives sticking out of his neck, electrical arcs coming out of Palpatine dolls, and "Lucas Brand Dog Food...Now with More Entrails!" ::)

"Kellogs Corn Pops with Severed Hand Replica inside!  Collect all 12!"

That being said, I still have horrible memories of eating two big boxes of Froot Loops to get that damned Stormtrooper Han figure back in 1995.  Not to mention the bottomless grease pit of Lay's Potato Chips to get Cool Mint Obi-Wan in 1997.  Needless to say, I have not eaten Froot Loops or Lay's Potato Chips since these promotions.  The only thing worse was buying the GI Joe cereal when I was a kid so I could send away for the "Starduster" kitbashed figure.

Revenge of the Sith / Re: A possible unforseen problem.
« on: March 24, 2005, 10:19 PM »
I would think that there is some kind of system indicator that will allow the items to be sold at retail after midnight.  I've been to "Midnight Madness" at WM for both TPM and AOTC, and it's actually run like clockwork at each.  I was in a 24-hour SWM one night around 12:05 AM for something completely unrelated, and one of the clerks said that they would have to wait until 12:10 for the computer to reset.  Apparently (at least at this WM) the WM central computer resets around midnight for the "fiscal day" and I think that this same kind of approach will probably apply to the ROTS toys.

I had typed a rather long rant on how WM is exhibiting a tendency to view the SW toy section with spite, but it wasn't relevant to this thread, so I deleted it.  I guess what I'm trying to say is that WM's HAL-9000 unit that controls the chain will have everything working wonderfully at midnight and there will be no problems whatsoever.  Just be sure when you discuss this with your friends, you realize that the WM security cameras in the parking lot can read lips.  ;D

Revenge of the Sith / Re: April 3rd... the day after.

This is what I will be doing on April 3rd:

Repeatedly saying to myself, "I spent THAT much money on toys?  No wonder I'm single."

Revenge of the Sith / Re: 2005 Red Metallic Darth Vader @ Target
« on: March 24, 2005, 04:49 PM »
Once I saw that the Vader would be such hell to get, both from a financial and sociological standpoint, I pretty much gave up on it.  The Holo Yoda would be very nice to have, but as I don't live within an hour of a TRU, I'm pretty much out of luck there (unless some fine person who lives near a TRU smiles down on me, that is).   :-*  So, at least on those two counts, the exclusives thing isn't going to come back and bite me in the ass.

This WM thing has me puzzled though...if it's actually something exclusive (as in a figure being different than a regular release) or something, I might buy it.  If it's just repackaged figures with a retro-display box (as it sounds), I think that I will be able to easily pass on this.  Given the "quality" of WM's recent three packs for the OT and CW DVDs, I have a feeling this "Early Bird" thing is going to be one big disappointment.

That being said, if they want to slap the first 12 Collection 1 figures in a box for 30 bucks (as opposed to paying 6 bucks for them individually), I'm all for that.   ;D

Just wanted to give another big thumbs up to SiteC!  I just completed a wonderful transaction with him that could not have gone any smoother.  He hooked me up with some Unleashed figures for cheap, and I can't say enough good things about the purchase.

Thanks again SiteC!  Highly recommended! :)

Security guards.  For an action figure.

Excuse me for just a moment...

WHAT THE ****?

First it was waiting in line to get a figure, and now apparently you have to run a picket line to get one of these figures.  Are they going to have policemen in riot gear standing by with water hoses and rubber bullets in case they run out of figures?   ::)

It'll be here tomorrow, but, sheesh. USPS and FedEx will just leave it at my doorstep, but UPS has to be all difficult about it.

It looks like it's time for me to really disturb people regarding the practices of the USPS, FedEx, and UPS.  After I tell you guys this, you'll probably never look at the three biggest shippers in the US of A the same way again, but this is all information that I have gathered from employees of said companies over the past few years and it also explains why I am so paranoid about each of them in their own ways.

First off, UPS has a system as to whether or not they will leave a package or a notice when you receive something from them.  According to a former employee, UPS has an unspecified hierarchy of residential areas that decides whether or not they will leave a package, leave a notice, or some other option.  Here's how it works:

Level One: at this level, the UPS delivery person will leave the package hidden somewhere on your property and leave an InfoNotice on your door to point you to where this is.  This is usually only done in "secure" areas, such as gated communities, rural areas with low traffic flow, or otherwise "safe" places.  My parents live in the second category and UPS routinely leaves packages in their barn with a notice on the front door.

