Title: 2024 HasLab - TVC Project, Coming Soon!
Post by: Jeff on March 20, 2024, 12:11 PM
Revealed on today's Hasbro Star Wars Imperial March Fanstream (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIWv7tp9UGE):

The next Star Wars HasLab project will be revealed the week of May 4th... and it's from The Vintage Collection!

Let the speculation begin...

(Patience, Black Series 6" fans - maybe you'll get another turn someday  :-\)

Nicklab and Jayson have been playing a game of cat-and-mouse about what it will be somewhere else. Not a lot of compelling options on the list to my eye ( as a mostly OT fan)

I highly doubt you'll see a Black Series Haslab ever again.  They're 0 for 2 and TVC is 3 for 3.

Hoping for a proper Cantina that includes a few new aliens… I’m just about tapped out when it comes to space for enormous vehicles and the Ghost hasn’t even shipped yet.

The Cantina is about the last big thing I’ll buy…except maybe the Yavin tactical display table or the once planned Echo Base playset

Here’s the list in question.  Jayson has not given me any indication which of these choices might be the next TVC Haslab.

EPISODE I - BMF Naboo Royal Starship

EPISODE II - LAAT/C Republic Gunship Carrier

CLONE WARS - The Twilight

EPISODE III - BMF Turbo Tank

THE BAD BATCH - The Havoc Marauder

SOLO - Lando's Millennium Falcon

OBI-WAN KENOBI - Inquisitor Shuttle

ANDOR - Luthen Rael's Fondor Haulcraft

ROGUE ONE - BMF U-Wing

EPISODE IV - Mos Eisley Cantina

EPISODE V - Rebel GR-75 Medium Transport

EPISODE VI - Imperial Lambda Class Shuttle

THE MANDALORIAN - Mandalorian Gauntlet Assault Craft or the Imperial Landing Craft

THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT - Boba Fett's Rancor

AHSOKA - Ahsoka's T-6 Jedi Shuttle.

EPISODE VII - First Order Troop Carrier

My favorite in the list is:

EPISODE V - Rebel GR-75 Medium Transport

Yeah the GR-75 or Cantina are probably the only two in that list I’d be terribly interested in.  Ther are a few other okay ones I guess, but nothing else too exciting to me.
Title: Re: 2024 HasLab - TVC Project, Coming Soon!
Post by: Dave on March 22, 2024, 09:54 AM
To be honest there is a bunch of stuff I'd like them to make, including the rebel transport, but I don't want it to be a $450 version.  A $150-$200 version would be just fine for the rebel transport, a Ahsoka's T-6, First Order troop carrier, Fondor Haulcraft, etc.

I thought the Mandalorian N-1 was perfect.  Something mid-sized where reasonable compromises are made to keep it affordable.

In fact I'm not sure there is anything on this list that feels like I would want to spend $450 for and have it take up a giant shelf.  Even if they did the cantina I would hope they could find a way to create value without making it too expensive and elaborate (e.g. I don't need piles of Instagram worthy pillows, etc.).

I have seen that elsewhere Jayson confirmed it is NOT the Havoc Marauder, and also said that whatever it is, it is not "a representation" of the vehicle/location like the playsets have been, which would seemingly nix the Cantina unless they are doing a full interior/exterior for it.
Title: Re: 2024 HasLab - TVC Project, Coming Soon!
Post by: Nicklab on March 22, 2024, 04:35 PM
I saw the "not a representation" remarks, too.  And for me?  That seemed to rule out a Death Star playset.  I think it might also rule out the GR-75 Rebel Transport, too.

I'm glad to see that Hasbro seems to want to build on the success of previous Haslab campaigns.  I think the big dividing line might be between old media and new media.  Is there anything in the legacy media (pre-sale to Disney) that might be a home run idea?

