Kubricks / Re: Kubricks and Minimates
« on: March 5, 2004, 10:10 AM »
LordoftheRingsGuide.com has posted a couple of new minimate images from Art Asylum....Gollum and Uruk-Hai Swordsman.  You can check them out here:

New LOTR Mini-mates

This line looks like it could be really cool.  I have always wanted to have a LOTR collection, and really like the Toy Biz figs...but maybe this would be a more "manageable" collection due to the size and my display space constraints :).  These are supposed to start showing up in April/May-ish right?  What figures have been confirmed for the first wave so far?

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Fast Food
« on: March 4, 2004, 05:01 PM »
My wife and I actually don't eat fast food that often (I'm not a big fan, and we try to eat healthy I guess).....but our personal favorite fast food place is probably Arby's.  My dad managed an Arby's when I was a wee lad, and we continued to go there even after he came back to farm...so I always have a lot of memories of going there.  Plus, their roast beef sammiches are just good :).  Used to go to Subway a lot, until a "mom and pop" sub place opened in town and the stuff is a little better (and fresher).  We're also pizza people, if that technically counts as fast food (I don't know if it does).  We also, on occasion visit Sonic...but probably only a few times a year, I think their food is pretty good for fast food.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Movies You Want To See Happen
« on: March 4, 2004, 04:21 PM »
Personally, I'd like to see:

Goonies 2 (been waiting forever for this one, keep hearing rumors)
The Hobbit (with the same team doing it....P. Jackson, etc.)
G. I. Joe (I think it would just be cool to see how they would do it, it is rumored too I believe)
Batman (coming next year from what I have heard...Batman Begins...hope it is good and re-awakens the franchise)
Indiana Jones (supposed to be happening, but keeps getting delayed)

That's a lot of the same thoughts I have too MisterPL.  I find it hard to "care" about the characters as much.  Also, it seems like I like each movie a little more, mainly because there are a few more recognizable things from the Original Trilogy (a few more in AOTC), and likely even more in Episode III.

I also agree with you about the visual effects.  I am someone who really thinks they are done well, just watching a few seconds of Phantom Menace the other night on Fox...it does (with the shadowing, etc.) actually sometimes look like those battle droids and gungans could really be there.  But, at the same time, it is just too overdone.  Maybe I was just a stupid kid, but I really didn't have any problems with Yoda, Jabba, etc. just being puppets back in the day.  I believed it I guess, and I actually think they still look pretty realistic...at least as much as aliens can.  The story should have been the main focus, and the acting....and the visual effects are secondary and will take care of themselves.  A good example of this is the Lord of the Rings movies.  These were all tremendous films, and had a lot of visual effects (and great ones)...but it wasn't the focal point of the movie because the story and acting was so great.  Great points MisterPL, enjoyed reading them!

Saga '02-'04 / Saga Purchases - What You Have So Far This Year
« on: March 4, 2004, 03:43 PM »
Just thought I'd post an update of what I've been able to find (or get with some help from Mr. JediMAC) this year.  It seems like a little bit of a drought around here lately, after a pretty good month in January.  Is it kind of slowing down around you right now too?  So far this year for me I have found (or received):

Hoth Wave
Luke Skywalker (Hoth Attack)
R-3PO
Hoth Trooper (skipped this one)

Tatooine Wave
Jedi Luke Skywalker (Jabba's Palace)
R2-D2 (Jabba's Sail Barge)
R1-G4

Animated Clone Wars
Obi-Wan
Anakin
Assaj
Dooku
Yoda
Clone
Durge
Mace

Ultra Figures
Wampa
C-3PO with Escape Pod
General Rieekan

Figures from 2003
Concept Stormtrooper
Outlander Club Obi-Wan

Still on the lookout for Jabba's Palace wave (especially Skiff Lando), Ultra Jabba and his denizens, and the Yavin wave as well (as many of you probably are).  It is nice that everything is coming out earlier than normal this year (so far), but it sometimes makes me feel "behind" :).  Best of luck to all of you in your searches.

The Prequel Trilogy / Originals vs. Prequels
« on: March 4, 2004, 03:14 PM »
I know there gets to be a lot of OT vs. PT debate, and this topic has been discussed before, but I was just thinking about this a little bit today.  I too am one of many of you who believe the OT is infinitely better than the PT, although I do enjoy the PT movies for the most part as well (especially looking forward to III).  I'm not a big fan of Phantom Menace, and honestly, if it wasn't Star Wars...I probably wouldn't ever watch it really (I rarely do anyways).  I enjoyed Attack of the Clones a lot when it first came out, and do think it is a good Star Wars movie...its just not quite the same for some reason.  Nostalgia might be a big part of that, but for many of us there is more.  What do you think the Original Trilogy had, that the Prequels are missing (for you personally)?

