Title: Target Vintage Collection 9-Figure Box Set
Post by: Jeff on August 13, 2010, 02:42 PM
Target seems to be on board with the Vintage theme - this Winter they will have an exclusive 9-pack of figures - one big box that contains three vintage Kenner style figure 3-packs.

Pic/video was blurry, so I couldn't make out all nine of the figures (I think Hoth Han was in there), but hopefully we'll get some pics and/or the presentation posted and then we can figure out all the figures included.

This sounds incredibly cool too...  Dale was saying it's massive, and he actually seemed really geeked about the set.  I heard some kind of Luke, Hoth Han, Hoth Rebel, Lando, and I can't recall who else now off-hand were in the set.

FX-7, Bespin Guard and an AT-AT driver were others.

Seems like overkill...making them all in one box.

I didn't even know the vintage 3-packs existed until I saw pictures of them in a collectibles guide, so that sense of nostalgia just isn't quite there for me.

Are these repacks or repaints with Vintage deco?

I remember the packs, but never thought Hasbro would go nuts making them.  This is, to me, like the Error set at C5...  It's for the die-hard vintage collectors.  I am guessing there won't be deco variants on the set, not really anyway, and so it won't be something I'm dying to have just for the packaging.  I like the idea though.  I think it's neat.

I went back and re-viewed that last segment.  Here's what I was able to make out of the three 3-packs:

Set 1 - Bespin Guard, Lando Calrissian & Luke Skywalker
Set 2 - Han Solo (Hoth), Hoth Rebel Trooper & FX-7
Set 3 - 4-LOM, AT-AT Driver & TIE Fighter Pilot

I guess this begs the question...are these straight rereleases or slight tweaks (like real elbows on Lando and a White Bespin Guard)?  I guess we'll find out soon

JEDIINSIDER has the slides. Land looks upgraded....hard to tell.

The Bearded Rebel...again.

Yeah, I'm thinking the "one big box" thing might deter some purchasers (or cause clearance waits again).  Although it does appear to be basically repacks, I kind of like it from the nostalgic point of view.  I'm wondering what the price will be - with nine figures like that, you'd think around $60 at least, even with repacks.  Haven't decided if I'll pick it up or not, but I might.  I know a lot of it is timing and everything, with the return of the vintage line, but I think its funny how much more "all out" they seem to be going for Empire's 30th than they did for the original Star Wars (ANH)'s 30th a few years ago.

This was a welcome surprise.

Although when we tell Hasbro we want more "Vintage"-themed stuff, I think we meant as far as figures - not packaging. We're already getting that in the basic figure line. Although it's very nice to see what the retro packaging was like.

There's 2 positive things I can say about this - 1. Nice packaging. 2. With all the straight repacks, at least we're getting the rarer, less widespread-released Bespin Guard.

I wonder why Hasbro would already(!) start repacking the new Bespin Luke! And Han and 4-LOM are currently out on basic figure cards (and it's not like 4-LOM's a chore to find). And why would Hasbro repack that version of the Hoth Rebel and not the beardless one (even though he's coming in the other Target sets)!

Great idea, but all in one box... I don't know.  And the figure choices are kind of meh.

I'd be down for this if they were individual sets. But in one big box...

This is the kind of poorly thrown together exclusives that I buy purely because I want to have one of everything in my MOC/MIB collection.

There is absolutely no reason to buy this exclusive unless (a) you're buying it as a gift for someone you hate; or (b) you're an OCD collector like me who gets at least one of everything.

Or C) You're REALLY into the Vintage card/look...  To me it's not much different than the Snowspeeder or AT-AT in vintage packaging.  They're capturing the nostalgia a lot hold for the vinty line...  Since I open everything, I can't really care about any of it.  It's neat looking though.  But to me they're not worth buying.

To a guy looking to jump back in because he's so into the "vintage" stuff though...  I could see them picking this up.

This set a bit of a wasted opportunity. I get the nostalgia but they could have went he route of the Geo sets with a few minor upgrades to a couple of the figures:

Lando New Head/Arms
Foo Man Choo Vintage Head for the Bespin Guard
Battle Damage Deco on Luke
Beardless Rebel (Maybe different hair deco)

If they actually had some newness I would have bit but I have to pass here.

I agree, they should have at least TRIED to offer something new in this set, not just thrown together nine figures.

I would have rathered that they just gave Target an exclusive wave of Vintage individually packaged figures from the Empire Strikes Back - Lando, Bespin Guard (with a new head w/moustache), AT-AT Driver, Hoth Han w/Hood Up, TIE Pilot, FX-7 and Hoth Rebel Commander could have just as easily been carded individually, shipped to Target in a case of figures and then put on the pegs with the rest of the Vintage line.

