Marvel's other 2014 movie: Guardians of the Galaxy, sounds like it is confirmed (and will be announced at SDCC):
http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/JoshWildingNewsAndReviews/news/?a=62584 (http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/JoshWildingNewsAndReviews/news/?a=62584)
They also have Cap coming in March of that year, and the Amazing Spidey 2 (from Sony) also from the Marvel character stable. I never thought this was a property that would see a summer blockbuster movie :).
-
Why? GOTG seems like a really obscure selection...I see now why they keep making toys of these things.
CGI Rocket Raccoon? That does not sound good.
Where the hell is that Darkchylde movie John Carpenter has been working on?
-
Odd choice but i am intrigued.
-
Maybe now people will buy that GotG Battle Pack that's been clogging up my Target's shelves for a couple of months.

http://www.joblo.com/movie-news/jason-momoa-cast-as-drax-in-guardians-of-the-galaxy
First Andy Dwyer as Starlord now Khal Drogo as Drax? GOTG just got more awesome. Looking forward to seeing who they pick as the voice of Rocket Raccoon.
-
Last month they were talking to Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler... (http://buzzhub.wordpress.com/2013/01/23/adam-sandler-and-jim-carrey-in-talks-to-voice-rocket-raccoon-in-guardians-of-the-glaxy/)
Sandler wouldn't be my first choice, though he'd probably do OK. Carrey has a lot more range.
Personally I'd go with Bobcat Goldthwait. That'd be unreal. Or if you want to go pure professional - Billy West.
Momoa is a brilliant choice for Drax.
-
Bautista is Drax
http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/JoshWildingNewsAndReviews/news/?a=75782
-
Would have preferred Khal Drogo, but since Drax doesn't speak all that much and just beats the **** out of people, I suppose Bautisa could work.
-
Well, wrestlers DO make great actors...
Oh wait, no they don't.
Sigh. :(
-
Wrestlers are great enough actors to fool millions of fans to think their sport is real. ;)
I wouldn't call The Rock a "great" actor - but he's awesome at being a bad-ass. I haven't had the chance to see Man with the Iron Fists yet so I can't say anything about Bautisa's performance. If all he needs to do is be intimidating and bring the pain, I don't see how it'll be a stretch for him. I mean, how many other misses has Marvel had casting-wise? I trust them.

+1

Funny you mention the Rock, he's supposedly lobbying for a role in Star Wars VII.
-
Darth Limestone?
-
Now that it'll be a studio movie, I expect a lot of actors to be lobbying for a role in the VII.

Walking Dead alum joins Guardians of the Galaxy (http://www.deadline.com/2013/04/michael-rooker-guardians-of-the-galaxy-casting-marvel-movie/)
You know - I never put 2 and 2 together that he was in JFK.

He should be in The Expendables part whatever.

no, no and no. HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER FTW!
"It's either you...or them."
Honorable mention goes to his role as the homosexual man-rapist in Sea of Love. Super disturbing.
he's gonna bring a lot of creep factor to GOTG...
-
Glenn Close and now Benicio Del Toro added to Guardians:
http://www.deadline.com/2013/06/benicio-del-toro-takes-lead-role-in-marvels-guardians-of-the-galaxy/
Shaping up to be a serious Oscar caliber cast!
-
Yeah, this cast is really turning out to be very interesting. I'm curious to see how the movie shapes up. I'm reading the current Guardians comic, but honestly, prior to a couple years ago, I knew next to nothing about this team. It will be interesting to see how this one does at the box office.
-
Holy crap, Chris Pratt! You got ripped!
After watching this dude for years on Parks & Rec, I had no idea he had such potential for pompitude.
Truly, there is hope for us all.
-
Vin Diesel to play Groot in Guardians (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/63663)
Probably not the role anybody was expecting.

That's actually a fantastic selection. Have you seen Groot when he gets angry?
-
He's going to play a talking tree?
-
I always thought he was a wooden actor.
-
That's still a pretty big leap. I mean, sure, maybe, but just because Vin Diesel posted a pic of Groot on his Facebook wall? I'd imagine if it were true and that we're any sort of a sneak or leak or whatever, we'd have heard confirmation by now.
-
Confirmation (http://herocomplex.latimes.com/movies/guardians-of-the-galaxy-vin-diesel-talks-possible-groot-role/#/0) ;)
-
Yeah...okay. That's a hell of a lot closer.
But jeez. Weird.
-
It's the crazy gravel voice - perfect for an Ent!
-
I like the decision.
-
Bradley Cooper close to signing on as Rocket Raccoon. (http://www.deadline.com/2013/08/bradley-cooper-guardians-of-the-galaxy-marvel-movie-casting/)
I probably would have opted for a professional voice actor rather than a celebrity, but I can't argue much against Cooper. He's emotive and quite funny.

