Other Toy Lines / Re: How Did You Get Into "Other Lines"?
« on: August 17, 2006, 07:49 PM »
I was collecting Star Trek and some of the Marvel X-Men line from Toy Biz.  I also got started in the 12" GI Joe Hall of Fame line a little before really jumping into the Classic Collection stuff.  I also was big into the Spawn figures back when they first came out but the repaints in that line quickly killed it for me.

In general I was a toy and comics collector from about 1991 - 1995 then dropped most of the other toy lines when POTF2 came out.  I still picked up 12" Joe figures and some odds and ends of other lines but I didn't follow any line like the SW line.

I'm really just a toy fan in general.  I love walking through the toy aisles at WM and Target or going to TRU just to look around at what's out there and I'm usually tempted to buy other stuff even though I don't anymore.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Completist Collecting
« on: August 16, 2006, 07:43 PM »
It's interesting that this topic came up.  I had just drafted and email to the PSWCS group asking similar questions about people that are still completists.

Back in 1995 when the POTF2 line first came out I made the decision that I wanted a complete carded collection and for a long time I even bought two of many figures so that I could open one.  I kept going and when the prequels were announced I kind of had it in my mind that I'd keep that carded line complete through the final film.  I pretty much succeeded.  I skipped the unnumbered Saga HOF figures and I missed out on some of the 2004 POTC figures but that was more because they didn't show up locally.

As of December 2005 I've stopped collecting every figure in the basic line and the ones that I have bought, I've opened.  The exception to that are the AT-AT Driver figures I picked up as he's my focus character.  When I hit the stores I still feel an urge to buy up all the new figures but so far I haven't given in to that.  It's only ever been the Hasbro figures that have done that to me.  I never felt that need to have everything in any other line whether it's Lego, Sideshow, 12" Hasbro, GG or whatever.  I didn't even feel the need to buy every vehicle or playset although I have bought a lot of them.

Besides needing to find a stopping point for my carded collection (space is a big issue with that) I also was becoming more and more turned off with collecting.  There are so many completists on the various forums that feel they're entitled to so much that it sucks your soul out just reading their posts.  I worked hard on my carded collection, kept up with news and hit stores whenever possible and it pissed me off to no end when a thread would start up with someone whining and moaning about missing out on some figure and the scalpers are evil and army builders suck, blah, blah, blah.  And when you asked how often they went toy hunting they'd replay with "oh, well, last week at noon on Tuesday I hit WM for 5 minutes..."

Well, that's not getting it done.  It's the same whether it's Hasbro figures or on-line exclusive Sideshow figures or an SDCC exclusive bust.  Everyone is entitled and if they don't get that one piece it's doom on the licensee, doom on Lucas, doom on scalpers..."I'm out, **** [insert company], don't they know I buy ALL their pieces? How can they do this to ME?  I'll show'em, I'm selling out!"

I never felt that way about the Hasbro figures and never felt any entitlement when it came to collecting.  Even as a completist I couldn't even empathize with them and in the end it helped wean me off my complete carded collection.

I'm a lot happier not spending $50 or $60 every week on new figures.  I've been able to buy some cool things that I might otherwise have skipped in favor of Hasbro figures.  The clutter in my apartment isn't growing now and I'm feeling happier about collecting.

According to Super Size Me, milk is still around, but they're trying now to outlaw Soda in school, which wasn't around when I was a kid.  Sweetest drink we could buy on school grounds was chocolate milk.

They didn't sell soda in my school either.  There was a juice machine in the front hall and all they sold in the cafaterie was 2% milk, skim milk and chocolate milk.  When I was either a junior or senior they added these healthy hippy milkshake things that weren't actually that bad.  But still no soda, unless you brought it from home.

We would pour our Pixie Stix into our milk......... :)

Ah, Pixie Stix.  I remember those but was never a big fan.  In high school we had a desert bar where you could buy ice cream sandwitches or those little plastic containers of ice cream with the paper top and wooden spoon.  Same place you could get those milkshakes I mentioned.  That was the extent of desert unless you counted the whip cream on the jello.   :P

I remember the daily milk break in school.  I wonder if they still do that?  Probably some lactose intolerant kid had a bad reaction, a lawsuit ensued and now milk is outlawed in schools.  Anyway...

I'm old enough that I saw Star Wars in theaters, my first home gaming system was the Atari 2600 and my first computer was a TRS80 from Radio Shack.  I remember top-loading VCR's and when you could still by lawn darts in stores.

In high school we had Apple II computers and by the time I was a senior teachers started requiring that papers be done on the word processor in the computer lab.  But my typing class was still given on old IBM Selectric typewriters.

I sent my first email on the Internet (technically it was DECnet I think) in 1989 from my college library to some students at another NY college.  By 1991 I had an email pen pal in Haifa Israel.  By 1992 I owned an "IBM compatible" Packard Bell computer, was on USENET buying and selling comic books and downloading pr0rn.  In 1993 we were playing the hell out of "Wolfenstein 3D" (the great grandfather of all your first-person shooters) and I bought my first carded "vintage" ROTJ figure on-line from a guy in Florida.  In that same year I was on IRC hitting on chicks in Chicago (and people think forums, AIM and MySpace are the Devil...where have they been for the last 13 years?).

I built my first web site in late 1994 or early 1995.

I found my first grey hair two years ago.

And technically, none of this has anything to do with Rebelscum...but it is fun to think about sometimes.

If it's on the small of the back, just above the "thong line" it's called a Tramp Stamp.

What's it called it when it's there.....Crotch Blotch?

What the hell is it supposed to be anyway?  It looks like a ******* bat is flying out of her cooter.  Nothing says come hither like a winged mouse hovering over your hoohah.

Does it turn into a pterodactyl if she eats on too many donuts?

I'm not impressed by tats like that.  I'm also not inmpressed or attracted to tatoos on boobs.  Boobs are their own decoration, why would you put a tat on them?

Hmm.  Very interesting question.

I think I'm torn.  If I was to stop collecting everything but one line it's a toss-up between Hasbro 3.75" figures and, probably, GG items.

The action figures have always been the biggest draw for me so it would probably be them.  The arguement for GG is that there are a reasonable number of releases each year, they'd look great on display and you have the option of busts or some of the statues or Maquettes.

Other Toy Lines / Re: Pirates of the Caribbean Collectibles
« on: August 5, 2006, 02:32 PM »
I had to copy and paste them into my browser and then they came up.

That repainted playset is really looking good.  I agree, there's some additional work that can be done to it, but for a toy it looks pretty good.

With the talent that guy seems to have for paint detail I'm sure he can take it up a few notches though.  Really make it a standout piece.

The fact that, except for the wood, he's only repainted it is a testament to how well it's sculpted by Zizzle.  That's one thing that has always intrigued me about some toys, they may not look great as-is, but a talented painter can bring out details in sculpts that are incredible.  Things that go unnoticed by kids and some collectors just because Hasbro, Mattel or some other company has to balance cost vs paint apps.

A prime example of that is the Obi-Wan Kenobi head sculpt on the Hasbro 12" figure back in '96 or 97.  It doesn't look terrible but I've seen some customizers repaint the face tones, eyes and highlight the hair and age wrinkles and the face rivals what Sideshow is doing now.  Unfortunately, after a few early head sculpts, and with only one or two exceptions (Dooku, Boushh Leia, there's also a Han), Hasbro pretty much booted every head they did from about 98/99 till the end of their run.

Since I wrote this I've seen a couple episodes and the cartoon isn't that bad.  I've also looked at some of the figures a little more since I posted and I'll probably pick up a couple.
