Title: TVC Nevarro Cantina Playset
Post by: Jesse James on June 9, 2021, 08:41 PM
Was a good day to be a TVC fan.  A cantina from Navarro playset is awesome.  I’m really excited and curious what packin it gets.

If its fan focused, I hope it'll be The Client.  If its meant to be mass market, it'll probably be some form for Storm/Deathtrooper.

I'd love to see The Client or The Doctor as the pack-in - or even Season 1 outfit Greef Karga would be nice.

Don't do that....don't give me hope.

This was a great surprise.  For me, the pack-in seems like it almost has to be season 1 Greef Karga.  And the eternal optimist in me hopes for a Bounty Hunter's Guild 3-pack to be released around the same time to help fill the place out.

I think it’ll be a remnant trooper or something.  No real precedent to think otherwise...  maybe like Merrick gives some hope I suppose.

I'd always take another Remnant trooper, but I'd obviously like to see something more substantial.

I'd love to get a figure of the Client, too.  But isn't it bizarre that we're clamoring for a figure of Werner Herzog?!?!?

Still, I really like how much he got into his role.  I've seen enough of his work where I thought he might have regarded himself as too much of a film purist to work on a Star Wars series.  So when he really embraced the filmmaking artistry of how the effects team brought the Child to set in such an interactive way, it really resonated with me.

Some details about this set came out during the Collector Media Q&A sessions yesterday.  It sounds like the pack-in figure is set to be an Imperial Death Trooper.  And the set is designed to depict the Nevarro cantina as seen in Chapter 7 and 8 from season 1 of The Mandalorian.  That revelation makes me wonder if this set will be focused more on the exterior of the Cantina?  Because that's where a lot of the fighting took place.

The pack-in's for playsets are going to be army builders (the only exception was Jabba's Palace but even those were repacks).  It makes sense, especially if you need multiple sets to complete it.
But yeah, it'd be nice to get something new.

I'm actually ok with this.  We've had a couple of releases of the Death Trooper already so no one is going to have to go nuts getting multiples to get a bunch of them.

Looking over the pictures, I really wish they'd have been able to include a "unbroken window" piece so you could use the Cantina pre/post Gideon attack.  Would make it easier to buy multiple sets if you could have one window shot-up/out and the other window undamaged.  Oh well.

I ordered one set and may break down and buy a second if they see a price dip after release (like the Tantive and Bespin sets did).

They did something like that - the window frame is interchangeable.  But the lack of the actual window is something that I think is lacking about this set.

The Navarro Cantina is cool to me but lacks the tables/stuff that fills it up as much as the figures themselves haha.

Jeff, what Nick said was something I was discussing with a friend and it does seem to have a dual way to display it.  Did they talk about that in the presentation Nick?  I missed it cuz I had a lot of things going on.  The one picture of the expanded two sets together the window on the right is clean though.

I enjoy this maybe more than most people are but, for my $, I love it.  I wish it had tables, chairs, and an Eweb cannon and stuff, but the reality is I knew this is about what it’d ultimately be. I’m not disappointed.  I’d probably have liked a regular stormie more or a flame trooper with maybe a pushed back flame effect woulda been cool. 🤷‍♂️

In the immortal words of Warner Wolf, let's go to the video(tape) (https://youtu.be/xjtxJqrv-bI?t=11242)!  You have to love that these livestreams get maintained on YouTube, along with being able to link to a particular time stamp.  It's been really helpful to me to be able to nail down some details by re-watching the presentation.

They discussed the interchangeable aspect of the window frame, and that it's held in place with some tabs.  I *THINK* it might be a cardboard piece, but I'm not 100% sure, because there was some crosstalk going on between the people on the panel.  The barware is also interchangeable - some looks intact, and there's another set that's shot up.  I like the attention to detail there, like the jug of Spotchka.  Some tables would be welcome, definitely.

