Title: Disney Star Speeder 1000 playset
Post by: Phrubruh on August 17, 2010, 09:52 AM
According to the Disney theme park merchanise pannel at CV there will be a new 3 3/4 scale Star Speeder 1000 playset! It is suppost to hold up to nine figures. Not sure if this is more of a case or a real playset but it seems to have doors that open on the sides and removable top.

If that is true, and it is in scale, and despite the fact that I really don't know much about Star Tours itself (having never been to it), I will buy it.

I never did buy that scaled down version that came out years ago, but I dig it - especially if it's to scale with the figures.  Haven't been on the ride since I was 16ish at Disneyland, but someday...I will be back.   :)

I would too. I have been on the ride and I love the generic-ness of the vehicle. This will be interesting, if this is happening it will be at the launch of the new ride.

I agree with JACK, the sheer generic nature of the design would get me to buy it if it's not absurdly priced.

He is - and that's why I send Paul the money up-front, he's helped me twice already and if he's game, I'll impose on him again when this thing comes out.

Hopefully, it won't be more than $50.

Post by: JACKOFTRADZE on August 17, 2010, 11:19 PM
If it's well done I will buy it regardless of price. Disney exclusives are not cheap but I must say I have been very happy with them. The Jedi Academy, The Mickey Deco Astro and the Boarding Party have been very nice. I think the Academy pack had the most to offer but I was happy to pay a premium to get Teek who would otherwise never get made.

Getting a scale Star Tours Vehicle is pretty damn cool if you ask me. I almost consider these OT given it's history.
Now if they do Cindel and the Quaker Oats guy I will be a very happy collector.

It's pretty big which means it will not be cheap. I really like what I see, I wonder is Hasbro making this for Star Tours if so some good Q&A questions in regards to this item will be most welcome.  I hope they stick to the plan to make it scaled and detailed. They will have a real winner here if they do!

I am more excited about this vehicle than every upcoming one we officially know about.

I'm pretty sure the ship in this pic is just a repaint of the Action Fleet size Starspeeder 3000 that came out a few years back. I snagged one the last time I was at Disney. It's a pretty cool little ship, but the weird looking R2 is the giveaway.

(Speaking as Obi-Wan) "That's no Action Fleet Vehicle!"

Diddly, we are referring to the other slides under new development. Check out the slides again, it's 20 inches long and close to 8 inches high. It's definitely not the Action fleet. Plus, it clearly states it's a Large Scale Playset. Take a look at the measurements on the slide.

I have no doubt they may rerelease the one you describe in the new deco. But this appears to be scaled with the regular line. I never picked it up but good to know it was a nice toy.

Guess you didn't click the link in the post Diddly quoted...  :P

There are TWO Star Speeders and folks are obviously confusing them  - the larger one that kicked off this thread (which is the one in your slides JACK) and then the new "1000" repaint of the old Star Speeder 3000 Action Fleet style ship, which is what was linked in the post Diddly quoted -

Title: Re: Disney Star Speeder 1000 playset

My guess will be May of next year when the ride reopens. My guess it will be about $75-$99 since it's Disney. This would be a $50 ship if it was released at Target.

Curto indicated in his CV Part 1 coverage that Hasbro is not having anything to do with this...  Maybe that was said before - but it is news to me.  I wonder if we can expect the same quality we see in Hasbro products?  Or perhaps, will we see a lesser price tag?
Title: Re: Disney Star Speeder 1000 playset
Post by: JACKOFTRADZE on August 25, 2010, 04:08 PM
That was news to me too. I am not worried about quality, I do not expect Hasbro level but not anything atrocious.

I do not think the price will be that great. Just a heads up, China has increased their minimum wage by 20% for the entire country this year, manufacturing juts got a lot more expensive. Every factory is going to take this hit. Expect many items in 2011 to be a lot more expensive. This is country wide so this affects everything manufactured there. I would not be surprised if $10 is the normal price at every store for vintage in 2011.

I am still buying this regardless, I think it's a cool concept despite it not being made by Hasbro. Now if a company would do dioramas "playsets"...

No info yet. Disneyland is currently working on redecorating their Star Trader store while Star Tours 2 is built. My guess is the store will reopen on June 4th with the attraction and we should see the StarSpeeder playset then.