I think A LOT more people would be interested in them then the way these are presented. Openers who don't care about collecting one of each MOC could just pick and choose which figures they need for their collection and completists like me would want to buy complete sets. Doubling up on the troopers in the shipping case would help prevent other figures (i.e. Lando and Han) from being over-shipped so the case could look like this:
3x Bespin Guard (three cause he's the one new gem in the assortment)
2x AT-AT Driver
2x TIE Pilot
2x Hoth Rebel Commander
1x FX-7
1x Lando
1x Han

If you're someone who is jumping back into collecting Star Wars then that means you used to collect the line and you know what kind of B.S. Hasbro has pulled in the past. I would totally pass on this exclusive because in the back of my mind, I would see that (a) two of the figures are ones I already have from vintage ESB wave 1; (b) I would wonder: What's to stop Hasbro from taking these sculpts and releasing them at some point down the line over the next two years on vintage cardbacks?; and (c) if I really want some of these other sculpts NOW, I can get them off eBay or in the case of Han, just buy the Legends figure.

There's an express that goes "Work smarter, not harder". Hasbro really needs to start being "smarter" about their exclusives and not just working "harder" at getting them out in the first place. A bad exclusive that Target is left holding the bag on, hurts the line in the long run.

Same here.  I'd pick them up if they were sold individually as well, but it is sometimes tougher to plunk down $60 (or more) at once for something that is essentially a box of repacks.  I mean, there are some that I wouldn't mind extras or more of (Imperials, FX-7, Hoth Soldier, Bespin Guard, etc.) - and none of the figures included are "stinkers", but for the price, it would have been nice to have a little bit of newness.
Title: Re: Target Vintage Collection 9-Figure Box Set
Post by: Nicklab on August 14, 2010, 02:23 PM
To Hasbro's credit, I'm actually kind of grateful that there are no truly new figures in this set.  There was a really easy opportunity for them to cash in here and they seem to have let it go.

There were a few opportunities for Hasbro to make some upgrades/changes to a few figures here, but they seem to have passed.  The obvious candidates seem to be the Bespin Guard, Lando and the Hoth Rebel.

Another alternate portrait Bespin Guard would be cool, but I don't want something like that to be the incentive to buy this 9-pack.  And the same goes for the Hoth Rebel Trooper.  I like the running change and as it stands I'm not totally enthused with the prospect of buying multiples of that figure to round out my Hoth Rebels.  And the VOTC Lando that's in this pack could definitely use some upgrades in articulation plus a removable cloak.

The AT-AT Driver and TIE Pilot definitely have their troop building uses.  But Hoth Han?  How many incarnations of that figure have we seen?  FX-7 is an awesome figure, but still a reissue.  And the Luke Skywalker figure just came out.  And 4-LOM?  There is such a thing as overkill.

I'm going to go guessing the price of this beast - if we get 4 figures in a BP for around $27, then this would be - what? - in the $60 range? Around what somebody else in an above post guessed.

Could've been something like this:

Imperial Commander (Needa in black with At-At Commander legs)
AT-AT Commander (Vintage colors, all dark grey)
TIE Pilot (grey boots and gloves)
Bespin Guard (Sgt. Eidan with caucasian skin)
Could Car Pilot (different colored mustache or possibly dark skinned)
Ugnaught (head swap on the two recent ones, with color tweaks)
Hoth Rebel trooper (beardless)
Wedge Antilles (Snow Speeder, admittedly, not a vintage release, but follows the trend of making Wedge hard to get!)
Luke Skywalker (Bespin, classic Kenner deco...peachy clean uniform and oh-so-blonde)

Just as glad it wasn't. I have a hard time buying big sets and opening collector packaging.

It's a nice set I suppose but these are going to rot on the shelves I think.  They should have broken them up and sold them individually in my opinion.  The only set that really kind of pulls me is the Bespin set because of the Wing Guard, but not enough to drop the amount of money they want for all 9 figures.

Anyway, it's a pass for me but at the same kind of a nice vintage nod that we were not expecting.

Anybody have a handle on what figures the "real" Vintage ESB three-packs held? I haven't looked at them in years, but these line-ups seem really familiar? If they match up I give Hasbro mondo props for doing it right. If not, well, then I could see a whole bunch of other ways they could have taken these sets.

A rumor is starting to circulate that the Bespin Guard in the 9-pack may not be Utris M'toc as shown in the packaged version at C5.  And it may in fact be an homage to the original vintage Bespin Guard with the mustache.

But, there are plenty of photos of the back of the package which show Utris M'toc there, too.  Is it possible the package was only a mockup?  Certainly.  But sticking one retooled figure in with another 8 reissues is sure to be unpopular with the core collecting audience.

If they do a Bespin variant, but find a way for this to retail for $50, I can live with that.  I can use the extras for customs, dioramas, etc.

But if it's more than that, I'll pass or wait for the set to hit clearance.

The Bespin Guard variants are definitely welcome.  But I really hope this isn't a strategy that Hasbro might employ in order to get people to buy the 9-pack.  As for the validity of the rumor?  I'm not feeling all that secure with the source that passed it onto me.  But it's definitely bound to be fodder for discussion.