Level Two:  at this level, the UPS person will only leave the package if you give them written permission to do so, or they will leave it with a neighbor (who, Jebus willing, won't bitch and moan about it after they agreed to do it in the first place, but I digress).  If you give them neither, they will leave you an InfoNotice and attempt redelivery.

Level Three:  at this level, UPS will only leave an InfoNotice on your door and would probably prefer it if you come to their distribution center to pick it up so they don't have to come back out to the DMZ.

So basically, the nicer the area/neighborhood you live in, the quicker you'll get your UPS packages.  When I found this little tiered structure out last year, I got really depressed at being in Level Two.

Also, UPS is less reliable the larger your package is.  One ex-employee said that anything bigger than a television that said "FRAGILE" on it was basically tagged as being target practice.  He said that the employees would treat these packages in a much more haphazard fashion due to the working conditions they operated under.  Kind of a Fight Club-esque revenge on people that have nothing to do with their work conditions, I suppose.

FedEx is the company that literally doesn't give a **** about you or your package.  If you want it fast, they'll get it to you, but they are a slave to their computer systems.   One story had a guy ordering a computer with five-day delivery only to have it arrive at the distribution center three days early.  This distro center was a mile away from his home (he lived near an airport) and when he saw this on his tracking summary, he went to the distro center to see if they would give it to him.  The people there said that he paid for 5 day and that it would not be given to him any sooner, despite the fact that it was right there.  FedEx will often just throw the packages out of the truck (depending on how close to the residence you are) and several times (personal experience) they have not even knocked on my door to let me know that my package has arrived.  They run up to the door quickly, throw it down and speed away.  On one occasion, I literally tripped over the package as I walked out my door.

Their customer service is generally atrocious too.  I can't recall all the details, but there was something said about them randomly taking days off and purposely not answering the phones at other times.  And they're generally seen as having the absolute worst record at being able to find your package if it is lost.  Also, keep in mind that FedEx Ground is operated on a local level (similar to a franchise), so often times, they don't communicate so well with the actual company.

As for the USPS, their attitude is basically "We're the only game in town, so deal with it!"  They will more or less come right out and tell you that 90 percent of their services are useless, and that unless you want to be 100 percent sure you will get something when you're supposed to get it, you have to spring for their highest level of service (which is, predictably, more expensive than either FedEx or UPS).  They also like to randomly acknowledge/deny their relation to the US Government.  This changes from day to day, based on the given situation.  If it benefits them (as in "federal holiday"), they will say they are in the govt.  If it does not benefit them, they deny it.

So, in short, this is what they are good for:

UPS: packages up to the size of a television
FedEx: documents/letters that are time sensitive
USPS: cheap ways to send letters but otherwise nothing

Back to your regularly scheduled program. :)

Revenge of the Sith / Re: AT-RT - the walker army-builder
« on: March 22, 2005, 07:41 PM »
The thing that has always bugged me about the whole Clone armor thing in the prequels as opposed to the OT armor is not so much the camo or the different "battle gear" (such as the ARCs or the jet packs), but more the sudden appearance of rank delineation with the color stripes and whatnot.

In the OT, we had Stormtroopers.  As Randal Graves once said, "Killing in white uniforms" and they knew nothing about installing toilet mains.  There were different subsets of soldiers for special weather conditions (Sandtroopers, TIE Pilots, AT-AT Drivers, Snowtroopers, and Biker Scouts), but all of their armor was identical (well, the Sandies' pauldrons were ranked, so there's strike one on my theory).  My point is, that within the normal ST ranks, there was no delineation of rank shown by their uniforms.  It was all generic and the whole "faceless" nature of the Imperial infantry was much more pronounced.

Now, the prequels roll around (or we find out the ST origins; however you like to put it) and we've got Yellow, Red, Green, and Blue stripes to delineate rank in AOTC, then we've got full blown color schemes (those blue guys that are following Anakin in the trailer) and again, multiple rank designations.  It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me; even if you're a mindless automaton, doesn't the chain of command theory still hold true?  I envision these grand Stormtrooper arguments aboard a Star Destroyer like the ant farm on the "Deep Space Homer" episode of "The Simpsons:"

"PROTECT THE COMMANDER!"
"Which one's the commander?"
"I'M THE COMMANDER!"
"No you're not!"
"Yes, I am!"