But what do I know.... ;)

Updated prototype packaging pic from JD's Star Tours 2 launch coverage (http://www.jedidefender.com/newspro/fullnews.cgi?newsid1306207648,77930,).

The store's stock was pretty good too, and there were some upcoming releases on display. I snapped a few photos of them, including the Full Size Starspeeder 1000 Prototype Packaging, due out later on the fall. The MSRP on that beast is $54.95, but collector's of Hasbro's action figures are definitely going to want this!

This thing reminds me of that Saturday morning live action sci-fi show from my childhood, where a bunch of scientists rolled around a post-apocalyptic America in a tricked out futuristic RV like this. Anyone else remember that? Cannot think of the name for the life of me. Sort of like Space 1999, but cheesier somehow.

Yeah...  well, for me it is.  I always put those background ssenators in their own category...  Seppie leaders, Orn Free tah, Senator Palpatine...  Those lame, boring, guys.  The Lucas family sans Jett...  You know the type.  Barely poseable, if at all, and usually decoed nicely.  The kind of figure that makes you debate the purchase, especially at anything above $7.

No, the first time it was shown to us was from a DISNEY presentation at Celebration 5...

According to the Disney theme park merchanise pannel

When Hasbro was asked, they basically said it was Disney's thing and since we have no Disney Q&A... we've got no new info.  :(

Last solid update was put out there at Star Wars Weekends 2011 -

Has anyone seen this in action at a show to understand the features?

It has not been officially unveiled or shown at any shows yet, the pic in the latest insider is pretty much all we have seen of the final product (assuming that is the final product in the SW Insider).

If the original draft copy on the back of the prototype box (http://forum.rebelscum.com/imagepopup.php?imagename=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.rebelscum.com%2Fphotogallery%2Fdata%2F500%2FDSC_3983.JPG) can be trusted, it looks like it will have...
- 4 changable view screens (based on the ride)
- spots for up to 10 standard 3.75" figures
- a removable roof
- a slot for a removable R2-D2
- a hidden nook for a camera droid
- fully functioning passenger doors
- hidden pop-out guns
- have lights and C-3PO sound bites from the ride

Again, this was the prototype box so no guarantees all that makes the final product.  Though the insider text in the pic above (which is small, so it's hard to read for now) seems to confirm most of them.

Title: Re: Disney Star Speeder 1000 playset

It stands for Annual Pass. They range in price from $200-$500 (depending on black out days) with an extra $100 for parking. That makes it a little expensive for the family to have right now. Typically the new star tours merchanise is only available in the park. Annual Passes also give discounts of 10%-15% depending on pass level and store. That is why I was able to give you a good discount last time.

Please note that it is not an easy thing to buy stuff there. You have to do deal with parking, the tram, security checks and getting into and out of the park. They do make it nice that they will hold you packages during the day. You can buy stuff in the morning and pick it up at the end of the day anywhere in the park. If you don't pick them up within three days, they ship them to you.

Last time I layed out about $600 and had to make three trips. (of course you guys paid really quick except one guy that never did) This time around, I'm guessing I'd have to lay out about $800 and have to figure out how to drag them out of the park and find shipping boxes big enough to fit them. It sounds really expensive to do.

I'd love to do it but I just can't right now. Maybe next year. Besides, this stuff will hang around for years. There is no rush.

completely makes sense and it is completely understandable Phruby - I did not realize these things were park only items.  That would be a pain to haul for sure.

I am still very thankful for the Teek set you were able to get for me.   ;D

There is a video on Attractions Magazine showing the new Star Speeder 1000 playset. That thing is huge! It is shown in the video about 16 minutes in. It will retail for $54.99 and be available at the end of December. They mentioned it will be available at Once Upon a Toy in Downtown Disney in Orlando and inside the Tatooine Traders. That means it will be available at Disneyland's Star Trader and the World of Disney outside the park!!!

I think it is just a repainted camera droid from ep1. Besides, what is the point of the droid? They mention it in the preshow but don't do anything with it on the ride. The droid's name is IC360

Boy I'd love to know the specifics of licensing, and how this all goes about.  Hasbro's worked with Disney before of course, but not on this apparantly, yet it's totally compatible with Hasbro figures, falls under the LFL umbrella...  That's some odd twists and turns in the action figure licensing/lfl licensing world.  Especially since Hasbro's sort of known for being protective.

