Title: Target Exclusive Imperial Shuttle
Post by: MetalJedi on May 14, 2006, 08:58 PM
RS reports that the Imperial Shuttle with be released again this time to Target. Price point will be $59.99 and will come with 2 figures.

While this is pure speculation, this would rock as I personally do not own one. And the price is pretty good considering the 2 pack-ins it comes with.

What was the original price? $100??

Yeah, that sucker was $100. at KBToys then they dropped the price down to $59.99 then back up.

Sweetness! I'm guessing the two figures will be:
-2 POTJ Imperial Officers
Or
-1 POTJ Imperial Officer & 1 Imperial Dignitary
Or
-1 ROTS Emperor Palpatine & 1 SAGA Red Royal Guard
Or
-2 SAGA Red Royal Guards

I'm guessing ROTS Palps and maybe an ROTS Imperial Guard or a Stormtooper or an Imperial Officer or Vader...

That would be excellent news. I've been trying to pick up a Vintage or Modern one for less that $100 on ebay, but I haven't had any luck so far. I'll definitely be picking one up. :)

Originally it was 125 from FAO.  When KB took it over it was cheaper.

$60 is fair for this ship.  When I see it at Target, I'll probably buy it this time around.  I passed on it for $125 at FAO, and soon after FAO got what they deserved.

This ship would sell big at the $60 price.  You can guess it will go on clearance eventually.  That will be even nicer.  I remember Sears had the last version online for $50 at one point.  I was able to grab one for that price.

This is great news to me, if true.  I couldn't afford the last version, and always regretted not picking one up.  I hope that we end up seeing this, and I'll definitely grab one at $59.99.

Post by: Jeff on May 15, 2006, 11:06 AM
Hmmm...  If this is true, I'll wait for the clearance.  I've got the FAO/KB version (and got soaked the full $120 for it  :-[).

Considering Target had trouble moving a $40 exclusive vehicle, I wonder how this one will do... maybe they plan to have it for the DVD release, that might make a bit more sense I guess.

Guess I need to put out a few feelers to my Target friends...  ;)

I find this info kind of questionable as well.  The ship really did poorly at full price.  On the otherhand, $60 aint to shabby.  Hopefully the pack-ins wont be anything spectacular so I can steer clear of this one.
Title: Re: TSC Imperial Shuttle??
Post by: CHEWIE on May 15, 2006, 11:38 AM
I already have the FAO one... but will probably go ahead and get this too.  It's too great of a ship to pass up.

I wonder what the paint scheme will be like?  Will it be slightly weathered like the FAO/KB one?

Hopefully fans will support this item... which is what needs to be done in order to hopefully get some new vehicles/playsets made.

Much better than getting another Falcon repack!

Jesus, what a kick in the nuts this is!

A $125 vehicle (with no figures) rumored to be back in the mix at half the price with two figures?!

Sounds too good to be true considering the higher prices that we've been seeing on vehicles (see TRU AT-AT and Gunship).

I think a lot of people will, if the price remains at $60.  I think that's great and if it was a nice OTC-styled display/window box with pack-in figs, I'd grab it at regular price for sure.   But the cynical side of me says no way will it be $60 when a re-done AT-AT without electronics is running $80 at a competitor.  I can't help but think someone inverted a 9 (as in $90) to make it a 6.

In the process of moving I dug out the old shuttle box and $60 for that is pretty good.  Someday I'll even open mine :P
Title: Re: TSC Imperial Shuttle??

Color me unconvinced at this point.
With Target being the new home of 12-13.00 single figures and a recent $40.00 Tie Fighter, $60.00 for a BIG ship and two figures would be more than a little out of character.
They do keep their battle packs to a decent price...
but this seems too good to be true. I hope I'm wrong, I know my nephew would love one and at that price I would make his Christmas.

Title: Re: TSC Imperial Shuttle??
Post by: iFett on May 15, 2006, 11:18 PM
I can't see this happening especially with the issue most retailers have with huge toys in huge boxes that clog up shelf space.  Target would maybe able to stock, what 2-4 at the most at any given time.  I already have the vintage and Saga versions, but I'm a sucker for vehicles - especially repaints.  Maybe it will be painted to go with the Endor deco that the AT-AT will have?

Oh, I also don't think that $59.99 is right if this ship is indeed rumored to be coming out.
Title: Re: TSC Imperial Shuttle??
Post by: CHEWIE on May 15, 2006, 11:22 PM
I can see it happening.  It's a large box, but they could put them on an endcap or whatever, or even on risers for space... remember what they did with the 12" Speederbikes?

As for price, what's so unbelievable about it?  The Falcon costs less and the amount of plastic is similar... same goes for the Gunship.

Think positive people, think positive.  ;)

Say it with me together now...

Good things can happen, pessimism is negative and there is no future in that.   ;D

Title: Re: TSC Imperial Shuttle??
Post by: iFett on May 15, 2006, 11:41 PM
DOOM!  I say  DOOM!  ;)

Hmm.  I Forgot about the 12" Speeders.  They did fairly well except for Leia - at least in my area.  Oh well...I'll keep my thoughts positive and I'll just end up using the DCPI trick when I hear they're starting to hit.  I never really paid attention after I picked up my Tie Fighter, but how many of those did Targets typically have stocked??  2-6 maybe?