I am in if that's the case. At least there are enough army builders and the new Bespin Luke to make it tolerable. If they slapped in the Beadless Hoth Trooper, gave Lando SA arms/new head and had the Foomanchoo Guard they would have a blow out on their hands. I am sure what we see is what we are getting. From what I read they confirmed at C5 they were straight repacks.

If there is one new figure I will bite but man I can see the repack returns will be high. I am expecting that on the Hoth sets with the AT-ST driver and beardless Rebel.

This packs suggest potj fx7 is the last evolution of the character up to these days.

Perhaps Hasbro could have release a battle pack of these 3 imperials: at at driver, tie fighter and snowtrooper.

Seems pretty darned close to me (http://www.12back.com/figures/multipacks/3packs.php3) (scroll down to the bottom).  Or as close as you can get without the right Bespin Guard.  Hasbro did their homework on this one.

From Yakface:

Quote
It's a very exciting time for Star Wars as the extraordinary Target exclusive Vintage 9-pack will be going on sale soon (Nov. 28th). There are two important things to note with this set. First, this set will be more limited than some of our other recent exclusives. Second, Target (and we) are so excited about the Vintage collection overall and these 3-packs that we have decided to keep this "collection within a collection" idea going at Target. Another wave of 3 3-packs will be coming in Spring and like these, they follow the Vintage character lineups. We think this an exciting development, and thanks to Target's support, hopefully fans will be treated to even more in this series. Thanks again for the support and be sure to get to Target soon. Happy Holidays - the Hasbro Star Wars team.

So, this set is on sale starting Sunday, will be very limited and we're getting another 9 pack in the spring. Hopefully more repacks so I can pass on them.

I'm confused.  The upcoming Target set is a 9 pack.  But in the Q&A, hasbro refers to the next wave (spring '11) as 3-packs.  Am I reading that right that the next wave will have packs of three available for sale, or will it probably be packaged together, 9 total figures/1 bar code (like the winter '10 offering)?
Title: Re: Target Vintage Collection 9-Figure Box Set

I'd have preferred Target get more big Battle Packs or something like the Geonosis arena two-packs. If they do release them as 3 packs, instead of a 9 figure boxed set, I might be interested depending on the figures.

I would agree... I think there's a lot of reasons why this is a good set, and probably will be a success for both Hasbro and Target.

On top of the good price, these are all good figures... one would think this should make for a nice gift set for kids this Christmas, and collectors who want it for the nostalgia factor get a very unique set for display.

Then you also have people like myself who see this as an easy way to purchase a set of figures for additional diorama needs/customizing needs.

Overall, I think this first set is really nice. And I think future sets can be too, as long as Hasbro puts the "best of" versions for characters in these.

I also would not be surprised if Target approached Hasbro about future offerings like this, and if that's the case, I'd say that Hasbro would have every reason to take them up on it.

Personally, I plan on getting one set at full price.  Then if they go on clearance, I'll consider more.

From the Q&A at figures.com (http://www.figures.com/forums/news/11963-star-wars-q-november.html) yesterday:

Target actually asked us to create it at that size for a special merchandise end-cap. So the answer is, yes, the sets will have a special place on the shelf and thus should arrive at retail (November 28th!) well-protected with a dedicated "home" where they will reside. We hope they won't last long, though....we are announcing (via this Q&A...thanks for spreading the word!) that the 9-pack is actually the start of what will be additional assortments of Vintage 3-packs coming to Target. We will be following the exact lineup of the original legendary 3-packs, with follow-up waves slotted for Spring and Fall (although delivered as 3-packs, rather than as a set of 3-packs). So this 9-pack is a "must-have" start of a great ongoing collection. This should be very exciting news for fans...stay tuned for more details at Toy Fair!

That's pretty cool to hear, and I'm sort of glad they are coming as three packs instead of the big mamma jamma box of figures like this first round.  I'm on the fence with this first pack.  The nostalgia factor definitely ropes me in, and there are some figures in there I wouldn't mind having extras of.  Although I do have all but that version of the Bespin Guard already, I wouldn't mind another FX-7, Bespin Luke, Hoth Trooper, TIE Fighter Pilot, etc.  All are pretty nicely done figures.  Time to go check out what other figures were included in those original vintage packs to see what we might get next year :).

Wait, just to clarify since I'm confused here, so for the following assortments, they won't come in 1 great big 9-pack like the upcoming version?

If that's so, I'm sure they'll do a hell of a lot better at retail than the upcoming pack. But then again, this pack has the benefit of coming out during the holiday season...

It seems to me that 9 figures for $50 is a hell of a deal.  That's less than 6 bucks apiece and you get some killer packaging, so I sure plan on grabbing this set.

$50 is only a deal if it's something you wanted in the first place.  Admittedly these things are always a toss-up, but at least some of the other $50 sets had repaints or new accessories or something.  This... I already have this.  But for me the boxes just end up in the dumpster, so.  Hopefully it's engaging for packaging fans and new people, because zzzzzzzzzzz.

