The Vintage Collection / Re: The Future of Star Wars Collecting?
« Last post by Jeff on April 15, 2024, 10:36 AM »
I saw the new Target layout at one of my local stores this weekend.  All the former TVC pegs were now filled with the Epic Hero Series stuff, basic figures and deluxe figures hanging where the TVC basic/deluxe used to be pegged.

I can't help but wonder if Target didn't want to carry two lines at the same 3.75" scale?  One line costs 70% more than the other so they opted to keep the cheaper version (less overhead spent in inventory cost to fill the pegs).    Maybe the answer is to keep Epic Hero figures in the toy aisle and banish TVC to the "collector spot" with all the expensive Funko/Super 7 stuff?  Finally admit that TVC's main support is old guys with disposable income and not kids?

I’d be more worried if this was the first time this has happened at a major retailer, or if they were having a hard time selling anything but Lando.  Surely Star Wars was moving better than $20 Transformers ReAction figures and stuff like that.  If it’s not back in a couple months I’ll start reading into it…

Yep. These were an expensive pain in the ass for someone dumb like me last time.  If I remember right, I spent nearly $250 to get all six.

If they don’t short pack any it’s fine I suppose.

I'm hopeful that its just a "summer break" and that TVC comes back in the fall/winter when toys have a stronger presence at retail.  While I don't really ever buy at retail anymore its critical for volumes to make the line still work.  Target and Wal-Mart are about the only big footprint retailers left that sell these, and if they drop the line I'm not sure how it'll work as anything other than a fan-channel only sort of line.  I'm good with that so long as Hasbro can still make the economics work.

To this day I still don't have the C1 droid from the first wave.  As for these?  I've got a Disney trip planned for later this year, so I'm going to try picking some of these up in Disney Springs.

Yeah that would entirely be a question of what your standards are.  If they’re low, you could certainly do it.

I wouldn't say my standards are low, but I think these things should be toys and not statues.  Ideally you find some balance of both, but things like light up moving chin guns on an AT-AT, and shooting NERF bullets are not screen accurate but pretty cool from a toy perspective.  This version of the N1 definitely seems a bit chunky, but I'll be interested to see how it works from a toy perspective with TVC figures to see if scratches the toy itch.

I certainly don't want the TVC figures slopping around in a giant opening where they can't really sit properly or where a droid/Grogu can't fit right.  Looking at it I'm mostly worried about how the droid/Grogu socket is going to work with TVC figures.  The TVC version handled this fairly well with the different inserts, although I wish you could have fit a whole R5 droid in there and not just a dome.

This article from Yakface seems a little bit alarming:  EXISTING MAINLINE TVC DPCIS NOW ZEROED AT TARGET AND NO PEGS SET

The alarmists in the community seem to be concerned that Target might be dropping the Vintage Collection.  I am more of the opinion that TVC might be getting a bit of a pause at Target.  Per Hasbro, the wave with Count Dooku, the phase I Clone, Cassian Andor and Finn are supposed to be Fan Channel releases.  I haven't seen reports of this wave turning up at big box stores, but I have seen them in GameStop stores, and that is consistent with what Hasbro stated.

It seems like Walmart is currently stocking this wave.  But I have yet to see any sign of these at Target.
1x Grand Admiral Thrawn
1x The Mandalorian (Mines)
1x Huyang
1x Mandalorian Fleet Commander
1x Axe Woves (Privateer)
1x Ahsoka Tano
2x Grogu (Season 3)

Target has also put the TVC deluxe figures on clearance.  But then the whole situation with that was beyond puzzling, with something like 4 - 6 different deluxe figures in stock at a given time, with 2 of those being exclusive.  In the past I would have thought that a retailer would stock twice as many basic figures at their lower price points as they would the deluxe figures.  But I would hardly ever see carded figures in stock at Target.

The whole situation is a head scratcher, for sure.

Sorry for your loss.

First, go to bricklink.com.  Not only can you sell there (I haven't tried selling there, but I have bought random missing pieces I needed several times from sellers there), but they also list all sets with both current and recent sales prices for both loose and boxed sets.  It is a much better pricing resource than relying on ebay.

Second, definitely go with FB marketplace to sell.  There are no fees.  You listing gets set by your general location, so you are not giving out your address.  You can also have the listing open to anyone, so it gives you an ebay type audience.  I have had many people overseas ask about stuff.  Anyone local I just meet in a public area.

While selling everything individually can be quite tedious, don't go with the bulk sale.  You will make so much more putting in the work.  For example, the Death Star II is currently selling for $2500 on average for an unopened one.  MSRP was $299.  There is a lot of that out there for Star Wars legos.  If you have the original Cloud City set, 10123, that is worth $5000+ sealed just because of the Boba Fett mini fig.

I have been selling off my collection for over a year now.  Started with about 400 sets both boxed and loose/complete.  I have sold somewhere around 55-60 sets.  Just from those sales I have made about 70% of the total MSRP of all 400 sets.  It is worth the effort and if most sets are sealed, it is a lot easier and less time consuming to sell.

Thanks a lot guys, appreciate that. He was a great guy and I sure do miss him a lot.  :'(

I have thought about FB marketplace but have not had any experience with that. I guess there are some Lego specific e-commerce sites like Brickmarket like I’ve seen recommended. So I may look into that too.