Price??  I got raped at FAO for like $130-$140 after shipping so maybe I'm just hoping the $60 price point doesn't hold true so it doesn't hurt my ego.

Okay...Looks like Brent posted before me here.  Sarcasim again, no?

I'm actually lookiing forward to this as I missed out on the original version from FAO/KB.  And if the $60 price tag holds true that makes it all the better.  I'm getting a little sticker shock with the price of vehicles these days ($30 for the starfighters/hailfire/AAT and $45 for the gunship!!!), so a reduction from the original $100-$125 would be welcomed.

Where my concern comes in is that the smaller Target stores like the one in my area never seem to get the same volume as the Target Greatland stores and thus I usually only see one or two at best of the larger vehicles.  The TIE Fighter was the exception as they had about 6, but 4 of them ended up on clearance for $28.  The shuttle is not something I'm going to wait to go on clearance...

I've been wondering the same thing. I've been such an outspoken critic of the $13 figs, but yet, I have to admit that the $20 BP thing is reasonable. $60 for the shuttle seems very reasonable to me.

$60 for a shuttle plus figs as a bonus is totally worth it. Even if it didn't come with figures I think it's a bargain. I'll be picking one of these up for sure if the rumors turn out to be true.

Can go either way I guess.  If you think positive all the time, maybe you do get some letdowns and are naive at times... but I still think that being optimistic is better.

Yes, this is a much more realistic price for fans that want this piece.  That FAO price was insane several years back.  My only worry is that people bought this already back in the day and they won't buy it this time around.  LIke me.  I am not going to buy it because I have mine already.  I don't want another one.

However, I can just see Hasbro putting this out there at that price and then throwing their hands up in the air bellowing "We can't even sell the Shuttle for a measley $60!!!"  When something new like a AT-TE or Turbo Tank or Death Star Playset at that price range would sell instead of another rehashed vehicle from the early 1980's.  The 80's for Pete's sake.   I know, I know...I know why they do that but it's said to see toys from the 70's and 80's repackaged all the time (even if they are childhood favorites).
Title: Re: TSC Imperial Shuttle??

Can I split the difference?

I'm optimistic that it will be re-released at some point, but pessimistic that the price will be $60 if it does show up.   ;)

Either way, I've got two shuttles, so unless those pack-in figures are cool or the paint job is really something special, I'll pass.  That's 1 more on the shelf for the rest of you who need it!

Title: Re: TSC Imperial Shuttle??
Post by: ruiner on May 16, 2006, 01:47 PM
Yeah, I can't believe it'd be $60.  That's probably the price FAO paid for it (assuming a 50% markup).

Then again, I don't think a vehicle can survive at retail at more than $50....

Title: Re: TSC Imperial Shuttle??
Post by: Darth Slothus on May 16, 2006, 02:08 PM
To me 60$ seems expensive but, then again, I don't have a shuttle. I think Retail justifies the high price point on recent vehicles (over 40$) because basic figures are now at 7$. 60$?-I bet they pay Hasbro 40$ or less for it.
Title: Re: TSC Imperial Shuttle??
Post by: Nathan on May 16, 2006, 02:42 PM
$60 sounds reasonable to me--the ship is ginormous, after all. But with the other rereleased vehicles like the AT-AT getting price-hiked--not to mention this is a TARGET exclusive, of all places--I don't trust that number at this point. Nevertheless, if it stays at $60 I could see myself getting it.
Title: Re: TSC Imperial Shuttle??
Post by: CHEWIE on May 16, 2006, 02:49 PM
At $60.00 I'd definitely get a second one... it's just too sweet of a ship and that's a great price.

Title: Re: TSC Imperial Shuttle??
Post by: Spectre on May 16, 2006, 09:32 PM
Hasbro will give us a "clean" version of the shuttle to make all of us who bought the "dirty" (almost "filthy" ;) ) version from a few years back buy another one (and to technically give us a "new" vehicle). There are a few differently weathered shuttles visible in the Trilogy and the one we got from the Saga line is the dirtiest of them all, the Emperor's personal shuttle was very clean, so that's what Hasbro will give us this time :)

I'll most likely pass on this one (as I passed on picking up one of the 12 Gunships at TRU this afternoon) as I have the Saga one and am beginning to have space issues so multiples of large vehicles is not a very high priority right now.

As for pack-ins, I bet you it'll be "new" characters to further entice purchases.

My educated guess:

2 "Imperial Shuttle Pilots" made from POTJ/Saga Imperial Officers with a deco similar to the pit crewers visible on the Star Destroyers' bridges (light gray jumpsuit, black gloves and hat). No weapons will be included.

As for all of the naysayers saying that they already have the older versions of this ship (and every other Star Wars toy that is rereleased in some form or another) and Hasbro is wasting retail space for something that we don't already own (often in multiples), just remember that we long time collectors are not the only ones that are interested in Star Wars. For every one of us, there are hundreds of casual buyers and people that entered the hobby only recently that do not already have every toy released and deserve to have the thrill of finding a cool toy at retail :)

$60 doesn't sound too bad, but it also doesn't sound too good. I will have to wait and see. If I can find it at retail I might be inclined to throw down the cash.
Title: Re: TSC Imperial Shuttle??
Post by: Dan on May 17, 2006, 09:10 AM
Good point Spectre, sometimes I forget to think about the casual and new collectors when I judge a product release. A shuttle and AT-AT at retail (and Vader's Tie, and Snowspeeder) does make some people happy, and lets Hasbro off the hook for the mold and tooling costs. Seeing these big ships every 5 years or so, if they are done right and end up being successful, may help justify some new ones further down the line.
None the less, choppers, miniatures at 2.50 each (aka unleashed battle packs) and robot/ship/charcter transformers are stinkers and can go away anytime to make some shelf space for Eopies, dewbacks, banthas, and mini-rig type toys.