1st trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy.
Love it. The general public might not know who the **** these a-holes are, but hopefully with future trailers and a big marketing push (likely centered around Rocket and Groot), it'll do decent business. Definitely has a Star Wars feel.
And the lead singer of Mouserat is perfectly cast.
-
I am beyond pumped for this, and I think the trailer looks pretty great. I so hope that the movie does well, because I'd like to see more of this universe going forward as well. I've really gotten into the Guardians comics (past and present) in the past couple years, and am so happy that we're getting a movie. Time for Guardians to get its own thread here too :).
-
I'm digging it a lot. First time through I was thrown for a loop - didn't expect anything so laid back. But the second viewing really hooked me.
I love how the GUI on the cage obscured Star-Lord's middle finger. First time through I thought they just blurred it out for the trailer. "OBSCENE GESTURE: IMMINENT!" That's comedy gold right there.
-
I have no concept of who these Guardians of the Galaxy are... I'll certainly go see it as I really like all the Marvel movies. The trailer certainly made this a bit "campier" than even some of the current Marvel movies. Hopefully it all comes together and works. Not sure about a gun toting racoon, ::)
-
Funny, the Raccoon and the Tree are the best characters IMHO.
-
This reminds me of The Fifth Element, where the creators are self aware of some of the ridiculousness, but they are happy to own it.
-
Really looking forward to this! Trailer looks great. Does seem a bit campier than the other Marvel stuff, but that's okay. Hopefully they will make it all work.
-
It feels like the Green Lantern.
-
Gotta love that you've got people like John C Reilly and Peter Serafinowicz (the original voice of Darth Maul, BTW) playing bit parts in this movie!
-
It feels like the Green Lantern.
Yeah, except better actors + a fun plot + lots of humor + possibly a good movie.
-
First poster is out now as well:
There are also a series of short "intro" videos for each member of the Guardians, and you can hear a tiny bit of Rocket's voice (as done by Bradley Cooper):
http://www.newsarama.com/20382-guardians-of-the-galaxy-director-james-gunn-reveals-one-of-team-s-biggest-enemies-that-they-ll-never-face-on-screen.html (http://www.newsarama.com/20382-guardians-of-the-galaxy-director-james-gunn-reveals-one-of-team-s-biggest-enemies-that-they-ll-never-face-on-screen.html)
-
It feels like the Green Lantern.
Yeah, except better actors + a fun plot + lots of humor + possibly a good movie.
I'd also say that the material lends itself to this tone more than Green Lantern did. I hate when I hear this gripe, but I think it fits with GL. Too much CGI.
-
Agreed. They should have found a way to film in space with real aliens. They could have at least used a real raccoon. ::)
I think the movie looks campy fun. The previews remind me a lot more of Firefly or Army of Darkness than Green Lantern, but to each their own.
-
I am really pumped for it and I hope we get another infinity gem.
-
There's a very strong camp factor at work in the trailer. That's pretty clear by tagging out the trailer with Blue Swede's "Hooked on a feeling". And if that wasn't obvious enough, then casting Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Starlord makes it abundantly clear that this is a movie that isn't taking itself completely seriously. Pratt's known more for his comedic chops than for being an action star... Zero Dark Thirty excepted.
Going into this I had ZERO exposure to Guardians of the Galaxy. And I was wondering if this would be the point where I might need to tap out with the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. But I think that after seeing the trailer I'm more likely to go see this movie.
-
The new trailer is up! Holeeeeee shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit! 8) ;D