I was hoping for ROTJ style 2-packs. Random figures thrown on generic cardbacks with no accessories.  Gotta do something will all those overseas factory rejects.  ;)

Does this mean that new versions of Hoth Luke and Lobot are on the way?

We already know Bespin Han is coming. But the Luke and Lobot figures we have so far, are hardly "Vintage Quality" so I guess they're going to do something similar to what's happening now - we got the upgraded Bespin Luke in the Vintage line and that same figure is also in the 9-pack.

Not necessarily ESB 3-packs (unless they said so and I missed it)  Star Wars had 3 packs, too.

Based on this photo (http://theswca.com/images-toys/three-pack-set.html) at the SW Collector's Archive, this is the complete list of the original vintage three packs, which Hasbro seems to claim they will be sticking to rather closely.  I figure it should give us a good idea of what to expect, especially if Hasbro follows the modus operandi they've used for the Vintage Collection so far (i.e. "the best version of the figure possible"):

Set 1 (Android Set):
-C-3P0
-Chewbacca
-R2-D2

Set 2 (Hero Set):
-Han Solo
-Princess Leia
-Obi-Wan 'Ben' Kenobi

Set 3 (Villain Set):
-Stormtrooper
-Darth Vader
-Death Squad Commander

Set 4 (Villain Set):
-Sand People
-Boba Fett
-Snaggletooth (Red)

Set 5 (Creature Set):
-Hammerhead
-Walrus Man
-Greedo

Set 6 (Hero Set):
-Luke X-Wing Pilot
-Obi-Wan 'Ben' Kenobi
-Han Solo

Set 7 (Droid Set):
-R5-D4
-Death Star Droid
-Power Droid

Set 8 (Rebel Set):
-2-1B
-Leia in Hoth Gear
-Rebel Commander

Set 9 (Imperial Forces):
-Bossk
-IG-88
-Snowtrooper

Set 10 (Imperials):
-Imperial Officer
-Dengar
-AT-AT Driver

Set 11 (Hoth Rebels)
-Han Solo in Hoth Gear
-Rebel Soldier
-FX-7

Set 12 (Bespin Set):
-Han Solo in Bespin Fatigues
-Ugnaught
-Lobot

Set 13 (Imperial Set):
-Zuckuss (4-LOM)
-AT-AT Driver
-TIE Fighter Pilot

Set 14 (Bespin Alliance):
-Bespin Guard
-Lando Calrissian
-Luke Skywalker in Bespin Fatigues

Set 15 (Rebel Set):
-Leia in Hoth Gear
-R2-D2 with Sensorscope
-Luke Skywalker in Hoth Gear

Set 16 (Bespin Set)
-C-3P0 with Removable Limbs
-Ugnaught
-Cloud Car Pilot

There's definitely a lot of room for Hasbro to do some simple repacks here, what with many of these figures already appearing this year in the Vintage Collection lineup, and a few (Bespin Han and Walrus Man) being confirmed for the 2011 Vintage lineup.  Outside of some minor upgrades (mainly in the realm of ball-jointed elbows), the only figures that really stick out as needing totally new, from the ground-up versions are Lobot, Hammerhead, Snaggletooth, and the Hoth Rebel Commander.  Which, given my pessimistic attitude, means Hasbro will probably not do the packs that those figures are included in.   :-\

Yeah - I see that now - I did look in my copy of the Action Figure Archive - and I found the page with the ESB 3-packs so I thought those nine were it.

Oops...

Anyway, yeah, once you factor in the seven sets from ANH - they have plenty of wiggle room to make sets that are comprised of figures we've gotten before.

It would be great if they were to make that Power Droid / R5-D4 / Death Star Droid set - that way we could get the modern Power Droid sculpt in Vintage colors...

Saw tomorrow's store ad for the Vintage 9-pack - $49.99 - limited edition - no DPCI is listed in the ad. 3 stores I went to did not have this in-stock or in their systems yet. I wouldn't expect too many folks finding this tomorrow.

Edit: just got the DPCI - 087-06-1620

My store had the flyer up, but did not have any out.

Two women were dismantling the Star Wars marquee display so I asked them. One of the two women has given me attitude in the past. But unlike previous times, I had the flyer on my side. I think those Sunday circular ads are like the Bible to Target employees.

Once they saw the 9-pack ad in the circular, it was to see how fast they could run into the back and bring out the item.

They come in cases of six 9-packs per box and the outer box around the three 3-packs is entirely TOO BIG. But at least it's one less item I need for the MIB/MOC collection...

How fast did they bring it out? Worth it?

Pretty fast, the fastest I've ever seen actually.

For everyone else in the audience, Piet and I live pretty close to each other and frequently hit stores together and grab things for each other...

Anyway, there are some Targets in the area where the staff is always pretty helpful and then there are those where they treat you like you're trying to burn down the store if you're asking for more Star Wars to come out to the pegs.