I love the my little pony cross-over idea. And the R2 that could turn into a robot would rock. Egads, someone probably has a pony-prototype in production.

$60 sounds about right for Hasbro...  Not for anyone else mind you, just Hasbro.  :)  Things move just fine at $40 or $50+ in other toy lines, it's just Star Wars that seems to have been snake-bitten for whatever reason.

The Shuttle's cool but it's mostly air when you think about it...  Big flat wings and a small hull.  Not a lot to it, so I'm never pleased much by Hasbro prices on vehicles...  Unless this is packed with something special I'm pissed off that I want, then I'll happily pass on it myself.  I dread what pack-ins it has though...  The Sand Crawler's droid repaint really pissed me off at the time, and I wound up lucking out on it by finding someone who only wanted the vehicle to get me the droid...  Not so sure I cna pull that off with a shuttle though.   ::)

I was thinking about trying to get one of these again, and $60 sounds like a deal.

It will probably come with the OTC shuttle pilots as Spectre said, and come out about the same time as Endor wave if they are smart.

10 years ago I bought a vintage MIB one for $175 from the guy who prints Lees AFN.

I reccommend getting one, it is very impressive looking. It is a well designed ship for its day.

Lemme see:

TRU exclusive AT-AT, 2 pack in figures, $80.

Target exclusive Shuttle for $60 with two pack in figures?  Ok, something's missing here.  Why doesn't anyone see it?  When was the last time Hasbro handed you guys a bargain at regular retail?  At Target?  Helloooo?  Lava exclusive figures?  New Tie fighter?  Exploding Grievous?  Any of this ringing a bell?
Title: Re: TSC Imperial Shuttle??

Maybe that $60 price is what each unit is costing Target.

After the $40 TIE Fighter, $13 "premium" figures, and $12 VTSC, I'd be surprised if we brought this thing home for less than $100.

Crap like this makes me furious with Hasbro.  I was a broke ass college kid when the FAO one came out and I had to scrape together $155.00 to get one shippped to me (despite a lack of electronics, pack in figures, etc...).  Why did I do this?  Because they specifically said that it would be limited to 5,000 and only be at FAO.

Now that I've got a job and a salary, the thing is going to come out again, for less than half the price, with figures, at a store near me.

I must say I'm quite pleased with Hasbro being consistently predictable. I didn't buy this years back since it was soooo much $. I had a chance at a mall FAO in Dallas/FW area but I figured Hasbro would rerelease it since ..don't they rerelease most stuff? I hoped I could get it for less. I had know idea this much less(definately pleased with that). Will gladly pick it up this time for the reduced rate ;)

The Negative: Shoot, I missed all those years of play time not having it sooner :-X

********.

I understand your frustration, but I can't be mad when an item is later re-released... they specifically also said when the VOTC figures came out, that none of those would ever be released again in any form, but we're essentially getting the Stormtrooper again (aka the Tatooine Sandtrooper) and 3PO it the upcoming ROTJ set.  Heck I hope all the VOTC figures are repacked again, and cheaper than $10-$12 a pop too.

Also I think you have to take into consideration that the line has a lot of years left, the ROTS line was very popular, etc; which changes things.  I think they've got to space it out with repacks to supplement the new sculpts... if a retailer expresses interest in a large vehicle, then I would think they should jump on it.  Imperial and Clone stuff is the most popular, and the only other large Imperial vehicle they could "repack" would be the AT-AT, which is already slated for TRU.  Of course I'd rather see an all new vehicle like an AT-TE or Turbo Tank, but my dream of that might never happen (unless of course they are in the upcoming TV series and have a big role, so I'll keep being optimistic on it).

Another thing, if I died tomorrow I'd be happy I paid $150 for the Shuttle a few years ago and had it in my collection for as long as I did.  But I do see being frustrated too.

Maybe, but it's really the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season and most retailers then find themselves out of the red and into the black.

Yep.  I thought it was black friday because retailers get into the black not because it was a "bad" day of shopping but rather a good one for the books.

For a company that spent a long time saying ships were tough to sell without a movie, they sure did find a pile of them to release this year.

Saga X wing
Saga mega TIE
Clone wars gunship
Obi jedi starfighter
Anakin jedi starfighter
Grievous wheelbike
Tri fighter
Darth's TIE
Mace's jedi starfighter
Plo Koons fighter on the way
Hailfire droid on the way
Darth's sith starship
AT-AT
Shuttle
Snowspeeder

That's 15, and some of these are big. Am I missing any?

I think the term "Black Friday" was intended to have a double meaning but MikeyD's is the more specific and factual one. :)  As someone who actually had some focus on retailing in his education, I can safely say the other meaning is certainly true as well...  How you look at the term really depends on where your dealings with the retail world on that day lie.  If you're in the accounting office it goes one way, if you're on the sales floor it really means that other thing. ;)

Yeah, but those were not a new release or an exclusive item.  I think that is what Anton means.  Like last year, Target had the LEGO Falcon on sale on Black Friday for $50, but it had been out for a while and wasn't a new release nor an exclusive item.

