Title: San Diego Comic-Con 2016
Post by: Jeff on July 8, 2016, 11:16 AM
Comic Con is right around the corner.  Nerdist has a preview of stuff...

http://nerdist.com/hasbros-new-star-wars-toys-coming-to-sdcc-exclusive/

- Rebels A-Wing (nerf shooting) with Pilot Hera
- Desert Scarf Rey (looks like a new head on the TFA 5POA body) - on the new R1 card though!  Looks like "build a weapon" parts are being phased out in favor of projectile firing accessories  ::)

I'm glad to see that Hasbro isn't constraining themselves to just Rogue One figures on the Rogue One cards.  Hopefully this means we can get some Rebels, a few more TFA, and maybe a few OT/PT/EU figures mixed in as well.

Thank god, no Disney embargo this year (I hope). What a mess that was last year.

I'm hoping they rerelease some HTF figures on Rogue One cardbacks too (Han, Unmasked Kylo, Ackbar, etc.)

Unmasked Kylo is probably a safe bet. Hoping we'll see Luke and General Leia too. Love Rey and the A-Wing. That will be the first ship I buy in a long, long time. Not happy to see the silly BAW thing continuing, but I guess it is what it is.
Title: SDCC Hera Syndulla's A–Wing

Just saw this on Star Wars.com.  Check out the pics and deets at nerdist.com (http://nerdist.com/hasbros-new-star-wars-toys-coming-to-sdcc-exclusive/).  The figure looks great and I love the mini little A-Wing.

Has anyone done a comparison yet to see if this Hera is any different than the one previously released?

Probably needs its own thread, but also in that link...

I hadn't seen this one yet...

The figure looks great and I love the mini little A-Wing.

Looks good... but I think I'll probably pass when I see it.  Can't really justify the $30 for a tiny ship when I already have a bunch of nice 'full-size" A-Wings.  :-\

Has anyone done a comparison yet to see if this Hera is any different than the one previously released?

Different - she has a new helmet/visored head for sure...

Looks like Nerdist removed the packaged product photos from their story.  Here are the boxed and carded shots in case you missed them earlier...

I know some people hate the Nerf element, but my kids loved the new Mil Falcon with the Nerf shooter.  I thought it was really well done as well.

We've already got enough collector focused A-wings, and since Rebels is supposed to be kid oriented, I think this is a perfect fit.

I really hope this means we'll see a more robust line supporting Rebels this year.

Yeah, my outrage was more mock than authentic, lol. It doesn't bug me that much, although I do wish they wouldn't do it.

I'm very thankful for any new Rebels stuff though, and especially a new Hera figure!
Title: Re: San Diego Comic-Con 2016
Post by: Jesse James on July 8, 2016, 06:19 PM
Given the ship looks about 1/3 the size it should be I'm out, haha.  Was hoping for a McAWing but that appears to be back on the to do list for me. I figure the nerf thing will pop off or something, but yeah the tiny ships are always meh for me.  I liked the old Deluxe line better on that front for some reason.

Nerf is big money for Hasbro so I get why they want to incorporate it more.  Kinda shocked it took this long to happen.
Title: Re: San Diego Comic-Con 2016
Post by: Scockery on July 9, 2016, 04:39 PM
Maybe those catalog photoshopped and the ship is bigger. Maybe it'll come with a flying Ugnaught, too.  :-\

But something to look for...on clearance. Because I'm an awful person who doesn't support the brand.
Title: Re: San Diego Comic-Con 2016
Post by: Nicklab on July 10, 2016, 09:17 AM
Not crazy about the Nerf feature on the A-Wing.  But the one takeaway I have from that Hasbro image is that I do not think the Hera figure is being shown to scale with the vehicle in that particular photo.  Still, I do like that the stabilizers on the A-Wing are a bit different from the original A-Wing that dates back to the Droids A-Wing that got carried forward into the POTF2 era and beyond.
Title: Re: San Diego Comic-Con 2016
Post by: Jesse James on July 12, 2016, 12:32 AM
I still think this is going to be pretty darn dinky unfortunately, so I'm probably out...  Then again I bought the Troop transport and I knew before I did so I was going to be disappointed, and I was.  :-\

I wanted a McAwing so badly, and this just is meh, for me at least.  I agree that I don't think it's shown sized properly in the pic though, but I think it's still going to be significantly off.  Hope I am wrong though!  Would love to add an arrowhead to the fleet.