GEORGE LUCAS ERA

EPISODE I - BMF Naboo Royal Starship - Previously made in 1999

EPISODE II - LAAT/C Republic Gunship Carrier - Never made before - would need an accompanying AT-TE to be a home run

CLONE WARS - The Twilight - Never made before.  Appears in 10* episodes of The Clone Wars

EPISODE III - BMF Turbo Tank - Previously made in 2009

EPISODE IV - Mos Eisley Cantina - A representation - not likely at this time

EPISODE V - Rebel GR-75 Medium Transport - Made in the Kenner era, 1980

EPISODE VI - Imperial Lambda Class Shuttle - Originally made in 1983/84; Reissued in the modern era in 2002/03 and 2006 based on the Kenner tooling

DISNEY ERA

THE BAD BATCH - The Havoc Marauder - Never made before - Eliminated from contention per J

SOLO - Lando's Millennium Falcon - Made in the SOLO line in 2019 in a simplified form

OBI-WAN KENOBI - Inquisitor Shuttle -  Never made before

ANDOR - Luthen Rael's Fondor Haulcraft -  Never made before

ROGUE ONE - BMF U-Wing - Made as a one man fighter in 2016's Rogue One line

THE MANDALORIAN - Mandalorian Gauntlet Assault Craft - Never made before  /  Imperial Landing Craft - Never made before

THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT - Boba Fett's Rancor - Previous Rancors have been made before, not this specific one.  Would Hasbro attempt another Rancor Haslab after the failure of the Black Series Rancor Haslab campaign?

AHSOKA - Ahsoka's T-6 Jedi Shuttle - Never made before in 1:18 scale.  Seen in Tales of the Jedi, Clone Wars and Ahsoka.  Could it also be seen in The Acolyte?

EPISODE VII - First Order Troop Carrier - Never made before

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know what to make of it all.  And there are a lot of factors that work for and against a number of these.

Same.  I don't need everything to be enormous.  I wish they'd use Haslab for more esoteric or risky items even if they're regular sized things.

Hasbro has tossed around the term "Dream Item" regarding Haslab.  And one concept people have been discussing are figure dream packs.  I don't think it's a far-fetched idea given the limited scope of the figure line these days.

A Haslab figure dream pack of 10 Cantina aliens for $200 - $250 might be an idea worth pursuing.  Especially if Hasbro were to make a not-quite-a-Haslab Cantina playset.  The only complicating factor that I could see would be the incentives.  I think an Early Bird backer offering might be a better way to sweeten the deal.  I know that Hasbro did that with the GI Joe Classified HISS Tank.

Yep.  They've worn me down.

I'm at the point where I'd rather pay more for NEW characters instead of $16.99 for repacks and repaints and photo-real deco re-releases.  Dream Item doesn't have to mean enormous.  Make a Vader funeral pyre.  A ROTS Sith Throne... a ten pack of cantina aliens or Jabba's palace goons.  A Home Won command center... anything that's not the same stuff over and over again.

Have we heard any commentary on how the Mandalorian N1 fighter did in Hasbro’s view?  I know it wasn’t a Haslab item, but there was a strong element of preorder for this.  Did it even get “stocked” at EE or any other place?

As mentioned before, I’d love to see Hasbro do more stuff like this.  Reasonable price range, pre-order, awesome execution.

I would be up for a significant figure component to a HasLab item if the ship/playset was more mid-size.  For example, I’m not super interested in a First Order Troop carrier, but I would be if it included all the Knights of Ren.

Last summer during interviews, the Hasbro team was very happy with how the N-1 had sold, and said it was going to have the effect of more fighter-sized vehicles being offered. I think the E-Wing was an obvious result.

I saw the N-1 on shelf at Target, Go! Calendars and Toys, and a local toy store called Sir Troy's Toy Kingdom ( that is an all-out toy store my boys and I absolutely love that is trying and mostly succeeding at filling the hole TRU left.)

The N-1 is still available on Amazon as well, and hovers around regular price. If it dips far enough it might finally push me over the edge to actually buying it, but I am not much of a vehicle collector ( no Haslab purchases yet, the BMF is enough of a space hog for me.)

Dang I would have like the Marauder but I guess that was a long shot seeing as how they’ve only got Hunter to go with it so far.

