Title: 2005 Holiday Figure - Darth Vader
Post by: Diddly on August 10, 2005, 04:43 PM
According to THIS (http://www.galactichunter.com/absolutenm/templates/full_article_template_1.asp?articleid=4769&zoneid=2) GH article, we'll be getting another holiday figure, this year a holiday version of Vader.

I'm expecting this to be crap, just like all the other Holiday figures. Also, I'm a bit Vader-ed out after the past year, so there's another reason for me to pass.

Anybody else agree?

Sorry, IMO Vader made the whole star wars saga, look it(the saga) was always about him (not whiney Luke). Vader rules-he's the type of badass you can grow to love. I can't think of a better figure to finally make out a holiday fig.

You know what? I'll bet he'll look good right next to my Hallmark vader "talking" ornament that just was released.

If this makes you sick..well then....oh well, you asked.

Eh, I don't know.

The problem with the holiday figures is that they are mostly online exclusive (sans the 3PO set no one found) and tend to be rehashes with a few small resin pieces.

I don't own any of them and don't plan on buying Vader (even though he's one of my favorite characters).

Maybe I'll buy the entire Holiday collection off of ebay someday assuming I find them for less than SRP (shipping included).   8)

I like these as well.  I'm looking forward to seeing what the Holiday Vader will look like.

I'll probably get one for my nephew as well since he thinks Darth Vader is really cool.  ;D

I will definately be buying this. I have the R2/3PO set and the Yoda one. Never got around to getting the Jawa Holiday set, but I'm working on it.

I don't have either of them, cause I always seem to be out of money around Christmas time, but depending on how it looks I'll probably pick it up. The other 3 have looked pretty cool so far.

I'm curious to see what they'll do with this. Santa Vader? ??? Christmas on Mustafar? :-[

Like the first three, I'll get it if it's a fun item and pass if it stinks. I enjoyed the droids and Yoda, but the Jawas blew. Wouldn't pick that one up on clearance.

All of the others have been based on Ralph McQuarrie's art:

2004 Jawas:

2003 Yoda:

2002 R2-D2 & C-3PO:

So I assumed they would continue the pattern and use a McQuarrie Christmas print as their "inspiration" again.  Problem is, I can't find a Vader version.   :-\

Nothing says holiday cheer like a murderer of women, children, and Tuskens immortalized in plastic. Make it a rehash on top of it, and call it a day. Thanks, Hasbro.

Sometimes its better to do nothing than do the stupid thing.

Since part of my family's Star Wars collection is a small tree with all of the Hallmark Ornaments, these Hasbro SW X-Mas sets make for a nice display addition around the base of the tree.

I loved the C-3P0/R2-D2, Yoda and Jawa Sets. This one I'm a bit puzzled by since I thought for sure we'd either get that Ewok one this year since it could really be a modified Teebo figure with a base and bag full of presents.

I don't know if Vader ever was on a Lucasfilm company x-mas card. Remember, one of the key parts to the sets so far is that you get a replica of the x-mas card too.

I wonder if instead of doing a card from the past, this will actually be the one and only time that the Hasbro x-mas exclusive and the Lucasfilm x-mas card are in synch. Since this was the year of ROTS and the year of Vader, perhaps GL commissioned the Vader card for x-mas 2005 and as an added bonus Hasbro is getting the design early enough to make an action figure based on it and in effect, since we get the Lucasfilm card w/the toy, it's like GL is sending out the card to all of the fans as well.

Just a thought (and a dream from the land of "perfect", I know).

I haven't been able to aquire any of the Chrismas Star Wars figures so, unfortunately, I won't even bother trying in the future. These things are usually harder to come by than most exclusives. I've said it a million times before and I'll say it again, It's a shame Hasbro fails time and time again to put product in my hands that I would gladly pay to have.

I have not collected the holiday figures, even though I have found them. I have never been thrilled by them except for Yoda. However, this thread has given me a new idea to collect! SW Christmas art/cards!   I will say that I would love to see a Padme Christmas Tree! And finally, we found a reason for the creation of the Ewoks! May they glory in that role!

Well, don't get too excited about the new Holiday Vader.  He's in the latest Insider and he retails for $19.99 (SW Shop exclusive).  Seems to be quite a theme going on, eh?

And this is the best part - they have the Lava Vader sculpt pictured - not silver vac metalized but red vac metalized!  Verbiage claims that the final sculpt will vary.

As with past year editions, he will come with a festive base and card.

Pass.

When I saw the first prototype shots of the Lava Vader from Target, he was Red Vac Metal.

Hasbro wasn't lying when they said that the era of silver figures was over, but apparently they haven't given up on the vacuum-metallized exclusive figure concept just yet.

The JediDefender News Room has dug up some dirt on a planned Target exclusive for 2005 - Red Metallic Darth Vader.  No details yet on the how or when, but you can expect to add this guy to your collection sometime in 2005!  Watch for more details on this figure as we get closer to April 2nd!

I guess when Target changed their mind to get the "painted lava" Vader, Hasbro never ditched the red vac-metal idea... maybe it's the same prototype figure even?

Man...  It'd better be spiffy or I'm passing.  I like the McQuarrie-esque ones just because of the material they're spawned from, but not what this sounds like.  Forget that Vader figure then.

He's up on StarWarsShop:

2005 Holiday Vader (http://shop.starwars.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=104370&ReferrerID=CJADBN-00001)

"$14.99"

"red metallic finish (not vac-metallized, as previously reported)"

"Additionally, a figure-exclusive holiday greeting card is also included, this time illustrated with a whimsical scene of Vader building a "snowtrooper""

"PROTOTYPE PICTURED. FINAL PRODUCT SUBJECT TO CHANGE"

I love the cardback, but I wish they'd put even half that much creativity into the figure. :-\

Title: Re: 2005 Holiday Figure - Vader?
Post by: Pete_Fett on September 13, 2005, 10:34 PM
Well - the Holiday Themed figures have officially jumped the shark.