There are times in the business world where Vendor A will resell a product made by Vendor B, and market/sell it as though Vendor A produced/manufactured/etc... the item.

My guess is that Hasbro was involved in some form/fashion, even if it was just to (a) supply the license and be compensated for it; and (b) assist with design/manufacturing.

I have no doubt that when we're able to get our hands on it, somewhere on the box will be the Hasbro logo.

I'm not so sure.  Hasbro was asked about this specifically, and said they had nothing to do with it at the time.  It's been a bit of an enigma from day 1.

Finally watched the video and I'm kinda bummed because it looks like there's no slot for Rex (am I just now discovering there are TWO Captain Rexes in Star Wars?). Oh well.

That included R2 looks kinda statue-esque as well but it looks like any old Astromech will fit.

Here are some pictures of the three that we were able to drag out of the park. We had to double bag them and make a strap so we could put them on our backs for the track back to the parking structure and Down Town Disney. They are surprisingly heavy. They are all spoken for but I am talking to a cast member friend about getting a couple more.

My buddy opened one of his. He says the pilot chair is removable and REX-24 fits perfectly in the slot. There is unfortunately no REX dialog though but this ship could make for a great customizing oportunity. The background screen is changable and creates different sound effects. There are four buttons on the back that make different sounds or operate the doors or lights. Its very simular to the smaller version they offered last year. R2 and the camera droid are removable. R2 is also a full droid and very clean. I'll have some opened pictures later.

I was checking out the pics at GalacticHunter's story on the Starspeeder's release (http://www.galactichunter.com/gh/story/star-speeder-1000-playset-now-available-gallery), and love the fact you can sneak Rex into the cockpit.  That's a nice touch.

Tons of actual thought went into this thing's design.  Hats off to the designers involved.

I'm going to get one, but easily could see myself getting a 2nd and painting it maybe in Republic markings just as a Coruscant shuttle or something.

I think I'll make my own "screen" for in it...  Something more generic like a starfield background or whatnot, but really this is seriously one of the cooler toys for the basic figures it seems.  And it's not even priced horribly for all the cool stuff it ultimately does.

Deliver a Gunship of this kind of quality (good price, great scale, lights/sounds, great features/displayability) and man, I'd probably be in for like 3 anyway...  It's like the new AT-ST and Snowspeeder.  I bought in bulk.  Quality ropes me in if the price is right.

I wouldn't worry.  Disney I'm sure anticipated popularity, they rarely sell out of anything, and it JUST released so I think if they did sell out, they'd make more.  If the molds are done, it's just gravy to pump out another round if they're selling that well.

That is why less than I'm thinking the shipping will be for the three I have to ship off. I'm trying to figure out the best way to ship them. Finding a box that will fit them is proving to be a challange. Maybe I'll flatten an old box and fashion my own box to go around it. I worry about the sides of the box being crushed since there is no plastic on them.

Yeah, the lady I spoke with tonight said she could ship it from either Disney locations.  Mine is coming UPS from Florida so I guess it is cheaper that route than shipping it from California (I am in NW Indiana).  Said she couldn't give a good hard date because of the Christmas season which is understandable.  Probably after Christmas is my guess.

Well looking at the completed auctions, Rex seems to be around $12-$14. The new Star Speeder is pretty rare on ebay right now. I saw only one completed auction for $110. There is a guy that is scalping them for $93 + $46 shipping.

I got mine today!  Damn this thing is impressive!  Hasbro needs to take some notes and this is a must for all collector's collections.  The only thing I can think that needs tweaked on this thing is 3po's voice - way too loud - it makes the toy vibrate and gets muffled - he seriously may blow out the speaker!

Also would have been cool if the slides that go into the viewing screen lit up and were semi transparent.

Ultra cool toy!

not just price, but lights, sounds, spring loaded weapons/doors, removable compartments, etc. etc. etc.

edit: and on the pricing?  $55 for this ship vs. what?  $40-45 for that travel agency Disney exclusive set...  comparing the two makes me totally resent buying that travel agency set.  Oh well what is done is done - maybe I will learn next time?