I too would have loved to have seen a slightly different pack-in, even if it was another repack or slight retool of an incinerator trooper, a Jason Sudekis Scout trooper, or a regular stormtrooper. I was looking at this set on Amazon today and I noticed the Death Trooper seems to be packed without his pauldron/bandolier/belt accessory. I had removed it from some of my 3 3/4" black series troopers to mix up the ranks a bit, but it it is disappointing they aren't including it in the package with this figure. It is a bit hard to tell from the lighting in the image, but it also looks like this version may have some additional silver paint apps on the face that might distinguish it a bit. It also might just be reflection from the bubble, it's a little hard to tell for sure even from the loose picture:

Like Jeff and others said, I am a bit bummed that this only comes with the broken window, and likely doesn't have a finished exterior side.

Overall though I am excited for the set. I'm not sure if I will drop the $ on two of them for the extra walls, stools, bar top, but I am looking forward to my first one.

That would be awesome.  Put him helmetless with a drink in the Nevarro Cantina and have a local with a soccer jersey on as a pack-in.

Yeah, he's accurate to the Nevarro scene without it, but since they already have that part tooled up it feels kind of cheap to drop it for this release. Oh well.

Still wish this was something else (The Client!) but I get why they put army builders in these playsets.

I mean, I know the answer is kind of yes, but why?  So people will buy 3 of them?

I would think that if they put a unique figure in them, it would be a wash with all of the people who'd buy one just for the figure.

Or is it so they don't have to make a new figure to have a pack in?

Based on the photos Hasbro shared I would guess it about the width of the Tantive IV set probably just as tall too.

If anyone else was curious, Amazon has it listed as 3.19 x 13 x 7.5 inches / LxWxH.  I'm assuming that doesn't include the actual bar and it would be lay out as deeper than 3.19 inches with that.

Thanks for posting that...these playsets have been my favorite part of modern collecting.

After watching the video, I poked around on eBay and found a set for not ~too~ much more than I was willing to pay, I made an offer and he accepted it so now I should have one of my own next week. (People have asked for a Cardboard Galaxy kit for adding floor, exteriors, etc. so this will allow me to get that stuff developed and up for sale when the preorders start filling, so it wasn't just an impatience thing.  ;D )

Rob, you better believe I will be taking some measurements while I work on it, so I will pass them along when I have it.

The dimensions when set up are 17.5" long, 6" tall (6.5" at the top of the arch) and 4" deep on the halfarch wall that sticks out., Depending on how far you want to space the bar from the wall you've got a lot of leeway there to make it deeper.

Quick review. It is a wall with Cardboard inserts. Ho hum. The bar, stools, and barware are nice accessories that will make it fun to futz with.

I'm pretty excited to see what our own Muftak comes up with to augment this set.  If you follow him on Instagram you might have seen this video (https://www.instagram.com/tv/CYuQr42BL0Q/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link) of him unboxing a shipment with this playset.  I'm personally wondering if he might be attempting to tackle the alcove that's seen to the right of the bar in the show.  This is where the grate is located where Din Djarin and crew escape into the sewers.  Or perhaps a booth?  Either way, I'm excited to see what he comes up with.

I was rewatching th bar scenes from season one today.

The big request I have received is an exterior facade. I am also going to do a floor, and probably a gel for the non-shot up window.

It would be nice to do a second insert for the wall with no window, so a 2nd set can be utilized as an interior wall.

But that big Alcove is really nice looking...I can see that as a further addition down the road...

I’ve seen some previews of this online and I’m ho hum on it honestly.  I’m disappointed in the door and window not being plastic, and the exterior not being covered.  The opening door on the Tantive IV is a feature I really enjoy and will miss on this set.  I like the bar goodies and the quasi expandability of the overall set, but the exterior will annoy me for sure.

I was equally dejected with the Tantive IV backside of the walls lacking detail.  The Jabba Palace was a better presentation that way and it was plausible for them to do some imprinted detail.  Little things such as these have annoyed me on the sets… ironically the Carbon Freeze set, to me, is the nicest singular display but it’s not a modular thing at all.  Two and done.

The Tantive would be better with a little more freedom in how one were to display it, but it has limitations too.  This Navarro Cantina seems to have similar issues.  Kind of weird they don’t leave a little more freedom to the buyer to expand it so they’re enticed to buy more.

