They're my favorite band; they gotta new album out tomorrow; they're on tour this summer; they deserve their own thread.
My 57-year-old dad left me a voicemail today, asking how he could go about getting a copy of "Spiders" from the new record. Blew my f--king mind. I guess he read a review of the record somewhere or heard about it on NPR or something, and decided he needs it for himself.
Wow. A few years ago, I would have been mortified if my dad listened to the same stuff I did, but now I think that was the coolest thing in the world.
Don't know if I should just pick up an extra copy of AGIB tomorrow, or if I should make him a cool little Wilco/Tweedy compilation disc.
As for as the new record, it's out in stores tomorrow. Looks like both Best Buy and Circuit City are the places to beat for it, at $11.99.

Rather paltry North American line-up so far. Hope they add some more dates for August/September/October, and at least get Dallas in there somewhere, if not OKC (which they haven't played since '97).

Anyone heard anything about this yet? They're one of my favorite bands, but a friend told me yesterday the album was pretty bad. He'd gotten a copy last week sometime, figure I'll try to borrow it and listen first. I'm worried about the sound without Jay Bennet.

Bought it this morning on the way into work. I'd avoided "spoiling" it by listening to the web stream, and I planned on waiting until I got home tonight so that I could put on some headphones and listen to the album straight through.
I couldn't wait, though, and popped it in on the drive to the office. I only made it through the first four songs, but they all hit the spot.
There must be some kind of weird Jeff Tweedy thing going on in the cosmos, too, because "Shouldn't Be Ashamed" from A.M. was in my head all weekend.
Virex, have you heard Richmond Fontaine? You should check them out. Not as good as Wilco, IMHO, but they have a similar kind of vibe. Worth looking into......

Well, I hope they tour a little more extensively, too, but Lollapalooza being cancelled won't have anything to do with it, considering that they were only scheduled for a few dates, in between regular shows.
I just hope they add a couple of months after August, especially since they had to cancel their first leg this spring due to Tweedy's rehab. . .
Virex, have you heard Richmond Fontaine? You should check them out. Not as good as Wilco, IMHO, but they have a similar kind of vibe. Worth looking into......
No, I haven't. I always thought it was "Richard Fontaine" for some reason--thought it was just some guy. Yeah, I appreciate the tip. Maybe someday I'll check him them out.

So....I've listened to Ghost a couple of times and have one small gripe about an otherwise awesome CD. On Less Than You Think (second to last track) I think the feedback and stuff they do is pretty cool and all but was necessary to do it for 9-10 minutes? And if so, why not do it as the last song?

The ultimate is "Less Than You Think." It's a pretty, conventional song for three minutes then ends with a 12-minute, machine-made drone that would test anyone's patience.
The song is about free will and is partly an inside joke; the band wanted the longest song on the album to be called "Less Than You Think." It also compels audience participation.
"It was another way to encourage listeners to exercise their free will -- to get up and turn it off," Tweedy said.

A lot of people are thinking that the droning feedback is the work of producer Jim O'Rourke.
People are seeming to really have some issues with this, and with "Spiders (Kidsmoke)" off the new record. "Spiders" I like; "LTYT", I've listened to all the way through several times, and don't see a need to listen to it again.

YEah I plan on skipping it too when I have ready access to the player...problem arrises when I'm playing a game or something and am too damn lazy to hit the remote

I don't know how to do it, but I guess there are programs out there which will let you edit your own tracks while burning onto a CD. . .

Hey now--the feedback at the end of "Drown" is a lot more interesting than the stuff at the end of "LTYT", c'mon. . .

Agreed that its not that bad but it also may be my favorite SP song if not for the overdone drawn out feedback that isn't totally necessary IMO. It is what it is but I think they could have left it out. And if Wilco wanted to do it, they should have made it the last song so you don't have to wait for Track 12. My musical 2 cents

I think I am in serious love with this new CD. The other 3 I have listened too (Summer Teeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Being There) are all good and all. But A Ghost is Born is ******* amazing. I listened to it three or four times this weekend in a row, something I haven't done with any new CD for a long, long time.

"Less Than You Think" is "the track that everyone will hate," Tweedy says with a laugh, arriving like an uninvited guest near the end of what is the most straightforward, tradition-bound Wilco record since Being There. "I know ninety-nine percent of our fans won't like that song, that they'll say it's a ridiculous indulgence. Even I don't want to listen to it every time I play through the album. But the times I do calm myself down and pay attention to it, I think it's valuable and moving and cathartic. I wouldn't have put it on the record if I didn't think it was great. We've been doing sound installations like that for the last couple of years in the loft to amuse ourselves, and there's something beautiful about making music that doesn't have any author. Nobody 'plays' anything, and it goes hand in hand with the notion that 'there is so much less to this than you think.' I wanted to make an album about identity, and within that is the idea of a higher power, the idea of randomness, and that anything can happen, and that we can't control it."

The "sound installations" used to make "LTYT" were described earlier:
"What had once been the briefest moment in the Wilco songbook becomes its longest recorded work, a fifteen-minute epic, thanks to an extended coda that consists entirely of various electronic contraptions and synthesizers oscillating through a series of effects boxes -- Wilco's answer to Lou Reed's experiment in drone, "Metal Machine Music." Each band member created his own sound installation in the studio, then let it run unattended. In the mixing afterward, the noise was sculpted into a slow-moving arch that peaks, then fades, the poltergeist of the album title shrieking to life and then drifting out of the room."

Just ordered my tickets for the Friday, September 17 Wilco show at the Granada Theatre in Dallas, Texas. I've been to three other shows at the Granada, and something interesting has happened to me at each one (looking up Kim Gordon's skirt, and subsequently almost passing out from heat exhaustion / waving hello to Liz Phair, and her waving back, and then bumping into her backstage before going out with the Lips as the bear / getting Slash's autograph).
Needless to say, I look forward to this next one.
(Me and Tweedy nearly crashed into each other after an OKC show back in '97. . .)
The guys are also playing the Austin City Limits Music Festival later that weekend, so I think we're gonna catch 'em in Dallas on Friday, and then drive down to Austin and catch 'em again on Sunday, with a bunch of other cool bands (the Pixies, Cat Power, Ben Harper, etc.) in between.
I'm still pissed that they haven't been here in almost seven years, though.

That Austin show sounds sweet, I'd like to catch Harper eventually too.
What I'd really like to see happen is Bridge School 2004 with PJ, Wilco, Harper and Neil Young. I would think long and hard about going to that...

The best part is that, since we'll be in Dallas with Wilco on Friday, we're gonna miss the Friday shows in Austin--but the only really big acts that will be playing are Sheryl Crow and Ryan Adams, who I couldn't give two sh!ts about.
All the good stuff happens on Saturday and Sunday.
(And yeah, the Bridge School Benefits always seemed like cool shows. Aren't they always in October?)

Yeah they are, I've been thinking about going for a while now, ever since I talked to a guy who went when we were taking a Pregnancy Preperation Class who had just got back from the Show. Our wives weren't too happy about us talking about Pearl Jam and Neil Young

Whew--glad I got my order in.
Looking at their schedule, it looks like they're on the East Coast for the first part of October--but there wouldn't be any reason that they couldn't head out west later that month.
And PJ is doing their Vote for Change stuff, but that's in early October, as well.
Maybe a mid-to-late October show could be that big, Vote Bush Out thing that I was hoping for in the other thread. . .

To anyone who may have missed it earlier this summer (or to anyone who may want to see it again)--tonight's Letterman is a re-run of the June show, where Wilco played "Hummingbird".