This is my top most anticipated movie of 2014.
-
This will be my movie of the summer. And I laughed my a$$ off when Rocket did the crotch grab!!! Gonna be a wild ride....
-
I was far less impressed with the second trailer, but definitely some cool action shots. Should be a fun ride.
-
The new trailer has gotten me that much more interested in checking out this movie. I have zero knowledge of the comic going into this, but the film definitely looks worth checking out. I'm guessing that the shadowy figure was Ronan the Accuser. No sign of Thanos, though. Hmmmm.
-
I think Thanos will be there pulling the strings, but Ronin is the big bang for this one.
-
Loved the new trailer, my most anticipated movie of this year as well. This is another one of those "I can't believe we're getting a Guardians of the Galaxy movie" type of moments that we seem to be getting more and more as these movies expand. I didn't honestly know much about this team at all until a few years back (during the Annihilation stuff in the comics), and sort of got hooked beyond that. Can't wait to see this. I've also got the feeling that Thanos is more a "puppet master" type role in this, in that Ronan will be reporting/working for him, and they'll continue to build towards the big showdown in Avengers 3 (hopefully with the Guardians teaming up or something as well).

Me too. Me and a couple of folks are driving forty-five minutes one-way to see this seventeen-minute trailer. Not that terribly excited about the film, but I have a feeling watching it with a bunch of friends will make the difference.

I've been reading about the footage today, and it sounds like it is pretty universally praised. The new trailer is sweet (the music continues to be great), and I'm really counting down the days until this hits theaters. I never thought that in a year with a Spidey, Cap, X-Men, and Hobbit movie that this would be my most anticipated movie of 2014. Can't wait.
-
I went to the preview and I'll add to the accolades. It was hilarious and awesome. I'm certain I'll need to watch it twice to catch the dialogue I miss the first time from laughing.

I got my tickets for the Thursday night show - officially excited!
I decided I'm going to try and hit the trifecta with this flick like I did with Pacific Rim: 2D, 3D, IMAX.

Super hyped about this one, yet I've refrained from seeing anything but two trailers. And that Guardians of the Star Wars Galaxy mashup poster? Need. That. On. A. Shirt. Now! ;D

I have my ticket for the late show tonite... ******* it on! ;D

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Biggest August Pre-Seller in History (http://variety.com/2014/film/news/guardians-of-the-galaxy-biggest-august-pre-seller-in-history-exclusive-1201271973/)
-
Isn't that great. In this time of worldwide premieres, GOTG will premier here in Holland on August 14 ::)
-
I'm glad I don't have to wait another two weeks, but in the grand scheme that's not too bad. Used to be it could take months for a new release to hit international territories.
-
Just got back, totally lived up to expectations, funnest movie I've seen in a long time. Cast was excellent, as well as the soundtrack. I hope this is a smash home run for them.
It seemed like everyone at my showing was sort of mystified by the odd post-credits scene but it seemed pretty in line with the overall tenor of the film IMO. Never takes itself too seriously...
Can't wait to see it again!
-
Back from the flick & all I can say is buckle up, you're in for a ride! The wait was well worth it, they all played the parts well. Marvel nailed it! I have to see it again, never laughed so hard. I Am Groot! ;D
Marvel to DC... "On your left." :D
-
Stupid international releases, have to wait till next week....
-
Went to see it last and it was incredible. My favorite marvel so far. So much cosmic awesomeness.
-
Is Howard the Duck at the end of the movie?
-
SPOILERS!! :P
-
My nephew (he's 22) and I had tickets for the 7:30 showing, which was digital 2D. We liked it so much that we left the theater and immediately bought tickets for the 10:00 3D IMAX showing. Yeah, I know ... I suck. :D
-
Guardians did $11 million Thursday, best Thursday opening of 2014 (ahead of Cap 2).
Also this happened... (http://www.comicbookmovie.com/news/?a=104958)
-
Oh man, that is not even funny. I would have been irate!
I'm looking forward to hitting the IMAX for this, should be epic.
-
Saw it this afternoon, and loved it. One of my favorites, honestly, not just Marvel but of movies in general. Just the type of movie I enjoy with equal parts Star Wars and Marvel, hoping to see it a couple more times in theaters. So much good in there. My wife (and others in our theater) were sort of "what the?" with the credits scene as well, but I was proud when our daughter recognized what was going on (I won't go spoilery here).
-
Saw it last night... I liked it, but I didn't "love" it as I have a lot of the other Marvel flicks. I definitely want to see it again to form a better opinion though.
-
Saw it tonight, loved it tonight
I liked Cap2 better but it is on par with the Avengers and the first Cap and first 2 Iron Man movies. I get that there is some comparisons to Star Wars but the depth just isn't quite there for me. Absolutely loved Groot and Rocket and thei Han/Chewie thing

Looks like GotG brought in $94 million on its opening weekend. Just a million short of Cap2.
-
So I read that number yesterday in the earlier part of the day, then I went to a nearly sold out 8:30 PM showing.
Do they stop counting at some point in the weekend or were they just estimating?

