Title: Wookiee Army
Post by: CHEWIE on August 23, 2004, 12:12 PM
So who is planning on creating a grand Wookie army with EP3 figures?  Anyone planning on getting several of the Yarua (senator) figure for an early start?

I hope to pick up several wookiees.  I usually don't have huge armies, but like to build little ones.  Plus, I really enjoy Chewbacca, and wookiees in general, and I'm glad we're seeing more of them (in action) in the next movie.  I hope they make several, and I'll be happy to buy them :).

I don't know if my Wookiee army would rival my Stormtrooper, Clone Trooper or Battle Droid armies, but I'm definitely interested in the prospect.    I would just be concerned that they would only make 1 generic Wookiee warrior, a Chewbacca and a Tarfful in the basic figure line.  I think we might see another Wookiee or two in the vehicle and beast pack lines, though.  It certainly makes the ranks seem a little thin.  Right now, we've got 3 individual Wookiees in the line:

Chewbacca (who knows how many versions)
Rorworr
Yarua

So another individual plus an army builder or two would definitely be nice.

I'll certainly be all for as many Wookiees as they can make. We're off to a good start with Tarfull.

I'd even roll with some generic repaints. If they can crank out a couple army builder versions with interchangeable armor parts (an actual play feature that can work with these guys) then vary the armor plastic color, they could get a lot of mileage out of a few good generic sculpts.

I think there's a little hidden Wookiee fanbase that will go full-steam when ROTS hits. I have a friend who isn't into the figure line, but is all about anything Wookiee. He was trying to get several of us to help make a Wookiee swoop gang in Galaxies a while back. He'll dive into toys if they do these guys right.

I'm very excited about the prospect of Wookie army-building, and am glad to see that I'm not the only one!

A Wookie warrior 3-pk similar to the Clone Wars army packs would be a nice addition too!

Much like i've mentioned with Teebo, I think Hasbro should do this...

Make one definitive "generic" wookie sculpt.  Neutral pose, good (or preferably GREAT articulation, like VOTC Chewie), and then release him like that in a deco....  Any generic basic deco.

Later release an army builder of 4 figures, the same exact sculpt, all unique fur colors/patterns.  Like a black with grey-ish stripes, tan, brown, and maybe older looking brown-grey.

Pack in a variety of weapons...  Voila.  Army Building Wookie goodness that, unless E3 blows chunks, would suck the $ right out of the collector's wallets.

Completists will want all 4 variants plus the carded.  Army builders will want massive armies of all 5 figures, and extras to paint, and what kid isn't gonna want wookie troops?

Seems logical to me.  :)

Oh yeah, I'll be putting together a wookiee posse.

I definitely want to see some sweet army builders this time around. I hope Hasbro gives the SA clone with a new head and ships the hell out of it. I want to be literally swimming in SA clones, not crappy red striped ones with half-assed tripod cannons. I want decent droids with a more rigid plastic, and any other army builder that shows up on film.

Hmmm, Snoova with the Vanilla Ice do.

Sadly, i'd probably take a NEW Snoova if it was to-scale and incorporated some of the more modern features, like "separate" armor pieces (maybe removable), a nicely detailed/painted ax, maybe some soft goods...

I cnsider her more a basic line figure, but I agree she needs redone definitely.  Softgoods cape, good or great articulation, an actually separate thermal detonator (Whoever said "hey, let's sculpt it in the hand" needs smacked), and that'd basically make me happy.

Of course, the chain (removable) for your VOTC Chewbacca would rock as well.  :)  And her rifle, but that goes without saying.

Hahah! That's hysterical, my girlfriend did too. I still have it to this day out of guilt, just sitting in my old extras box. I remember feeling like both a complete tool for her realizing I'd like that sort of thing as a gift and a bigger tool for just smiling and saying thanks. I felt very small.

Anyway, I was at looking at all those Kashyyk concept shots (and all the Planet of the Apes book rip-off vehicles) and got to thinking that we could get not only a Wook army, but plenty of vehicles to go along. It could be high time post ROTS that we see the Clone Wars line return. More clones, more Wookies, more coolness.

Alright, thinking about this a little more, and perhaps we could see these:

BASIC FIGURES
Chewbacca
Tarfful
Wookiee Warrior (with rifle)
Wookiee Guard (with staff)
Wookiee Elder (this is a stretch)
Wookiee youth

SMALL VEHICLES
Wookiee 'Copter with pilot

MEDIUM VEHICLES
Wookiee Catamaran with pilot

Man, I can't believe you guys are rlpping on Snoova.  You will all change your tone when you realize that the secret EU character in EP3 is indeed going to be the badass himself...SNOOVA!!!  We will all soon learn what Snoova was up to before his bounty hunting ways.