A-Wing scale is widely arguable (the models, matte, etc. all don't jive), but the Rebels A-Wing is pretty solidly represented in the show relative to people...  It's not "tiny" for sure.  Not huge either, but definitely not  like that appears to be.

Guess the Vader Helmet wasn't easy to scan...  The team felt really inspired by the Figure Photography Contest they ran, and I can see why.  Some of that stuff was insane.  Some of it used Galactic Trading Post "Space Walls" too for hyper realism I noticed.  :P

Title: Re: San Diego Comic-Con 2016
Post by: Nicklab on July 22, 2016, 04:24 PM
That's a pretty cool lineup for the Black Series 6" figure line.  I'm happy with pretty much all of those.  I'm a little puzzled/disappointed that Jaina Solo won the poll, but whatever.

The AT-ACT looks pretty cool.  And I'm actually a little tempted to get one because the smartphone control and walking feature are things we've just never seen in a 3.75" figure system vehicle before.  The removable bunker and 3 x pack in figures are a nice feature, too.

Disappointed by the small 3.75" figure showing.  But it seems like they are very clearly holding back for the ROGUE ONE line.

The AT-ACT is now on display in the Hasbro booth (http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb135/nicklabatearthlinkdotnet/sw/Cn_gFyfWcAI46cT_zpsm4ug0dv5.jpg) as part of a pretty extensive diorama.  I think we'll probably see some close-up images when the collecting site reporters wrap up the sessions that they're sitting in currently.

3.75" Rebels animated figure. He's the Mandalorian pilot that shoots down Hera (and also shows up in the aerial battle on Mygeeto (?) during the Kanan comic book series).

Diorama with RO Stormtrooper and Shore Trooper with AT-ACT - the trooper that comes with the walker appears to be different than standard issue Shore Trooper. Likely the Driver.

Looking interesting so far, albeit all of the figures look like they're 5 POA.  From what I can see it looks like these are the figures on tap:

BASIC FIGURES
-Imperial Stormtrooper
-Imperial Death Trooper
-Imperial Shore Trooper

AT-ACT PACK-INS
-Bunker
-Jyn Erso
-Imperial Astromech droid
-Imperial Armor Trooper (not sure of the exact name here.  But this looks like the same type of trooper that's in that Hover Tank in the Jedah scenes from the trailer)

The AT-ACT "Pilot" appears to be the tanker in the hatch of the hover tank thing in the trailer...  Imperial "Tanker"?  I dunno.

Toy Ark has some pretty good images (http://news.toyark.com/2016/07/22/sdcc-2016-hasbro-star-wars-rogue-one-3-75-inch-diorama-214956) of the entire ROGUE ONE diorama.  And I can distinctly make out both the Shore Trooper as well as the Armor Trooper.

AT-ACT with removable BOX! Awesome.

Actually, it looks okay. No where near worth what they'll be charging, but...

The new troopers would be sweeet with articulation. More so than those duck troopers from Force Awakens, anyway.

It looks like there might be some kind of action/Nerf feature on the AT-ACT.  I just looked at some of the Galactic Hunter pictures (https://www.facebook.com/dcurto/posts/10154529368809050) that Dan Curto reposted, and there's some sort of hatch on the nose of the AT-ACT.  Hmmmmm....

Love the new 6 inch reveals. Glad to see Lando, Hera, Tusken Raider and the Royal Guard. Gives me hope we will see the Jawas eventually and probably the Gamorrean Guard. For a minute there I was thinking probably not.