They estimate Sunday (usually 15% to 20% less than Saturday) to get the $94 million for the press. Tonight they'll release the official numbers.

Don't I know it! My very first movie on the big screen was RotJ. It premiered in February 1984 ;D That'd mean I get to see EPVI in September 2016 :o ;D
-
I saw it today and loved it. I agree with Scott that Cap 2 is winner of the best film overall in this series though.
I've never read Guardians of the Galaxy, so I don't really know how true to the comics it was, but still had a lot of fun watching it!
-
I don't think anyone actually read the comic. It's too obscure kind of like Ant Man. Marvel must have had a lot of influence on this one's marketing. Disney usually screws up the marketing angle royally. Can you say John Carter or Frozen? Frozen did well without the stupid Oloff marketing while no one has a clue who John Carter is.
-
Actually GOTG rebooted a year and a half ago with these specific characters and it's been selling very well from what I understand. I haven't seen the movie, so not sure what liberties they've taken, but I'm sure things like the Nova-Corps are very different from what we get in the comics. From the previews, it does look to me like they got the character personalities right across the team, which is really what Marvel has been doing across all the Avengers stuff. If you get a macho Stark, boy scout Cap, Regal Thor, and a Wise-cracking Star Lord, you can make the link to the comics while changing the storyline all you want.
-
I think they've set themselves up awfully pretty for the Avengers/GotG/Thanos showdown in Avengers 3. Could be a 2+ billion dollar movie right there. GotG2 could end up being very ESB-like, with the heroes thoroughly defeated and then reaching out for help from Stark & Co.
-
Went again today, still loved it. Honestly, it may be a bit of the "newness" excitement right now, but I think this breaks my personal Top 10. It is definitely right up there with Avengers, Winter Soldier, and the original Iron Man as my favorite Marvel movies. The fact that it is this obscure property makes it all the more cool. I wasn't overly aware of a lot of these characters as a kid, but got into the cosmic stuff a bit more with the whole revival in the comics with Abnett/Lanning a few years back. This group is the one that really stuck with me, and it is so exciting to see them on the big screen (and in such a good movie as well). Hope to get to see it again in theaters, and the blu ray can't come soon enough :).
-

I actually dived right into the GotG comics a while ago. Just to get to know the characters and events. Admittedly, not the really old stuff, just the more recent stuff. Very entertaining and pretty dark sometimes too.
Ordered that Grootbacca/Rocket Solo shirt off Teefury and added that nice Bobakira shirt as well. Wrote them a funny e-mail, asking them to pretty-please get this shirt to me asap, so that I can wear it on the 15th or 16th :D
-
Fun movie...Loved it! I think that collector guy was from one of the after scene credits that completely confused me from one of the other Marvel movies.
I actually knew who the end credit guy was in this one :D
-
The Collector was in the post-credit scene in Thor 2.
-
I enjoyed the movie. And like a lot of other people I didn't have any previous exposure to the GotG comic. But the movie stood well on it's own and the characters were interesting. I may go back and see it again.
Seeing some of the big cosmic players in the Marvel Universe on screen like this was great. Without getting into spoiler details there were so many civilizations and individuals that got touched upon: Thanos, Ronan the Accuser, the Kree, Xandar and the Nova Corps, the Celestials, the Infinity Stones and the Collector. WHOA. That's a lot of Marvel cosmic territory to cover, but it got done without shoe-horning.
I really liked getting to see the Collector's museum. Obviously, there were the two characters that were seen in the post credits scene. But in the initial scenes I also noticed some other beings in the collection that we'd seen in previous movies, like a Chitauri as well as a Dark Elf.
And another thing that I noticed? On one of the ships there seemed to be some glyphs that resembled something we saw on television. Hmmm...
-
I saw this and liked it, but I don't know if I missed something in conversation or what (I do have a slight hearing problem), so I might have to see it again. But it left me with questions... maybe it's something in the comics that didn't translate. I guess for me, it'd be cool to see some more background stories of Rocket/Groot, Drax and Gamora.
-
saw this last night with my 10 year old girl and 6 year old boy and they loved it. Of course their favorite scene was near the end when baby Groot was dancining in the pot. And unfortunately my lil guy was about to pee his pants cuz it was such a long movie for him so we missed the end credit scenes. :'(
But in all i loved it, VERY funny and i'm glad i went in not knowing anything about these characters so no preconceptions or comparisons to comic book versions. The part i loved the most was how much my kids enjoyed it. There was no squirming in the seats or falling asleep, lots of laughs from them.
-
Caught this last night and thought it was great. Definitely fits in with the rest of the MCU movies. However, this leaves me wanting another movie in the space between now and Avengers 2!