The Twilight was #1 on my most wanted list of ships for a long time before the Ghost took over that spot, so I’d be super happy to see this one, although it feels like there is almost no fan push for it.

I’d also love the Jedi T-6 Shuttle. I was checking out the Lego one the other day and it’s a pretty neat design.

Jayson's comment on IG was "Cheers" as a hint, so the money seems to be on the Cantina. I'm super happy with my cantina diorama, but if this has a few figures that won't be available anywhere else (two in particular), I'll still back this and use it as a playset for my son and I to pose figures in. I really hope the Hasbro team is looking at all the negativity between old and new collectors and plays up the cross-media potential for this set. Tonnika sisters and Hammerhead would be awesome for us OT collectors, but Pelli Motto and EV-9D9 could appeal to new media fans (though EV has cross potential for sure). A new Wuher? **** yeah I'd want that. At the least they should be pulling together some glamour shots showing Mando in the thing to reduce the agita from the new media crowd.

No, Hasbro only had an hour for all the lines combined. It was pretty much just 10 minutes for Priya to go through the 4 items shown.

The twilight has always been high on my list. I'm not saying it's a great choice for everyone though.

The dream figure pack is top on my list though if it is cantina patrons I will need a cantina to go with them. If they do a cantina, I'm still on board with my vote to keep it modular. The bar section could likely fit in a 12-14 inch deep shelf, as could either side wall of the building. This would keep it flexible for people who definitely don't have the space for a full table display. You could display the whole thing separately on three shelves if need be.

Well, the Marauder has suffered the same fate as some previous Haslab vehicles... it's a possibility.

When they made The Razor Crest they stated that they'd make every character that ever interacted with it.  By my count they've made a little over half of the characters.

So I guess if they wanted to make The Marauder and there weren't more than a couple other figures not bundled with it available, that shouldn't stop them.

It's a little odd if they are going to ask us to back this upcoming Haslab before we even have the last one in hand.

They've been doing that quite a bit with recent projects - examples:
- GI Joe Classified 6" HISS Tank (Aug 2022) ran before the GI Joe 3.75" Skystriker shipped (Jan 2023)
- GI Joe Classified 6" Dragonfly (Jul 2023) ran before the HISS Tank shipped (Dec 2023)
- Galactus (Aug 2021) ran just about when the Sentinel was being shipped (Sep 2021)
- TFers Deathsaurus (Nov 2022) ran just before the TFers Victory Saber shipped (Dec 2022)

I guess they figure with each of the major brands having 2-3 HasLabs under the belt, folks will be more trusting that things will get delivered.

Per Hasbro Pulse’s post on Instagram, the launch of the new Haslab campaign has been delayed.

I have to think there are too many high profile things on the promotional calendar for the franchise.  I’m thinking this could get launched at SDCC.

Post by: Dave on April 29, 2024, 05:26 PM
This was just going to be the reveal, correct?  Or were they going to start taking orders right away?  Seems odd to delay it if they were just planning a reveal.

Post by: Nicklab on April 30, 2024, 06:37 AM
Generally, the Haslab campaigns have started within 24 hours of the announcement.

SDCC is really the ideal place to launch a campaign.  There’s less on the promotional calendar for the franchise.  And Hasbro gets loads of free promotion because of all of the collector media that’s on hand to cover the announcement and take countless photos.

Excellent execution, Hasbro!  "Hey collectors, get excited for the next TVC Haslab reveal...  uh, actually, nevermind - we'll tell you later." ::)

I'm guessing Nick is probably right that they changed their mind and wanted some kind of reveal in-person to fans at something like SDCC.  That makes me think that whatever they picked, it is more impressive to see it in person and get a true sense of scope as opposed to just being able to rely on pics/fanstreams.  (Mos Eisley Cantina playset?)

Or I guess it could be as simple as someone dropped the fragile 3D model and they need to print a new one. :P

A modular Death Star would be sweet.  I would be interested in both a cantina and Death Star, assuming its done well and not just bottles, pillows, etc. for $450.