Rumor has it that he helps lead the wookies into battle at Kashyyyk against the Seperatist army.  All the world will know of Snoova when he jumps out and yells (in his Wookie speak of course) SNOOVA-DOOVA-DO and swings his battle axe weapon at the poor battle droids heads.  Lopping them off with ease.  This wookie need not rip droids arms out their sockets.  Oh no sir.  With a mighty hell of SNOOVA-DOOVA-DO and a swing of the battle axe you will KNOW.  Oh yes, we will all know the great power that is SNOOVA!

Snoova is not just a great warrior but he's also one heck of a legislative brain on Kashyyyk.  It turns out that Snoova was actually elected by his wookie peers to represent them in the senate as a write-in canidate one election year.  He instead turned it down and endorsed his good pal Yarua.  The wookies agreed Yarua would be a fine representative and received him with open hairy arms.  But once again it was Snoova that was in the center of it all.

Snoova, he really can doova-do it all.   This has been another "Great moments in Wookie history."

I'm wanting quite a few...  I'm just curious if this is "wookie average" and Chewbacca's really just a small guy for his race, or a younger Wookie perhaps?

If this is average, I'm jonesin' for quite a few of these...  If Chewie's average than I'm disappointed somewhat to get "the fat guy", ya know?  But I dunno...  He's cool, either way, just maybe not to the point I want tons...  5 though, I'd say, at least.

Check out the Making of Episode III Web Documentary, The Wookiees Are Back.  In it, animation director Rob Coleman tells some of the Wookiee actors that they are the senior warriors of the pack, while Chewbacca is one of the youngsters.  This might explain why many of the Wookiees are considerably larger than Chewbacca.

I can buy that...  Especially if Wookie Age, which Lucas was pretty in on himself, is quite a long time, though Chewie's sporting a lotta grey come ROTJ, and even in ANH.

Either way, this guy's huge.  I just got the set this evening and he's easily the best figure so far.

Snoova may be one of the worst figures ever made in my opinion... but I have one too.   ;)

To my understanding, Snoova was a bouny hunter Wookiee that Chewbacca impersonated in SOTE while Leia donned the Bousch disguise, in an attempt to infiltrate the Black Sun organization as they tried to rescue Han before he was delivered by Boba Fett to Jabba's Palace.

Title: Would you like that "wookie-sized"?
Post by: Morgbug on March 29, 2005, 04:30 PM
So after much complaining on my part, I thought maybe I should get some wookies together and take a pic, to see if indeed there is much of a size discrepancy with the new figures?  Well, the photo below (I'm working on getting better, but seem to be getting worse) shows what's up:

From left to right are:
Chewbacca Mechanic POTJ
Chewbacca VOTC
Chewbacca Mynock Hunt
Chewbacca POTF2 - freeze frame
Chewbacca ROTS
Wookie Warrior - ROTS preview
Chewbacca - vintage (yeah, I need a new one for sure)
Yarua - post-OTC

So originally it looks like Hasbro had Chewie pretty much in line with the vintage, in terms of size.  That's a bit ironic anyway, given the early POTF2 stuff was huge.  I haven't actually opened my original orange carded Chewie, so couldn't do that comparison, but I'd bet he was bigger than the POTF2-FF version.

Mechanic Chewie, Mynock Chewie and VOTC Chewie are pretty consistent, both in terms of height and bulk.  The ROTS figure isn't that much taller than its recent predecessors but it is considerably more bulky, IMO.  Basically it's like he put on about 25% more body weight in the evolution process, or perhaps he goes on a major diet post-prequel.

Yarua is just plain huge, a complete monster and the Warrior is that much bigger again :o

In general then my initial feeling upon opening these is that Hasbro did indeed throw the scale out the window in an attempt to make these things bigger.  Big boo on that one then, it is really disappointing to me.  I suppose it remains to be seen what the scale is in the movie, but I was more concerned with the scale from a figure standpoint :-\

I was surprised to see the highlights to Chewie's fur started in the VOTC version and to me aren't that different in the ROTS version.  Definitely lighter, but they were largely present in a previous version.  The other Chewies are pretty consistently dark, so another lack of attention to detail knock I suppose.  I imagine the brain trust thinks they're getting more accurate, but that's a wee bit open to discussion.

BTW, not sure if this belongs here or not.

You need to get Rorrworr and Tarfful into that pic for comparisons sake, Brent.  Tarfful is pretty big in his own right.  Just about as big as the Preview Wookiee, in fact.

Don't have Tarfful yet :-\  Soon.  I do have Rorrworr though.  I'll update when I get the new fig.

I was looking at Rorrworr earlier though and he's pretty darn small, smaller than the POTF2 Chewie I think.  Gonna look like a little baby compared to the Warrior.