Well deserved. I finally saw it over the weekend and it has to be one of my top five favorites of all Tim. Great action, solid story, fun. Characters. I loved it.
-
Loved every second of it. Man, what a fun ride! Saw it twice and definitely want to see it a third time.
The whole gang worked great together. Loved Groot's "Hulk vs. Loki" moment (that face!), Michael Rooker was just brilliant as Yondu, what a guy! And that face of Ronan when the infinity stone gets knocked off his hammer.... priceless ;D Heck, everything was great, hahaa!
I have had the Awesome Mix Tape Vol. 1 in my car for a month now (on CD, don't have a cassette player in my car... yet), such an awesome soundtrack to the movie. I want to change that into a Tarantino-esque soundtrack, with soundclips from the movie in between the tracks. Already found a few, but I'll download a torrent of the movie and try to rip the sound of that.

This is good... very good.

NEW Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Trailer - WORLD PREMIERE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duGqrYw4usE)
-
Cool. I liked the first trailer a lot more, but nice to see the new footage.
-
I also liked the first one more, but all about this movie.
-
Saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 this evening.
I actually enjoyed it more than the first one, don't want to say much more than that as there's very little you can say about the movie that wouldn't spoil some aspect of it in one way or another. The battle with the big creature seen in the trailers is the opening scene and needless to say, just like with the first movie, the way they worked in music and dancing during this scene was a great way to kick off the movie.
-
Agreed. This was awesome! Could have died laughing. There was a whole range of emotions in this one. I had an issue with one part of the plot but it was resolved nicely. End credits are worth it.
All I can say is, I am Groot!
-
Saw it today and it's a fantastic addition to the Marvel CU. Also, there are three post credit scenes.

I saw it three times over the weekend. Totally awesome.
There were a couple things I thought were a bit too over the top. Defying physics for the sake of humor. And I don't understand why those pillars started rising to the surface other than the story needed some means of transport at that moment. But those are just a minor niggles out of 2+ hours of joy.

Saw it today and it's a fantastic addition to the Marvel CU. Also, there are three post credit scenes.
5 actually.
Drax getting the arrow
Original GotG
Adam Warlock
Teenage Groot
Stan Lee / Watchers

I caught the 3D opening night, pretty awesome all around, did not feel let down at all. That said, I don't think it topped the first one...the humor felt forced too often, especially at the beginning, and sort of took you out of the moment at times.
Kurt was freaking money though, and Sly was strong too. I liked Mantis and thought the whole Nebula arc was really well handled. Loved the Warlock tease, and the Watchers too.
Seemed like they never really explained why Ego killed the Mom. Did he do that to all of them?
Shouldn't he have known there were other Celestials out there wandering the universe? They showed the head of one in the first movie. Maybe he just wanted one he could control?

Seemed like they never really explained why Ego killed the Mom. Did he do that to all of them?
Ego said it, and unlike other times in the movie where he was duplicitous to Peter, I think when he was "coming clean", he was being 100% honest when he said that he had been to Earth to visit Meredith 3 times and he knew if he came back a 4th, he would never want to leave, so to avoid the temptation of ever coming back to Earth, he put the tumor into her head. When he also told Peter why he sent Yondu to get him instead of coming for him himself, that was, I believe, a half truth - he genuinely didn't want to go back to an Earth where there was no Meredith, but he used that as the excuse to cover up the fact that he was having Yondu traffic all of his progeny across the galaxy.
Also, I think when it came to the other children he had sired, he appeared to those females of other species in a body that matched that species. When he told Peter that he chose the "perfect form" that was Ego's way of saying that whenever he visited a planet he chose the form to "perfectly" match the inhabitants of that planet and once there he would find a mate, plant his seed (both re-productively AND to put that pod thing on the surface of the planet) and leave.