There is one store where the manager is probably the worst, so much so that in the past, when he's seen me, he'll grab his walkie-talkie and communicate out to all employees "No Star Wars is to be brought out from the back room" - while I'm walking back to toys. I've affectionately nick-named him the "Helmet Hair Manager".

Well, recently, a new manager has popped up at the Target nearest to where I live and due to her attitude, I've nicked named her the "Helmet Hair Manager's Wife".

So Piet - believe it or not, it was the Helmet Hair Manager's Wife who helped me this morning - that's why I likened the Sunday circular to the Bible - 'cause once she saw the picture and the circular and that it was to start today, the fact that I was asking for something to be brought out suddenly became an absolutely reasonable request and she was all too happy to run into the stock room and bring me out a case of them.

She even joked with me about how big the box was.

So in response to your second question. Yes, it was worth it to ask Helmet Hair Manager's Wife for assistance just to see her act completely opposite to how she normally responds when I ask if a peg or shelf space can be re-filled.

As far as to whether or not the set it self is "worth it" - no, it absolutely is not. For me it's one of those purchases that I begrudgingly make simply to satisfy the completist in me. If I was an opener only, I would totally pass on this set - which is why I only snagged one of them, there's no point in getting one of these to open since I already have all of these figures opened in duplicate already.

I saw these at our local Target as well, about 10 or so of them set on top of that endcap display thingy (with the TV) that they set up for the CW exclusives and everything else.  If we weren't so tight with Christmas spending, I may have picked it up.  Granted, I have several of most of the figures in that set (with the exception of FX-7, that Bespin Guard, and the TIE Pilot), but the packaging just makes it so darn tempting.  Plus, I wouldn't mind extras of all those mentioned figures, and have actually been looking into getting another FX-7 anyways.  If they don't disappear quickly, I may cave, but the smarter side of me says I should skip it since I'd be opening them anyways.  Like it was already mentioned, the package is way too big.  If these came out as just 3 packs, I would have jumped on at least a couple I think.  Sort of glad to see this exclusive continuing next year, even if it is repacks.  There are several possibilities (VOTC Han, Resurgence R2, EB Chewie, etc.) that could be included that I wouldn't mind having extras of anyways.

Hasbro puts out Battle Packs all the time with crap figures in them... at least these are good figures.  And they're a limited release and a fair price per figure.  Plus a great novelty item.

That said, I haven't seen it in person yet.  Not sure if I'll pull the trigger, if I do it will probably be to get more of these figures loose for customs and army builders.

Yeah, and I stopped buying most battle packs two years ago.  I just won't buy three figures that I have for one new one, no matter how much I want it.

As far as novelty, I think it's way too expensive for a casual purchase.  Rocket firing Fett is a good novelty.  Anyway, I'm just goofing around.  I don't hate this set or anything, just bored by most of waht Hasbro puts out.  I have money to spend, but there's not enough new product to interest me.

After seeing these in person yesterday, I was surprised at just how huge the outer shell packaging was.  Kind of bulky... for someone keeping the set "as is" that's a huge waste of space...

I though the figures in it seemed fine, but I really wish the Hoth Rebel utilized the scarf.

Other than 4-LOM being included, I liked everything else in the set though.  It was also cool seeing the FX-7 repaint in there.  Wish they had repainted 4-LOM more or something.  If they had, or he was replaced by something better, I bet I would have bought the set.  I might at some point though anyway.

Oh yeah - they CLAIM its extremely limited and sure, maybe we're talking that normally Target buys 75,000 units of any exclusive and for these, they only made 40,000 (or whatever the minimum order quantity is).

But the cynic in me says that the extra "message from DePriest" that accompanied all of the recent Q&A answers was a marketing ploy to get as many people as possible to jump at this set.

If you think about it - there has been past precedents where a big box store will have the first wave of an exclusive and then cancel on the second wave due to poor sales of the first wave. WalMart did it with the cantina sets. Target did it to Playmates ages ago with the Star Trek transporter figures.

So net-net is that the message was an attempt to get collectors, scalpers, etc... to run out and grab this 9-pack under the guise of it being "more limited" than the other exclusives (heck, make 1 less than the others and you can still claim it's more limited, you're just not saying by how much) and thus solidify the agreement between Hasbro and Target to have two more waves of 3-packs.

I think having this as a 9-pack was a huge mistake, they should have shipped the 3-packs individually, like they are doing in the next two waves and like Chewie says, they should have made little tweaks like given us another way of getting the Rebel w/Scarf and in the Bespin set, throw in the moustached Bespin Guard - I mean really, how hard could it be to come up with a new head. The Imperial Set stinks, but that's the configuration of the old Kenner set, so the only thing they could have done to make that set stand on its own would be to introduce an new updated TIE Pilot, which would have been fine.

I just hope that if they still go through with six more sets of them, there is something "new" (even if it's a 'new hat' to borrow from the Simpsons) that makes them worth buying.