I support the idea but if I get extras they’re on sale now.

I got these today…

Gotta say the Navarro Cantina is disappointing to me.  The execution feels lackluster.  Everything about it feels sort of cheap, really.  From the plastic, to the exterior being hollow and undetailed, the cardboard pieces in place of plastic and functional bits… the Tantive IV was much more “significant” in execution than this turned out.  This feels like they really half assed a lot of it.

The highlight is probably the piece of bar and the accessories.  They’re ok but not without flaw… the bottles are molded in single clusters of 3 to save a dime rather than individual ones.  You get a couple glasses and stools.  They look nice together and the stools are nice too, I guess.  That’s little “wow” though.

The way the whole thing is designed it isn’t very conducive to expanding the set to make something more grand, visually speaking, though you can do some expanding, it again falls short of the Tantive IV in that regard.

The pack-in is ok.  I think I’d have liked the flame trooper better though, had they included him with a new flame effect being “pushed back” on him or something, as occurred in the show.  The Death Trooper is ok but nothing we don’t all have plenty of, and getting an obscure pack-in from the show wasn’t ever likely.

In general I’ve enjoyed the sets we got and paid full price for (at least) one… this is one I’d wait it out on though.  It just doesn’t feel worth the $ right now.  Not this time anyway.

Just got mine and opened it up, and I don't think I could argue with anything you're saying Jesse.

Overall I like it, it looks good on the shelf.  But there's not much there for $58 after tax.  The cardboard door wont' stay put...

I do like the 3-piece bottles, just because they stand up on their own.

It's fine.  But it would have been more fine for $39.99.

Thanks Rob.  I feel like the Carboite chamber is under appreciated by playset fans for delivering a complete scene (if you buy 2 of course), while this goes hard the other direction.  It delivers little at all for this particular scene and does it in what feels like a half assed way.  I’m kinda let down because I’d hoped for better.  Hasbro’s use of cheaper materials for the playsets is detracting too.  It makes me appreciate the Bespin one even more honestly.  A lot more HIPS plastic there.

The bar piece works for me, the accessories, not much else.  Def a wait for clearance item if you wanted more.  I’m pondering how I can combine pieces to make it double sided. 😕

My Nevarro Cantina from Pulse finally arrived today. I definitely feel it is the weakest of the playset offerings so far and it was a bit of a letdown.

Echoing some of the other complaints in here, it just feels cheaper than the last few sets, particularly the Tantive IV hallway. Each of the elements being one sided is easily the biggest let down. I really don't care for the cardboard elements (the door and the broken window). I feel like not having a molded plastic door (like the Tantive IV set) is a big miss. For the window, if they were going to make it cardboard, they could have at least included a second version that is not shot out. The paint apps are really flat on the set too. It could have used a dark wash on the textured bits. The accessories are nice, and one of the better parts of the set.

If this had included two side panels, a sliding plastic door, and a plastic window -- OR -- this was priced at $39.99 -- I think my tune would be a lot different.

As is, it will definitely have a spot on the shelf, but now that I've seen it in hand, I'm definitely not going to be picking up multiples like I did with the others.

The cardboard window piece does have both shot and pristine versions in it. If you pull out the cardboard and rotate it 180 degrees you switch the style.

Unfortunately the sculpted hanging lights remain shot up either way. Oops.

Aha! So it does. Well that's at least a slight improvement in how I feel about it. Seems obvious now that I look at it...

Still wish they were plastic though, with a solid clear plastic window

I finally cracked this open last night to add to my Mandalorian shelf.

I'm totally underwhelmed by this, especially for the full retail price, and I didn't need the Death Trooper either.

The bottles, stools, etc. are nice, and the backdrop isn't bad.  But the cardboard door is pretty lame and the bar itself isn't all that detailed or interesting.

I think part of my heartburn is that there just aren't any fun aliens to put in the bar and most of the rest of the characters that interacted with this scene can just as easily stand next to my Razor Crest and fit in.

Ultimately I think it should have been $30 without the Death Trooper and I would feel more okay about its lameness.

I'll keep it in place for now but as soon as I get more space constrained this will be the first thing to go.