That was my take on the tumor as well. That and having her die before Peter was kidnapped would be something of a mercy in his mind versus her thinking/knowing space guys took her son, and Ego was likely involved. I feel like that's why the Ravagers come get Peter immediately after she dies. Ego talks about the insignificance of life compared to his immortality, so not surprising that he would just end her if he's not coming back.
We saw it Friday on the IMAX 3-D screen and it was pretty awesome. I did feel a spark of let down versus the first one, but I think it's hard to capture that magic in a bottle twice. I read a review this weekend with similar thoughts - it's funnier than most movies and better written than most movies and more entertaining than most movies, but it isn't the original. I think the group is also at their best when they all play off each other and having them spread out for most of the movie hurt that dynamic. That said, it was still the best movie I've seen this year by far. I think I laughed a lot more through this one too. I'm glad I didn't read anything about the movie in advance - seeing Sly and later the original Guardians was a nice surprise.
Without throwing out spoilers, I loved references to Hasslehoff and Mary Poppins, Baby Groot and his inability to follow directions (nice play on how we can't understand him), Howard the Duck and Stan Lee cameos, Pretty much anything Drax says ("you're disgusting"), Kurt Russell (who does not look 66), Trash Panda, and Rocket's all too obvious winking. Mantis was a nice addition to the cast as well.
The end credits were fun too. The extra scenes were great, but they had some other little bits of animation through all of it as well. If you watch closely, some of the lines throughout the credits just say "I AM GROOT" then change to the actual name after a few seconds. Did anyone spot Goldblum's Grandmaster in one of the picture bubbles? Not even in the Guardians movie, but a nice link to Thor's upcoming flick.

Yea, I caught both of those during the credits roll as well. Its funny how Marvel has created a way that everyone stays until the last blip of the "reel" is finished.

Saw it with the boys this weekend. Not as good as the first one, but still relatively entertaining. Agreed the movie is at its best when they're all together, so splitting them up halfway through kind of hurt the last half of the movie.