That'd be cool.  $450 HasLab Death Star and $255 pre-order cantina.
Title: Re: 2024 HasLab - TVC Project, Coming Soon!
Post by: Jeff on May 1, 2024, 02:41 PM
Based on all the comments I've seen and read over the last few years, the Death Star and/or the ME Cantina are going to be really interesting choices for potential HasLabs.  Probably way more controversial than anyone is expecting for two OT popular locations.

There are so many personal visions of what a Death Star playset should look like (a giant ball, a throw-back to the Kenner set, a throw-back to the palitoy set, something customizable/stackable) and then the cost expectations that go with it.  A lot of people say "$450-500 max", but the renders and info Jayson had seen for the mega-ball render he had seen and sketched (https://forum.rebelscum.com/threads/the-ghost-21-768-backers.1151891/page-9#post-20630923) would cost in the $800-1000 range. That's going to be a LOT for some folks.  How much detail does it need to be a HasLab "dream" project?  How far can Hasbro push that "dream project" angle before they price themselves out?  If it costs more than most can handle, that will cause a lot of anger and jealousy from the segment that can't afford it.

And the Cantina.  The cost would probably depend greatly on what it looks like.  Is it the whole thing, like the LEGO version?  Should it just be the main bar section with chairs/stools and bottles and bits that the Instagram collectors would LOVE posing figures in for photos but make the old timers complain "who needs all these bottles and pillows"? (Hi, Dave! :P)  And what about pack-ins?  Again, going back to the JD Twitter polls - you'd get some kind of "no oola, no moolah" type reaction to the Cantina if they finally make it and there are no Tonnika Sisters in the tiers ("No Tonnika, No Thanks"?  "No Sisters, No Sale"?).  What about a new Wuher or Chalmun the Wookiee Cantina owner?  Are they "must haves"?  Are you willing to pay extra if Hasbro goes all out on lights/sounds/electronics?

I feel like you could do a crazy "dream level" Cantina for $500 with electronics (the droid scanner at the door, the cantina band soundtrack) and go crazy with the pack-ins - 6-8 figures instead of 3-4.  Do the alien weirdos that have ZERO chance at getting into the main retail line these days - Tzizvvt, new Wuher, Chalmun, Baniss Keeg, new Lak Sivrak, etc.  Support it with a new Greedo, Hammerhead, Ponda, Snaggle carded 4-pack at Hasbro Pulse.

OR, maybe the Cantina doesn't need to be a HasLab?  Maybe Hasbro could go the Hasbro Pulse way with the Cantina like the Jabba's palace set - you'd have to sacrifice the pack-ins down to one (likely Wuher) and then sacrifice all the electronics and sounds to get it down to that $250 range.  Tricky decisions to get right and get the biggest bang for all involved.

(after all this fun speculation and talk, watch it turn out to be a HasLab Bad Batch Shuttle, launched months after the hype of the Series finale when they could have capitalized on that hype if they stuck to the original reveal this week... :P).

That sketch is insane.  I wouldn’t even know what to do with a death star like that and I have an entire basement’s worth of space.  It’s filling up though.

As for the Cantina, I wouldn’t want it to work like the Lego one which displays terribly.  It might work well as a playset but it wouldn’t for me.  The genius about the Jabba’s Palace is that it was designed to fit on a shelf.  I hope they’re smart enough to let that be the max size for playsets.

Maybe the "Cheers" comment still means something and we are still getting a bar...

Just not the bar anyone expects (or would really want in this format). The Haslab will actually be the New Republic pilot bar on Adelphi from The Mandalorian Season 3. It will pair with the upcoming X-Wing Pilot Troop builder pack. Unlocks will be Carson Teva & Trapper Wolffe w/ their jackets and hat, the Snivvian bartender, & Zeb in pilot gear (reusing some of the new Zeb toolings). The "Comlink" comment was supposed to be a reference to Carson Teva talking to Din.

(I say this mostly jokingly.)

I still favor the interpretation that Cheers was a reference to John Ratzenberger, so it is obviously an Echo Base playset. (Also ties in to the pucture they used for the X-Wing Troop Builder pipeline.)

(And yes this is not serious either.)