There are many things that we can point to probably, the "magic" and story being two main ones.  We'll cover a lot of them I'm sure, but I thought I'd bring up something I have been thinking about...characters.  I was thinking today how so many characters from the OT are iconic.  Han, Luke, Leia, Chewie, R2, 3PO, Vader, Yoda, Fett, Lando....these characters are all, for the most part, common knowledge in the world today.  Plus, one thing that might have helped this is that...with the exception of different clothing, they were the same character...age wise, etc.  With the prequels, we have Anakin as a boy, then ten years later (with a different actor), and now leading into Episode III (which will probably be our favorite version of Anakin from the prequels).  It seems that with many of the characters, there is too much jumping around (Maul..Jango...Dooku...Sidious).

Another thing about characters is the fact that in the prequels, many come and go.  We had Darth Maul (who many really liked), but then at the end of the movie, he's gone.  Next we have Jango, then he's gone.  Dooku appears, and by his absence in the OT...he's most likely gone as well.  We'll also have another baddie in Episode III, that I'll leave out of the discussion because of spoilers.  In the OT, you associated "evil" and "bad" with Darth Vader.  The character, the costume, the music, etc.  I think it is hard to build that association with some of the prequel villains, for the main fact that they aren't around long enough too.  Much can be said of the "good guys" too, although I do think they (and Ewan McGregor) have done a nice job with Obi-Wan Kenobi in these movies.

I guess maybe it is unfair to compare them, because in a way...they are different trilogies.  The OT seemed a little clearer-cut "good vs. evil" movie, while the PT becomes more blurred with Anakin's transition, much of the behind the scenes "secretive" stuff (Palpatine), and maybe isn't quite as cut and dry.  Although I enjoy the entire saga, and really look forward to Episode III.....something just isn't the same with these prequel trilogies.  Since I'm an NBA fan, I often use this analogy to my friends who ask me what I think of the movies:  To me it is like Michael Jordan...I was a huge Jordan fan when he was with the Bulls...he was just the greatest to ever play....then when he came back with the Wizards, I followed him again...and still liked him, he was still good (but older), but it just wasn't the same.  Sorry for my extended ramblings, one of our servers is down at work so I don't have much to do right now...and this is just something that I've been thinking about.  I'd be anxious to read any of your opinions/suggestions.

Other Toy Lines / Re: Muppets
« on: March 4, 2004, 02:39 PM »
That really is one sweet figure.  I have been doing my best to avoid collecting the Muppets line, and this makes it even harder.  I might have to pick it up if/when available at StarWarsShop.com...but then I'll probably just want to get more and more of these great figures ;).  Does anyone know the expected price for this piece?

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Are You a Star Wars Packrat?
« on: March 4, 2004, 11:15 AM »
That's funny Scott, my wife and I were actually doing the same thing this past weekend.  She has been on me about getting rid of some of the cardboard "crap", and I had a rubbermaid container full of them too.  I did purge a little bit of stuff, but still have a long way to go.  I don't know why I think I need to keep the cardbacks, I just do.  I really need to just dump it and forget about it, but for some reason it is hard.  I thought about getting rid of all (or most) of it...just keeping examples of each type of packaging I have, and then starting fresh and keep the OTC cardbacks coming later this year, since they are a little bit "spiffier".  It really shouldn't be so difficult to throw away cardboard and the packaging, should it? :)

Yeah, that was a great game Scott.  I wasn't surprised that Minnesota won, but a little bit surprised by the score.  I'm getting psyched for the playoffs too, I really think the 'Wolves have a decent shot this year.  KG is just unbelievable, and if he doesn't get the MVP this year, I'll be quite upset :).

Original Trilogy Collection / Re: Fan Choice's On Repacks
« on: March 4, 2004, 10:38 AM »
Not that it matters a whole lot really, but I guess I am kind of surprised that the Scanning Trooper is winning.  I personally don't have one either, but from the pictures I have seen of it online, it is definitely not in the category of today's sculpting/articulation, etc.  I mean, of course, I don't have to buy it if it wins...but I would just as soon have seen one of the other figures win this poll.  Especially since they are going to be placed on the nifty OTC packaging.  The Han Solo looks like the only one within striking distance, and I would much rather see a carded Stormtrooper Han for once, even though the figure isn't perfect.  It would still be neat to see I think.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Official Television Thread
« on: March 4, 2004, 09:59 AM »
I'm not sure how many of you catch "That 70s Show", but the one that was on last night was a pretty good one.  They are always good for a few Star Wars lines now and then, and last night was probably the most I have seen.  Billy Dee Williams (Lando) guest-starred as Eric and Donna's pastor, with him they have pre-marriage counseling.  He goes on several times with Eric about how Star Wars is the best movie of all time, and uses some quotes/scenes from the movie as many of his examples.  It was a pretty good one.