Well Rorworr is a young Wookiee after all. Whilst the warrior is an adult in his physical prime.
Title: Re: Would you like that "wookie-sized"?
Post by: CorranHorn on March 29, 2005, 10:03 PM
Rowrorr is just the POTF FF Chewie with a new head, so they'll be about the same size. When Hasbro did the POTJ Chewie Mechanic they were getting closer and closer to the proper scale for Chewbacca. The Saga Bespin and VOTC Chewies are the perfect scale when compared to Han or Luke. The ROTS is pretty much the same there. Tarful and the Wookiee Warrior though are almost a head taller than Chewie, so Chewbacca in the end may be small for a Wookiee. :) But overall we're now getting the scale the way we should, so I would have to say kudos to Hasbro.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to that next Wookiee Warrior as well, and I'm glad it is considerably different than the preview version.  The more wookiees, the better :).  I don't have room for a real large army, but I sure do like how they look displayed together.  Right now I have 4 Preview Wookiees, Tarfful and Chewie...waiting to increase their ranks with more of that 2nd Warrior, once it is released.

I picked up loose POTF2 Chewie and SOTE Snoova (sans accessories) at CIII.

Man they are puny next to my other Wookiees. And they're absolute dwarves compared to the Sneak Preview -- a head shorter and 50% of the mass.

Granted the POTF2 and SOTE ones are way small compared to the human figures of their day.

I opened my #43 Wookiee Warrior last night.

He is a little hard to stand because of the action feature, but a stand fixed that problem.  I've got him posed with his wookiee blaster and shield, and he looks great standing next to Tarfful, chewie and the Preview Wook.

I kinda wish now that I had grabbed an extra Preview Wookiee so that I could mix and match the accessories between the Preview Wook and the #43 Wookie.

Also, the #43 Wookiee is much less yellow in person.  I was able to grab one that was more of a "tan/brown" paint job, but be fore-warned that there are some crappy paint jopbs out there on this #43 Wookiee!

Do you need some random Wookiee accessories Jeff?  Send me a PM if you like, I might be able to help you out.

Picked up the darker "chocolate" wookiee today, thought I'd post a nice comparison shot...

I like both, the color change is a nice touch to making the Wook army just a tad bigger!   :)

Thanks for that pic Jeff.  Scott mentioned he'd found me both, but I had no idea what he was talking about :P

Thanks for that pic Jeff, I'm glad to see this variation actually.  It makes these wookiees look fairly different, and varies the "army" up a little bit.  The more wookiees the better, hopefully everyone can find both versions if they want them.

Hmmm.... I need about 10 of #43... several will be repainted...

Question - is his bandolier/vest thing removable?

Eeee, yikes...   :-\

I picked a couple Wookiee's up the other night at Target and Wal-Mart...  Got cream and brown variants in the same night, and honestly I'm not impressed.

He could be worse, but his goofy legs are just like Tarful's...  Not to mention they're pre-posed and it makes standing the figure tough (damn "walking" sculpt to them).  I much prefer the preview Wookiee, and I think Hasbro didn't do this figure justice like that one.  Color me unimpressed.

Not to mention that my cream wookiee's arms keep falling off.  I'm really not pleased with these figures.

I hope the film makes some mention why some Wookiees are absolutely HUGE while others are tiny by comparison as well...  This species is all over the place in toy form, and I'm hoping this is not just a Hasbro flub and that they're all comparable in the movie.

Got one today at a collector show for $8.00.  Well, it's not as good as I hoped either.  I do like the removable vest/bandolier thing, but the Preview version is so much better!

I will still get 3-4 more of them probably, but repainting them is a must.

These have been flooding my Target lately, the odd thing is, it seems to be the pegwarmer of the wave.  I've already got 10, all the tan color, just to add variety to the 50 preview wookiees I've got.  I'll probably get 10 more of the dark variant.  The preview wookiee is by far the better version, even though the new wookiee is good, the sneak preview wookiee is arguably the best star wars figure ever made.  Although the new wookiee is huge, the preview wookiee is colossal.  I wouldn't have minded if the new one was as big as the preview wookiee.  Overall though, I'm glad we have more wookiees.

I opened both color variants this weekend, and while I'm not completely disappointed, I'm not thrilled. I certainly won't be doing any sort of army building with them.

Looking back, I feel as though the Sneak Preview Wookiee did nothing but set us up for disappointment with the regular ROTS line Wooks. None have come remotely close to it. Not in paint aps, not in articulation, not in the variety of accessories, nothin'.

I think the #43 Warrior (specifically the darker variant) is a better figure than Tarrful, but not by much. Both really come up short, and I'm hoping we see resculpts in Collection 2 later on that come closer to the standards that the SP Wookiee set.

