Title: Who the Hell does this?
Post by: Jim on September 26, 2005, 07:52 AM
I wont link the pic.  But I was looking at a topic on another forum and noticed some peoples Clone Armies.  Now I have nothing against someone who wants hundreds of Clones, but why would someone army build cases of figs and leave them unopened in the boxes?  I am just not getting the logic.  I would feel like such a tool for even posting a pic of 5-6 or more cases of Shocktrooers, SA Clones, etc still in the package.   ???

Seems ridiculous to me too.  If you are going to army build, you would think it would make sense to open them...

For the most part that sounds like "collectors" out to make a buck in the long run.

Still when I used to live in a small crappy apartment, I kept my army builders in their bubbles b/c I had no where to display.  Now with the basement bedroom dedicated to SW, I opened everything up.

I'll never understand keeping somthing in the card. But armybuilding box sets and keeping them carded? Rediculous. Unless they are moving or somthing soon, then I can forgive them.

If you're not opening them, or planning to opening them in the future, you're not army building. You're hoarding.

There's a slim chance that it's collecting because you like how a slew of carded clones looks, which does seem odd but nothing is out of the realm of possibility I figure.  I'd certainly have suspicions of hoarding, or scalping though, no doubt.

Of course they could just not have the time to open stuff and display it right now so the best way to keep their stuff stored at the moment is carded in Hasbro cases.  I could see that...  I know a lot of people with boxed/carded stuff they haven't opened yet but intend to at some point.  That seems to be a theme with some of us actually. :)

[raises hand]

I've got at least 40 of the #41 SA Clone Troopers here that are still carded. I'm an army builder, and these will all be open... as soon as I have somewhere to put them  :D

Can someone PM me the link to this photo you guys are all talking about?  That other site's forums are such a mess (the first page of the ROTS forums is practically all stickied topics) that I wouldn't know where to look.

I have to report that I am guilty of having cases of unopen army builders, but with me, its just because I have not had the time to open or display them.

As a matter of fact, and JediMac can attest to this, I just pulled all of my army builders out with the intent to open them because the packaging is taking up too much room. I haven't done it yet, and now I'm using the mass opening party as a reward for finishing a certain project.

This will likely be one of the most fun things you've ever done as a collector, Anton.  There is nothing like opening a lot of figures all at once.  When I first started collecting again with POTF2, I left all my figures carded from the first 9 in 1995 up until the Bossk wave hit in 1997.  At that point, I asked myself, "Why am I keeping these carded" and opened all of them in one sitting.  It's still one of the coolest experiences I've had.   ;D

Indeed. I just opened all of my ROTS figures from #1 - #56 the other day to put them in my display cabinet. My girlfriend thought I was insane, but it was a hell of a lot of fun. One thing to remember when opening a whole bunch of figures at the same time: bring plenty of garbage bags  ;)

Yup I agree, I have some stuff liying around for ages that is slated for opening and some in a garbage bag ready to go, about 1 week ago I opened about 20 figures assorted, and had that greatest time.

3/4 of my clone army is still carded. They are waiting for their final 3 clone bretheren before I unleash my grand clone army.

There are times I get several carded figures, and often, I try to  open one each day (especially whenever I need a little cheer). Right now, I have several packs of Galactic Heroes waiting their turn...

Typically I open the stuff up as soon as I get home from a toy run. I have little plastic action figure sized baggies. So i put one fig plus their accessories in a bag. Then when I get enough of them, I put 10-20 of those figs in a freezer bag. (Carefully so as not to have them bend over time.)
I find this saves a ton of space. There are those times though that I don't have time to open figs right away. In that case I usually reserve an hour or so on a weekend to open, bag, and catalog them. (Yeah, I catalog everything I get).

I'd love to set this stuff all up, but I've run out of room a few years ago in my apratment, hence the need to catalog stuff. I'm waiting on a house deal to go through, then look-out. That army is going to be let loose!

I've just edged over 1300 Clone/Stormtroopers and they are begging to be step up in grand dioramas! That's going to be euphoric for me. I'm getting tingly just thinking about it...(Ah sorry just a little too much info there, ha ha)

Um call me a pessimist but how about a pic of them?  They dont have to be set up or anything.  1300 just sounds unbelievable.  Around 7K bucks :o.  Not calling you out on them.  Hell.  Yes I am ;D

Sorry for the page width but it looks better bigger. :P

Top shelf: #41s; basic #6; #33 red; #34 regular
midddle shelf: #6 red; Tarkin, Tillis, Bacara; royal guards (blue3; red1) then mix of figs for JuvyD
bottom shelf: #6 red; #34 black; #33 green; #38 then mix of figs for Darth Green

I do actually have some (well, sadly, lots) loose of all of these, but they're packed away.  I should get around to opening these, hopefully before my wife gets home :-X

I have intentions of opening my figures at one point. When i get a house and can display them all.

I've never understood this either. If you are going to get 100 of them, you might as well open them up, because I think everyone would agree the army builders are generally a lot cooler loose and in formation.

Its sorta like they are keeping them all MOC because in the back of their mind they want to open them someday...

Over the last two weeks, I've been opening up some of my boxed stuff, and it is pretty fun. I stiff have to find display space though. :P

I stiff too, but toys don't usually do it for me.  Well, maybe some from Japan.

Duhhhh, my name is Anton. :P

I have to admit that for opening my ROTS I am guilty of not opening. I have 12 SA not opened (14 opened and I plan to buy 10 more for some customs). I have 13 Tactical Ops with 2 opened. I have 10 Shock Troopers with 5 opened. etc. That is just clones. On the other figures I have opened the figures I really wanted, and am waiting now for the week between Christmas and New Years (when I am off from teaching) and having an opening day when we open up all the figures.
Now, I have to say, my 11 year old son perhaps is more true to the belief that we should open when we get them because he does. I really should open as I find stuff because it really does save space, even if all I do is put them in baggies and put them in a tub til I can display them.

As long as your going to open them eventually, I don't see anything wrong with it. But it does seem rather pointless if you buy troopers just to keep them in the box.

I've opened over half my army builders now. I'm saving what's left for a reward once I finish a project.

I've made the decision to open all my figs, so I've been pretty busy with that lately. It felt wierd at first because I'd been a carded collector all these years, but now that I'm a little more used to it, it is pretty fun.

I know what you mean StarWax. When I opened the bulk of my armies before the new year, it was a nice rutine to open a few every night while watching TV after the kids had gone to bed. Now that I'm on hold, my evening is a little empty.