Every year there is always Black Friday speculation for some unreleased excluisve item.  For example, last year everyone was speculating that the Separation of the Twins would be a Black Friday special.  But, just like last year, it's never turned out that a store started offering their exclusive on Black Friday.

I think that most retailers already know that you will be making a special trip looking for the exclusives, so they use the other stuff, the regular release stuff, to attract you into the store because you are saving money versus another store.  No need to sell the exclusive stuff that day since you have to buy that stuff at their store anyway.

The price (if it's true) is throwing me off.

Why were all of the other vehicles exclusives this year so darn expensive but this one is half what it originally was (plus two pack in figures)?

And why not do an exclusive for Black Friday?  Personally, I don't think it's worth fighting the crowds to save a little $$ on everyday items.

Maybe the retailers have changed their strategies a little to get collectors (and not just gift givers) in their stores on Black Friday?

All I'm saying is that it's plausible - I just don't know how else you can jusify the $59.99 price for an exclusive big box item.

I think the $60 price tag is what it should be in the first place. I think the reason why FAO had it at $125 is because they're FAO and charge a premium for everything.

You're the mole from inside Hasbro, aren't you?  That's why you're so damn proficient with the QNA thread - you have them typed out weeks in advance.

You caught me!

Here's the scoop:  I have a Word document saved in which I've got several different questions already typed out, only with blanks for the specific item that's being asked about.  Like this:

"Hey Hasbro, I sure would like to see more ________.  Especially a _______________.  When will this happen?"

Or this:

"Question: Where's my _______________ figure?  I can't believe you haven't made one yet!"

Or this:

"Any chance of a _______________ any time soon?  My __________________ needs something to ________!  C'mon, Hasbro!"

And then, on Q & A Friday, all I have to do is go through and plug in the variables, like so:

"Hey Hasbro, I sure would like to see more (playsets).  Especially a (Death Star playset).  When will this happen?"

Or this:

"Question: Where's my (Super-articulated Jedi Luke Skywalker) figure?  I can't believe you haven't made one yet!"

Or this:

"Any chance of a (Twin-Pod Cloud Car) any time soon?  My (Cloud Car Pilot) needs something to (pilot)!  C'mon, Hasbro!"

Saves a buttload of time.  And what's great is, it works just as well for the answers, too:

"We've looked at __________, but they just don't seem viable for the marketplace at this time."

Or this:

"Interesting idea!  A _______________________ figure is something we've been wanting to do for a long time.  Check back after ________."

Or this:

"We have no ___________________ planned for ____.  Maybe in ____."

(You guys can print those out and write in your own answers, if you want.  It's fun!)

Jeff and Anton are right.  Every year, people always think there's gonna be some really cool Black Friday deal with Star Wars, be it an exclusive item, or a new wave of figures, or what have you, but that rarely, if ever, pans out.  The only BF deals I ever remember seeing have been things like "25% off all Star Wars toys" or "Buy two figures, get one free," things like that.  Usually at TRU.

It's easy to do sales like that, but a big item like the Shuttle would be a logistical nightmare.  They ship, what, two to a case?  And you'd want to have at least a couple dozen of them for that morning.  And they're huge.  And they're a low-demand item.  People are out that day looking for cheap George Foreman grills, not big-ass vehicles from a 23-year-old movie.

And on the price--Like Anton said, it's not that the Target Shuttle is really cheap, it's that the FAO Shuttle was really expensive.  $60 is much closer to where it should be than $120 or whatever it was.
Title: Re: TSC Imperial Shuttle??
Post by: ruiner on September 14, 2006, 12:19 PM
We all know $120 was too expensive but if you compare a $60 shuttle with the recently released CW gunship at $45 with NO figures, there's something awry.

And this comment (or lack thereof) from Hasbro:

From SWcollector.com: The Target computer system is showing an Imperial Shuttle (DCPI #087-06-0483) coming with a $59.99 price tag. Is this a repack of the old FAO Schwarz exclusive, or is it something from another line?

Hasbro: No comment.

I'm suspicious, that's all.

I've decided for $59 I'm finally going to get this shuttle.  Not giving FAO once cent for this item really made me happy.  Soon after I passed on the item, they went out of business in Boston.  That's what you get for charging $9.99 for a basic figure and the "privelege" of shopping in their much heralded store.

But now at Target, $59 is fair and I'll take it.

This is true.  But when you are comparing a Target exclusive to an FAO price, it makes it all that much easier for me to break down and give Target props.

I still wouldn't pay $12.99 for a 3 3/4" basic figure though  ;)

The lower price that's throwing Ruiner off my be related to the fact that Target is a larger distributer than FAO. I'm sure FAO could only order so many since they have/had less than a third of the number of stores than Target, therefore Hasbro had to charge more to make a real profit.

Title: Re: TSC Imperial Shuttle??
Post by: efranks on September 15, 2006, 11:31 AM
Target also has more stores than TRU.  Target has about 1300 US stores while TRU is down to 587.  According to Hasbro's 2005 numbers they sell 24% of their goods to Wal-Mart and TRU and Target are tied for second at 12% each.