I like the AT-ACT, would like to see it up close and personal. I think the app feature is a brilliant idea. This kind of interactivity is really where toys in general need to be to compete with iPads, video games, etc.

I like the figs shown. Love the troopers. SA versions will certainly come through Wally World though I actually have more 5 POA TFA troops than the SA mostly on account of bad paint apps and availability. Hopefully that gets better. Was hoping for more RO reveals today but you know this is way better than last year and I kind of like surprises anyways.
Title: Re: San Diego Comic-Con 2016
Post by: Jesse James on July 22, 2016, 10:02 PM
The AT-ACT is definitely an interesting toy...  Much more "fun" to my eye than the Falcon was last year.  I think this is a great idea though.  Having it actually walk, interactive with a smart phone...  These are definitely good ideas.

It's smaller than the BAT-AT was, so there's bound to be some pissed folks, and NERF or nothing will piss of some people.  It's a toy though, meant to be a toy, and played with, and I'm just shocked they didn't incorporate NERF stuff earlier to be honest.  It's a huge toy line for them.

I agree on SDCC this year Darby, that it was a generally better one than last year.  They touched on SA 3.75" which they basically wouldn't last year.  They touched on being aware of distribution issues...  That's all you can hope for at a thing like this.

Where they end up with that, who knows, but they have a nice smattering of "everything" and at least they DID touch on 3.75" SA too, so you got a little for everyone there.

Again, the big reveal was clearly (for them anyway) the AT-ACT, but the online community probably poo poo'd it some.  To me it's a cool toy idea.  Once I see one in action, if it works well I may actually pick that up.  A walking AT-AT is cool no matter what.

After the small drips we've had at conventions the past few years, I thought Comic Con was surprisingly eventful. I loved the 6" figures shown, between Lando (!), the Royal Guard, and a Tusken, that covers a lot of my top wants for this line. Plus, I love seeing that Hera is getting made (and hopefully the rest of the crew), as well as Qui-Gon. All of them look pretty great, and I'll likely get them all.

Not a ton of 3 3/4" shown, as usual, but still some goodness with the Rogue One and Rebels stuff. It would be nice if we came to more of a middle ground on articulation, but I think this is just the future of the line at this point. Honestly, if the Black Series exclusives were easier to find, I wouldn't even mind a small number of SA collector figures each year, and continuing the main line as it is. Ditching the deluxe/armor up/whatever line and replacing it with the Black Series across all retailers would be even better.  I agree that the AT-ACT toy looks like a lot of fun. When I showed that to my daughter, she thought it was great and it **** to the top of the achristmas list. Plus, we've got the very well made big AT-AT from a few years back, and that's great.  I'm perfectly fine with this new era of Star Wars offering fun toys for the new generation, just like we had with the vintage line.

Would have been nice to see a bit more from Rogue One (the ultra secrecy with each new movie is going to get old quick), and it really doesn't seem like we will see much OT (or PT/CW) in the basic line anymore which is disappointing. That said, probably the best showing at a Con/Fair in quite some time.

They were and are completely sold out. Sorry.  :(

Nah, they were just shown for the first time.  :D There wasn't a 3 3/4" Star Wars SDCC exclusive.  I guess they'll be part of the next Midnight toy release fiasco.

The way the Nerdist ran their article left me thinking they were exclusive.  They wrote:

And naturally... they just meant an exclusive reveal / story.

There's more updates coming to our image galleries...

As I've said in past years, I really want to thank Darth_Anton for his hard work on this.  Plus, Anton got a Q&A in with Hasbro and they were pretty candid on some topics this year.  3.75" SA is far from dead to them, I'll say that.  But you'll have to stay tuned for the REST they were willing to share. ;)

But Anthony takes a TON of time out of his OWN time at this show, which is big, difficult to navigate, and increasingly complex to get into year in and year out.  He tries to help everyone get exclusives they want, me included on that list, and he's generous with his time and takes incredible photography (and even takes it in such a way I have minimal editing work to do!  Thank you for that!!!!!  lol).