Kubricks / Re: Kubricks and Minimates
« on: March 3, 2004, 03:19 PM »
Those Muppet Kubricks do look great.  It was tough to avoid the regular figure line for me as well, but if these weren't too hard to find/pick up...they would be tempting.  When do these start to get released (if anyone knows)...and are there any further details on the line?  I could really see a person getting into being an all-out Kubrick/Minimate collector.  I know I'd like to be able to pick up the Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Muppets, and Batman lines.

Also, I know this is a stupid question...but I'm not very knowledgable on the mini-figs.  Are all the Kubrick figures overseas only (with minimates being the U.S. ones).  I was just curious, as to the availability of the lines (like LOTR, Muppets).  I know that Star Wars is always overseas (or buying them from online retailers).  Thanks!

.......had to add this after actually going back and reading through the Kubricks/Minimates thread here.  I see that DC minimates are going to be available now too?  I was wondering when/if these would be coming out.  Other than the Star Wars kubricks, I'm really tempted by the Lord of the Rings, Batman/Justice League, and maybe the Muppets mini-figures.  I was curious what these cost, or how tough they are to collect?  I know the Kubricks tend to be kind of tough (at least from what I have read here).  Thanks...again :).

Other Toy Lines / 2024: What Are You Collecting?
« on: March 3, 2004, 03:13 PM »
For those who also visit GH, forgive me because there is a thread going over there on this same topic.  I think we had a thread going here about what everyone collected, but I think it is buried in Watto's somewhere...so I thought I'd start one here in the "Other Toy Lines" forum.  If I shouldn't have done that, feel free to delete :).

I was just curious, since it is a new year and there have been changes to many lines (or some disappearing), what you are collecting (or would like to collect).  Although I have been tempted by a number of lines, for the most part it all comes back to Star Wars for me.  With the focus on the OT this year, and with some great OTC and Vintage OTC stuff coming up later on...I haven't had the budget for much else (and I'm not sure if I will).  Plus, my wife isn't too keen on the idea of me collecting another line besides Star Wars.  That said....

Collecting For Sure

Star Wars 3 3/4" - Basic, Ultra, possibly ships (maybe the retooled Falcon later this year)
Star Wars Unleashed - OT characters only for now, these things take up a lot of space so I can't have so many anyways.
Star Wars Playskool - If they ever bring it back  ::)

Lines I'm Interested In, but Not Sure About Yet

I like these lines, but mainly because of budget, I'm not sure if I will be able to collect

Lord of the Rings - I have always been interested in this line, but haven't been able to collect it the way I had hoped.  I only have a couple of figures, but I would like to pick up some of the upcoming (or current) versions of some of the main characters.  It depends on a few things I guess.

Marvel Legends - I have just been collecting the X-figures...but again because of my toy budget, I may have to give them up.  I'd really like to pick up figures such as Juggernaut, Brown Wolvie, Iceman, Phoenix, Apocalypse, and Storm if I was able to though.

Batman/Justice League - I've always been a big Batman fan, and I really liked the Super Friends growing up...as well as the current Justice League show on Cartoon Network.  I'm probably a little late on the Justice League figures, because I'd only want the main, non-variant versions...and those are a little past now I think.  I picked up the 6" Mattel Zipline Batman a couple of weeks ago, and thought about getting more from this line...but Mattel isn't the best with lines (obviously), and I'm not sure where this line will be headed once the animated "The Batman" line hits.  I might take a look at that one too.

Lines That Are Gone....or Close

Simpsons - I've always liked this line, but again (broken record) just never got into it.  Now it sounds like it might be on the way out?

Masters of the Universe - The figures in this line were/are great, but the packing ratios and Mattel's practices in general look to have killed the line.  The only figure I really wanted to get was Roboto, and that wave never showed anywhere near me.

Other "Cool" Lines

I think these lines are great, but know that I either can't afford or just won't be able to collect them (too far behind in some cases):

The Muppets
Kubricks/MiniMates (these are great little toys though, wish I could afford to collect them)
DC Direct Stuff
upcoming Sesame Street
McFarlane SportsPicks (although I'd like to pick up a Kevin Garnett somewhere maybe...probably ebay I guess since it is older)

Anyways, sorry it got so long...what are your collecting plans (or hopes) for 2004?  Best of luck to all of you that you are able to collect (and find) everything you are looking for!

Michael was indeed on Scrubs, playing an obsessive compulsive.  He was very good, and it was great seeing him back on TV.  I was psyched to hear he was going to be on Scrubs, that is one of my favorite shows.