It's possible that, just based on the number of retail outlets, Target can move more of an exclusive than TRU can.  That lowers the price.

The other thing about the AT-AT, for comparison, is that that vehicle still has the sound feature, has more moving parts and comes with 2 figures now as well.  I'd think that the Falcon is a better comparison and that sells for the same or a little less than what the Shuttle will be this time around.

I don't know if this will be a Black Friday item but I found it odd that Hasbro didn't take the opportunity to announce it this week when they started pimping out all the other Target exclusives for this fall.  A Black Friday sale was the only thing I could come up with for it's absence from that list.  If Matt's saying no, then it probably won't be released then.  I just can't explain why Hasbro isn't shouting about it.  Especially when they could use it in a Friday Q&A; "See, we do make vehicles.  Here's a great big ship for $60.  So, quit-yer-bitchin'!"

If Matt's saying no, then it probably won't be released then.

I hope you're joking about that, because I certainly don't know any more about this thing than anybody else does--just making an educated guess based on previous Black Fridays usually being busts when it comes to Star Wars junk.

But I agree that their coyness about it is a bit befuddling.  With the packaged samples showing up, it'd be a great time for a follow-up question to them--maybe they could expand on that "no comment" just a little bit. . .

Oh, I'm fully aware of the store count difference between FAO and Target which of course affects volume.  The volume difference would have to be exponential to reduce the retail price by more than half.

And let us not forget about the two additional pack in figures - at today's rates, that's a $14 value right there!

Good point.

Perhaps, in the end, the MSRP is really arbitrary. I know the At-AT has sound and more moving parts, but, I'm willing to bet that the actual cost different between making an At-At and a Jedi Starfighter is only a dollar or two.
Title: Re: TSC Imperial Shuttle??
Post by: ruiner on September 15, 2006, 01:21 PM
Don't forget, the size of the box has a lot to do with a company's cost.  It's not cheap to ship a container from China to the States - the smaller the box, the better.  That's why so many ships require some form of assembly on the consumers' end.

BTW - retail price IS NOT arbitrary - all retailers have margin requirements that they must meet (depending on their department).

I would bet that the AT-AT (because of size, pack ins, and extra parts) costs Hasbro 4-5X the cost of a standard starfighter.

Title: Re: TSC Imperial Shuttle??
Post by: Darth_Anton on September 15, 2006, 03:35 PM
Of course retailers have a profit margin, I'm not twelve.  :P  ;D

What I meant by arbitrary is that there's a certain point where a standard profit is made and then everything after that is just gravy.  I think a lot of gravy gets made on exclusives. How else can you explain WM charging the same amount as a basic figure for their exclusive twin figures when Target charges 2 and 1/2 times that amount for their exclusives with the same run?

Hasbro's greatest expense in producing anything is in development, after that, getting the product to the shelves is dirt cheep per unit. I'm talking pennies per figure and a few dollars per ship, no matter what the size or amount of parts. So the question becomes this, how is the cost of development paid for? It has to be in one of two ways, A) it either gets added to the cost of the item in question, or, B) it's part of Hasbro's general overhead.

If A, then the cost of re-releasing an At-At or a shuttle should cost FAR less than it's initial run or, if B, the development cost that Hasbro constantly sites as a cause for expense is irrelevant.

Shipping certainly does play a major factor, but it costs the same amount to ship a pallet of At-At's as it does a pallet of Basic figures. Certainly it costs more per At-At to ship, but I wonder how much of an impact this does have on the over all price. Think about it. Ten years ago when we first got the At-At, it was the same price as today, but basic figures have gone up $2. Logically, the At-At price should have gone up as well given the increased fuel costs and the fact that it's an exclusive.

I think we all can agree that something doesn't make sense and that I've put far too much thought into it. :-X

I didn't mean to offend you - I thought about my response after I typed it and realized that I might have come off as "talking down."

But I do have some additional comments on your points:

Quote
How else can you explain WM charging the same amount as a basic figure for their exclusive twin figures when Target charges 2 and 1/2 times that amount for their exclusives with the same run?

Target believes that they attract a different consumer than WM.  Packaging and retailer strategies (margins) have a lot to do with price variances on similar products.  VTSC was the same way.

Quote
Hasbro's greatest expense in producing anything is in development,

Development, including investment (tooling).

Quote
I'm talking pennies per figure and a few dollars per ship, no matter what the size or amount of parts.

Actually, the number (and size of the parts) adds cost(s) to the item.  More parts = more material, more assembly time and more paint operations.  More parts also means more molds, which is the expensive part of the process.  Believe it or not, as China grows, so does the cost of doing business there.  Labor is still cheap, but things are changing.

Quote
Shipping certainly does play a major factor, but it costs the same amount to ship a pallet of At-At's as it does a pallet of Basic figures.

True, but I think it would be easier to "ammortize" the cost of shipping a pallet of 500 figures vs. 75 AT-ATs.

Quote

To help enlighten everyone on manufacturers profit margins vs. what a retailer makes there is a general rule of dividing the retail cost by 4.
If Hasbro wants to retail this for $90 the need to have a Exfactory cost (What is costs hasbro to make) of $23. In turn they would sell the item to TRU for around $55. TRU would need to make at minimum around 40-45% on the item and retail it for $90. There is a little give or take but it will be very close if you divide by 4.