He hits up everything we hope our fans/readers are interested in, and does his best even when the subject matter isn't up his alley.  He engages Hasbro professionally and respectfully, but asks them things that maybe are uncomfortable topics.  He's a great friend to have cover this show for us every year.

Again, keep your eyes on our galleries.  More updates incoming.  Between all our work and life schedules it's not always easy to do things quickly, but things are getting posted and we're happy to have the show covered once again! :)

The last of the pictures have been uploaded that Darth_Anton snapped for us at the show...

Literally hundreds of pics to browse through.  Thanks so much Anthony!

I felt like this show had a little more for everyone at it than past shows...  Hasbro wasn't afraid to talk about things quite as much too.  It's weird how this just felt like a better SDCC than the last few have been.

Make sure you head over and browse.  There's a lot to look through, haha.  Trust me, I had to edit all of it. :P

Thanks for the thanks!  ;) It's always a pleasure. It's funny, I took well over 500 photo's just for JD this year and definitely feels like I still haven't gotten enough. There's just so much to cover and the photographer in me wants to get every detail.

Lol! Good analogy. While I'm bummed at the size, I gotta say, the walking feature alone is pretty nifty.

The part that's being under-reported is that the AT-ACT plays "March of the baby elephants" when it walks.  :D

Which is movie-accurate...because Disney felt Rogue One needed more whimsy.  :-X

Good interview. Kind of reinforces some other comments Steve made pertaining to Vintage/SA type figures. The playset comment is interesting. TMNT clearly has a lot of success with playsets in their line and as mentioned elsewhere, there's a lot of playset love in smaller scales like Imaginext. I think if Hasbro integrated this app feature with the AT-ACT into a larger playset, that would pay dividends. I don't know what the playset would be. SW is more about environments really than a specific location that lends itself to say a Batcave or Turtle Lair type realization. You might say, well the Death Star or Echo Base or Jabba's Palace, but those are all HUGE environments from entertainment that is not current... with the exception of one. So it will be interesting to see if there's any Death Star love for RO. For a lot of us who have been clamoring for some serious DS joy for a long time, this is probably the best shot we've had since 1997. I think a convertible DS playset where the exterior is a big giant model of the station that opens to reveal some split level features and various locations within, with some app integration, would be pretty cool.

Post by: Nicklab on August 3, 2016, 04:12 PM
Solid interview, Anton.  You touched on some good points.  And the playset bit at the end was nice, especially since the Hasbro Star Wars team member brought it up himself.  It's always good to hear that sort of perspective since a lot of the Star Wars team are fans themselves.  Many of them do come to this with ideas about what they would want in the line, and sometimes they work towards making something they would like for their own collections if it can be slotted appropriately into the line.

Yeah, Ant did a really good interview on pretty short-notice...  There weren't really scheduled Q&A's, and you mostly just had to step in and ask if you could ask some stuff...  kind of.  So Ant did, and did a smashing job I thought.

I caught someone (Dave I think) asking about 6" stands so I passed that along to him if he could squeeze it in since he asked here about it.

The finale with the playsets was interesting though...  At least someone there wants to do it, and he lays out the hurdles on it of course, and this stuff is all ignored by many collectors it seems, and I still maintain whatever they do will be met with incessant bitching about it regardless, but hey it was asked and it was answered and it doesn't get much better than that. :P

It's also nice to hear them, directly, addressing 3.75" SA...  not a lot said, but it sounds like a lot more is coming between this and the Forbes Article Yakface.com brought up.  I'm anxious to hear what this SA future is...  and hoping it's easier to get than the SA present is because, well, holy **** this current situation is frustrating.

I'm especially anxious because of Rogue One being set in the OT, and while I liked SA TFA figures when I got them, I gotta say, it's hollow compared to OT era stuff to me for some reason, haha.