It's mind boggling that people complain about sets/BPs with only one or two "new" figures, but when one with all repacks comes along other folks start pointing out how it should've included one or two "new" figures.  ::)

I thought part of the genius of this set was that it was something loose collectors would not "have" to buy. This is clearly something intended for the folks collecting the vintage figures in package, and based on the timing, parents looking for a holiday gift set.

^ Seconded...

I'd prefer either we get battlepacks with NEW figures (and by "new" I'm saying repainted army builders, kitbashed "new" figures, or the odd truly new items snuck in), or nothing new and just repacks aimed at kids and a specific play pattern like they've said in the past.

The Endor sets weren't terrible, for example.

I'm sure if this pack of 9 figures had something new in it, I'd be frustrated.  I honestly don't want the set, so I'm passing on it because it's a packaging fans wet dream, and that's cool to me.  Besides the TIE Pilot and Hoth Rebel, there's not much there I want more of that I don't already have enough, or more than enough of.  :-\

I feel the same way with vehicles, especially if they're anywhere above $25.  If the new AT-AT had included a retooled Veers figure in some fashion, that would've been incredibly annoying to me.

Anything that comes in under $17-ish I'm a little more lenient on those feelings.  If you can get a 2-pack for $12 or so, and one figure's a repack or something, and another's something new you want...  It just stings a little less.

This article from JTA (http://jeditemplearchives.com/content/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=7246). Sorry, I had meant to include it in my previous post, but I got lazy... ::)

I've been hearing similar reports from other collecting sites that these are a smidgen hard to come across. But it's also true that when Hasbro gives these items "limited" runs, it just seems to be a marketing ploy, because they're really not that hard too find. Even the "EXTREMELY limited" SDCC CPs (Darth Maul/Owen, Camie/Fixer) are still available at Hasbro Toy Shop.
Title: Re: Target Vintage Collection 9-Figure Box Set

Limited though, is very relative beyond just saying, "well we made 40,000 instead of 50,000".  Limited could mean they made the bare minimum production run required to sell them.  Some limited items have also seemed "unlimited", but reality is that they probably were rather short production, and just didn't sell well.

There's a lot of if's with the term.  I think Hasbro's generally honest with it though, that something got a shorter production run.  The EU wave for instance, the latest EE Comic packs...  These things do seem somewhat limited.  I think, at the same time though, that the Wal-Mart A-Wing was a limited item...  I didn't see it at many WM stores.  It just didn't sell well even at the ones it wound up at.

Even as a packaged collector who also buys most everything else again to open, I find very little "genius" behind any release that features 100% repacked product.

This is why I said two things should have been different with this release - the three packs should have been individually sold, and within reason, it would have been nice if there was something unique about at least one figure in each 3-pack.

And by different, I'm talking about a new paint application or including a figure that you can only get in a bigger package (like the Hoth Rebel w/ scarf).

For the next two waves, I'd love to see them do stuff like was in that Rebelscum April Fool's joke - if you're gonna do the ANH set with the Death Squad Commander, then pack in the Death Star Trooper we already have and give him the Kenner paint app.

Then, from a marketing/sales perspective the real genius is that a completist packaged collector will still buy it. A parent might still buy it. But now, a loose collector might also buy it to add that one unique figure to their collection.

How incredibly witty. I'm sorry that I didn't spell it out fully, but it's no secret that the scalpers just don't target the Star Wars line like they used to.

To think that a press release type statement goes out like that and doesn't have the motive of educating not just collectors but also the eBay scalpers looking to scalp a "rare" item, is incredibly naïve.

I don't disagree with breaking them up into just individual 3-packs, though you're going to run into the same issue all assortments like this have where one set outsells all others and you're left with pegwarmers I'm afraid.  That's not new of course, but it's pretty inevitable.

I don't agree with the whole, "slip a unique figure in" thing though, really.  Buying 3 things to get 1 I want just sucks, unless the price is incredibly reasonable.  In this case, if they're broken down to just individual 3-packs, one could assume Hasbro will raise the price some and that you're looking at possibly $17-ish for a set.  $17 sucks for one figure.

Considering a Death Squad Commander would be in demand by many, and multiples to a number of people, I think that concept stinks even more, personally.  :-\  Especially if it's more than just a repaint of the 30th AC figure.

To little kids, though, especially since they're the only customers Hasbro seems to be trying to please these days, these sets would be an automatic buy if there was a lightsaber-wielding character included in each one. Little kids aren't too into the blaster-wielders (take Han Solo, for instance), they want to get the cool-looking dude with the glowing sword. If the 9-pack was divided into just 3 individual packs, the Luke set would probably be the best seller, because a parent's first reaction would be to get the set with the lightsaber.

I gotta jump in to defend poor ol' Han-- I don't know if kids don't want Han or they don't want *those* Han figures.  Bespin hasn't been on the market for a while, and I don't count a torture rack as something any parent would jump on for their kids.  Every Han since 2006 (save for the pricey vintage ones and the 2006 Cantina one) have had some weird embellishment or otherwise less-than-normal feature, and it seems the Saga Legends ones all are doing just fine, more or less.