This was the basic formula at Mattel and my current company. (I have over 6years of Toy design under my belt so I can back up what I say). I do not work at Hasbro by the way.

Hope that helps in future threads. ;D

If you divide $90 by 4 you get $22.50, so does that mean if the retailer sells it for $90, their profit should be $22.50?

Because in your example their profit is $45, rendering the formula irrelevant.

Read it again: 4 into 90 is 22.50 that is what it costs Hasbro to manufacture, Hasbro needs to make money on it so they sell it to TRU for $45-$55. TRU buys its for $45-$55 and sells it to you for $90 so they make money. Makes perfect sense. you the consumer are at the bottom of the food chain. TRU is the middleman.
(remember the give and take part so if its of by 5% off dont get your panties in a bunch)

Let me know if you need me to make it clear for you further with apples and oranges.
An Exfactory cost is What is costs Hasbro to make it. Raw materials, molds plastic, package, shipping labor etc.

I see you went back and edited that last $2 (what it costs Hasbro) to $23 after my initial reply.  After you fixed your typo, the formula makes sense.

So Jack, in your experiences with Mattel did rehashes affect the formula at all? $22.50 still seems too high considering this is an old mold.

Not at all $20-23 sounds about right. They are getting killed on frieght and plastic (becuase of oil prices) Old molds help profit margins and occasionly help lower price after the tool/mold is paid off. Any Toy company for its the same in that matter. Once the tool is paid off its like printing money. But also if an item gets marked down say like EP1 stuff Hasbro has to credit the retailer back because it did not sell. There is risk for both retailer and manufacturer so they are not as evil as you think. After all its buisness.

Speaking of old tools, after so much use a tool wears down eventually. so if you look at the POTJ Chewie thats been used over a thousand times some details get lost or sloppy. They made there money back on that one 20 times over. So they should retire it, but alas they get another squeeze with the Marvel line............

Its nice to see the Shuttle for this price, its very fair. There is really not much to it afterall no electronics or sound.

By the way I worked at 2 different offices at Mattel. They transferred me to headquarters in CA (where action figures are done) The marketing guys killed the various lines. Manty of the designers, beleive it or not were on the same page as everyone else. The CA office was full of the biggest pricks that I ever met, its no wonder why the company is going down hill. Its why I left, the NJ ofice was awesome before the ***** closed it. I heard from old co-workers they fired most of the management its an all new crew. They still suck.

Is there any word on when the Target-exclusive Imperial Shuttle will be out on shelves? The product's DPCI# is 087-06-0483 and it's saying its $59.99. (SWC, 9/29/06)

Again, the question was asked in the last QNA session with Hasbro.  Why have all the other retailer exclusives been announced but not this one (officially)?

Yeah, it is interesting how they handle that question too.  They could very easily say "no, its not on the schedule at this time - but a great idea for the future" or some nonsense like that.  To me, the "no comment", as well as the pics/info we've seen over the past couple months tells me that it is indeed coming at some point - but when/where have yet to be officially confirmed.  I for one am hoping that it is on the way, since I didn't get it/couldn't afford it the last time it was offered.

We know the "where," we just don't know the "when" at this point.  Either Target or Hasbro just isn't ready to announce it yet.  I'm sure they'll be on shelves for the all-important Christmas buying season, though.

We should start a pool here, for when they'll show up.  I'm taking the week of November 12.

I'd really prefer the ROTS Imperial Guard packed in, I felt he was be the best one since the Vintage version.  I really don't care for the plastic robes.  Also regardless of version we need full lenght staffs, not these half lenght staffs or guns.

Week of the 19th for me (with an emphasis on the 24th).

That's a surprise.  (http://images.dvdtalk.com/images/smilies/lol.gif)

Now, allow me to clarify this "I'll pay for your Shuttle" thing, if I may:  I'll still hold true to my word on it, but only if it's a hard street date-type situation.  You know, like the past midnight madness events were for the prequel toy launches.  Like if they show up with "DO NOT SELL BEFORE 11/24/06" stickers all over the cases, something like that.  If they show up a few days earlier, with a soft street date, and anyone can go in and buy one, then the deal's off.

I still don't think it'll be a Black Friday item, but I will say that the closer we get, and the more "no comments" we hear outta Hasbro, the more nervous I get. . .  :)

Right, the bet was whether or not it was a Black Friday promo.  If it shows up coinicidentally on 11/24 (with no circular promotion) then you're clear.

Hell, I'm not going to make you buy me a shuttle even if I'm right.

Amazing how they can cut the retail price by more than half and include two figures.  The profit margin for Hasbro must be subpar in today's world of rising costs...and $6.99 figures.

It is a store release only.  But don't go asking anybody"in store" if they have them in stock.....

I'm wondering how they're going to stock this thing if it is indeed a Black Friday Special.  I mean they can fit what, maybe 10-15 at the most on an endcap and this may become a highly sought after item that morning.  Maybe they could cake them all on the top shelf ala the Millenium Falcon TF?  That's probably not a good idea though as the box is too freaking huge.

Beats running around town and/or running DCPI's every other day.

Just sold my SAGA shuttle on ebay in anticipation of this since it's the SAME thing, cost 1/2 the price AND has 2 figures!   Didn't get as much as I'd wanted but I'd already determined I was getting rid of it before news about the Target one came out-  I just waited too long.  Oh well... in the meantime, I have my vintage shuttle to keep me happy!