With all of the other choices (Padme as an X-Mas tree being a great one) it seems to me that this one really takes the cake as a half-a$sed effort.

The original X-Mas card artwork is great, and if the figure had recreated that (i.e. Vader in his regular black "making" a Stormtrooper Snowman) then this would have been one of the better sets.

The figure does not match the card art! So what's the point? I thought the entire point of this series was that we were getting action figures based on the Lucasfilm X-Mas cards. No where on that card do I see (a) a RED Vader; (b) Black star-scape; (c) A Star Destroyer Bridge; and  (d) a wreath. Yet the combination of figure, base and packaging feature ALL of these things.

I'm sorry there is nothing that could have stopped them from packaging Vader with a Stormtrooper snow-man just like this:

There just ISN'T. If you look at the packaging with Yoda and then the Jawas, it's identical just different artwork - so why couldn't this one have been in the C-3PO/R2 Packaging with the background from the original card? I can answer that myself really - LAZINESS or how about CHEAPNESS. I would have gladly paid another $10-$15 to get a two pack of "action" figures that imitated the original card. Also, I really don't want ONE of the holiday sets to be carded while the others are all in the snow-globe like packaging. They don't even have a sense of consistency for crying out loud!

*grrrrr*

If they'd made a Vader figure building a SnowTrooper-Man, I'd actually like it and it would match the rest of the line made to resemble the cards...  Since it does not, it's neither here nor there to me, and I'm gonna pass.

If effort were put forth though to copy the card I'd be all into it.

PASS. At the risk of sounding repetitive, since this has nothing to do with the LFL Card, I have no interest in a Red Vader.

I actually really like the card art. I really like look of the Christmas SD. The cardback art is really nice too. But card art isn't enough to make me buy it if it is this overpriced. Like the SWS "Stealth" Clone, it has really nice packaging, but I'll pass on the over-priced piece of **** figure.

What a piece of JUNK!!!!!

read the upper left corner of the card front:

NOTE: To best preserve paint on figure, leave figure inside of package. To prevent paint from chipping, carefully remove figure from package and keep in a safe place.

Don't get it wet
Don't feed it after midnight
Don't get it in the sun

Why don't they included a haz-mat suit and biohazard disposal unit while they're at it!  AND what ever you do DON"T LOOK AT IT!!!! Jezus

I'll still buy it  :D

Post by: Brian on September 14, 2005, 09:18 AM
This is pretty ridiculous.  As others have mentioned, if it had been modeled after the card art and been a Vader building a "snow" stormtrooper, I would have been interested.  With this red, old, Vader figure...and with money being tight anyways right now, I'm passing.  The OTC-ish cardback is kind of neat though, much better than the figure itself :).

So far the Holiday figure thing had hit 3 for 3, a dud was just a matter of time.

I'm going to have to pass on it and ifany of my relatives tries to give it to me for the holidays, well, one less gift to buy next year, jajaja.

Well I might have bought this if the price was not so insane.  I guess everyone at Hasbro go together and said "For now on every exclusive figure we make will be automatically priced at $14.99."

Honestly even if it was really cool looking I am not blowing $14.99 on new figs anymore.  Unless it's something I have been wanting for eons like a Tonnika Sister.  Oooops, I better shut up or that is exactly what Hasbro will charge for a real figure.  Oh wait I am already to late.

I feel like a complete tool because I preordered two of these last night. I feel dirty and taken advantage of, knowing full well Hasbro knows I'm a lowly crack whore who will pay what is asked and take whatever they serve up to get my figure fix.

This year has been a wonderful exploration into how much **** they can dish out before people rebel.

A question for anyone that ordered this guy...  Has your pre-order been changed?   :-\

I've been getting e-mails from people pointing out that the pre-order date is now January, but my pre-order still has a December 9th ship date stuck to it.

Upon investigating, it seems like:

- if you pre-ordered the Holiday Vader while he had the 104370 product number, you may still get yours in time for the holidays (ship date = Dec 9th)

- if you pre-order one now with the 104615 product number, you will have to wait until January to get your Vader

This is another one of those figures that I should get to be complete on the holiday issues, but I just can't bring myself to order the damn thing.  It's just way too much like they had extra red paint after the Target Vader and decided to slap it on this guy instead.  Voila, instant Christmas figure.

None of the Christmas figures are really all that great, but at least the others were based on some artwork rather than avoidance of paying royalties.

My listing still says "In Stock", but I have not yet recieved a shipping notice.  I just attributed it to laziness... the same thing happened with the Covert Clones - it took them 4-5 days to ship after they were "in stock" even though I ordered within hours of the original posting.

Hopefully the ship notice will come int he next day or two...  :-\

Mine showed up yesterday, and I think I ordered sometime on the first day of availability, though I know I didn't exactly rush to get my order in.

I haven't even been interested in the figure enough to bother opening the shipping carton. Now that I hear it described as officially cheesy, I have serous doubts that he'll see the light of day any time soon. I don't want to bring shame to the collection.  ;)

I got my shipping notice today... according to the tracking number they should arrive on December 20th, so they should still get here for Christmas (barely  :P).

After months of this being out I just saw it for the first time in person. :-X

What a cop-out. The first 3 in the series were terrific. I actually passed on him.......

I'm almost embarrased to say this now, but I fought off the temptation to buy one before, but now (of cuorse) I feel like my collection is incomplete, and I need one of these. Anyone have an extra?  :-\