Today's parents are more Star Wars literate than 10 years ago-- your 25-35 year old adult today was a child of the toy orgy that was the 1980s.  The toy industry knows this and is marketing to them/us because mommy and daddy love to live vicariously through the kid's toy purchases, hence Strawberry Shortcake and, to some extent, Transformers' post-beast revival. (But not He-Man, because everybody hates him. Even Skeletor.)

...that and if you're going full-on Vintage, you're gonna run out of lightsaber-friendly characters for these sets real quick.  The Vintage line had, what, seven Lukes, Obi-Wan, and Vader?  And of those Lukes, several never had a lightsaber packed with them in the old days, or in the case of Stormtrooper Luke, at all?  I'm curious how strict the 3-packs will be to the vintage figure selections... because if it's all repacks I'm going to have a ton of things to not buy in 2011.  And bless them for it, I could stand to skip a few figures.

Now that I've seen this in a store and had an opportunity to see it up close, I can weigh in on it. Personally, I'm glad there's nothing new so I can skip it, however, if I can find one mint on sale, I'll grab it with a Clone Cash coupon and my Target card 5-percent discount.
If Hasbro truly wanted collector interest, there should have been something enticing to this set. Nostalgia is not a tangible item. The repacks and minor repaints make it skippable. The painfully-cloying press release last week only exacerbates this issue. Hasbro is thinking big picture and wants to guarantee Target picks up all the packs it has planned, but needs these to do well. Judging from the fact that I saw four in one store today -- all banged up -- I don't know.

Visited Target, couldn't find this anywhere. The endcap was down, because I couldn't find that either. There was a considerable assortment of everything out - TVC, SL, TCW, Geonosis sets... the 9-pack was the only thing missing, though.

I've seen these considerably dinged, dented, and even mangled as well...  So I'll echo what Captain Piett said.

I also truly am glad nothing is new about these.  It's $50 saved to me.  If each pack had one new figure (or "like a new head/gear"), one repaint or something, and one repack, I'd probably not gripe much with the purchase.  If the whole set only had one or two figures you really wanted though, and then a whole lot more of the same, I'd be irked I think.

One of my Targets had 18 of these on the shelf this morning and I actually saw a kid pull one off screaming to mommy that he wanted it for Christmas.  Really?  cool I guess, but ya....This is still a long box of suck IMO.

I'd think that a lot of kids missed out on most of these figures... Hasbro repacks the hell out of certain figures in Legends and Battle Packs - but these?  Not so much.  It's a good opportunity for some variety in a child's OT ranks of figures, and at a decent price.

I was at Target today and they were jammed picked with these on two end caps! I saw someone take one off of the endcap and they all toppled on him, it was a funniest videos moment.  The box is so awkward I think it's hurting the sale of these. All of the ones I came across have been in great shape.

If this goes on clearance I would pick it up to get the darker FX-7 and the Lando. I could use another of him and at least the bulk of the set are army builders. So far this looks like it's flopping when compared to their other exclusive SW items. The second series of Geo packs, Vintage boxed vehicles, Hoth packs and the BP's seemed to be almost cleared out.

Yeah, clearance I may even cave on one just to have all the extras...  TIE Pilots, FX-7's, Hoth Rebels, the freaky alien Bespin Guard (who you can put Needa's head on, and it looks good, to make a generic white Bespin Guard...  That's your tip of the day folks), and others are ok to have extras of.

But only on clearance.  It's just not interesting to me otherwise.

I am half way to swallowing this pill.  I purchased but never opened my Bespin Luke, so if I wanted to I could exchange him for another figure later at Target.  I don't have that Lando, and he is one of the few figures still on my "to do list".  And, while not on my radar (somehow I overlooked him), I don't believe I have an FX-7 in my collection.

So, I am left with really only needing 3 out of the 9.  I am an opener so packaging doesn't mean anything to me (I do keep cardbacks).  So, even if I figure maximum normal retail cost of a Vintage figure at $8 that still only puts this set as worth $24 to me.

So even if Target discount this by $5 I still don't think it will be enough for me to bite on it.  So at this point I am still going to wait it out and see what happens.

The big kick in the crotch of this set to me is the Lando - I do really want him because I wasn't collecting during VOTC, but I can wait longer.

ps - during what line was the FX-7 last released?

Yakface has a report that a local MN has this on a Temporary Price Markdown for $35.99. If that's the case I will bite. I think my earlier observation of this rotting may be more widespread on this. I will try to stop by Target to confirm if my local Target has this on TPR also.

Update - Hat tip to - JediMoses, he sent the report to Yakface.

that sounds nice - hopefully true.  I could see myself spending the $12 extra bucks (in my scenario above) for the repacks.

FX-7 did come from the POTJ line, at the tail end of it, and as far as clearances go, I would suspect after Christmas they'd start looking at moving them out fast.  Just my guess.  It's not that far away, but it seems like something they'd want rid of fast because it's a space-hog.