That's cool - I just don't have time these days to run around looking for figures.  It's a lot easier (and in the long run) cheaper to buy what I want online.

I used to enjoy finding figures on the pegs (it's a lot more exciting than getting a brown box left at the door) but between family, my commute to work and gas prices - things are too hectic.

With that said, even if I wanted a Shuttle, I think I'd resort to ebay and pay the premium price just to avoid the crowds and time it would take to nab one.

Hell, you might be the first in line and still not get one.

In the end, I could give a **** less if it's a BF promo - it'd just be nice to prove Matt wrong for a change!

They pulled the shuttle from Target.com and my local store no longer has it in their system...  Looks like Hasbro's 'no comment' on the BF promo may be because there was never an intention for this to be out by then.  Or maybe even at all?

I'm fed up with Hasbro's evasive answers about this item (see today's Yakface Q&A).  I recommend we all start emailing target directly to get some information.  Maybe someone will run into a customer service rep that does not know to keep 'mum' about it.

In the very least we can flood them with emails about our interest in this item and make sure this happens.

Be sure to include the dcpi # 087-06-0483

I would think we'd be hearing something before too long, if it is in fact happening.  Hasbro does seem to be being quite coy about it, and still hasn't come out and said "no, its not happening", so that leads me to believe we're seeing it at some point.  Hopefully we'll get some announcement and details soon.

I think the whole thing with this Shuttle has gotten completely ridiculous.  I've made endless jokes over the years about Hasbro treating their upcoming releases as if they're state government secrets that could result in the total destruction of the human race should they leak out, but their outright denials of the Shuttle being on the radar is absolutely hilarious at this point.

Asking Hasbro about the Imperial Shuttle at Target is the SW collecting community's Dead Parrot.  "This Shuttle is no more!  It has ceased to be!"  :D

From DarthChuckMC (who works at Target):

Quote
The IMPERIAL SHUTTLE is NOT a MYTH!

It will be featured on an Endcap, starting November 26th . It as NOT a Black Friday item. Stores are supposed to hold them until the 26th for the Endcap, since it will most likely be in the Ad that week (Nov. 26th-Dec. 2nd). There are about 40 Endcaps throughout the stores that will be "Limited Time Only" items. The ONLY toy items are the Imperial Shuttle and a Littlest Pet Shop Collectors Tin. There will be alot of other LTO items, but only those 2 toys. So far there isn't a "STREET DATE", preventing them from being sold early, but there is a "Set Date", that way the items are still in stores for the week of the Ad. MOST stores will probably stick to the Set Date, but have no fear, there are around 40,000 of these being shipped out, and If every store were to get equal amounts, that puts about 30+ per store.

I guess my theory on this item being a Black Friday special can be flushed down the toilet.

I was close!   :P

I'll third the crowded SW shelves sentiment. Hopefully Black Friday clears all that stuff out. I know I'll be getting one of the Han/Chewie TF sets, and I don't think I have to worry about what time I get there, since my local store has TONS.

I went there tonight hoping they'd start trickling out, but my Target seems to be one of those sticklers when it comes to street dates. I'd be surprised if they're on shelves here before next Tuesday.

I managed to score on the shuttles by using the DCPI and finding an employee who wasn't as uptight about grabbing stuff from the back.  There is a sticker on the case itself that reads (Limited time only/Street date: 6:00 pm on saturday, November 25th).  This is the case in my area.  Just remember to be courteous ;).

I went over to Target on Sunday morning hoping to find the shuttle, and they had an endcap set up as well.  I think there were 6-8 on the endcap maybe, and then a handful more up on top of the aisle next to it.  Personally, I was pretty happy to be able to pick up one of the OT ships I'm still missing - and for $60.  Sure, its a fair amount of money, but with the size of the box I was lugging out of the store, I didn't feel like it was a bad deal really - especially when it was over $100 before without any pack in figures.  It will be interesting to see how this sells.  Like I said to the Mrs., could you imagine a little boy having this ginormous boxed wrapped up for him under the tree?  Sure, maybe not the most excited/action-packed ship of the Saga, but still pretty cool.

Ah, it's not that bad Jesse, it doesn't weigh that much.  Maybe 20-30 more bucks at worst - it's still going to be in your collection for a lot less than most people paid for the previous version.

I bought one today.  I didn't find any figures I wanted for a few runs so I figured I may as well get one at the nifty 59.99 price.  Especially since I passed the previous times when FAO Schwartz raped the rest of you.  I'll either keep this shuttle or give it as a Christmas gift.  This is my first shuttle if I keep it, including my vintage days, for some reason my parents missed that one when I was 6 years old (which was rare for them to miss a SW item).

I was thinking when I bought it though that it'd be nice if that were an endcap full of Fambaas with the special gungan warrior pack-in.  I'd have bought 2 or 3 if that were the case, as I only got 1 when it was the FAO exclusive.

How do these seem to be selling in your area(s)?  It sounds as if this is a "when they're gone, they're gone" type of thing, and I've heard reports that when a few stores have sold out, the price tags and endcaps are taken down as well.  At our local store, I counted 16 total Shuttles between the endcap and stocked above the aisles last week, and when we were back over the weekend it looked as if 2 or 3 more (in addition to the one I bought) had sold so far.  It does seem like a pretty decent deal for a large ship and a couple of figures, and it will be interesting to see how they sell.  How are things looking in your area?