But what do you think about the quality of the plastic? It seems to be of a lower quality than a typical Hasbro ship. It's not as bad as the sarlac  base but it feels different. That R2 reminds me of a cheap candy dispenser. He instantly got replaced with a Hasbro R2.

Does your doors get stuck when they open? I have to force them fully open (making the welcome sound) to make them close.
Title: Re: Disney Star Speeder 1000 playset
Post by: shmashwitdaclub on December 23, 2011, 07:16 PM
the plastic, I guess yeah it may be slightly less solid than the standard Hasbro ship, and R2 was just a place holder to me anyway, though looking at he doesn't look bad.

As for the doors - If I push the button all the way in and the doors open and stay open.  I press the button again and the doors close.  I push the button half way in and the doors open and close when I let the pressure off of my finger.

I'm at Disney World right now and just got off Star tours (I was the Rebel Spy :) ), but the gift shop didn't have the Star Speeder (although it had three Echo Base troopers :) ).  Anyone know if I can get the vehicle here?

Four more Echo Base troops the third time through the ride, but no Starspeeders.

You SHOULD be able to, but by all accounts I've heard, it's sold out (via phone calls mostly I guess).

They are getting more though, early this year, supposedly.  But yeah, you're there and nothing to buy.  That sucks.  :-\

Did you ask them?

Sometimes when you ask them, they will bring out new ones. They might have not has a chance to put more out.

I won't be able to get one of these until February.  By then, it will be gone.  :(

There is good news and bad news on the Star Speeder 1000 front.

The good news is they are back in stock at Disneyland and elsewhere.

The bad news is they raised the price from $55 to $69.

OUCH!  I thought $55 was too cheap to begin with, but oh well...   :-\

Just ordered mine, because oddly enough, we do not have a Disney Trip planned in the next few months. (Sell your stock now....)

Hey at least they're back, and honestly I think $70's still not shabby on that item.  It's got a lot of cool in there.  I'm ok with that price for it.

Mine finally arrived today.  I was worried that the shipping from California to New York was going to ruin it, but Disney actually packed it well with padding, and even included a shopping bag that my girlfriend likes.

Curious but what'd it run you with shipping?

Good grief... is that a new R2 in there?

Anyone only want the ship and feel like selling me one?

I can't recall if it's something new or not Rob, but when I get mine I'd probably be fine selling the R2 off to you.

Funny.  I've bought a few 3 3/4 waves from Disney and they included a shopping bag, but no padding whatsoever.

Rob, I believe it's a Happy Meal Toy Quality R2... here's a pic (http://www.endorexpress.net/2011/12/photo-review-star-tours-starspeeder-1000-vehicle-playset/img_0070-2/) of the one with the ship next to the Vintage R2

That being said, I'll gladly sell you mine ;D

As lame as it is, I'd probably take it off your hands.  PM me and let me know what you think is a fair price for it.

I snapped some shots of my Starspeeder and included a couple comparison shots of the Disney R2 next to the Hasbro one:

Just got home from a trip to visit the House of Mouse, and was able to snag one of these before we left.  It's so big it had to be my carry-on for the flight home! It looks incredible!

Got news from my buddy that he picked up one of these for me today, and even on a bit of a discount, so I'm finally set on this piece.  Can't wait to have it here in person to mess with it, but where the hell to put it!?  :)  Saw one in person at the toy show over the weekend, and wow is it nice.  I mean, really big.

This thing, and the MTT, are probably going to be similar in size, but about double the price to get the MTT...  That's a joke.

My buddy just offered to nab me a 2nd one because he knew I wanted to do a custom second version of the ship.  It's really one of the finest vehicles in the line and Hasbro had nothing to do with it.  Funny.

I noticed these things are available outside the park in the World of Disney store at Disneyland. They had a price increase since their original debut.

Always two, there are. Been waiting for the updated version and came across it accidently when I was looking for the holiday droid on the Disney Parks app. $75 smacks doesn't seem unreasonable with pricing of vehicles now. Glad  I didn't bite on the original on ebay/non-affiliated Disney resellers when it hit $110+.

It was $55 when it came out. Disney saw how well it sold they instantly up the price. It's been that price since.