James Gunn has been fired from GotG Vol 3 after some crass 10 year old tweets were dredged up by alt-right trolls. They have been a favorite target of Gunn on social media. But they went after Gunn in earnest and Disney has disavowed him.
-
To be fair, Nick, he was making “jokes” about pedophilia and having sex with his kids....who thinks stuff like that is ok?
-
The tweets were not defensible. But James Gunn's past work for Troma would have raised some concern, and that was well before he got the gig to direct GotG. It bears repeating: these were TWEETS. Were they in poor taste? That's not in question. For his part, Gunn has owned up to that social media content as him attempting to be very deliberately shocking at the time, and that he's a different person now. But let's also look at the broader context.
There are some in Hollywood who have become very vocally critical of the current administration. James Gunn is among those people. He has regularly engaged much of the Trump faithful and taken them to task.
Enter alt-right troll Mike Cernovich. He was one of the central figures in dredging up old social media content of James Gunn and pushed for him to be fired. And it bears examining that Cernovich was one of the proponents of the bogus pizza-gate conspiracy theory. There is a litany of Cernovich's documented despicable rhetoric and bad behavior. ACTUAL rape allegations, for one. Propogating a conspiracy that led to a gunman shooting up a pizza place in Washington. And what consequences has he suffered for that? And are we taking his motives into context? Word is that he is now targeting another entertainment figure who has been openly critical of Trump: Michael Ian Black.
Some of the Guardians cast has come to Gunn's defense. Dave Bautista, for one, has stated that he is not okay with James Gunn being fired. They regard him very well personally and judge him for who he is on the set and in their personal interactions with him.
There's more to this that just some tasteless tweets.
-
Hopefully, Disney will bring in Tiaka Waititi from Thor Ragnarok. I liked GotG2, but it was pretty formulaic and they just amped up what was good about the first one.
-
So, in one breath you're saying that what was tweeted was inexcusable and in the other you're minimizing it because they're just tweets. Versus what? Does that format of communication make comments less relevant or hurtful than something said on stage or in an interview? Probably not in an era when the president mostly communicates over tweets. And quite honestly, I bet the reach for social media is far beyond whatever other medium would have made this more offensive in your mind. There's zero difference in how or where you write this stuff. If he had written the comments on a bar napkin that was made public, the reaction would be the same.
This is a huge gray area that the country is struggling with right now. If you say or do something racist/sexist/not-PC right now, you're immediately kicked to the curb. Its not even up for debate. See Rosanne Barr. I hate that show, but think of all the cast and the hundreds of people who work on the set, production, etc. who are now out of a job because of a racist remark one person made. I don't know what the right answer is, but the results seem a bit overboard to me when you consider everyone involved. How about instead of firing people, you educate them and force them to do some kind of public service work to counter whatever hurtful messages they previously spewed? Seems like that would be a lot more beneficial to everyone.
Now, If you said or did something racist/sexist/not-PC decades ago, should the reaction be the same? What is the statue of limitations on this stuff? Never? Look how many people have had careers ruined by the Me Too Movement based on things they did or said 20 years ago. I'm not arguing that we should ignore past comments or actions. But if you said something stupid when you were 25 and haven't said it since, is that really a good reason to all but exile someone? Seems pretty extreme. It feels like we could be doing something more productive than just banishing people.
I think it all just comes down to marketing and liability these days. Every corporation or organization is making these decisions based on the potential for negative branding and potential lawsuits. If Gunn is allowed to stay and the media jumps on this, then the public image of the who movie could be tarnished. At best, that means lower ticket sales. At worst, you could see morons working to link Marvel or Disney to pedophilia. Then there's the risk of more stories coming forward, lawsuits, etc. For better or worse, most companies have determined that it's better to cut bait and run.
At my last job, we had ethics training every 6 months where it was made very clear that you can be fired for just the appearance of a potential ethics violation. Whether or not you were actually doing anything wrong was irrelevant - that's how sensitive these issues have become. And if you want to argue that this is an alt-right issue, probably best to bring that to the Sarlacc Pit. I personally don't think its conservatives who've created this era of extreme political correctness.
-
The difference to me is, using the examples Jman provided, is that if you makes racist jokes, it pretty much means you are a racist. But if you makes jokes about pedophilia, that does not make you a pedophile. It might imply poor taste, but no one really believes that guy is a pedophile. Not even Elon Musk. :D
I agree a lot of it is about optics and marketing etc. And I do think he got a raw deal.
-
So do we then disavow the writers of Airplane?
"Joey, have you ever seen a grown man naked?"
A joke about wanting to have sex with a young boy. It was a running gag. So were they pedophiles, or is it possible to write jokes about that without being one?
-
If you make racist jokes you are a racist, but jokes about kids means you're not a pedophile? If you make jokes about women are you sexist? If you joke about two guys are you homophobic? I get where you're going, but I really don't think you can't qualify someone as any of these based on a joke they may have made. The intention of a joke is to make someone smile or laugh and sometimes that is done in poor taste. But that's light years away from fondling women, not treating blacks as equals, or salivating over kids.
Anyway, back on topic - I was happy to see Jeremy Renner's "Got this feelin I need to SUITup soon..." post. I hope they have a good back story for Hawkeye's absence in Infinity War. I bought the Ant-Man house arrest story from Ant Man & Wasp, but Hawkeye doesn't have the benefit of a solo movie to explain his whereabouts.
-
I'm glad they didn't have social media when I was younger, dumber, and mouthier...

Check out the news from THR: 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' Production Put On Hold (Exclusive) (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/guardians-galaxy-3-production-hold-james-gunn-firing-1137400?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=THR%20Breaking%20News_2018-08-24%2015:25:00_jkonerman&utm_term=hollywoodreporter_breakingnews)
It's not really news that the GotG cast rebelled when James Gunn was dismissed by Disney for some old tweets that resurfaced thanks to some online trolls. And with this development? The GotG cast is now free to pursue other work at this time.
-
It's not like it's never going to happen....they're just putting it on hold until a new director is found.
It also says that Taika Waititi had a meeting with Marvel. That's a good sign in my book!
-
I read that Gunn is helming Suicide Squad 2 for WB/DC. Interesting.
-
The first one was a complete train wreck...there's no way I'm seeing the sequel no matter who is writing/directing.
-
Dammit... first they make a Transformers movie I MUST SEE.
Now they're making a Suicide Squad movie I MUST SEE...
What's up with all these quality sequels in garbage franchises??

James Gunn has been re-hired to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/james-gunn-back-as-guardians-galaxy-3-director-1195066).