Four of the six Targets in my area (MN) have never stocked them or they sold out by the weekend they came out.  The other two stores just have end caps set up and there's been 6-8 on every visit.

Anybody have any luck on finding one in a minty box?  I settled for one with a slightly dented corner.  All the one's I've come across are less than perfect.

Ships, in general, are flying off the shelves in our area.  The figures do so-so, but the ships are in demand.

As far as I know, the Shuttle lasted only a few days before they sold out.

TRU is the same story.  We are completely sold out of the AT-AT's & X-Wing's and there are only two each of the Gunship and TIE's left.

I've seen a similar story with the ships here, even the "starfighter" assortment.  Our TRU is sold out of the X-Wings, Gunships, and AT-ATs - and they were down to one TIE Fighter last time I was there.  They only have one Grievous Wheelbike from the starfighter assortment as well.  Ships do seem to be bigger this year.

Yeah and I've been kicking myself for skipping items that I want later down the road.  I saw Mace Windu's fighter once, passed and now wish I would've picked it up.  Same holds true for the Dagobah X-Wing and Kit Fisto fighter.

The moral of the story is if you like something, you better pick it up when you see it because odds are you won't see it again.

SW stuff doesn't even make it to clearance around here, and if it does, you only have one day to score it.  After that, it's gone.

That's the same story here.  I've been burned in the past with waiting for something later, so - for the most part - if I see something I want to pick up I usually get it when I see it, unless the funds aren't there.  Things go awfully fast when they hit clearance here as well, and our Target isn't close enough that I necessarily visit it more than once or twice a week, so I usually miss out unless there are tons on hand.

The buying patterns have indeed been kind of weird on this Imperial Shuttle.  It sat for the first week or so, but after word got out it's started to sell pretty well.  But then I wonder if the package variant collectors might be buying them all up in order to get the figures in the different positions in the window.

I could care less on the position of the figures, especially with a $60 item.  I gave up on "special packaging" issues after trying to match up TSC figs with the appropriate holo.

I wonder how many of these we're going to see returned after the holiday? I've seen a lot on e-bay, some selling them in lots of 10. ??? I can't believe all of these would sell.

I am in ifetts neck of the woods, and it is strange. Some stores sold out instantly, others have an end cap that looks untouched since they came out. Snowspeeders too- One store here has DOZENS of them on clearance ($21.00), and I don't see any at the other 4-5 stores I tend to hit.

Clearance already!  :P

Overall, ehat does everyone think of the shuttle promotion? I personaly think it was great because it didn't seem hard to get and it seems like everyone who wanted one got one. It also seem to have sold well, so I would think that could lead to other such offerings.

Our local store was down to 2 Shuttles this weekend, and they were stocked in the "regular" Star Wars section now, with no special endcap display anymore.  Maybe there are more in back, and they will replenish on the shelf (since there is only room for two), but either way, there's just two out there right now.  They've been slowly selling after I originally saw 16 of them a couple weeks ago.  I wonder if they'll hit clearance, it seemed like a pretty good deal already for what you get - but with Targets quick clearancing, I'm sure some will find these for $30 or less if they're lucky.

My Target still had two last night and I talked to someone in toys and they said that they just got more in their truck yesterday...  I'm really hoping that these hit the clearance bin in the near future.

Gone!  Every Target in the county is now sold out of these.  Thankfully another forum member bought an extra one for me when they first came out, so I'll still be able to get this.  Doesn't look like I'll be saving money and getting this on clearance like I had hoped.  Oh well, at least I ended up with one.

Good luck to the rest of you holding out hope that these will hit the clearance rack.

Man, that stinks. I have NEVER seen one of these on the shelves. And I go to 2 different Targets on a regular basis (at least once a week)...

There were at least 4 at my Target that are now gone.  I have the FAO one, so no big loss to me.  Actually, I'm thrilled vehicles are selling so well this season.  What my store never had, though, were any Snowspeeders.

I'm putting an urgent call out to my fellow JD'ers.  My wife had been trying to find a Star Wars vehicle for me for Christmas, but had no luck.  Has anyone still seen any of the Shuttles on their local Target shelves?  I'll gladly cover the costs!  (I'll post a want ad in the Classifieds, so feel free to PM me).

I have not seen these things in weeks.  It looks like they sold well, especially at that price.

I'm really glad to see that the Shuttle sold so well.  I think it bodes well for any fan of the vehicle line and the large vehicles that we've been asking for on the various message boards.  And with Darryl DePriest mentioning on the Forcecast that the AT-TE is something that Hasbro has seriously looked at doing along with mention of the Clone Turbo Tank in the Q&A sessions, I think that vehicle fans can be genuinely optimistic about vehicles.

Good point Nicklab- it sends a good message to the big H. Particularly if they time it around the holidays.

These things were oddly distributed at my local stores. A few had a bunch for a while, then zing, they were all gone.

What did this thing do in the vintage days with its "new fangled" electronics.  Never owned one as a kid, though I do have a vintage one with non-working electronics.  I know there's no lights, so was it the wings that folded up and down??

Actually, it was just a loud annoying electronic squealing sound. I guess it was the guns, it sure didn't sound like engines. Not even a little light  :-\

I've heard several stories of piles of $10 vintage shuttles back in the day. :P