New Rebel Commando's head works, too. And makes another goateed trooper. Yay!  :P

Who can't have enough of those guys, right?

If Needa's fits, I'd also guess that the Hoth Rebel heads, Keyan Farlander's head (and possibly other Pilots), and the AT-AT Commander's heads would all fit the Bespin Guard as well.  Since the freaky alien is the only white guy in skin tone though, you'd have to use him or do some repainting.

I actually don't care for how the neck post "leans forward" on the Endor Rebel figure.  I've done a few simple head swaps so far, and that's the only drawback really.  I kind of wish the legs were a tad more versatile too.  Still, I am glad they upgraded this guy... I don't think he's going to anywhere close to as cool as the upcoming Fleet Trooper however.

I have only come across this TPR at one store in MN.  It is one of the upgraded standard Targets, not a SuperTarget.  I have noticed that these stores seem to follow a different pattern on prices.  This particular store is very odd.

I checked my local Target still full price and still loaded with them. It looks like they did not even sell one in the last two days. They are also jam packed with the ROTS wave. I found a lone Rebela and Klaatu which I grabbed for customs.

I have been using the Rebel Commando a lot and I gave the extra Rifles to my other Hoth Rebls so now my army is finally properly equipped with the latest gear. I also gave the new camo packs to my Saga2 Endor Rebels. It makes them look more SWs.

None of these to be found at my nearest Target, so I don't know if they got them in and sold out, never got them, or simply never put them out (this Target, it wouldn't surprise me.  They have missed advertised sales on stuff that they had in the back room and wouldn't put out for some reason, or even pull during the sale).

I still do not think they sold one set at my local Target. They are cleaned out with everything else. I have a feeling I will find this on clearance.

I'm sort of hoping/waiting for a clearance as well.  I would like to have one, but I don't want it "$50 bad".  If we saw that price cut to $36, or a clearance even better after Christmas, I'd probably bite.  Our closest store seems to have sold some, but has had about 7-8 on the endcap/shelf thingy for a couple weeks now.  They may start drying up though, because I've noticed that basically everything else SW-related is disappearing quickly in these last two weeks before Christmas.

My local Target still has 25+ another Target had about 12. It's the same every time I look. I am with Brian, I kinda want it but not at $50. I really want it for the darker FX-7 and I can use as new Lando as my old one has some loose parts. The bulk of this set is made up of army builders so it makes it easier to swallow. This is the only item I am holding out for clearance.

I've been to some stores with only 1 or 2 of these out, and another store had them falling off the shelves.  I don't know if the distribution on these is being handled oddly or what.  I thought Target's distribution was relatively even though, at least on store exclusives.

Ours has had the same 7 or 8 on the shelf since they were put out.  A handful sold initially, but the rest seem to have hung on for the time being.  I still wouldn't mind grabbing one if they go on sale or clearance, but we'll see.  I would think that they would sell faster with Christmas shoppers, but I think price (although a good value for the number of figures, particularly to kids or new collectors) and maybe the sheer size of it (awkward to carry/wrap) may keep some casual customers away.  For a kid that doesn't have all these figures already though, it would be a pretty nice gift.  Nice mix of figures, even if it isn't Clone Wars or PT that they might be more familiar with.

This late into December... and my 2 local Targets STILL haven't put this out. I visited 1 of the 2 Targets today, and these 9-packs are nowhere to be found - not on the endcap, which for some reason is separated from the main Star Wars aisle. It bothers me how there's a whole two shelves (out of 3? 4?) in the endcap that are completely empty, and only one of the shelves is filled, with TCW figures and those "Hostage Crisis" packs. It's like they never got any shipments.

I think these tri packs offer slight paintjob or some sculpt variations to the figures; like wider or closer stance, applications of shades, wash color, perhaps silver to the guns.
What I suppose is that the boxes who wonīt be sold on Holidays would be opened to sellers of loose figures, perhaps by some speculators who pretend to raise the price of most wanted figures.

In a brief analysis I can tell, the speculators canīt won much profit from opening these boxes, cause they arenīt getting an extra piece like a build a droid part, a coin a slide; which they currently separate from the loose figure they sold.
They always sell the figure with its basic weapons, so let's imagine how they can made profit of the card.

In time of global crisis, when bussiness demands creativity, Hasbro strives to sell trhree figures at once, so the success depends on how desirable the character depictions are. Is very possible that in a short time Hasbro relaunches the  kenner baggies of the eighties, for figures they want to sell at a more economic price.

This would be appealing if baggies figures were sold at a considerable reduction from the current price, and if in the shops, toystores the speculators wonīt interfere spoiling the offer.

I was stunned to find this today on clearance for $24.98...I kid you not. They only had 1 left but it was in good shape. I had to walk away because it's not part of my personal focus and the unwieldy box size would make secondary shipping next to impossible.

Still, I thought this was a great deal and hopefully you guys that are interested will find these marked down similarly near you. I didn't stop at any other Targets so no idea if this was a regional thing or just a fluke.