My wookies came with the pre cut army.  If you just look at it the wrong way its arms fall off at what Hasbro calls an elbow.  I guess Grevious got to them.

And they have officially become a peg warmer!

More at Target than walmart.  I think I saw about a dozen light fur ones last night.  I already have 4 of those, I want the dark ones.

Since Sunday I've seen them in plentiful amounts at both Walmart and Target, and then even a few at Kmart.

Walmart seemed to be the place to find the darker brown Wookiee. Of all the Targets I came across that had the figure, only one location had that variantion; the rest had only tan versions.

They're warming the pegs, that's for sure. They need to make these Collection 2, increase the articulation, and improve the paint details. The current figures just aren't flexible or of acceptable display quality to army build.

These are actually pegwarming?  That surprises me, especially for a wave that came out such a short time ago (wasn't it only about 2 weeks ago when they were first spotted?) and that one of its casepack brethren is a former pegwarmer, nay pegsmotherer, itself (the Droideka).

The WM I was at earlier today had restocked with one case of that wave and the Wookiee was the only one they had more than one of (two tans), but I think that had more to do with Hasbro's ass-backwards case pack ratios (see another thread for my "sky is falling" rant on that) than anything else, since I was the first person to see the figures there since they restocked.

The local Target has apparently restocked that wave about 3 times now, and every time I go in there, I see the Wookiees (again, the tan version) as the "signal" that I had just missed the Clone.  However, every time I've seen the Wookiee there and left it, when I'm back the next day, it's already gone.

Tarfful's and Chewbacca's precedent setting as "WOOKIEE = PEGWARMER" might be spelling doom for the Wookiee Warriors (I still find the SP Wookiee, my favorite of the bunch, mixed in amongst figures at WM), but I honestly think/suspect that, if kids actually do get into this line once the movie is out, the Wookiees will start to disappear a little quicker.

Of all the characters on the pegs (that are at least familiar as far as species/race is concerned), I think the Wookiees will most benefit from their appearance in ROTS finally being shown to the public.  If that clip on TRL last Friday (God help me I watched TRL and my head still hurts) was any indication, the Kashyyyk battle is going to be very cool.

Oh, and strangely enough, my brown Wookiee doesn't have any problem with his arm falling off, but the tan Wookiee, as Gatillo said, is apparently seeing Dr. Nick Riviera for his surgical reattachments.  :)

Really?  This makes me think that this may not be a running change then.  It's entirely possible that these were manufactured in different factories, or they were seperate manufacturing runs.  The paintjob Anakin #2 with Dooku saber is markedly different from the original issue.

The parts issue is the main issue that makes me think they were seperate production runs.  But only Hasbro knows.  Oh well.

that's the only redeeming quality to those garbage wookiee's..
I got the tan and brown variants..
opened up the brown one.. the tan one I didn't like as much.
I don't understand why we can get such awesome figures out of hasbro liek some of the clones and jedi.. but this wookie is a plastic poop...

I have an extra tan one if anyone is interested..
I may just return it, but i offer it to you guys first.

I've seen more dark brown than tan, and all at Target.  He's not as good as the SP one, but I like him a lot.  Plus he's got the best accessories of just about any ROTS figure.

The accessories rock on that wookie.  What sucks is his stance and "articulation", plus he is smaller than the SP one.

Was it too hard Hasbro to give the accessories tothe preview wookie? >:(

That's putting it nicely, Jesse.

These wookiees are ****-sandwich. I've seen McDonalds toys that were better quality. I didn't want to complain too much when I opened them, because my fiance picked them up for me. But damn, these are some awful figures. The action feature thing really needs to go away again...and never come back. Seriously. And this wookiee should go with it.

To be honest, as excited as I was about this figure initially, I was a little disappointed as well.  I mean, I'm happy to have some more wookiees for the army...and they "look" good, but the articulation/stance is what bothers me the most.  I don't see why we got that nice knee articulation in the preview wookiee, but then Hasbro uses this "tease" knee articulation with Chewie, Tarfful, and now these other Wookiee Warriors.  They look like they would be ball jointed, but end up just being able to spin around, which is basically worthless.  I'm glad to have some more wookiees, but I am disappointed with the figures a little bit overall.

They sorta remind me of that Boss Nass figure from POTJ.  It was like a door stopper ;D.  It looks good but once you grab it, oh boy, you want to trash it.

This figure is a pretty easy find now... I wouldn't say it's a turd, but it could be a lot better.  If it wasn't for the Preview Wookiee, we probably wouldn't judge it so hard.

StarWars.com Databank update on Kashyyyk (http://www.starwars.com/databank/updates/news20050527.html)--nifty **** for those of us who're into that.

Back on topic ... Tarfful and Chewie aren't serious pegwarmers at the stores I frequent, in fact I daresay Chewie is relatively sparse.
