Title: Hasbro Tries to Create Their Own Movie Universe
Post by: Jeff on December 15, 2015, 10:52 AM
Under a new deal between the studio [Paramount] and Hasbro's Allspark Pictures, G.I. Joe will join up with characters from the Micronauts, Visionairies, M.A.S.K. and ROM brands (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/paramount-hasbro-gi-joe-universe-848920?utm_source=twitter)

This sounds interesting.... but at the same time, it could be pretty lame based on some of the other Hasbro movies we've seen.

If the Rock runs around with a hologram on his chest and hops into his Camaro that turns into a jet, then I'll be surprised.

Please don't ruin Rom or the Micronauts.  :-\

Fixed this...

Added Goldner: “Hasbro and Allspark Pictures put storytelling merchandising at the center of everything that we do.

I love just about all of these brands with the exception of Visionaries.  Micronauts and ROM are some of my favorite old time comics and I used to watch MASK daily as a kid.  One one hand, it will be great to see these get the big screen treatment.  But I threw up a little when I read that they storylines will be "interconnected."  I could see mixing and matching GI Joe with MASK or having ROM shrink down into the Microverse, but all of them tying together is a pretty big stretch.  Sounds a lot more like trying to build a standardized toy line than "great storytelling."

Hasbro still trying to get their own 'movie universe' off the ground (http://www.latimes.com/business/hollywood/la-fi-ct-hasbro-ambitions-20170321-story.html).

Why?  Just...  why?

The GI Joe movies were a hot mess.  They want to keep at this?

The last TMNT pulled in a quarter billion dollars worldwide.  If you even get close to a hit there's good money to be made.

I've been reading those Revolution comics from IDW where they're trying this same thing, and they're awful. I don't see how a bunch of movies aiming for the lowest common denominator could be any better, but I've been surprised before.

I guess Hasbro recognizes the true strength of their brands isn't in the toys anymore, but the intellectual property.

Hasbro's Revolution Box Set Planned for SDCC debut - $99.99 (http://ew.com/news/transformers-gi-joe-mask-hasbro-toys-first-look/hasbro-first-look/)

Based on the IDW comic book set, the package includes Jetfire, Action Man, Matt Trakker, ROM, Roadblock, Leoric, Dire Wraith, and mini-Micronauts.

I'm kind of curious about this even though I'm sure it will be terrible.  Have a soft spot for Rom growing up with those comics and Jetfire is always awesome...

It's weird to see a Visionaries figure officially redone in modern form.

That IS weird...I remember wanting to get into that line a few years ago and eventually gave up because the stuff is just impossible to find on the secondary market.

I've always wanted a 3&3/4" ROM, but it's not the classic version nor does the Wraith look at all similar, so I can't say I care too much about this one.

Those Micronauts are just garbage...an insult to the original toys which could actually be played with...

Wow....bringing back MASK.  Where are the vehicles?

I agree about the Micronauts.  I had a bunch of the vintage ones when I was a kid.  Great toys back then...these not so much.

That seems to be the main complaint about this set.  It's based on the IDW comic series looks/takes and not the classics.  Matt Trakker isn't the same, ROM isn't the same, the micronauts are just lil mini-figs, etc.

For a one-off box set based on a comics, seems like a fun SDCC set.  I can handle the micronauts being what they are trying to keep everyone in scale, but yeah.  This box is basically a giant tease to fans of all these properties who'd like to see MORE of MASK, GI Joe, ROM, Micronauts, etc.   :-\

If you're actually interested in these, my neighbor has a fair amount of them still on the card for sale.  That and Bravestar stuff.  I think he'd sell it for a really fair price just to get rid of it.  I was going to try to help him unload them, but he's anti-Ebay and we never really found another good outlet.

Hasbro buys Power Rangers franchise from Saban (https://www.cnet.com/news/hasbro-buys-power-rangers-from-saban-brands-in-522m-media-deal/)

I wonder if they'll throw Power Rangers into the Hasbro Cinematic Universe mix?

Based on the last movie I hope not.