Of course, my own personal theory is that in addition to this posthypnotic thingy that Palpatine pulls on the Clones to have them turn eeeeeevil, it also somehow eradicates any individuality they may have developed during the Clone Wars, and a rather unfortunate side effect is that they are now all completely cross-eyed and cannot shoot straight.  Kind of like a giant "DURRRRRR!" button that Palpatine can push or something and keep them in line.

Just completed a wonderful transaction with Kevin.  Not only did he put up with my incessant questions about relative minutae, he sold me a fairly hard to find item at an amazing price.  So thank you for the Maul, Famine!  Highly recommended! :)

Other Collectibles / Re: Unleashed Again
« on: March 21, 2005, 09:07 AM »
Do we have the "drooling" smiley yet?  ;D

I've officially thrown the "only one of each character" credo I had been going by out the window now that I have seen these.  That Vader looks great, and even Ventress looks good.  Yoda and Palpatine, though, is the piece de resistance.  I'm just hoping that it will have an actual base with it.

So, I guess that leaves the rumored Stormie Han/Chewie/Clone wave for the end of the year.  After having gotten the Stormie from the current wave online, it looks as if the helmet on the figure is a separate piece glued onto the figure's neck, so I am halfway expecting that the Han will just be a "reheaded" version of the current Stormie.  If they're going to go that route, just do a Luke at the same time and pack them 1 per case in the same case.  Or do a running change like with the Red Clone.

And mosnab, I'm right there with you on the shelving space issue.  The top shelf of my computer desk is packed to capacity, and I really need to make a trip to Home Depot or something in the next few days before the ROTS stuff hits.

Yeah, that is the problem with these retailers.  They have all probably bought 2000 cases of the first products and that is what will sit until they sell.  Then they will blame the consumer because Star Wars "does not sell."  You know the drill.

And lest we forget that Hasbro, for the umpteenth time in the last ten years of doing modern SW toys, has once again loaded down the initial assortments with the less interesting figures and put the ones that people would be more likely to buy multiples of in the later assortments.

They did it with the Darktrooper/Spacetrooper wave of EU figures, they did it with the CommTech Stormtrooper, and they did it (in a huge way) with the Clone Wars SA Clone Trooper.  Now they're doing it again by putting the three arguably coolest deluxe figures in the last group of figures.

At this point, Hasbro should just start putting "Ebay Exclusive" on the packages even if they do ship them to regular retail.   ::)

The Prequel Trilogy / Re: PT Showings May 18th-19th?
« on: March 19, 2005, 10:08 PM »
I haven't heard anything definite about this type of thing yet, but it would be a great opportunity, even if it isn't a "lead-in" thing and is done at some point after a few weeks have gone by and "Generic Lindsay Lohan Film Number 274" has taken over the number one spot due to the rapidly declining ability of a section of the populace to discern when Hollywood has run out of ideas.

(I mean, really, did we need a "hip" and updated version of "Herbie" just so we can see Lindsay Lohan jiggle around on screen for 90 minutes?  It seems she's doing that well enough on her own these days...)

Anyway, I would love to see them do a prequel marathon and I'll go one step further and say how cool it would be to do an all-day Saga marathon on the big screen.  Start at around noon or so, and the final destruction of the second Death Star would occur right at midnight.  Of course, this would have to be timed out perfectly, but I would imagine it could be done.

I can see it now though...Comic Shop Guy harassing the people at the theater because he only wants to see the last three films, thus "qualifying" him for a half-price ticket.   ::)

Maybe I'll just watch Episodes I and II at home, drive to see III in the theater, and come home and watch IV, V, and VI on DVD.  At least at home my feet don't stick to the floor (most of the time, anyway) and I don't have to deal with rude people who need to have their cell phones forcibly inserted into their anuses.

It will probably be the three Unleashed figures (Grievous first) that fall victim to my shaky "Oh my goodness, new SW toys!" hands immediately after I get home around 1 AM on the 2nd.  Then, the pillow will be my next victim as I am getting a little too old to handle being up so late.  Plus my arthritis will probably be killing me.  ;D

The next morning, I'll probably open what I've picked up in numerical order when I get back from driving around to the other retailers in the area.  If it's anything like the Saga 2002 onslaught, I'll be able to say out loud how the figures get progressively better the higher their numbers get, at least as far as Collection 1 goes.
